Y'know, it's cases like Orchard's (and even "hunter" personalities like Mamämax) that make me genuinely perplexed on why predatory individuals will ride the highest horse against their own behaviour. I know it's a way to deflect attention from their own nasty shit, but it's always a self-defeating method once the same community that rallied in their name learns about the contrary.
What's worse is that they can fall from upon high into the deepest shit, and have the gall to walk right back into the townsquare, covered in their crimes like nothing happened.
Often enough, some- if not many- of the townsfolk will re-cover their eyes with wool too.
#vee vibrates#“You are not immune to propaganda” really fuckin applies here because even *I myself* (as a young unaware teen having survived horrors) ...#... looked to Max for hope. That people cared about bringing justice to survivors when the courts were too lazy and negligent to.#Again I was just a teen who had been taught L&R that people like Chris Hansen were Saviors of Children in the flesh.#So as I grew up and Max's details/videos started fumbling I realized that something was wrong with how invested he was in his cause.#The “I could cancel you Charlie bc I'm the ped hunter” comment made me realize what a megalomaniac he was & how he profitted from his role.#This isn't to say that ALL advocates for something are bad people trying to hide their sins. B&W thinking like that gets people killed.#But it's mindboggling to see those who make their advocacy their entire identity/reason for living often be the same perps of the same abuse#Again absolutely not always. I think the biggest distinguisher is seeing what an advocate is getting out of their work.#If their goals are outward-oriented (i.e bettering life for all) with little to no financial benefit then it's hopefully a noble indicator.#If there is a pull to “amass funds to help the cause” and that money is solely going to the advocate for them to “distribute themselves”#I'd wager that's a massive red flag because even in my own experiences with IRL advocacy & organizing. it. doesn't happen like that.#Dons are carefully stored with and kept track of via 3rd parties BECAUSE dons are heavily preyed upon by misery profiteers joining the cause#(This is ofc highly dependent on if access to 3rd parties is around; something that causes like for 🍉 have to adjust around for example)#But yeah huge red flag if the advocate is not only trying to get all the spotlight away from actual sufferers/victims but the money too.#Orchard & Max are extremely alike in this regard even if Orchard's “advocacy” is just more bigotry lol.

Okay we need to talk about Kage for a sec ‘cause yeah I love Bojji and all but not many people are talking about Kage 👀
Also MAJOR SPOILERS for Ranking of Kings ahead (up until episode 18)!
So as we all know, Kage tells Bojji:
And Kage has shown time and time again that he’s Bojji’s biggest support.
But who’s gonna be in Kage’s corner huh!?!?!??!?
Obviously Bojji is also looking out for Kage, but I think Kage sees it differently. It hurts me SO much to see Kage almost unconsciously hold himself as “lower” than Bojji, or “less important”, in the smallest ways. It’s giving me Steven Universe Pearl and Connie vibes:
There are a few things that make me feel this:
1. He’s Bojji’s biggest advocate, yet doesn’t seem to advocate much for himself (does Kage need training or help? Kage seems laser focused on helping Bojji achieve his goals, and nothing else). He gets really teary/emotional really quickly when there’s even the slightest obstacle in Bojji’s way, even though he basically just met him.
Even giving up his “life savings” (that he stole from Bojji, but anyways) to help him:
Why is Kage so attached to Bojji, so early? Because Bojji is the first genuinley good person he can believe in? Because he sees himself in Bojji, maybe? Because Bebin tasked him with helping Bojji and he took that responsibility to heart, glad that someone was able to trust him after he’d been mistreated his whole life? Either way, the moment he said he’d be in Bojji’s corner, he was advocating for him aggressively.
2. He volunteers to take on all the chores by himself so Bojji can focus on self-improvement and training.
This doesn’t seem sad by itself but I just couldn’t stop thinking about when he had to do all those chores for that guy that took him in:
I don’t know, this just really hurt my heart. Like he wants Bojji to rest and relax and focus on himself. Kage doesn’t care that he has to take the workload of the chores, he’s good at them and wants to see Bojji succeed. But Kage needs rest and relaxation too! And maybe some training of his own!
3. Kage almost “mothers” Bojji, and he puts aside his own feelings to make Bojji happy. Like when Bojji was feeling all those conflicted feelings towards Domas, and Kage is a teary ball as usual:
No you don’t! Deal with your own feelings first Kage, you’re a teary sad anxious ball who’s probably also having a full out emotional flashback to your own dang trauma!
But no, he quickly puts aside his own feelings and puts on a huge smile for Bojji to cheer him up:
And he plays a little game with him. This made me so sad. Kage is such a good friend but the smile and the sing-song voice he was using here was so heartbreaking, he was trying to seem put together for Bojji and Bojji only.
The cherry on top of heart breaking moments for me though is generally how teary Kage gets, but also more specifically how teary he got in episode 18 this week when Bojji was protecting him and he couldn’t do a damn thing:
Kage is fucking LOSING IT. Full on PTSD flashbacks here to his mom dying:
Frozen in fear. He wants to do something to help Bojji, his whole purpose of being here was to help Bojji, and he can’t do a damn thing. He’s stuck watching everyone he’s grown bonded to (and he’s shown to get attached super quickly) die.
Of course, until it all finally accumulates, and we reach the episode’s cliffhanger:
I’m SO glad they didn’t just sideline Kage. Kage’s got a whole ass arc here. This development showed me that all the “red flags” I was seeing in Kage weren’t going to be ignored. He’s got a tragic backstory that still needs exploring, and I’m excited to see what’s coming next.
But damn he deserves better...so SO much better.
#kage#osama ranking#ousama ranking#ranking of kings#screaming crying throwing up over kage#he deserves sooooo much#of course bojji does too and I LOVE bojji#but kage just tugs my heart strings so much because he consistently puts himself aside for Bojji#while repressing all his own shit#someone please hold kages hands and look him in the eyes and tell him he's worth the world and more#musings

Hello!
This will be my official “introductory” post!
My real name is Erica, but I go by many names. My nickname repertoire includes but is not limited to: Lumi, Lumini, Cricket (I have a habit of rubbing my feet together, lmao), Jinx, Eri, Er, EriJoy, Sunbaeby, and Aceir (my real name but in alphabetical order).
This is my first ever Tumblr blog. I’ve had it for a while but have rarely posted anything, that along with the fact that I’m on mobile is kind of a mess so I apologize for mistakes and all that.
I have 3 older brothers, an older sister, and a younger brother.
I’m an ambivert. Sometimes I love hanging out with bigger groups of people, other times I dread it.
