ONEOSEVEN Low pH Chaga Cleanser Review 💦
Product. You can find a full-length description of the claims & ingredients of this product online, so I’ll keep this short. This cleanser goes from a jelly to light foam and is meant to be gentle, hydrating, and brightening. It’s stated as a vegan-friendly product that gently exfoliates the skin (which I believe is both chemical and physical—it has a small amount of physical particles inside which are green tea leaf powder!).
My experience. The consistency of this is really interesting to me. It’s not your typical gel cleanser texture but it’s more like a jello. It’s almost like egg whites if you’re familiar with that sort of texture. Anyways, it’s gentle enough not to irritate my acne-prone, dry, easily-irritated skin, and it really doesn’t leave my skin feeling dry or tight like some stronger foaming cleansers often do. Like I mentioned, this one does have green tea leaf powder in it, which look and feel like little seed-like bits. I typically don’t use any sort of physical exfoliator because they can be harmful to the skin (and chemical exfoliators do wonders all on their own). But I think this one is mild enough that if you’re gentle in applying it to your face, it shouldn’t be a problem. That being said, if you’re a scrub junkie but you’re trying to wean off of physical exfoliators, this might be a good compromise for you. It does have a scent to it, a sort of fruity herbal smell, which I think is a refreshing, pleasant scent.
Recommendations. I don’t have anything extreme to say here—I think this is a great option for an everyday gentle cleanser, especially for dry to normal skin types and/or as a morning cleanser (I always recommend a gentler cleanser in the morning, or just using good ol’ water). If you’re a fan of anything scrub textured, you may especially like this as a cleanser. And even though I said dry to normal skin types, this is safe (and probably a great option) no matter what skin type(s) you have. This cleanser has that bouncy, fruity, refreshing feel that I think fits well for this Spring season and upcoming Summer—it just feels aesthetically right, lol. But anyways, if you’ve been on the search for a gentle & refreshing cleanser that’ll help brighten up your dull skin, definitely check this one out.

Makeup Without the Markup
Some people are lucky enough to have one good idea in life that they then build into a successful business. Marcia Kilgore had five.
First, in 1996, she founded Bliss, a New York City beauty emporium with a cult following that mushroomed into a lucrative line of beauty products and later became the first North American acquisition made by LVMH, for an estimated $30 million.
Then there was the affordable bath, body and cosmetics brand, Soap & Glory, which became a staple of British bathrooms and was sold to the drugstore chain Boots Alliance in 2014. Next came an ergonomic footwear line, FitFlop; and then Soaper Duper, a vegan bath and body products label.
But it is her fifth company, Beauty Pie, that the 52-year-old serial entrepreneur believes to be her best idea yet.
“I’ve had some good ones in the past,” Ms. Kilgore said. “I’m proud of them all. But Beauty Pie? Beauty Pie eclipses the rest.”
Beauty Pie, which has its headquarters in London, began operations four years ago and is a buyers’ club for beauty addicts. Members pay a monthly membership fee for backdoor access to some of the world’s best fragrance, skin care and cosmetics factories, many of which supply big-name luxury brands that go on to charge sky-high multiples for the products once they are stamped with their logo. With Beauty Pie, members can get regular deliveries of Japanese skin cleansers and South Korean serums, Italian lipsticks and perfumes sourced from Grasse in France, all of which arrive in signature rosy pink packaging.
The idea came to Ms. Kilgore one afternoon in a Milan train station as she made her way back from a beauty manufacturing region in Italy known as Lipstick Valley. She had about $5,000 worth of free samples from local factories in a shoulder bag.
“I suddenly thought, ‘What if all the women who usually buy these products in Sephora or department stores could have this feeling that I have right now?’” Ms. Kilgore recalled. “That they were getting a great deal by cutting out the middlemen. That they could access beauty at real cost, meaning they could go on and afford and explore so much more in terms of great products. I knew making customers feel good like that had real power, even if it would also put some noses in the industry out of joint.”
After all, making clients feel good is what energized her businesses from the beginning. Ms. Kilgore was born in 1968 in Saskatchewan, Canada. Her father died when she was 11. Money was tight, and after high school, she moved to New York with $300.
