katsuki bakugo: cooking and baking with him! it all started on a cozy afternoon in April, you’re mindlessly scrolling through tiktok whilst cuddling with katsuki (your sparky bf practically asleep in your arms) when you stumbled upon some cute and interesting cooking videos appearing on your fyp. katsuki peers through your phone and groggily asks if you want to try out and attempt to make some of them and you immediately say yes!

the two of you start with something simple and basic, dalgona coffee! (even playfully arguing whether or not you should adding more whipped cream to your drinks or not), after that, you then take your culinary journey a bit further by making some baked sushi, cloud bread, and mini donut cereals among many other scrumptious delights! after a while, you decided to buy some matching “kiss the cook” aprons online and even started a tiktok account detailing all of the special twists katsuki made to the recipes (although he absolutely refused to make an account at first, with some probing and dozens of pouty faces and puppy eyes coming from his adorable significant other, he finally gives in) dancing and kisses in the kitchen, spreading flour on each other’s faces, leaving sneaky love notes by the fridge, and making each other coffee in the morning were just some of the little add-ons the two of you would do with each other.

izuku midoriya: online escape rooms and virtual museum tours! the national museum of japan were offering some free virtual tours around the museum and the two of you could not just pass up the opportunity to see all the intricate pieces being displayed in the museum. however, izuku wanted to experience something else that's similar to that and so, after seeing an ad on twitter for an virtual escape room experience, izuku excitedly told you about it. jumping and hopping around like a little bunny and you couldn’t help but agree as seeing him so happy and so excited for something will never fail to make your heart flutter. the two of you immediately book a reservation and even bring out your virtual reality gears for the full immersive experience. you’re clinging to his arm the whole time as you virtually traverse a horror escape game and your freckled boyfriend tries his best to be brave just for you.

with both of your intelligent and inquisitive minds combined together, with the occasional soft couple bickering, and having to listen to izuku murmur to himself for several minutes,  the two of you solved 7 escape rooms (for a week straight) in a span of three hours each. the two of you take turns in doing the tasks of the game, and whoever fails to do so, has to do the other person’s bidding for the entire day. although the two of you could never force the other to do any mean-spirited dares to each other, most of the bidding you told each other to do were peppering each other kisses on the cheek, long and warm hugs, choosing the movie for the night, cuddling in the bed and holding hands among many other things.

todoroki shoto: binging movies and tv shows on netflix with him! this was the perfect opportunity to help your icy-hot boyfriend finally indulge in everything pop culture. and what better way to do so than on netflix and other streaming sites? the two of you end up watching every romantic movie dear to your heart. mixed with bed or couch cuddles, blankets wrapped around the two of you, a lot of cheesy and loving whispers said, and paired with some comfort food you ordered online. your watching area varied. sometimes the two of you would watch in the bedroom, living room, and sometimes you would even make a pillow fort with dangling fairy lights attached to it filling the tent with fluffy stuff toys to lie on just so that the two of you can watch on the floor.

shoto cried when the two of you finished watching the notebook and the eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. and all you did the entire night was give him all the hugs and kithes you could provide him. ever since then, the two of you opt for more light-hearted movies. rom-coms, disney movies and sitcoms where he endlessly referenced iconic lines from friends, the office, how i met your mother, and brooklyn 99. the days in quarantine go by with the two of you just mindlessly singing and dancing along to disney songs, rewatching rom-coms for the umpteenth time, reenacting some scenes from iconic movies with dry yet hilarious acting, and just discussing movie theories whenever he cutely and innocently asks you about some small details he missed every time you finish watching a movie for the day

eijiro kirishima: training and exercise routines with him! your shark-toothed boyfriend is a fitness buff through and through. to the point that a room in your house dedicated to just gym and fitness equipment exists. but when quarantine struck the world and your lovely home, you slightly lost your motivation to work out. eijiro continues to encourage you to do so ofc! with the two of you occasionally going outside to jog but aside from that, nothing much else. when he catches you watching a chloe ting video on youtube, he scoops you up from the couch, and you giggle trying to tell him to put you down yet he refuses to do so, as he carries you all the way to your little gym room. you notice that there are yoga mats sprawled about and since then, the two of you would do a lot of yoga as it has been proven to decrease anxiety. sometimes the two of you would get distracted and start dancing to the exercise music, accompanied endless laughter and giggles when kirisihima would do his daily planking exercise with you sitting on top of him as he does so.