I’ve taken the “16personalities” test 4 times and all 4 put me in the “Diplomat” category, however I got “Advocate” (INFJ) 2 times, and “Protagonist” (ENFJ) and “Mediator” (INFP) 1 time each.
I am LGBTQ+. I’m asexual, aro+panromantic flux, and while I feel like I’m genderfluid, the changes are very subtle and so I sometimes just go with agender, gendervoid, or neutrois. It’s a lot less complicated that way. I’m ambiamorous, and also pronoun apathetic!
I love whump. I’ve loved it for as long as I can remember but only found the whump community maybe 3(?) years ago.
I also love K-Pop, C-Pop, J-Pop, and Asian dramas, mainly K-Pop and K-Dramas, though.
I’m a HUGE multistan. ATEEZ, SKZ, TBZ, EXO, BTS, Red Velvet, SHINee, iKON, MONSTA X, TWICE, TO1, WANNA ONE, SuperM, X1, MIRAE, Ciipher, Golden Child, Purple Kiss, BAE173, SF9, IU, ONEUS, ONEWE, The Rose, PIXY, LUCY, STAYC, WEi (which I pronounced as “way” for an embarrassingly long time), Dreamcatcher, Brave Girls, TXT, ENHYPEN, SNSD, KARD, AKMU, SHAUN, Gaho, NCT, GHOST9, 1team, SE7EN, Cross Gene, D1ce, AB6IX, CRAVITY, BLACKPINK, CIX, VIXX, f(x), 4Minute, CLC, YEZI, B.I, Wonho, (G)I-DLE, EVERGLOW, SEVENTEEN, BROOKLYN, Ha Hyunsang, DAY6, GOT7, Teen Top, BAP, TREASURE, UNIQ, etc! It goes on, far longer than I can list. I am also very much against fanwars, they disgust me.
I’m also a HUGE animal lover, and a big softie. I can’t even squish insects. I don’t care that they can’t feel pain and don’t experience emotions, I just can’t bring myself to. I make it my mission to save any type of animal I come across. I find toads in our koi pond and immediately pick them out and take them to a safe place. I help turtles across the road. I got a mouse out of a puddle and revived it, releasing it when it was healthy enough. I saw a snail on a piece of wood that was going to be thrown on a fire and carefully pulled it off and put it somewhere else. So far I’ve found 5 stray cats (Piper, Toothless, Felix, Kai, and Kit Kat—all were found as skinny, sickly kittens) and took them in, raising them as my own. I rescued a chipmunk from certain death-by-cat. I’ve even saved a few baby raccoons, ducklings, lizards, spiders, and snakes in my time. And I’ll keep doing so for as long as I live.
I love writing, drawing/sketching, and painting, however I’m not confident that I’m good at any of those things, lmao. I mean, I don’t think I’m the worst, but my finished “works” often leave me unsatisfied with my “skills”. But of course, that won’t stop me from trying to improve!
I’m a maladaptive daydreamer. This can cause issues in some places while helping me out in others. On one hand, it makes doing chores and such kind of difficult. Like one time I had to take care of my dad’s pigeons while he was fixing our shed and one time he pointed out how slow I was with the chores. His words were something along the lines of, “I’m already almost done with what I have to do and you’re still working with the pigeons.” Also, it (and maybe ADHD if I do have it?) made school a nightmare for me. But it’s also helpful because then during church it’s really easy to keep myself occupied while the pastors go on about their Magical Sky Daddy™’s son throwing a tantrum and killing a figtree because it didn’t have any figs and how that story should “challenge” us or something.
The characters in my daydreams are weird, though. They merge and separate with each other to make different characters depending on the situation. Most of them don’t have definite genders. Only a handful of them have names because they’re always merging and separating like some kind of Shadow Clone Masters or something. Stuff like that.
One of my characters is for sure a demi-boy, though, and his name is Kyler.
I brought this up because I was watching The Andy Griffith Show and Andy was giving Opie a lecture on how many poor kids there are in the world and used the ratio “one and a half boys per square mile”. Opie then says that he’s “never seen a half a boy before”. Kyler just sort of pops into (fake) existence, jumps off the couch, and throws his arms in the air while saying, “Half a boy, right here!” I burst out laughing. Thankfully it didn’t seem weird, since my parents started laughing at Opie and thought that I was just laughing at it, too.
Any-who.
If I daydream while I’m standing, I’ll often pace and gesture with my arms while moving my lips. Sometimes I’ll even whisper. If I’m sitting down, I usually fidget a lot (such as pick at my shirt and rub my feet together), stare into space, and move my lips or whisper. My family sometimes ask me, “Why are you whispering?” Or, “What are you grinning about?” And I just shrug because I don’t know how to explain it to them without risking them calling someone to pray over me, lmao. I mean, I wasn’t even allowed to have imaginary friends because that was “evil”. When I was about 7, I told my parents about my imaginary unicorn friend and they gave me a lecture and “prayed over me”. It was embarrassing and awkward for me.
I’m suspicious that I might have ADHD, but don’t have the money to actually get a professional diagnosis. I’m also too scared to ask my parents about it.
Speaking of which, my family and I don’t see eye-to-eye. I mean, they don’t know it because I’m good at hiding it, and they think I agree with mostly everything they do but boy, is it a mess.
You see, they’re evangelical conservative Christians. “LGBTQ+ people are going to hell”, “ThE LeFt ARe eViL AnD ARe TrYiNg To BrAiNwAsh OuR ChiLdrEn”, “Trump was sent by God”, “Intersex is fake”, “Women must submit to men”, “You should get married no later than in a year or ‘the temptation’ to have sex might become too much”, the whole bit.
Meanwhile I’m over here with my (imaginary) pride flags, just existing as an agnostic leftist who wants everyone to have equal rights, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation, and would rather redo my horrifically atrocious kindergarten closing program role than pray to a god who (if they/he/she/it/whatever exists) gives cancer to kids and killed millions of innocent animals and people in the Bible.
But they have no idea that this is how I feel and now expect me to be baptized within the next month to show that I have “accepted Jesus Christ as my savior”. Yeah...that’s gonna be an awkward discussion...
Anyway, that’s just some things about me. Sorry that I got sidetracked a few times, lmao!
I look forward to posting more and maybe even making friends!