For several years she worked as a personal trainer, and then, having taken an aesthetician’s course after recurring bouts of acne, Ms. Kilgore found a new niche: offering facials from her East Village apartment.
In 1996, she opened the Bliss Spa in SoHo. A Vogue article waxed lyrical about her rubs, peels and wraps. Oprah Winfrey and Calvin Klein and Madonna became clients. The waiting lists for treatments like the Quadruple Thighpass and Double Oxygen facial with Ms. Kilgore were up to 18 months long. (In 1997, Julia Roberts told People that even she sometimes had a hard time getting an appointment.)
A kitschy best-selling product line followed, as did spas and a decade of 90-hour workweeks for Ms. Kilgore and her team, who would relax customers with King Kong videos in the electrolysis room and talk to them like old girlfriends.
“Bliss stood out as a brand because it had a personality that was quirky and interesting and different from everything else out there back then, just like Marcia herself,” said the beauty entrepreneur Bobbi Brown.
“She was also a shrewd pioneer who opened up a whole new lucrative sector of the health and beauty sector,” Ms. Brown said. “She has never been someone who is afraid of taking chances.”
With each of her ventures Ms. Kilgore appears able to bottle and then sell a moment in the beauty zeitgeist, an industry once dominated by a handful of global behemoths. In recent years, however, independent start-ups have proliferated, their success buoyed by innovative products, social media savvy and eager consumers.
Beauty Pie has arrived at a time when shoppers are more aware than ever of how and where their products are made and increasingly prize transparency from retailers. Online subscriptions, for toiletries and flowers and household goods, have also grown in popularity, particularly since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
An annual Beauty Pie membership costs $99, or starts at $10 a month, which then includes lower prices on more than 300 products.
“At one point I thought I might need to get a bulletproof vest for ruffling the feathers of the beauty old guard with all this, that I couldn’t do it, that everyone might hate me,” Ms. Kilgore said from Geneva, where she lives with her husband and two children. With skin so luminous that it cuts through the fuzz of the Zoom screen, she is an alluring ambassador for her brand — including on social media, where she frequently offers tips and solicits feedback on new releases.
“But then I thought about it again,” Ms. Kilgore said. “This is about democratizing luxury beauty. It is about respecting the intelligence and needs of a customer I know I understand.”
If she had given in to her fears, she said, “I would hate myself. If you are almost too terrified to do something, there is usually a reason. The reason being it’s a really good idea.”
Some industry observers have pointed out that for a Beauty Pie membership to make financial sense in terms of overall savings, the volume of purchases has to be well into the hundreds of dollars. Others have noted that at a time when the sector is heaving with innovation and choice, not all beauty aficionados will want to commit their beauty budget in one place, and that the multiple levels of membership could be confusing to some shoppers.
Ms. Kilgore said that since March memberships and revenue are both up significantly, though she declined to provide figures for the company. She did, however, disclose that Beauty Pie had recently taken on venture capital investment — the first time she has taken outside funding for any of her businesses.
“For the first few years I just put all inbound interest from investors in a folder,” Ms. Kilgore said. “But if you want to play in this arena and want to get the best talent hired into your business, then you do need to have that funding.” She noted that the money raised from Index Ventures, Balderton Capital and General Catalyst would be used in part to improve Beauty Pie’s technology operations and marketing reach and to increase its product range.
Danny Rimer of Index Ventures said that it took a long time to persuade Ms. Kilgore that it would be worthwhile to work with investors
“Marcia has built everything on her own until now, but we knew we had to convince her,” Mr. Rimer said. “There is nothing more important to an investment, early or late stage — even with a great product — than the entrepreneur behind it. We have to be convinced that this person has been placed on the planet to build their vision into a business.”
Ms. Kilgore described herself as a “wild workaholic,” albeit one whose usually relentless travel schedule had been curbed by this year’s lockdown measures. Lately, downtime has involved meditation apps, learning Mandarin and French, and going for hikes in the mountains near her home with a 45-pound vest. Not most people’s idea of relaxing, perhaps, but she said she wouldn’t have it any other way.
