🌿🦋Greetings Fireflies! I’ve been thinking of you and sending big bursts of love and affection In all your directions! I know I haven’t been posting as much as I used to, it’s because I’m still catching up with orders and getting ready for the shops reopening, but I do want to share with you some of the new offerings I’ve been working on! Some of them are new takes from older offerings such as this one. I had made some Yule Tree candles a few years back but wanted to buy a warm, summer solstice twist to them!🌟One question I get asked a lot is “do your candles melt in transit during the hot months?” and the answer is~it hasn’t happened yet! I am super super careful on how I wrap my parcels and always give my candles a good while to cure, no one had ever complained to me about a melty candle and most of my customers live in hot areas like Arizona, Texas and California! The only thing that sucks is that I can’t send you a piece of chocolate like I normally do, and that’s a bummer! But please don’t ever be afraid of ordering candles during the hot months of the year! ‘Tis the Season: A Reflection

I’ve been thinking a lot recently on how I want my December to feel, on the quality of energy I want to embody in this season. Historically, somewhere beginning in November, I begin to make my gift list and brainstorm ideas. Family members, friends, neighbors – people close to me either by blood, work, heart or geographic location – who I feel it’s appropriate that I gift to. This year, as the first swirlings of this habit arrived in the front yard of my mind, I paused. I paused and just listened.

I listened to my body – how did she respond to this task, this list, the thought of hours spent on amazon or etsy…simultaneously seeking a perfect match and an ethical or at least handmade/local type of gift for each? Or, in exhaustion, (I analyze, read reviews and search diligently) ditching those values and just buying what I know might be useful or fun for each? Hours of time and sometimes frustration or anxiety that could be spent otherwise – reading, being in nature, on a date with any human on said list….

My body got anxious and kind of turned off. Even though my love for the humans on this list is very real, the automated habit of holiday gifting felt insincere, rushed, tiresome….and more than anything, as time not well spent, for me at least. Even for someone like me who loves local artistry, handmade salts & spices, encouraging reading by gifting books – my body was breathing that there was something even deeper to the meaning of this season. That’s what I’m still seeking and allowing to come through clearly.  

I listened to her recent urging for more rest, sleep and quiet time. As the nights get longer during this season, she naturally nudges me to go to bed earlier and, when I can, to rest longer.

An interior pull to Stillness, to Rest.

Inward.

Isn’t this what Nature does in this season? (At least in the northern hemisphere!) Looking around, the plants slowly grow dormant and stop their outward thriving, almost to a full stop, just enough to breathe, take in sun, and nourish themselves.... 

The night extends herself beginning very early (especially here in Arizona!) so even around 5:30pm, she creeps in and she generously lays her dark, starry sky over  us easily until 7:00am or later….Temperatures dip, even here in the desert, and once the sun recedes, it’s naturally time to be inside, warming with a cup of tea, lighting some candles or using the fireplace. It’s not like the warmer seasons, when the sun is out all evening, encouraging outdoor play, activity for longer amounts of time, early rising times to get moving. Nature is now in the season of slowing down, slowing way down. And yet all the world is rushing around in a flurry of hurry with checklists and trappings…

The plants themselves teach us how best to embody this season: slow the breathing, go inward, nourish. Make no extreme outward movements or striving, or forcing fruit to bear, as it is not the season for that. It is the season to tend to the roots, to do the inner workings, to prepare for when the sun returns, so that when she does, the plant in her fullness will be ready to grow and bloom (forgive the pronouns, most things are by default a she in my brain!) Without this season of stillness and inner tending, the plant will have skipped over a very integral part of her life cycle. Her bloom may never happen or will not have the roots to endure.  

So, I think of all these things.

I ask myself, what am I celebrating? Why gift? What and where is the magic of this season? I believe it is magical, I intuitively sense a preparation time, an expectation and a jubilant feel of something….I want to find what that is for me, because it’s not what it used to be…but I know there are gifts and mysteries in each season to seek, find and enjoy.

