Kane-san flopped onto his back into the long grass, his hands clasped behind his head to cradle it. He let out a loud sigh as he stared up at the wispy, white clouds moving slowly across the endless pale blue sky. It had been a long day of scouting the enemy. Despite having fairly reliable information from Konnosuke, there was no sign of their target anywhere.

Kane-san turned his head slightly to the left to see Horikawa sitting with his knees drawn up to his chest with his arms wrapped around his shins. The breeze ruffled his chestnut hair, and Kane-san couldn’t help but notice the red stud he had given Horikawa in his ear. He smiled.

“Any sign of them?”

Horikawa shook his head, keeping his gaze forward. “No.”

A dramatic sigh escaped Kane-san’s lips. “So boring.” He thought he saw the tiniest flinch from Horikawa, and he wondered if he had inadvertently hurt Horikawa. He removed his hands from behind his head as he sat up.

“Ne…Kunihiro…” Horikawa turned his head to meet Kane-san’s gaze. He opened his mouth to say something, but words failed him. Suddenly, the thought of sharing his feelings made his stomach clench, and he slammed his mouth shut. 

“Kane-san?”

Heat began to flame his cheeks. “Um…”

Kunihiro uncurled himself, turning his body to face Kane-san completely. A brow quirked up toward his hairline, and his head tilted slightly to the side. Damn, that’s cute, Kane-san thought. 

“What?”

Kane-san inhaled deeply and without giving himself another chance to second guess himself, he barreled into his statement. “This is nice.”

“What is?”

“This. You and me.”

Kunihiro’s took a moment to process what was said. When he fully understood, his eyes widened, and a blush formed on his cheeks. He looked down at his knees, and suddenly Kane-san felt like he might’ve overstepped his bounds. He was about to tell Horikawa to forget about it when a guttural shout sounded from below them. 

Their attention turned to the source of the noise. A shadowy figure was prowling the grassy knoll not far from their little hill. Kane-san smirked, his attention returning to his partner. Horikawa’s blue eyes were bright, ready for battle.

“You and me. Against the world.”

Halloween is a BIG DEAL at the my Citadel. And after celebrating it the first time since his arrival, Kane-san quietly looks forward to it every year cuz dressing up, getting candy, playing pranks and scaring people? even though Kane-san is the one who gets spooked It’s just too fun (in his words, “I’m a popular sword, if I don’t partake in what’s popular, that’s just not right”).

Hori enjoys it a lot too but as more swordboys join the Citadel, he’s become more busy with helping out behind-the-scenes like decorating, making the treats, making Kane-san’s (“Kunihiro, Kunihiro, this year I want to be...!” “Got it, leave it to me, Kane-san!”), his brothers’ and sometimes the other Shinsengumi’s costumes that by the time Halloween rolls around, there isn’t a lot of time left for him to make his own.

That upset Kane-san one year when Hori showed up in a simple white sheet as a (very cute) ghost cuz Kunihiro works so hard, he deserves to dress up in something a lot cooler (and "Wth,” thinks Kane-san the “super cool dashing” vampire, “We’re partners so we should wear matching costumes!”).

Luckily the Kunihiro bros and other Shinsengumi share his sentiment so whenever Hori’s short on time to make his own costume, they secretly make one for him themselves and in the end it turns out stunning (thanks to Kiyomitsu’s good sense and trading chores with those who can sew, kakaka).

Hori cries every time they do this and keeps all the costumes they made for him and stores them carefully away like it’s valuable treasure and is this a headcanon anymore or a fanfic?