After the sales of previous ventures like Bliss and Soap & Glory made her wealthy, Ms. Kilgore had mulled taking a step back from the roller coaster of start-up life.
Then, she said, she realized that “working on how to bring people joy” is what makes her happy, “from the days when I did three part-time jobs to support my mom in high school or when I did facials sitting on a crate in my apartment and then watched my clients float out the door.”
“It just gives me the biggest thrill,” she said. “And I’m not ready to give that up.”

Professional Beauty London 2019
The last Sunday and Monday of February, all roads lead to the ExCel Centre. Why? Professional Beauty hosted the UK’s largest Beauty and Spa trade show.
Pro Beauty brings some of the biggest brands together making them available to their customers under one roof. This allows consumers to see new launches first hand as well as trying out products and treatment. The two-day event, provides a range of events for attendees from CPD accredited activities to wellness workshop to live stage demonstrations.
I have been to this event before but was a bit overwhelmed, so I was not able to take everything in as I would have liked. But this year, I came armed with my trainers, coffee, bottled water and an eager friend ready to see everything. My main aim was to see as many brands as physically possible within one day as I could not attend the event on Monday, due to work.
I had no brand, in particular, I wanted to see as I wanted to see as many brands as possible, but once I had seen the event programme and map, I saw a few of my favourite brands were in attendance so I made note of that to see what kind of discount they’ll be doing on the day. Walking around a lot of brands were very approachable. You could see there was a sense of community with some brands even though there are competition, they were happy to see each other at the show, which was warming.
As I was attending the event as a Blogger, I had access to some complimentary treatments at the show. There were a handful that I want to try out but couldn’t due to long queues or long treatment time (2hrs for a Russian Manicure!). I did manage to get a complimentary gift bag from Vagheggi Spa which contained a ‘shake to activate’ makeup remover that I am obsessed with right now. There were a number of brands offering facials which I would have loved to try out but I made the rookie mistake of coming to the show with a full face of makeup. Lesson learned for next year.
After spending six hours at the show, I had seen all the brands I could bring myself to see and I felt like I didn't really make a dent in seeing all the brands! If I go again next year I am going to try to go over the two days to see everything available. I lost track of time and unfortunately was not able to attend any of the workshops I booked myself onto. There were a good range of workshops and talks happening throughout the day, something for all types of attendees. There is truly a lot on offer from discounted products to getting a facial scan and seeing what areas of your face have UV damage or starting to get wrinkles and being advised what products to use to prevent further damage.
I purchased and was gifted a lot of goodies on the day which I have been excited to try out and use! Last year when I attended Pro Beauty, I was gifted a beauty sponge that is the best beauty sponge I’ve used and have needed to replace it for over 4/5 months but couldn’t remember the brands name, so when I saw the sponge at Nanshy’s booth I was excited I bought their marble blender and also bought their ‘drop of finesse’ blending sponge to try out. Not far from the Nanshy booth was Make Up For Ever, like the majority of brands in attendance Make Up For Ever had discounted their products which was music to my ears, I got their Ultra HD Foundation and Full Cover Concealer (which might be featured in a future Foundation Friday).
If you have been reading any of my skincare posts or follow me on Insta, you’d know I love a sheet mask or two, especially if they are by the brand Vitamasque. I purchased four masques from their Gemstone Collection, I have been eyeing these masques due to their therapeutic claims and the masks are coloured! I also got Vitamasques’ Pearl Sheet Masque to see if it’ll help to brighten my skin after those long work days. Keeping on theme with sheet masks, I came across another Korean Beauty Brand I’d not heard of, Miin. Miin are a Korean Cosmetic online distributor. Not wanting to add too much to the 100s of sheet masks I am slowly accumulating I purchased their Marine Jewel Hydrating Mask. As much as I love my sheet masks, I do dabble with clay masks which I have been applying with my hands, so I had to take up the chance to buy a mask brush from Love Grove Essentials. It was inexpensive and is a study, good quality brush.