Thank you for reading (:

now i feel kinda guilty for throwing felix under the bus so quickly 💀🥲 honestly the thought of felix and bibi grouping together is thrilling to me.. i'm even growing more and more keen to the idea of candy being felix or smth, even tho that would mean he's lying about "his" art (hopefully in that case, he would have a valid reason for that because it's bugging me that "candy" says he loves that he's pursuing arts) or at least even tho shady, that he'll turn out to be a good character 👀 he's growing onto me, and that has me questioning my morals a little bit, i just feel like there is a huge possibility of some huge backstory from his side... and pLS stop making him look so mysterious, it's getting kinda hot 😂😳 (okay i need to stop i'm sorry i'll take myself out) and let me tell you that I LOVED that even tho y/n snitched on seungmin and hyunjin (deserved), that seungmin kinda stood up for her (?) in a sense... like that except hyunjin, they don't have history with her and he justified that thingy about jailtime and even before said that he actually pushed her buttons too much.. it was kinda sweet if you look at it from a certain angle. and i'm on my "💕🌸🥰 jisung agenda 💕🌸🥰" and forever will, he seems so pure and genuine, so pls don't stomp on my high hopes, i love this sweet boi. somebody hurt him and i'll hunt them down 🔪🙂 (jkjkjk) AND i feel like we're bunch of detectives throwing theories left and right 😂i'm mostly trying to catch up on the other asks / theories but it's getting kinda hard 😳 -🦄
jumping back on the felix train huh 🙈✨. and felix as candy(???) hm 🤔 maybe he does secretly have an eye for art who knows. it’ll be interesting to see felix’s character development yeah? he’s so unknown and unpredictable right now, hence why so many people are afraid of him 🤧. AND PLEASE UNI ANON 😭 THE RED FLAGS ARE WAVING AT YOU 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
we stan kim seungmin and his morals. wonpil was right, he DID raise the boys right 😤💓 (minus the drunk driving, selling weed, and probably other illegal stuff he’s mixed in, idk).
jisung is advocating for world peace rn, and yeah, everyone’s loving him, which is v v sweet 🤧. i’m glad i added him in.
fun fact: jisung wasn’t supposed to be in this fic, his character is supposed to just be filled by jake but i thought, why not? and i’m glad i did! so many people loved him, he’s the perfect balancer and refresher in comparison to the entire friend group 💀
and yes, i love reading all the theories!! it’s so interesting even though i feel like an evil bond villain doing a witch laugh whenever i read some of em bc i’m the only one who truly knows what’s going on HSHWJSHS. i’m honestly so excited to share my whole plot breakdown and writing process once everything is finished 💓
just go through #slc talks on the tags if you haven’t yet, just so you don’t have to scroll thru my entire account, cheers! 💓

Part two of my P5R review: Maruki
Let me start this by saying that I honestly really enjoy him as a villain. I really like the idea of villains who aren’t completely, clearly evil like Shido is. That being said, I think I disagree with a majority of people who think he’s good. First of all, while he does give therapy… or something similar to it, I’ll get back to that, it is very much self-serving. It’s made clear in his confidant that he’s mostly interested in his cognitive pscience research and since we know he has a persona before coming to Shujin, we can assume he only really took up the position of therapist to find out more about what exactly happened to Kamoshida.
About the therapist part, he’s a terrible one. And it’s not surprising since once again, he’s there to further his research and help these kids with the power of changing cognition, not therapy. I say this as someone who has studied the subject; he breaks a lot of ‘rules’ (I’m not speaking about written rules here, just things you shouldn’t do when you’re acting as a therapist).
First there’s Ren, who he himself points out doesn’t speak much but never follows up on that. Royal makes it painfully clear just how traumatised Ren is. We already know he has some memory loss of the incident because he doesn’t recognise Shido even when he’s standing right in front of him which is already a huge red flag that he is Not Okay, but there’s even small things like his hands shaking when he has to sign his name just to rent out a DVD. The fact that so many people point out how quiet Ren is, is telling too- he’s not just a silent protagonist, he’s traumatised because the last time he spoke up against something in the real world it landed him in jail. He puts on fake glasses to hide away from society as later confirmed by Ryuji and Akechi on separate occasions.
Yet… instead of helping Ren speak about his issues, about the possible abuse he may have gotten from Kamoshida since Maruki knew he got involved in that case, he immediately just talks about his own research, and his own problems. That’s a huge no-no for a therapist- you NEVER discuss your own issues; you do not put that burden on your patients but here’s Maruki doing just that with Ren. You could argue he’s also a bad therapist because of his whole plan of escapism as reality. Instead of helping patients move on from their grief or other issues, he reinforces them for the sake of their happiness. The job of therapy isn’t to make you happy, or at least, it’s meant to help you get to a place where you can deal with issues on your own which is the opposite of what Maruki is trying to do.
All in all that doesn’t make him a bad person, being bad at your job isn’t inherently evil, it just means you should probably pursue a different career path which is fine for him since he’s mostly a researcher anyway. The reason why I think he isn’t a completely good person either is because of what he ends up doing. A lot of people seem to think his intention of making everyone happy means his intentions are good so he’s a good person… but he’s doing this at the cost of free will, and also he starts of doing this for selfish reasons.
He wants to originally make it possible so that you can stop criminals from committing crimes by essentially controlling their thoughts, because of the trauma his fiancé suffered… but that kind of technology sounds fucking terrifying. Sure, he’s thinking of it as a ‘stopping a person from murdering people’ but could you imagine that kind of technology in the hands of someone like Shido? ‘Crimes’ wouldn’t just be something as cut and dry as murder, he could consider dissent against him as a crime and make people do as he wants… which in the end Maruki does to Ren. When you don’t complete his palace in time, Maruki doesn’t just let Ren live out his life in happiness, he knows Ren still opposes him so he makes him live in his own nightmare- becoming completely lethargic and never leaving his room, never interacting with anyone and just sleeping away his days. We only know he does this to Ren, who’s to say he won’t do this to other people? Or worse?
Throughout Maruki’s palace we see just how little he cares about free will. In his assessments in the palace, people are assessed to determine how to make them happy, and one wrong answer that points to them being unhappy is the idea that pursuing your dream, even if it’s not working out, is bad. Maruki doesn’t believe in working hard towards your dream, only in doing what makes you happy. In his world, society would stagnate because there would be no reason to improve in his view, and improvement takes mistakes, trial and error, which lead to unhappiness. Except even if you’re fine with that… Maruki isn’t an omnipotent god. He can’t stop floods, global warming, earthquakes and generally natural disasters, only people’s feelings about them. But in his world no one would work to possible find solutions to help with that cos again, that means working on things you might fail at.