there were also times when the two of you were so tired and sore. so you would give each other loving massages, there were also times when the two of you would just sleep it out or just lounge in the bed. excercise couldn’t stop your cravings and so, and there were also times when the two of you would do some food mukbangs you’ve been craving for recently.

shinsou hitoshi: playing video games with him and taking care of your little pet kitten! right before quarantine started, shinsou surprised you with a pet little kitten that the two of you decided to name gigi, named after the cat from kiki’s delivery service. the two of you always running around the house as if you were parents to a newly-born baby, watching your cute little kitten frolicking around, touching and interacting with everything he could find. after watching some “cat parents” videos on youtube and learning some tips, you attempt to give it a bath, resulting into a very wet failure. with the only time you can feel peace and quiet was when gigi was asleep or whenever he would be drinking his vet-approved milk. your quarantine life was hectic and chaotic but taking care of a cute little bundle of joy with your equally loving and handsome boyfriend... well, life couldn’t get any better than this.

when you were finally able to get the hang of the cat parents life, you and shinsou finally found the time to rest and relax by playing video games. may it be a horror, action, adventure, rhythm, or fantasy game, you were always playing with him. maybe as a player 2 or just as the supportive significant other who helped him solve puzzles, make story game choices that could change the game, and even help him with the buttons if he was trying to fight some hard boss. whenever there are jumps cares in the game, he would hold your hand and give you reassuring pats. whenever the two of you would play against each other on the other hand, he has his arms wrapped around you, with you still being extremely focused at the game at hand, he would give you pecks on the cheek to try and make you distracted so that he can win. your little pet kitten, gigi, sleeping on the couch as the two of you play to your heart’s content.

Headcanons on the type of pets La Squadra would own?

Holy shit this was too fun to make, especially with giving the pets names.

Sorbet and Gelato have their own Crusty-White-Dog™ that's a Maltese Terrier named Armani. The dog hates and barks nonstop at everything deemed threatening (aka, everyone and particularly the rest of La Squadra) and yet those two will claim she's the sweetest thing in the world. True to her name, they deck her with Armani branded clothes, either specially made dog fashion or they had a DIY done to make it look like an Armani outfit- down to the bright pink leash she wears dripping in the Armani logo. She eats the finest dry kibble and only drinks Ferrarelle Sparkling water; she will know the difference if you switch it up. She's the epitome of "I demand pets but only do so with your eyes" to everyone. Despite loving Sorbet and Gelato the most, she demands all their attention on her and she will cockblock those two if she catches them being affectionate to each other instead. Despite having a nice bed, she always sleeps between the two of them and will whimper if they kick her out of the bedroom so they can get intimate. Those tear-stained eyes always look like they've seen everything, despite being constantly babied by her owners. If Armani could, she would kill everyone.

Risotto, the biggest man in Vento Aureo, has a little Syrian hamster he called Ace. He thought that a pet with a shorter lifespan would allow him the perfect balance of having a pet but not being very attached to it compared to pets that live longer- he was wrong. If you ever come into Risotto's office as he worked, either you are greeted with Ace running around in his green hamster ball, walking around Risotto's desk as he worked, or running in the hamster wheel behind the desk. Ace's tank is an old Aquarium tank Pesci gave to Risotto that is now full of soft bedding, toys, and Risotto frequently cleans it. There are days where Risotto just spends hours watching his hamster walk around the room, eating little treats, and staring at Risotto with its beady eyes. It's gotten to the point where you can't walk into Risotto's office without noticing a lone sunflower seed or piece of bedding on the ground that Risotto didn't notice until you pointed it out. Every time Ace passes from old age, Risotto buys a new Syrian hamster and calls that one Ace. He hasn't kept track of how many hamsters that came and went so far, but treated every one of them as if they were the first Ace. He takes pictures of Ace doing the most relatively boring things and will share them with his members.