Walking around, brands were giving out samples if you signed up to their newsletter or if you posted about their stand on social media. I have a handful of samples from brands. From Elemis, samples of their Superfood Mask and their Night Recovery Cream-Oil. A cleanser from Murad. A little goody bag from Candy Coat, with their Lipstick and Candy Coat Hand Mirror and other treats. Collagen drink samples from Skinglo. The last sample is a powered energy sachet from Arbonne.
I was invited to show by Pro Beauty. So I was gifted an extra goody bag that included a bunch of treats from exhibitors on the day. Yamuna Cosmetics included a pen and an orange/cinnamon vegan soap, that smells heavenly. The goody bag also included some more treats from Arbonne another energy drink sachet in another flavour (pomegranate) and a makeup primer sample. I am assuming that collagen is a big thing in the beauty industry right now, due to the number of collagen drinks present on the day and in the goody bag, it contained a 10-day collagen drink program by Gold Collagen. MS International Investments gifted a hairbrush and Newton Wood gave some Epsom Salt crystals. Skin Evolution gifted some Dr Renaud travel size skincare samples. Proto-col, an advanced skincare brand, gifted a hand cream (which is perfect for my field of work) and a miracle balm which is a multi-purpose balm that can be used on dry skin. Lastly, Lucis College an establishment that teaches a range of Holistic therapies, gifted a Rose Quartz Crystal. This may be my favourite item in the gift bag, as I’ve wanted to get into crystals for at least a year but did not know where to start!
Professional Beauty is a great day out for people who work in the beauty industry or whether you’re just an enthusiast like me, I recommend you go at least for a day to see what it’s like for yourself. What Are Dairy-Free Probiotics?
Dairy-free probiotics are specifically probiotic foods and supplements that do not contain milk or other products from cows or other livestock. Dairy-free probiotics are thus lactose-free. Many people around the world have an intolerance to lactose – the sugar in milk – and, according to a 2013 report, 75 percent of people with lactose-intolerance or milk allergies either reduce their dairy consumption or go dairy-free altogether as a way to manage symptoms.[1] Other people may want to avoid dairy for health reasons or because they live a vegan lifestyle, avoiding dairy, meat and animal products.
What Is Lactose-intolerance?
According to the NIH, 65% of people around the world – that’s 30 to 50 million people in the United States alone – have a hard time digesting lactose beyond infancy.[2, 3] Some people also have a true allergy to the proteins in milk, including the protein casein. While some people will use the terms allergy, sensitivity and intolerance interchangeably, allergy and lactose intolerance are quite different. An allergy is when the body’s immune system sees a substance – milk protein in this case – as a foreign invader, or allergen, and then the body produces antibodies in response. The allergic reaction can range from mild — itching, red skin — to severe, causing an inability to breathe due to swelling in the throat, or even anaphylactic shock. Fortunately, there are far fewer milk allergies compared with lactose-intolerance – 2-3% of the population in the developed world, though that still makes it the most common food allergy among kids.
In contrast, people with lactose-intolerance do not produce adequate lactase, the enzyme that breaks down lactose, the sugar within milk. People who are lactose-intolerant experience different symptoms from people with a milk allergy. Lactose-intolerance causes digestive symptoms, including stomach pain, diarrhea, gas, and bloating.

Widely heralded in Japan for their healing and therapeutic properties, umeboshi plums – also called Japanese salty plums or ume plums – are a source of probiotics but are less well known in the Western world. Famously used by Samurai warriors to provide strength for battle, the plums have an alkalizing effect on the body. The ume fruit is pickled in brine along with shiso leaf. You can buy these plums pickled, as an umeboshi paste, or even as umeboshi vinegar – which is actually not vinegar, but the brine the plums are pickled in.

Step Away From Ulta–Have An Effective Beauty Routine With Dropping $$$
In the past five or so years, the beauty industry has exploded. YouTubers and celebrity makeup artists alike often recommend multiple products to achieve the perfect base—and that’s before we move on to eyebrow stuff. Markets once considered niche—like natural beauty and Korean skincare products–now cater to the mainstream. Flip through any traditional women’s magazine, and you’ll probably find indications that we should be obsessed with makeup *and* skincare.