Playing through it, it took me a little more time to realise just why Akechi was so horrified by this world. I assume then he immediately realised the consequences I listed off, because yeah, a world where you can only do what someone else dictates makes you happy is horrifying. Maruki just isn’t a good guy. He’s not evil like Shido, but it is a different kind of evil, even when he’s got some good intentions. We’re just used to seeing something so obviously evil like Shido or Kamoshida but I still believe this is a different kind of evil. The second he thinks he can play god like that is the moment I realised he just can’t be listed off as a good guy the same way the Phantom Thieves are. It’s the reason why they oppose him in the first place, to the point that even Akechi, someone who used to have no interest in anything but beating Shido (and to an extent, having a rivalry with Ren) is the advocate for reason within this world and beating what he considers to be a bigger threat to them then Shido ever was.
That being said, Maruki does serve as an excellent villain to the Thieves. He’s not an outright criminal because there aren’t exactly laws in place saying you can’t become a god, he’s close to all of them because he was the guy they went to to speak about their greatest concerns making it that much harder to fight him. On top of that, he doesn’t hate the Thieves, he’s not opposed to them personally, and if anything is quite supportive of their actions, to the point that he himself wants Ren to see the world he’s created and lets them roam his palace without trying to personally stop them (The shadows do try to fight you still yeah but in this sense Maruki’s conflicted, he wants them to realise by themselves that his world is better but also doesn’t want them to stop his plans either).
Moreover he fits the themes of persona 5 so well and as another counterpoint- he too rebelled against society and awakened to his persona but it only led to him wishing to impose a different kind of oppressive rule that took away people’s free will.
As a character too, I love him, I think he’s a really, really good and interesting character and I honestly can’t wait to play NG+ and look at all of the stuff he says to you in detail because I honestly think he’s a great villain for the Thieves to fight in term 3.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You were reeling. You didn’t know if you were more furious or hurt. After everything, after the last few weeks, therapy, the revelations, the openness between you, your tears, and struggle this was where you were. Lost. Confused.
After sitting in your office or almost an hour after the end of your FaceTime call with Chris examining the screen record of Chris’ background and the one from Ana’s picture you’d gone through every single scenario. You’d even branched out to scenarios of those scenarios and at the end of it all you’d settled on was something wasn’t right. Everything pointed to your husband being a liar, your husband playing both angles when in fact he as a low-down dirty asshole. You were reluctant to believe it especially with all you’d been through together in therapy. The emotions he’d expressed couldn’t have been faked. Only an actual sociopathic psychopath could have faked it. that possibility had you wondering if your husband was a sociopathic psychopath.
This new light on the situation didn’t help you keep focus for the day. Concentration was pointless, working was pointless. Every couple of minutes you were thinking about it again. wondering where they were right now if they were together if they were laughing together about how easy it all had been. Needless to say, you were now looking at “platonic” actions in a whole new light. You now looked at the video of them together at TIFF differently, you looked at the interviews they did together and the body language differently. You even looked at the times they’d been together when you called him while he was filming. Your insecurities were at an all-time high.
Those insecurities are what had you on a private jet bound for San Diego, two days before your scheduled trip to LA that was supposed to have you meet up with Chris. You’d followed your gut, insecurities, and fears here because you had a feeling something was up, and you refused to sit around and ignore it any longer. You’d played the dutiful wife, the wife who played the trust card. You’d played the faithful and devoted wife who did everything in her power to save and strengthen her marriage. It was time to play a different card, the stealth wife. You were going to get to the bottom of this one way or another.
“Hello?”
“I hope you’re not just going to roll over on this one.” Your mother’s voice resonated and you sighed out in the backseat of the chauffeured truck.
“Mama, for goodness sake,” you began before she cut you off.
“What would be for goodness’s sake is you putting both of them in their place, especially her. A man can be as faithful as Jesus but there will always be snakes and Jezebels slithering through the garden of Eden.”
You rolled your eyes. You didn’t have the time or patience to listen to her scripture riddles. “Mama, I don’t have time for this.”
“Do you have time for a divorce?” You almost fell out. She had the uncanny ability to take it from zero to two hundred in two seconds. This was not different. Still, she had a point.
“I will take care of it. I’m in San Diego now and I’m going to confront Chris.”
“Take a beat, I say confront her first.”
“What?”
“Yes, both parties are equally complicit but sit with her, get a feel for her. You’ll be able to tell her intentions within the first two minutes. I’m not saying go and beat her ass off the bat. It’s what I would do, but there are ways to be tactful in a situation like this,” she suggested.
You had thought to go to her and rip out her hair then give her a nice souvenir in the form of a face scar to be used as a reminder to stay away from your husband. You’d also thought to play devil’s advocate and go behind enemy lines and assess the situation from her side. You’d left both options open and decided to go to the horse first. Hearing your mother’s thoughts, you decided to go with her plan. You’d go see the snake, Jezebel, first.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Almost an hour later, you were sitting in a hotel room in front of a set table with an assortment of foods before you. Your mind was racing but you felt strangely calm as if you were slowly gliding through the air in zero gravity. It would have been peaceful, but your heart felt heavy.
“Uriah?” Her accent was very clear. You also heard her shock and confusion. When you turned to her she had a smile on her face. She was a pretty woman. There was no lying about it. You could see why men would fall for her and her big hazel eyes, striking bone structure, plump bottom lip, and exotic accent. Thinking about that you saw what would draw him in.
You smiled widely and stood. “Ana. How are you?” She returned your smile and stepped to you with her arms out. Once before you, she threw her arms around you hugging you. It was unexpected and your first red flag.
“I’m so good. How are you? Oh my goodness I love this outfit you look amazing.” She was being overly friendly. This was a sign she was overcompensating for something. You played her game and carried in with small talk.
After a few minutes, the two of you sat down across from each other. “Chris didn’t mention you were here.”
“I know. He doesn’t know. I wanted it to be a surprise. So please don’t tell him.”
“Oh, that’s so sweet—so romantic.” Her smile slipped for a moment. You didn’t miss it. She smiled again and straightened her back coming back to being the picture of friendliness.
“I wanted to have a bit of lunch together just us girls. It’s been such a long time since we chatted. I just wanted to catch up.” You knew it was believable. You were not an amateur actress.
“That sounds nice.”
“I remember a few things Chris mentioned that you liked. Cucumber sandwiches, dragon rolls, and that salsa from your country that you said you couldn’t live without. I hope it’s the right brand.”
Ana’s eyes roamed over the food on the table with a huge smile on her face. “Wow, he told you about all this?”
You nodded and sipped your tea, “He did. He talks about you a lot. I can see he likes you.” Ana looked at you and studied you as if she were searching for something. You suspected what she was searching for. You kept your cool.
“Yeah, we’re good friends. He’s a great man. You married a keeper.” You slowly nodded and took up one of the California Rolls before you. It was one of the two sushi products you would touch. From your example, Ana did the same and made a plate with a little of everything.