Illuso got a Sulphur-crested cockatoo named Scapino as a joke. He thought they didn’t require much attention but later felt bad when he found out that they need specific proper care. He proceeds to care for it as if it was his child. Illuso taught his bird how to speak and swear at people, specifically swearing at Formaggio and occasionally at Ghiaccio. This man will shower his bird with the best treats (expensive nuts, dried fruit, chicken bones) and has a special bar for it to perch on when they're in the shower together. This bird has free reign all over Illuso's place and wears a little anklet thing to verify that it has an owner should it escape. The two of them have spa days together and it’s one of the most wholesome things in the world to witness. Scapino will actually join Illuso on missions too, staying in the mirror world the whole time, and it provides him some comfort from his social anxiety. Sometimes Scapino sits on his shoulder as he walks. Illuso trained it to stay and hide in the mirror world so that it wouldn’t fly away or blow his cover when he’s working. But the bird will fly around in there and will watch anyone that’s getting murked in front of him with no remorse and commenting on it too. Imagine you’re dying in the mirror world and your last moment is this fucking bird looming over you going “night night, motherfucker”. JESUS CHRIST. 

Prosciutto used to be on the whole “pets are unnecessary” train but he had considered looking at breeders for the best quality dog. And then one rainy day he found an abandoned Portuguese Water Dog puppy in an alleyway and at Pesci’s insistence took it in. Turns out the puppy was bought by a rich family for their kid but then abandoned when the kid wasn't interested in it anymore. Prosciutto insisted that the dog was going to stay for one night and then sent to the pound first thing in the morning. It's been years now and the little dog is now a big fluffy good boy named Pon Pon. The second biggest chunk of Prosciutto's paycheck is for this dog; I'm talking grooming services with paw-ticures, an all-organic raw diet, the nicest beds that even a human would wish they can sleep on. Pon Pon is properly trained with all the basics and tricks, because Prosciutto doesn't want to deal with a misbehaving dog, but it will use puppy eyes against the old man now and then. He give you the best smiles if you call him a good boy and if you glance at the right time you can see Prosciutto smile for a brief moment. Had he lived longer, he would have made Pon Pon famous on Facebook like Boo the Dog. Prosciutto will also not admit that this dog has helped him get laid a few times, because every person he did bring home always got a kick out of Pon Pon.

Ghiaccio has a pet snake- an albino ball python named Bianco. Ghiaccio was also on the “pets are unnecessary” train too but mainly because he can't stand loud pets (i.e. Illuso and Sorbet and Gelato’s pets). When Risotto suggested he get a snake, Ghiaccio looked into it, researching and meticulously setting up the proper enclosure  and found himself going to a local reptile expo to find Bianco for sale. He’s fascinated by his snake to say the least, and would use leftover containers or Tupperware for Bianco to spend more money on proper equipment or food. Ghiaccio is really involved in online reptile forums and frequently debates with people on topics such as the best substrates to use, whether live rodents are better than frozen, ethics of breeding certain species, etc. He often gets worried when Bianco becomes picky and Ghiaccio would spend sleepless nights trying to get his baby to eat. Ghiaccio would walk around with his ball python wrapped around his neck or lets him slither around in his room under supervision but he mostly leaves him alone in the enclosure. There are times where he would claim he has the best, smartest pet and everyone just rolls their eyes like “yes the white fettuccine that got stuck in a toilet paper roll an hour ago is so smart”. But they let him rant about it. It’s kind of cute to say the least.