As a beauty writer, I find this buzzing market leaves me with no shortage of topics, and I can be pleasantly lead down a number of minute but seemingly essential research questions—which form of vitamin C is the most effective and the most stable? Does my SPF foundation really provide enough coverage—or must I grease up with a layer of sunscreen?!
As a beauty lover and consumer, however, I get easily overwhelmed. There are simply too many choices and too many celeb/blogger (guilty!)/professional endorsements to keep straight. Despite this abundance of choices, we rarely know that a product will actually work for us until we’ve invested in it and spent time using it. Meanwhile, the latest issue of Marie Claire arrives on our doorsteps, featuring yet another must-have product we’re probably missing out on. Whether it’s a $ 50 cult eyeshadow palette, a best-selling lip kit, or the latest change-your-life night serum, there’s always something!
Most of us don’t want to spend oodles on beauty every month. Not only do we have to pay rent, more and more of us are conscious of the waste produced by everyday purchases, and we’d like to minimize as much of that as possible, which makes taking a gamble on a product we may not even like seem all the riskier.
Phew.
At the end of the day, though, I still believe beauty should and can be fun. For those of us who can afford the luxury of a beloved lipstick or our desert-island moisturizer, beauty can be about self-care and self-expression.
To this end, I’ve considered the following ways to engage in the ever-exciting-yet-overstimulating beauty market while keeping your sanity and maintaining a simple beauty routine that actually works for you.
Choose your trends carefully. Not every trend looks good on everyone. For example, I knew mauve, matte lips would make me look partially dead, so I was glad to skip that trend and stick to more flattering, dewy lips. Ultimately, you’ll want to stick to the “classics”—as you define them—if you’re looking to save money and waste.
Research products and ingredients. Before jumping on the latest skincare product, do some research on it and the active ingredients. When in doubt, stick to tried-and-true ingredients like vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, AHAs and BHA, and non-comedogenic face oils. Many of these staple ingredients also multi-task. For example, vitamin C is anti-aging and skin-brightening, so it can help you tackle two issues at once.
Hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in skin, and a healthy supply helps keep skin healthy and supple.
Read reviews from real people. When you’re shopping online, try to find a site that sells the product in question and features both positive and negative reviews. (Sometimes it seems like brand websites only post the five-star reviews!) Sephora is just one example of an online store that features pages and pages of reviews for a particular product. While you’re at it, focus on the reviews that give a little background information, and don’t lend too much weight to a review that simply says “love it!” or “hate it!”
Remember what works for you. Whether it’s a brand, an ingredient, or a color, there are beauty staples that just work for you. So if you’ve found, say, the eyeshadow palette the emphasizes your eyes *just right,* don’t let advertisements or beautiful displays make you feel pressured to try a palette you’re just not so sure about.
Get samples or travel-size portions when you want to try something new. If there’s a product you’re really interested in, but you’re not sure you’re ready to fully commit, see if you can get a sample or a travel-sized container (especially if said container is reusable and TSA-friendly!). Again, this technique is best for products we’re actually thinking about buying. We don’t want random samples cluttering up the bathroom! Not to mention, our complexions probably don’t appreciate crazy skincare cocktails made from a dozen different products.
Remember that packaging does not equal performance. This one is hard for me because I’m so aesthetically driven, but even I have to admit that sometimes the products in modest packaging with modest price tags are the best! Instead of thinking of the beauty product, think of the final product—how it will look/perform on you!
Consider why you’re shopping. I used to make beauty purchases when I felt less than whole or somehow unworthy of xyz in my life. This is *not* the time to go shopping. Yoga, journalling, time with friends—anything is better than shopping when you feel this way! I usually ended up with over-priced impulse buys that didn’t do a lot to serve me in the long run. Now, I only let myself beauty shop when I have a goal in mind—like, I need to replace my crusty mascara, or I’m looking for a vitamin C serum that’s also moisturizing, etc. No more of that I feel existentially gross…Ulta is obviously the answer. 😉