The two of you ate in silence for a few minutes. After some quiet, you chatted about the business, upcoming projects, silly stories floating around Hollywood, fashion, makeup, and travel. It all seemed normal. If you didn’t have the fact in the back of your mind that she was fucking your husband then it was possible to become friends. In another life, the two of you may have become friends. You may have been good friends.
As you spoke about trivial things, you formulated the right path to go. You couldn’t be too direct, and you couldn’t be too passive. You had to find a way to ride the line between the two.
“I hope everything is okay with your family. I heard the break Chris took was because of a family emergency,” Ana led a little over an hour into brunch.
“Yes, it was. We went through some things that had the power to break us. It was important we took the time. I wasn’t sure we still felt the same way about each other anymore.” It was true. Sometimes you had to reveal something personal to open the gates. Ana’s hand reached out for yours and rested on top in a reassuring way.
“I’m sorry. I had no idea. Do you want to talk about it?”
“No, no need. I want to distract myself. How are things with you? Anyone in your life that makes this crazy life of fame better?”
She remained quiet for a little while then toyed with the straw in her Fiji water bottle. Her eyes didn’t go back to yours though. “Things are okay. They could definitely be better. I never realized how much fame could be so lonely. You have millions of people watching you all the time. Tens of them around you but still you can feel--.”
“Alone?”
Ana looked to you and nodded with a melancholic smile. “Yeah. I don’t expect you to understand. You have Chris.”
“He’s been pulling away for some time. It may just be our workload and our maybe we’re not the same people anymore. We might have outgrown each other. I understand.” It was a stretch but in the light of new details maybe it wasn’t. Ana watched you and you tapped into your actress side and played up everything you felt a little over two months ago.
“Oh Uriah, I’m sorry. Do you think--.” Ana paused looked down timidly then bit her bottom lip before she spoke again. “Do you think he’s having an affair?”
Bingo, you thought. Nothing you’d said since this brunch began had any path to eluding about an affair. The fact that she brought it up was suspicious. “Do you think he is? You’re with him a lot more than I am these days.”
Ana looked at you. you felt the air in the room change, her eyes got slightly darker. “How would I know that?”
You shrugged and took up a beignet. You loved that the powdered sugar just melted in your mouth.
“Wait, are you insinuating I’m having an affair with Chris?”
“I never said that Ana. Why would I even say that?”
Ana straightened her sitting position and held her head higher. You knew what was coming and you loathed it. Either you’d slipped somewhere, or she was seriously on edge about the topic.
“Oh, I see. You asked me here under false pretenses to play nice and sugar me up hoping to get me to spill something. You told me some sad story about your marriage hoping it would give you the optic of the sad victim so I could feel sorry for you. Wow. These questions weren’t you being a friend or a decent person. You were trying to find out of I’m having an affair with Chris. I can’t believe this!” She sprang to her feet and walked away from the table.
“You’re overreacting, Ana. I never accused you of anything. All I wanted to do was catch up with you.”
“Bullshit!” She rolled her eyes, turned her back to you then looked at you again.
“By you coming to me like this it shows how scared you are. Do you feel threatened by me, Uriah? Worried that Chris likes me more than you? Scared that our connection is better than yours?” She was trying to get to you, you could tell. You refused to play this game.
“Look, Ana, I’m not here to play games with you.”
“No, you’re here to see how much of a threat I am for your marriage. What you should be thinking about is do you actually have a marriage still?” She didn’t give you a chance to reply before she walked out the door slamming it behind her.
“This bitch!” She just moved her next chess piece—the knight.
~~~~~~~~
When you got to Chris’ room that evening you were even angrier than you were at brunch with Ana. You should have thrown her out the fucking window instead of playing nice with her. Yes, a tactical approach was the best but a show of dominance and violence was always a good move. You hadn’t made one misstep. You didn’t take the con too far, you weren’t too passive or direct. She had always been on edge. She probably was suspicious from the moment she walked in. You knew better than anyone a guilty conscience would always see a threat even where there was none. You were a threat though. You knew now she wasn’t as innocent as she pretended to be. That made you wonder just what the fuck was going on.
According to Chris’ assistant, he was busy doing some last-minute interviews and events for Knives Out. You took advantage of the quiet and time alone by thoroughly scanning his room, especially where the backgrounds of his facetime call and her image looked identical. There was no mistaking it in person. They were the same. After you roamed around the room wondering just what the walls would say if they could talk. Would they tell you all their sorted secrets about your husband and a particularly hazel-eyed co-star? Would they speak of his fidelity and boringness or would they speak about his betrayal?
When you’d thought yourself weary, you moved on to ways to relax which included taking a long bath and feasting on room service. It was a good distraction but that was all it was—a distraction. One that you knew would end as soon as Chris got back. You would have to address the literal elephant in the room the picture.
You were so distracted by the view from the living room window and your tumultuous thoughts and feelings that you almost didn’t hear when the door opened, and Chris walked in.
“Uriah.” You looked to see him standing there dressed in perfect business casual wear with his hair perfectly tousled. You would never think he was unattractive. For a few moments, his eyes left your face and roamed over your robe-clad body and down your exposed leg. As he scanned you, he walked more into the room.
“Hi.”
“You’re not supposed to be here in San Diego. I thought we were meeting in LA.
“I know, I just—wanted to be here.”
Chris sighed and sat in a seat across from you. you found it a little strange that he hadn’t seen you in a week and he hadn’t come over to greet you or initiate contact. As you were going to bring it up, Chris began speaking again.
“Checking up on me?” His words rubbed you the wrong way. Turning around to face him you crossed your legs not caring that they were fully exposed.
“Should I be checking on you? I wasn’t aware you needed checking up on.”
He kept eye contact with you. You could see the tight clench in his jaw and the straight line of his lips. He was annoyed.
“Did you lure Ana to lunch and accuse her of having an affair with me?”
Closing your eyes, you sighed and cracked your neck. You’d just jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire. The bitch had tattled and moved her second chess piece at the same time.
“Don’t lie to me Uriah,” Chris warned through tightly clenched jaws.
“I did not accuse her of anything.”
“So, you did lure her to lunch and treated her like a homewrecker and threatened my career and name in the industry?”
“Are you kidding me, Chris?”
“Are you kidding me, Uriah?!” He sprang to his feet like a firework shell shooting into the air. You could feel the anger coming off of him.
“I cannot believe you would do this! Why would you do this?”
“Me? Why would I do this? Why would you do this?”
“What are you talking about? What have I done Uriah?” You got off the couch and made your way to your purse for your phone. If he wanted to play the fool you would enlighten him. once you found the picture you shoved it in his face.