Pesci is the definition of people whose entire LIVELIHOOD is making his room into an aquarium. His room is full of strictly maintained, cleaned, and decorated tanks full of various types of aquatic animals. I’m talking Dwarf Puffers (Antonio, Portia, Jessica, Bassiano, and Solanio), Albino Gold Axolotls (Moe, Larry, and Curly), Red Ear Sliders (Franco and Ciccio), Clown Fishes (Browser, Mario, Toadstool, and Koopa), Brazilian Sea Horses (Tom and Jerry), a Blue Betta Fish named Valentina in a 30+ gallon aquaponics tank that grows a variety of plants each season- to name a few. He rebuilt his entire room to keep everything running and even had Melone help him set up timers for lighting and temperature control. Pesci will cry if you somehow made the pH level off by 1 or did not care for his animals properly when he’s away. He’ll even lecture you about bad tank setup. He's a prominent member of the aquarium  community in Italy and will regularly redecorate each tank to suit the year and mood. This is where he’s spending his cut on the 20 million lira job: caring for his mini aquarium room. He occasionally gives away his pets’ offsprings for extra money (he doesn’t breed but sometimes he ends up having a ton of baby animals he can’t take care of) and would have been a YouTuber for his fish content. Now that I think about it, Pesci reminds me of my mutual @nexter2nd. Please go follow them.

Melone has a Holland Lop bunny and you cannot change my mind. He actually had a pet bunny growing up, another Holland Lop named Echo and Grep, and his current one is named Sudo; all three are named after UNIX commands. He has a large dog crate he diy-ed to be a roomy enclosure in his room for her that he cleans frequently but also allows Sudo free reign of the room when she wants to go out. Because of his job, he makes sure all his wires are covered so his bunny isn't tempted to chew them and watches his bunny diligently whenever she roams around. Easter time is when the denim jacket, pastel bows, and flower crowns come out and Melone makes sure to take a lot of photos. He also housetrained his bunny and taught her a few tricks, similar to how he trained Echo and Grep years ago. Sudo is spoiled in terms of getting a lot of pets, new toys, and feasts on the finest veggies and delicious hay. Melone also makes sure the first thing he teaches his Juniors is to not harm the bunny. Surprisingly, he's against breeding Sudo and has her neutered. This is mainly because he doesn't have the time to breed and raise more bunnies but also he hates the idea of selling the grown bunnies off afterward. 

You know that Formaggio has a cat: the little Russian Blue cat named Sweetie Baby. Sweetie Baby was a kitten that he found outside his home. The little thing was the sole survivor of its litter and nearly starving to death, so he took her in thinking he will bring her to the shelter when she recovers; that cat now lets him live in HER apartment rent-free. Despite feeding her cheap dry food and constantly shoving her into bottles, he treats her like a queen otherwise. He will dress her up in little outfits (much to her annoyance) and often would be too aggressively affectionate towards her. Still, there are moments where she would cuddle with him during the later nights and allow him to put on one iced-out bow he just spent a quarter of his paycheck on. Walking to his apartment and even the backdoor of La Squadra’s HQ means carefully walking through the stray cats mewling at your feet, because Formaggio will feed any cat he sees. Initially, Risotto wanted the cats gone, but then he finds out the cats doubled as security when he watched some robber attempting to break in but getting their eyes scratched off instead.

A New Sun: Part 7

I woke up Saturday morning to the sound of rain pattering on my roof. Asher was still snuggled up next to me and I kissed the pup on the forehead. He let out a yawn that ended with a sleepy whine. I shuffled around him and got out of bed. I had started stretching in the morning, and slowly my body didn’t ache as much. I poured dog food into Asher’s bowl and suddenly he was out of bed and skittering across the floor to get to the food. I watched him scarf down the chow with wide eyes.

“You’re going to choke little boy dog,” I scratched his back. He didn’t bother looking up. I changed into work clothes and found a rain coat that I slipped over my head. Ash followed me outside, staying on the covered part of the porch.

                My parsnips were ready to be harvested, I pulled each of them out of the ground and wiped the mud off them. I was now thankful for buying the extra seeds yesterday, which I planted after placing my parsnips in my shipping bin. After planting, I weeded the garden. I was thankful for the rain, it kept me cool and the work by went faster. Once I was done, I went inside and took a quick shower. I slipped on my raincoat back on and Ash and I went outside again, fishing pole.

When I lived in the city, a rainy day meant a day full of napping and gaming. But now, even after a week in Pelican town and at the farm, it seemed like a waste to do nothing all day. I made my way through the farm and towards Marnie’s ranch. The rain had slowed to a sprinkle as I reached the river. I cast my line, Ash stood between my feet and stared down into the water. He sighed. I looked down, Ash shivered as he stared out across the water. I would need to buy him a raincoat online.

