Note
Can I request fluff with Kane-san from Tourabu? Thank you!
Not including my starter toudan (Yamanbagiri), Izuminokami was my first sword love ahah. He's so pretty ;;
Izuminokami had really gorgeous hair. The way it flowed in battle, the sun or moon's light catching in it was always a breathtaking sight. It looked well-maintained and something that you wanted to run your fingers through. It was a pleasant surprise when the uchigatana agreed to letting you play with his hair.
His strands were soft to the touch as you carded your fingers through them in delicate motions. Izuminokami sat in front of you, his shoulders perfectly at ease as you both basked in the warm summer sun that peeked in. His eyes fluttered shut, a sense of comfort washing over him the longer you continued to play around with his hair.
Carefully, he tilted his head back, prompting you to pause with your ministrations. His eyes shone as he looked at you, his lips quirking into a smile at you, loving while still containing that hint of smug pride.
He twisted himself around, cradling your face in between his hands and gently pulled you in for a sweet and adoring kiss. Your fingers found their way back to his smooth locks. The softness of his lips pressing against yours when coupled with the silky sensation in between your fingers was more than enough to make you feel at peace.

Holding hands.
I like to think that when he was a child, Kane-san’s most favorite thing to do, next to being held by Kunihiro, was holding hands with Kunihiro. Whenever they went out, either on an errand or an afternoon stroll, he always reached out for Kunihiro’s hand, not just because he knew it was to keep him from getting lost in the crowd (baby Kane-san was such a good boy, says a nostalgic Kunihiro) but because he wanted to.
Then follows this scenario I also love where as he grew older, Kiyomitsu and Yasusada began to tease him for it and of course, that made him all kinds of upset because on one hand, he’s gotta be Hijikata’s “strong, super cool” sword and on the other, he doesn’t want to stop holding hands with Kunihiro (and give those meanies the satisfaction of getting to him).
So while he was in the middle of his dilemma, Kunihiro gradually, secretly (and with a small bit of heartache) tried to get Kane-san accustomed to holding hands less while at the same time, praising him for being so “grown-up” whenever he did anything by himself. For a while, that worked until one day, they did get separated in the crowd and a distressed Kane-san ended up running around in circles trying to find Kunihiro despite knowing he should’ve stayed put like Kunihiro told him but again, he panicked and forgot, oyo~
And when Kane-san did find him, he all but flung himself at his partner, then made Kunihiro promise to never let go of his hand so that Kunihiro won’t get lost next time and Kunihiro didn’t have it in him to say otherwise so he agreed and so they continued holding hands for a long time (and Kane-san didn’t care what Okitagumi had to say because one day, he caught them holding hands and linking fingers anyway so HA!)
And there’s a part 2 to this, yes there’s a part 2 to this but that’s for another day.
Part 2 ->

Analyzing Touken Ranbu
Since I clearly have too much spare time, I decided to have a look at the statistics of Touken Ranbu. Gotta do something when there’s no event going on and you’re endlessly going around map 5-4.
I started my analysis of map 5-4 by looking at the contents of my inbox. (To my knowledge, all swords were obtained on map 5-4.) I had 162 swords, of which 53 were KBC sword drops.
Conclusion: roughly 1 out of 3 swords you obtain at map 5-4 is a KBC drop.
Regular Node drops:  Yamabushi (26), Dodanuki (20), Okurikara (20), Izuminokami (18), Shokudaikiri (12), Shishio (5), Ishikirimaru (4), Otegine (2), Ichigo (1), Kosetsu (1)
Sword Drop rates: Yamabushi (23.8%), Dodanuki/Okurikara (18.3%), Izuminokami (16.5%), Shokudaikiri (11.0%), Shishio (4.5%), Ishikirimaru (3.6%), Otegine (1.8%), Ichigo/Kosetsu (0.9%)
The Top 3 KBC Node drops: Yagen (13), Gokotai (11), Midare/Maeda (5) Also, Hizamaru (1). (Drop rate is 1.8%.)
However, since I had partially emptied my inbox halfway through (and then resumed playing), I realized these result may not be completely accurate. Next I also started wondering if maybe one sword drops more often on a certain node than others. As such I began my investigation.