“What the fuck is that?” You watched him as he scanned the post then rolled his eyes.
“It’s a post.”
“No shit it’s a post. Did you send her that sweater?”
“So what? I wasn’t going to wear it, she liked it so I gave it away.”
“And this?” You pointed to the background of the picture and then went to the still of his facetime call.
“What about this? Why does your background which is here, identically match hers?”
Chris looked at you like you were bat shit crazy as if he had no idea who you were.
“Don’t look at me like I’m crazy. What the fuck is this?”
He didn’t speak, he just stared at you.
“I’ve suppressed the urge to ask the question because of everything we’ve been through these last months but come on Chris. I can only be so complacent.”
“Ask the question, Uriah. I dare you.” It was another warning. You flared your nose and hesitated. You knew if you asked it you’d be right back where you were before therapy. The hurt on his face was evident. He looked as if he were holding back tears.
“Ask it!”
“Why do your backgrounds match?”
“They are hotel rooms, I’m sure they are all identical.”
“Bullshit!” You walked away from him and to the window.
“Did you come here to confront her--to confront me?” You clenched your jaw and fought back your tears.
“I wanted to see where your head was and the opportunity arose to see where hers was too,” you explained.
“Satisfied? Was her denial enough?”
“She didn’t deny anything. She threw her cockiness around instead. Did she tell you that when she came running to you to get sympathy and create an even bigger wedge between us?”
“This isn’t about her Uriah. This is about you. I thought you trusted me. I thought we’d moved past this and had turned a page and were moving forward. I thought we were stronger.”
“I thought so too. I really tried not to come here with this. I debated it but Chris how can I look past this? If you were me, what would you have done?”
“I wouldn’t come here accusing you or your costar or fucking!”
“For the first half of our marriage you accused me of fucking Christiano! I just need you to explain this to me.”
“I have nothing to explain. This wasn’t my room. She wasn’t here.”
“So, she wasn’t in here dressed like that with you? You weren’t fucking her before this was taken?”
He didn’t speak right away. He looked disappointed. He sighed and walked away facing his back to you.
“I don’t think we’ll ever get past this. The last two months were a waste of time. I thought we could move forward and be stronger because of the pain and the struggle but I don’t think we can.” He turned back to you in time for you to see a tear roll down his cheek.
“I never lied to you. I’m not playing you either. That picture was not taken here. She’s never been in here.” He dropped his head and wiped his tears away. “I don’t think I should be here either.”
He didn’t give you enough time to speak, he just walked out the door leaving you alone. You didn’t know what to think or believe at this point. You knew you weren’t crazy. You also knew that this bitch had shown her full hand.
Why I Choose Bitcoin Cash
Why I Choose Bitcoin Cash
I prefer a Peer to see digital money over the whole lot. Correct now the first-class form of this comes in the form of Bitcoin cash, which holds the ticker BCH on virtually all exchanges. My title is Collin Enstad, i’ve lived in the USA my entire lifestyles. I am a freelance director / cinematographer / steadicam operator. I first heard about Bitcoin in 2013 in the course of its bubble, the place it peaked at $1200. I consider my first purchase was once around $one hundred fifty however I only bought a bit bit, as much as I might find the money for being a broke school pupil. I made some cash and purchased matters with it, like this bizarre digicam rig. Of course part of the adoption of bitcoin is brought about via men and women speculating trying to generate income off of it. But i noticed I had actual utility, I could use it as money. An investment that’s liquid as hell. Excellent. I requested an harmless query in late 2015 on the uncensored bitcoin subreddit, /r/btc: ELI5: Why achieve this many individuals insist on a small block size?. I got first-rate answers, similar to Blockstreams function in taking up the progress, how Peter Todd remains to be seeking to these days to kill 0-affirmation transactions, and how the Core devs have been proscribing the bottom layer to push a 2nd one that they claimed would be even higher than the actual blockchain.All of these aspects nonetheless maintain proper to nowadays. I even respect a number of the names within the thread from again then with persons I still speak to in these days. I even had some put up calling out theymos, the king of censorship, round this time. How things have no longer transformed. The extra I dig up the more obvious the manipulation of public opinion. Once more, this was once in 2015 this was all being called out, 4 years ago. Thats close to 1/2 of bitcoins lifetime. Crypto is really just politics, but on a time scale which appears hundreds and hundreds of times faster.I was once continuously a huge blocker. 1MB is tiny. Its less knowledge than a 2d of this video. It gave the impression a majority of the community back in 2015 was once for bigger blocks too. How a small crew of Core developers took over and sabotaged the bitcoin experiment with never-ending small blocks will be rather the exciting case be taught in historical past class. Im nonetheless seeking to utterly wrap my head around how Gavin, the character Satoshi entrusted with the keys to the bitcoin code, used to be pushed out and ostracized for looking the logical answer, higher blocks.Its a narrative that takes a long time to tell, and entails a false Satoshi. Im currently engaged on a feature size documentary about the shitshow that’s bitcoins history. The real down and dirty bitcoin politics, no longer some loud mouth troll showing up on tv spouting nonsense. So the fork happened in August 2017 and the large block version, Bitcoin cash, didn’t win over the hearts and minds of traders. Instantaneous ridicule from the Core persons ensued, as used to be par for the path. Bcash is trash was once their mantra, in an try to rip the word bitcoin out of its name. Now take into account, theymos fairly ramped up his censorship on /r/bitcoin in 2015. Reddit used to be THE spot to talk bitcoin, and theymos actions make him, individually, the only greatest affect on this whole Scaling warfare. Go to any publish from again then about theymos increasing moderation and appear at how many individuals vehemently adverse it.One of bitcoins most important residences is censorship-resistance, however apparently whenever you go away the protocol layer you additionally abandon all of its ethos. When your methods hotel to silencing the opposition you understand your arguments aren’t on stable floor. If they were, they might let all of the dissent come their approach and evaporate before them in the face of truth. However no. The block and ban buttons are used as a type of religious piety. This itself was once a tremendous red flag that some thing used to be wrong with Bitcoin. As a latest concrete instance of manipulation, My ultra-modern video criticizing the lightning community was once the top put up on /r/btc, except every week historic news story broke in regards to the Twitter CEO, Jack, purchasing a hardware pockets all of a sudden unseated it. This Jack story was once in a antagonistic sub and it won the highest spot in an hour. Mods deleted the submit shortly after. The account had a history of vote botting. Proof Of Social Media. Par for the course for those against peer to peer money. And this this is the place I just get angry.BTC does no longer work as a trustworthy form of money, but its still pushed on unsuspecting noobs, many who now go to the bcash sunday service. These social media influencers have 10s of hundreds of thousands of followers that they preach the nice word to absolutely this many folks wouldnt listen to any person who was just basically unsuitable! This market is immature