Usually I had the patience of a saint. I could spend all day fishing, staring out across the water and catch nothing. Not today though. After a couple of minutes, I was mocking Asher’s sigh and reeled my line back in. “Come on boy,” I said to Ash. The rain had stopped, and we started walking. Last night I had walked this same path with Sebastian, where he had asked me why I had come back here. What was I running from? I had been honest when I said nothing, there was nothing that I was running from.

Liar.

I rubbed my eyes. Maybe it would have been a good idea to go back home, cuddle up under the covers and get some extra sleep. Ash yipped, bringing me out of my haze. “What is it?” I asked. He started running.

“Asher!” I yelled and chased after him. He was much faster than me and he easily cleared his way under bushes and over branches. “Ash!” I yelled, tearing through bushes, tripping over the same branches. He gained distance on me and I felt the panic rise. I cleared more bushes just as I caught Ash turn into an abandoned shack. I slowed, hesitating before continuing. The panic continued to rise, afraid to find my dog in some horrible trap that an old hunter had placed. Never had I heard of any hunters in the Valley, nor had I ever seen hide or hair of a deer. But it could happen.

I ducked into the entry, the door long gone. Inside, Asher was bundled up with 4 other shivering puppies.

“Oh,” I said kneeling down, the coward into the corner. Ash broke away, coming to sit on my lap. I picked him up and cuddled him close, ignoring the smell of wet dog. I scooted against the wall, the other puppies eyeing me warily. I pulled out my phone and scrolled through my contacts before hitting call.

Answer on the third ring. “Hello?” His voice was husky with sleep.

“I’m sorry, did I wake you up?” I asked.

“What time is it?”

“Just after eleven o’clock.”

Sebastian groaned.

“Bash,” I said his name softly.

“Kit,” he sighed. Goosebumps rose on my arms.

“I’m sorry to wake you up. I’ll make you coffee and breakfast, but I have a situation,” I scooted closer to the shivering puppies. One let out a small growl.

“What’s up?” He was clearly awake now.

“Remember where we were walking last night?”

“Yeah,” I could hear him shuffling around.

“There is like this abandoned shack not far from there, to the south.” Ash was now joining his siblings in the huddle again.

“I know where you are talking about. Didn’t know it was south though. Hold on,” there was a pat, of the phone being sat down. “Okay, sorry, had to put on my hoodie.”

“Is it the same one from when we were teenagers?” I asked.

“Of course,” he scoffed. I grinned. “Now, what about the shack?”

“I found more puppies, I need help with them,” I said biting my lower lip.

“More? Yoba, what are you a Disney princess?”

“How many Disney princesses have you seen working on a farm?” I challenged.

“Cinderella had some pretty shitty chores.”

“You’ve seen Cinderella?” I grinned.

There was a pause. “Do you want my help?”

“Right, sorry,” I heard a door close.

“I’ll be there shortly,” Sebastian said. “See you soon mom!”

“Sebby, where are you going?” With that there was a click and silence. I stared down at the puppies, this time moving beside them. They were huddled in the corner, shivering, skinny and stinking. The floor was covered in filth and smelled of urine and waste. I tried not to breath to deeply.

I placed my hand on the back of one, who yipped but didn’t try to get away. Asher looked up, then placed his head on top of my hand. They all had the same black lab and pit face. One opened its eyes, they were brighter than Asher’s and shone a golden brown.

“Hi little one,” I cooed. It cocked its head at me. Slowly, it stood. It was the exact opposite of Asher. All ash gray and white, with black around the nose and down the chest, with black socks on the paws. “Yeah, hi, you’re okay. Or at least you will be okay.” I held out a hand. Tentatively the puppy sniffed and crawled out from the group. Asher’s head had popped up and was now watching. The pup allowed me to run my fingers through its fur.

“Kit!” Sebastian called out. “Are you in here?”

“I’m here Bash!” The pup had froze, eyes ahead. Sebastian ducked inside, removing his hood.