At this moment I have only documented 50 (consecutive) runs around map 5-4 and I’m still in the middle of my research, but I decided to share some preliminary conclusions with you. (And let’s see if they chance later on...)
GENERAL INFORMATION
I’ve been running map 5-4 with Unit two.
Horikawa (lv48),  Goto (lv49), Imanotsurugi (lv67), Hakata (lv64), Izuminokami (lv43), Gokotai (lv46).
Captain position was constantly switched, because fatigue distribution. All swords have completed their Kiwame training. All nodes were completed with Rank A or Rank S.
DROP RATES
After 50 runs, I gathered 108 swords, of which 23 are KBC drops. So, it appears roughly 1 out of 5 sword drops was a KBC node. And, you’ll received 2 sword drops per run on average.
Regular Node drops: Yamabushi (19), Okurikara (15), Izuminokami/Shokudaikiri (13), Shishio (8), Dodanuki (7), Hotarumaru (3), Ishikirimaru/Kosetsu (2), Tsurumaru/Otegine/Ichigo (1)
Sword drop rates: Yamabushi (22.4%), Okurikara (17.6%), Izuminokami/Shokudaikiri (15.3%), Shishio (9.4%), Dodanuki (8.2%), Hotarumaru (3.5%), Ishikirimaru/Kosetsu (2.4%), Tsurumaru/Otegine/Ichigo (1.2%)
Top 3 KBC Node drops: Imanotsurugi (4), Midare/Gokotai (3), Yagen/Souza/Kasen/Hachisuka (2) Also, Hizamaru (1) and Higekiri (1). (Drop rate is 4.3%.)
Likelihood to get a sword drop (per node): Node A (26.1%), Node B (13.0%), Node C (22.7%), Node D (39.3%), Node E (42.4%), Node F (15.4%), Node H (31.6%), Node I (40.0%), Node J (100%), Node K (50.0%), Node M (39.1%), Node N (15.4%)
Special drops per node: Node A: Higekiri (1), Node B: None, Node C: Ishikirimaru (2), Node D: None, Node E: None, Node F: None, Node H: None, Node I: Otegine (1), Node J: Tsurumaru (1), Node K: Kosetsu (2), Hotarumaru (1), Node M: Hotarumaru (2), Hizamaru/ Ichigo (1), Node N: None
Overall chance to obtain a special drop at 5-4: 11.8% Likelihood to get a special sword drops (per node) : Node C (9.1%), Node I (10%), Node J (9.1%), Node K (25%), Node M (13%)
ROUTES
After 50 runs, I ended at:  Node H: 22 times, Node J: 11 times and Node N: 14 times. *And my game crashed thrice halfway through the map, because I had Touken Ranbu Helper running and my laptop doesn’t like that.
The chance you end at: Node H (46.8%), Node J (23.4%), Node N (29.8%)
Times I visited: Node A (50/50), Node B (27/49), Node C (22/49), Node D (33/47), Node E (33/47), Node F (14/47), Node H (22/47), Node I (11/47), Node J (11/47), Node K (14/47), Node M (25/47), Node N (14/47)
The chance you go to:  Node A (100%), Node B (55.1%), Node C (44.9%), Node D (70.2%), Node E (70.2%), Node F (29.8%), Node H (46.8%), Node I (23.4%), Node J (23.4%), Node K (29.8%), Node M  (53.2%), Node N (29.8%)
KBC
Times I ran into the KBC: Node A (4/50), Node B (4/27), Node C (0/22), Node D (5/33), Node E (0/33), Node F (1/14), Node H (3/22), Node I (1/11), Node J (0/11), Node K (2/14), Node M (2/25), Node N (1/14)
The chance you’ll run into the KBC (per node): Node A (8.0%), Node B (14.8%), Node C (0%), Node D (15.2%), Node E (0%), Node F (7.1%), Node H (13.6%), Node I (9.1%), Node J (0%), Node K (14.3%), Node M (8.0%), Node N (7.1%)
The KBC is most likely to appear on: Node B, Node D, Node H, Node K
Average chance you’ll run into the KBC: 8.7% (23/265) Drop rate for any KBC node: 100%. Chance to obtain Hizamaru/Higekiri: 4.3%
Bonus fact: It appears Horikawa loves to lead the team to Node H.