and albeit, just dumb. I really awoke to all of this when instantly I was paying $1 for a transaction rate in early 2017. This isn’t what I signed up for. My money will have to not disappear every time I need to move it. When Bitcoin cash forked, I was all in, actually with my nonetheless tiny stash and figuratively from an ideological standpoint. Does this provide me investment bias? Almost always, however again, Im now not talking tremendous cash right here.Irregardless, I do my research and its the one coin i can confidently put my cash in. I do know what it is trying to do is the reason bitcoin was created in the first place, which is what once more? Oh yeah, to offer each person in the world an possibility to be their own bank. To give humans the potential to transact with anyone in the world with out the necessity of a 3rd celebration, even if they make not up to $2 a day. That is bitcoin. I kept diving deeper into the rabbit hole. Undoubtedly each person couldnt be this deluded however they were. Advocating for the shrewd factor of raising the blocksize and how BCH is a reliable variation of Bitcoin on social media has been tiring. I dont know the way a few of these trolls are so lively and simply hostile.I grew up with the web, part of the primary iteration that had social media for his or her whole middle and excessive institution experience. However these bitcoin guys man, the most poisonous i have ever seen. You have to have thick epidermis when you even believe about having impartial idea in crypto. Its sad. I haven’t any doubt there are individuals whose full-time job it is to sow up disagreement and strife within people who want to see Bitcoin be the arena money. Theres even proof of In November of 2017 I made a industrial for BCH with the support of the Bitcoin money association. It used to be a excessive high-quality industrial in a barber store which showed bitcoin getting used as cash. Response from the group was once nice, and i located myself in Tokyo a pair months later shooting the Satoshis vision convention, where a few of the Bitcoin cash group attended.I interviewed lots of the prime leaders in BCH for the period of that point interval for my documentary together with Craig Wright. This man appeared to come out of nowhere and was once a large suggest of Bitcoin cash. He had charisma, unquestionably, even when his Satoshi claims have been iffy. I consider the BCH neighborhood sided with him on account that he was once so anti-core. An enemy of an enemy is your buddy. And on the grounds that this buddy was very aggressive and outspoken in the direction of the purpose, many were inclined to let his shadiness slide.However very quickly after this convention actual bitcoin devs, who in reality work on and comprehend the bitcoin protocol, began calling him out on his lies. It was once rough to confess youd been duped, but right here we all are. Then, of direction he forked off into his possess coin months later, and his fraud lives on. Then comes the altcoin arguments. For those who dont like BTC so much simply use nano? Dash is the real peer to see cash! Lol noob do you even cardano? Well, considering BCH has the identical transaction historical past relationship again to the genesis block in 2009, one could argue the distribution of the coin is more decentralized than any of the altcoins, due to the fact that it has been around the longest.Im a strong believer in Proof of work as well. Even though BCH has a lot less hashpower than BTC, it has been shown how a gigantic portion of hash would transfer to BCH in safeguard of a malicious actor, like we noticed within the hashwar. The miners like Bitcoin money, however they generally follow gains, and this means mining BTC and BCH on the same price as the fee ratio between them. Now that BCH is free from its former crippled blocksize, most things the altcoins can do, BCH would enforce itself. Even things just like the lightning community would work muchhhh higher on Bitcoin cash as a result of the small charges to open and shut channels. Bitcoin was once intended to be the one crypto that ruled all of them, absorbing the quality altcoin facets. Vitalik Buterin found out this was no longer the case to any extent further, and he ran off to make Ethereum in 2015 after a lot combating with the Core devs. So right here I to find myself, in March 2019, nonetheless a supporter of Bitcoin cash. That you may believe the creative and grassroots power of individuals who just wish to construct. I hear the Bitcoin OGs say its the same spirit that bitcoin had it in its early days.Persons that CARE about making bitcoin exceptional again. And of path, the small blocks made building apps problematic for devs, because the excessive charges and sluggish confirmations might disable some functions who relied on inexpensive and speedy transactions. Full blocks rationale unreliability. And if youre a dev and need to construct an app, why within the hell would you use a base protocol that can instantly price $50 for a single use. If BCH stops being the excellent type of P2P money, make no mistake, i’d drop aid. Im no longer a blind follower and am at all times watching to mission my beliefs. Tokens, Decentralized handles, Badger wallet, suggestions.Cash, CashShuffle, Satoshidice the record goes on. So many of those projects are simply now hitting the Bitcoin cash market, and wallets are looking to catch up and implement these elements as speedy as they may be able to.Its nonetheless early in Bitcoin Cashs development existence, and the power within the community is the equal one I felt once I first received into it, vibrant, filled with hope for a greater future, and now with an added tenacity to make certain that no dangerous actors can once once more spoil the imaginative and prescient of Peer to look cash for the complete world. .
The miners like Bitcoin money, however they generally follow gains, and this means mining BTC and BCH on the same price as the fee ratio between them. Now that BCH is free from its former crippled blocksize, most things the altcoins can do, BCH would enforce itself. Even things just like the lightning community would work muchhhh higher on Bitcoin cash as a result of the small charges to open and shut channels. Bitcoin was once intended to be the one crypto that ruled all of them, absorbing the quality altcoin facets. Vitalik Buterin found out this was no longer the case to any extent further, and he ran off to make Ethereum in 2015 after a lot combating with the Core devs. So right here I to find myself, in March 2019, nonetheless a supporter of Bitcoin cash. That you may believe the creative and grassroots power of individuals who just wish to construct. I hear the Bitcoin OGs say its the same spirit that bitcoin had it in its early days.Persons that CARE about making bitcoin exceptional again. And of path, the small blocks made building apps problematic for devs, because the excessive charges and sluggish confirmations might disable some functions who relied on inexpensive and speedy transactions. Full blocks rationale unreliability. And if youre a dev and need to construct an app, why within the hell would you use a base protocol that can instantly price $50 for a single use. If BCH stops being the excellent type of P2P money, make no mistake, i’d drop aid. Im no longer a blind follower and am at all times watching to mission my beliefs. Tokens, Decentralized handles, Badger wallet, suggestions.Cash, CashShuffle, Satoshidice the record goes on. So many of those projects are simply now hitting the Bitcoin cash market, and wallets are looking to catch up and implement these elements as speedy as they may be able to.Its nonetheless early in Bitcoin Cashs development existence, and the power within the community is the equal one I felt once I first received into it, vibrant, filled with hope for a greater future, and now with an added tenacity to make certain that no dangerous actors can once once more spoil the imaginative and prescient of Peer to look cash for the complete world. .