“It smells awful in here,” his nose wrinkled up.

“Tell me about it, they must have been in here for a while,” I patted the ground next to me. He hesitated but eventually sat. The gray puppy continued forward, now sniffing Sebastian’s black jeans. Ash was now nudging another puppy forward, one that was just black with a white spot around its dark brown eyes. The pup turned and snapped at Ash.

“Hey!” I plucked the puppy up by the scruff of the neck. Boy dog. “We don’t bite!” He whimpered and tried to squirm in my grip. I frowned and held him to my chest, snuggled in my arms. Ash climbed into my lap. Two puppies left. I looked over at Sebastian, the gray puppy was laying in his lap, chin on his knee.

“Girl or boy?” I nodded at the puppy. He picked up the dog and showed the stomach to me. “Little girl dog!”

He placed her back down and rubbed her back, she let out a content sigh. It started to rain again. Slowly the other two puppies unfolded themselves from one another and came to us. One was female that was all black, the other male that was black with a gray beard down the chest. All were short haired, with soft floppy ears. Sebastian took the other female, I took the other male. After gathering everyone up in my arms, Ash stood on his back paws, front paws reaching up to me. I sighed and added him to the bundle.

“You know, this is pretty awesome, having all these puppies in my arms,” I laughed.

Sebastian put the puppies down and striped off his hoodie, then gathered them back up, wrapped up in his hoodie. “Tell no one,” he dead panned.

“Your secret is safe with me,” I smiled, then dead the same with my rain coat. It wouldn’t be as soft, but they would be kept dry. We ran back to the farm, both of us soaked from head to toe by the time we made it into the front door. We sat down all puppies, who dramatically shook off. I started the coffee.

“Towels are in the bathroom,” I nodded to the door. “I should also have a pair of gym shorts and a hoodie you can wear.” Sebastian disappeared into the bathroom before coming out with towels, he tossed one to me. I dried off as best as I could, then wrapped my hair up.

“I could never find out the secret of doing that,” Sebastian stared at me, before running the towel through his own hair. I turned on the sink, letting the water get warm.

“You have to make a sacrifice to Yoba in order to do it,” I said.

“Is that so?” Sebastian asked.

“It is so. Will you put some food in a bowl for them?” I rummaged under the sink until I found shampoo. When I looked back up all the puppies were gathered around the bowl, stuffing their faces. One by one I washed the puppies, who would then prance around, showing off their new clean coat. I had found an old blanket, that the all now slept on, in front of the fire place that Sebastian had started.

He had found the clothes I spoke of and changed into them and hung up his wet clothes by the fire place. He was on his second cup of coffee and was setting up my computer. I had finally changed into dry clothes and was starting lunch.

“Thanks again for your help,” I said.

“No problem, it was actually kind of fun,” he turned on the computer. “This is a nice set up. Omen Obelisk, right?”

“That’s her,” I smiled. “I did by it prebuilt though. It’s so much cheaper these days than building yourself.”

“It’s a shame isn’t?” Sebastian looked over at me.

“It is, it would of cost me another five hundred dollars to build,” I made a face. “Before it would be the opposite and you had this awesome experience of getting to build your baby.” I put the flowered meat on a skillet to brown.

“What are we having?” Sebastian leaned against the counter.

“Beef stew,” I moved to the small freezer and got out pulped frozen tomatoes. Every year I would go to the fresh market and buy a bunch then freeze them for stew and chili. Much better than the canned. I wondered if I could find out how to make them. “Since I tried to drown you in the rain, the least I can do is warm you back up.” I hadn’t realized what I said until the words were already out. But Sebastian still leaned against the counter, picking at his nails. “Thanks, I’m finally starting to feel my toes again.” He said, wiggling his toes.

I went about making lunch as Sebastian went through my stuff. He decided to busy himself and hook up my tv, the PS4 and Switch.

“You moved all the way out to BFE, to become a farmer, but couldn’t leave behind any electronics,” he laughed as he found my box of games.

“Pfft, no way,” I was waiting on the stew to boil. “I don’t have to give up my stuff, just because I moved out of the city.”