I only started tracking the influence of the Captain about 10 runs ago, but 6 out of 6 runs Horikawa led the team to Node H. In comparison, Hakata didn’t lead the team there even once during the 5 runs he was Captain.
It’s probably too soon to draw any real conclusions, but... xD
Good, that’s it for the current analysis!

On a lighter note, it tickles me pink that their in-canon data actually does say that they are “partners” and Tsurumaru just rolls with it.
Like, “I just met you but I already know you’re a pair so why aren’t you two together like the paperwork said you’d be?” xDDD
ufotable sneakily slipping Tsuru-chan in there as a shipper on deck, ufufu~

A thought just hit me as I was typing out my speculations on Hijikatagumi meeting with up with their former master.
I think Kane-san might have another reason to be concerned about Kunihiro taking an interest in reunions. I’m not sure if he realizes it but perhaps on some level he may have and maybe that’s why he tries to discourage Kunihiro from meeting Hijikata under the guise of “we have a job to do.”
Kane-san said that in order to figure out what it truly meant to protect history, he needs all the swords of the Second Unit to help him. Naturally, that includes Kunihiro.
In fact, Kunihiro is pretty much the most essential person he needs because it’s thanks to Kunihiro that he was able to maintain his composure as captain. It’s because Kunihiro is there that he found motivation to come back and fight, to actively search for the answer to his question. Kunihiro is the one capable of holding Kane-san together.
If Kunihiro were to be separated from the group, from Kane-san, for whatever reason, then I can only imagine how much that’ll hurt Kane-san.
I’m not saying Kane-san can’t handle himself without Kunihiro because Kane-san is certainly stronger than that. I’m saying things will be harder on him if he loses Kunihiro again.
Tumblr media
Because if Katsugeki is really following that story, Kane-san already lost Kunihiro once. He lost him to the sea. For hundreds of years.
Kane-san can come to terms with Hijikata’s death because Hijikata’s human. Hijikata was his past. The past is something that happened. You can’t change it. You can only accept it.
But Kunihiro is with him now. Kunihiro is in the present with him.
After such a long time of being apart, they’re miraculously together again. That is something he can protect. And he’ll be damned if he lets anything, even the past, take Kunihiro away a second time.
So I don’t think it’s just for the sake of protecting history that Kane-san is starting to show a little worry. I believe he’s also anxious that something can happen to Kunihiro and that he won’t be able to protect his partner.
Tumblr media
And I know this is terrifying to think about but there are numerous ways that can play out. Look, we even have foreboding lighting in this shot.
Like, Kunihiro might be tempted to save Hijikata from his fate and the Revisionists will take advantage of that by converting him over to their side. In other words, Kunihiro betrays the Second Unit and becomes their enemy.
Or the Time Retrograde Army splits the Second Unit up with the specific goal of driving Kunihiro (and Hijikata) into a corner, either turning him into their unwitting pawn as he tries to maneuver things back on course but is, in fact, actually changing history.
These routes seem very unlikely to me, though, because Kunihiro’s too smart be manipulated like that. He might waver a bit out of loyalty to his former master but he definitely knows he would never willingly ally with the enemy or hurt his comrades.
Still, if Kunihiro’s isolated from the rest, there’s only so much he can do by himself. The mooks still outnumber the Touken Danshi by a lot and who knows what other nasty tricks they have up their sleeve.
There’s even the possibility of a hostage/sacrifice situation and that lends itself to even more various scenarios. Kunihiro breaks as he guards and guides Hijikata to a safe point. Kunihiro is somehow captured or trapped but opts to take down a boss with him. Or if he can only hold them off, asks the other swords to deliver the final blow on the both of them.
Admittedly, those are very cliche so we might luck out and be able to avoid the worse.
Tumblr media
But there is a certainty. Kunihiro getting extremely damaged or breaking or even dying I don’t know how that would work but I’m not ruling it out…I just don’t know how Kane-san will be able to bear that guilt and grief.
Oh, he’ll find a way but it will still hurt infinitely more than almost losing Tonbokiri (because it’s Kunihiro!), especially if Kane-san cannot reach Kunihiro in time or if he’s the one who has to point his sword at Kunihiro.
………well, food for thought, I guess. Or ideas for angst fics. Choose your poison. *shrug*
Why, yes, I’m a very cruel witch and I want you all to suffer with me.