And I think of the holiday culture in which I grew up – much of which did feel merry and bright, thanks to a family life that was warm and loving, and had the means to provide year after year beautifully decorated trees with an abundance of gifts underneath. Family gatherings, snow outings, Christmas carols on the piano & guitar…And even more recent memories with friends to glittering towns, gardens with light shows and holiday festivals. Season after season of making homemade cards with gold & silver stamps of sleighs & reindeer strung with ribbons of green and red. I love all of these memories and do not disdain them in any way – as they are happy, heartfelt times with people I love or doing things that I love. And I will continue to do those things and be with those people, insofar as it all brings me & us delight. I also acknowledge and am grateful that Life provided me with magical memories of the holiday seasons, as I know they are not always this way for many people. I’m grateful, I treasure them and yet, as I grow into myself, I seek to find meaning in this season beyond the traditions of the culture I grew up in, to find rituals that imbue me with light and warmth. And if not rituals per se, at least ways of being that feel full, bright and aligned with my body and with the natural world.

Thinking back to a time without electricity, our ancestors’ life revolved around the sun and when the night got longer, they gathered inside with a steaming hot beverage around candlelight. It was cold and dark outside, so before cars and other comfortable ways to travel in uncomfortable weather, a town’s social life also slowed down, as folks were not going out to parties and festivities in the snowy and chilly nights on foot. Or at least much less than they did during the other seasons, when it was pleasant and easy to walk a few miles. Church and the market maybe once a week. The harvest seasons were over, the fields had been reaped. Crops and gardens were all closed up for the season. Families & neighbors hunkered down at home, staying by the fire, telling stories, making things with nature like wreaths & berries, branches to pass the time, reading, writing by candlelight, using up foods that had been stored from the harvest season. Nourishing themselves on hot, hearty foods, to keep their bodies warm and bellies full. Like our friends the bears, it was the season to go inside, fatten up, and rest! This is what I imagine anyway…

Even in the Christian calendar, this is the season of Advent, which used to be my ultimate favorite season of the church year, when I was still a believer in all things Christian. It was a season of waiting, of more prayer, of stillness, a season of light and darkness, of rituals, but also a joyful and expectant season. It was the utmost church Season of Preparation. Preparing oneself for the Light. Pulling from the natural world (and earlier pagan traditions, which the Church did & does for many of her feasts,) where humanity awaited the return of the sun on the Winter Solstice, Christianity awaited the “Son” on Christmas, the “Light of the World” to be born. Same mysteries, different details, yet in each a slowing, a stillness, a watching, waiting, an expectant pause, a preparatory time, an inward time. Both echoing Nature herself.

I gather up all these ideas, traditions and observations of this season historically, to what this season has become present-day. It feels kind of irreverent to even call it a season anymore because season feels like it should be reserved for nature and natural cycles, whereas what happens during these months nowadays is certainly not of a natural cycle. It’s more properly a mania, an obsession, or in a milder sense, a cultural obligation or habit even. The world rushing around to purchase items, crossing names of. Celebrating what exactly? This is what I’m seeking for myself.

I guess what I’m saying here is that for me, these months more and more have become a time of the faster the outside world spins, the more I slow down. (And no shade to those who find joy in the search for the perfect gifts, or who love the thrill of the rush of the holidays...I’m just writing about my personal experience and how I am feeling called to explore it this year.)

I’ve elected to live at the pace of the plants and trees I see each day as I bike to work. Still, quiet, tending. Letting the world zoom by them & content in their little patch of earth they call Home.

I want to obey the sun and be active a little less, and hidden a little more.

I want to be like the birds and woodland animals that burrow into some warm, cozy place and spend most of their days there, maybe with 1 or 2 others from their flock or pack, whispering, sharing snacks and diving deep. (Do you see the squirrels and birds doing this in your imagination? I totally see and hear them! This is my inner world, Welcome!)

I want to be like the rest of Nature, which focuses inward, nourishing roots, economizing outward activity, focusing on depth and inner vitality.

A tending to the Inner Brightness.

This is the type of season I want to feel and live.

So, that when the Sun does arrive on the Solstice, we are both more radiant and ready to shine brighter into the world.