“We will be trading places soon,” Sebastian said, scooting over to the small table, he took another drink of coffee.

“Refill?” I asked.

“Sure,” he held up the cup while I poured.

“What do you mean trading places?” I asked putting the coffee pot back, then setting a pot to boil water for macaroni noodles.

“As soon as I have enough money saved up, I’m out of here,” he drank. “Bye Felicia.”

“Where are you going?” I asked.

“Zuzu probably,” Sebastian shrugged. I stared at him, blinking slowly. “Why?”

“Why?” Sebastian scoffed. “Why not? I still don’t understand why you came here. Like this, all this,” he motioned with his arms. “I couldn’t do this, I couldn’t give up living in the city to move to a farm.”

I added in the macaroni to the now boiling water, a deep frown etched onto my face. I cleared my throat and wiped at my eyes. “It has been a hard adjustment. But I think it was for the best.”

Sebastian shrugged. “Sam, Abs and I will be going into the city the last weekend of the month. We always go, help us unwind after the Flower Dance.”

“Flower Dance?” I asked. I filled two bowls with stew.

“Some cultish bullshit,” Sebastian shrugged. “Back in the day the Flower dance was done to promote fertility. Now we do it to make the old timers happy. Haylee gets really into it.”

“I can imagine that,” I set a bowl down in front of him, then sat across from him.

“Were you really here for that?” Sebastian asked then blew on the stew.

I shook my head. “No, I always came during the summer. I have been to the Luau and seen the Moonlight Jelly fish.”

Sebastian paused, spoon halfway to his mouth. Then nodded.

“You okay?” I asked.

“Mhmm, just thinking,” Sebastian nodded, then shoved the spoon into his mouth. He continued to eat like this, shoveling spoonful after spoonful into his mouth. Once he was done, I gave him a Tupperware container full of left overs and he left, saying he had work to finish up.

Now it was just myself and 5 puppies.

"It's really easy to play, you'll see !"

Connor made his adorable puppy eyes while looking at you, his head tilted on the side. He was confused by the pack of biscuits you just pulled out of your bag during the lunch break at the Police office.

"I bought them online with a ton of japanese food ! I love to try a lot of things like this."

He read the japanese caption of the package and furrowed a brow.

"Pocky ? Matcha tea flavour ?"

"Yes ! There is a lot of differents flavours, it's a thing in Japan. Anyway, I got this one we can try."

Opening the package, you looked around to be sure nobody were spying on the both of you and you focused on Connor, trying to ignore the little blush on your cheeks - maybe you used this as an excuse to kiss him, who knows ? Certainly not you, nope. No way.

"So, it's a game some japanese students like to play. You see, I just have to put the end of the biscuit in my mouth and you do the same on this other side." you explained with the worst blush you probably ever got in your whole life - you should buy a book about "how to be subtle at flirting' because damn, you were bad at this. Luckily, Connor was an android and didn't seem to notice.

"And what are we supposed to do after this ?" he asked, genuinely interested.

"We- we start to eat the biscuit little by little, until we reach the middle. Or if you pull out before this."

"I don't understand how we can win at this game. What is the point ?"

"Well, if you step back before eating your part, you lose and I win. But if we both reach the middle...we both win."

Connor nodded at your explanation and you decided to put the biscuit in your mouth. The RK800 eyed you for an awkward moment before doing the same, and you started to eat it. Purina vs IAMS

They were household brands and, at the time, two of just a few brands commonly seen in the grocery stores.

Not to sound like an old lady here, but back in my day, there weren’t big chain pet stores, and there weren’t any pet boutiques.

So, what happened to dog food companies like Purina and IAMS when the dog food market exploded?

I still see them on the shelves, but I tend to walk by them without thought.

However, I recently found out that my mom buys Purina for her dog. I was more than surprised to hear this and found out that it was our vet that recommended it.

I trust our vet and always go with their recommendations, but I couldn’t help but wonder why of all brands she would recommend Purina.

Are Mainstream Food Brands Any Good?

Vets are recommending this dog food now?

The last time I was in with one of my dogs for a check-up, I had to ask about her food recommendation.

My vet said she understood my surprise, but that brands like Purina and IAMS have really improved the quality and varieties of foods they offer.

Over the last several years, they have been forced to change to keep up with the growing market.

She also pointed out that the boutique foods are under scrutiny by the FDA as to the long-term effects concerning dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).

The concern with the “boutique” foods is that they believe the grain-free foods are the cause of the increase in cases of dogs suffering from DCM.

So, many veterinarians are falling back on more tried and true brands such as Purina and IAMS.

Then at the end of my visit, the vet suggested I try ALPO kibble for Daisy.

She laughed at the look on my face when she suggested it. But she stated that it is a balanced diet and a lot of seniors that are picky eaters, like Daisy, tend to like it.

Purina’s Company History

Purina has a very long history, stretching as far back as 1894[1].

Back then it went by the name of Robinson-Danforth Commission Company for two of the three founders.

In 1902, they changed the name to Ralston Purina.

They originally started as a farm animal food company but over the years evolved into one of the biggest dog food companies in the industry.

In 1987, Purina shared their findings after a fourteen-year research project. The research proved feeding your dog appropriate foods throughout the different life stages can significantly impact the health and longevity of your dog.

In 1988, Purina launched the first hypoallergenic food that isolated the allergens and removed them from the food, creating a diet that was nutritious as well as safe for dogs with food allergies to eat.

In the 1980’s, IAMS introduced their life stage dog formulas.

Then, in the 1990s, IAMS launched their natural dog food line and publicized their findings regarding the positive effects of fatty acids on a dog’s skin and coat.

IAMS was privately owned until 1999, when Procter and Gamble purchased it[3]. When P&G purchased IAMS Co, they announced  their intentions of expanding IAMS globally.

IAMS Proactive Health Smart Puppy – Large breed

This food is designed to help large breed puppies grow and develop at the proper pace. It also contains Omega-3 DHA to aid in brain development.

Purina has only had one dog food recall in the last ten years.

IAMS Proactive Health Adult Minichunks’ ingredients list

Purina’s first ingredient is chicken, which is one of the natural sources for glucosamine.

Also, this food contains a variety of grains rice, wheat, and corn. There are a lot of added vitamins and nutrients listed, but not a lot of superfoods like spinach or blueberries.

However, they do use a variety of kibble to enhance the texture of the food.

IAMS first ingredient is also chicken, followed by two different grains.

IAMS also includes dried beet pulp to enhance the digestibility and promote good GI health. Also, this blend includes superfoods like blueberries, spinach, and apples.

Price/Value

  Winner: IAMS   

The average price per pound for IAMS is a hair over one dollar per pound. For Purina, it’s three cents more expensive per pound.

The ingredients are pretty similar, but IAMs won because of the additional superfoods.

Combined with the ingredients and lower price, IAMS won for price and value as well.

Both brands can be found at the larger pet stores and online.

However, Purina is also available at more grocery stores and some boutique pet stores.

Never mind, yes, I can imagine.

Purina has the “tender meaty morsels,” which I thought dogs would prefer over standard dry kibble, but I guess I was proved wrong.

X-Factor

  Winner: Purina   

Both companies support their communities, but Purina’s work stood out more to me.

Purina:

Donates $10,000,000 annually to Rescue Bank[9]. Rescue Bank aids animal rescues through donating foods from various animal food vendors.

Also, with the ability to find Purina almost anywhere is a big bonus.

The X factor doesn’t always make a significant impact on the decision-making process, but I am enamored with companies that support their communities.

Final Thoughts

I am honestly surprised at how impressed I am with the two brands.

Both companies surprised me with how much they have evolved over the years. They each offer an impressive selection of quality dog food, and they both have fewer recalls than I had expected.

I didn’t expect they would have higher recalls because I thought they were terrible brands but because of the volume of food they produced and sold.

Both Purina and IAMS are companies that I would confidently recommend to friends and families looking for a specialty dog food.

Occasionally, after researching a dog food company, I come away disappointed.

However, today I am happy to say both companies impressed me with the quality of food they offer.