hi different anon here I get what you're saying about the whole thing about say someone's favorite color was lavender they'd have it at their wedding and their m/f relationship that's not really doing any harm that's just someone's favorite colour but I think here the difference it's not someone with no influence doing it it's taylor swift it's a song and swifities joke all the time about oh she owns red she owns 22 she owns this she owns that and even when maroon was announced there were joke she owns maroon too and when we hear the song I feel like there will be a lot of people saying she owns lavender and its not about gatekeeping a color it's about being allowed to share the history behind it without getting dismissed and if the song is a love song there's gonna be lots of people captioning things with in the lavender haze (which other than mad men and urban dictionary I can't find sources off it being a 1950s saying but there's countless sources about lavender and the queer history of it) (also I take taylors words at face value she is straight in a heterosexual relationship of 6 years she heard the phrase on mad men and she also has a history of not being well researched in a lot of things aka wtcs and amsterdam just this year I definitely do not expect her to know queer history even with her being an ally and being an advocate since even queer people themselves don't know half their own history which is a whole other thing and sucks) but say we never ever had a such thing as gaylor discourse and taylor announced lavender haze and made that reel I think there still would be people rightfully upset at her and her fanbase using the word lavender to describe heterosexual love because there will be a lot of people who are heterosexual and using lavender from her lyrics as symbolism of themselves being in love and colors being used as symbolism is a huge thing for the LGBT+ community each color of the rainbow symbolises something each label has their own specific pride flag colours that have specific symbolism and of all the colors that mean the most and have the most queer history it's lavender so when someone is saying that this could be harmful for queer history I don't think that's a statement that's wrong because it could be and we'll realise how after the song comes out but because of gaylor discourse people are going out of their way to constantly say it's just a color and dismiss other people's concerns I think yeah it's fine to defend taylor against gaylor discourse but people need to stop letting it cloud their minds and end up spreading harmful rhetoric like the only statement needed against gaylor discourse is taylors own words "I can advocate on a community I'm not apart of" but some people go out their way to give all sorts of other reasons to defend she's straight by saying "oh taylors only dated men so she can't possible be..." but there's no need for this comment because take taylors name away and the generalised statement then becomes "she can't be bi or she can't be lesbian because she's only dated men" which is harmful rhetoric that could be seen by people who are questioning and it's a harmful belief to have in yourself especially if you are wanting to be an ally to the community I think the lavender discourse is going the same way where in defending taylor from gaylors swifties are just outright not listening to legit concerns and are not even willing to try to understand and educate themselves in queer history of lavender because if something good is to come from discourse it should be the spread of this information sorry for the rant this is just my perspective I've seen a lot of "it's just a color" comments by people outside and in the community and it's very annoying seeing that because never has a color just been a color in the community and in our history
i just feel like some of this is terminally online discourse? i've seen people say they heard their grandparents use the phrase, like a honeymoon phase (someone dug up this excerpt from an old newspaper: https://href.li/?https://twitter.com/callitwhatuwnto/status/1579241430949965825?s=46&t=lKc_ZS_xuOA9JBoI7wOOog), i've also seen many many queer people with no knowledge of the history at all and surprised by this, it's all dependent on what you've been exposed to. you're definitely allowed to be annoyed (i agree with you that amsterdam was a huge mistake by everyone involved and deserves no attention), but this particular battle isn't getting anyone anywhere, it's only causing rampant toxicity and people being awful to each other, or ascribing the worst, most malicious intent to her (comparing her to putin???). the rampant biphobia and aphobia happening is a mess, but that's on the people perpetuating it. she's an ally, but that doesn't mean she's perfect. none of us are. learning the history is good and valuable, saying she's homophobic and intentionally queerbaiting or being oppressive is not it. she's also not responsible for the stupid things swifties do online and can't control that. i don't expect musicians to know everything, and only we can control how we respond and treat one another and artistic intent, and if we want to educate each other, it's better to do that positively, instead of this engagement in personal attacks and projection. she simply heard a pretty phrase and decided to use it in her art.
Who should I vote for in the WA state election?
Full disclosure, this is directly inspired by this article, by someone from my high school as part of a youth newspaper he was working on. Considering said newspaper hasn’t updated since, oh, 2017, I think it’s fine to step on a few toes.
According to the ABC there are 19 parties vying for votes in the 2021 Western Australia State Election, which is coming up on Saturday. Some of them are good, some of them are very very not. Let’s go through each!
Animal Justice Party
The Animal Justice Party is a single-platform party masquerading as a multi-platform party, and while they have bland but reasonable positions on common issues everything, and I mean everything, on their page circles back to animals. Mental Health? Animal therapy and volunteering are good for that! Foreign Policy? We only care about trophies and wildlife trade! Domestic Violence? Abusers kick puppies, not just spouses! You get the idea. They mean well, but I don’t think they’re even close to a top pick, especially considering some of their odder platforms (banning processed meat sales to minors like they’re cigarettes, sure ok).
Vote for them if you’re the epitome of the obnoxious vegan.
Australian Christians
I mean, obviously I’m not religious, but I’m pretty sure these folks don’t speak for all Christians. They’re first on the list of whackjobs, anti-abortion and same-sex marriage, pro “sexual morality” (read: puritanism) and have out-of-context bible quotes on their statement of intents. Oh, sorry, statement of beliefs. Clicking on this webpage made my skin crawl- protip, if a person or party claims to support “family values” or “Christian ideals” 99 times out of 100 they’re just using it to justify bigotry.
Vote for them if you’d feel right at home in Cromwellian England.
Daylight Savings Party
This one’s website was broken for me, so I couldn’t really get a hold of anything beyond the name and what was on their facebook page, which is pretty much just what their mission statement is- Western Australia but we have daylight savings time. Despite being ridiculously sunny all the time. But….but why though….
Vote for them if you enjoy changing your clocks twice a year, like a weirdo.
The Great Australian Party
There are two really obvious jokes here screaming at me to be made. The GAP wants to make Australia great again, and despite the name it doesn’t involve jeans. These guys think taxes are bad but it would be good if they were instead handled by corporations, which is the most laughably stupid idea that itd be enough to bottom-vote them just on that- fortunately, their stance on firearms (we’ll get to it later) and immigration (withdrawing from UN treaties, seriously?) make it pretty clear they’re just a bunch of cunts. Their policy pages complain about political correctness and want to make fucking with a flag a crime like it is in the US, so the comparisons to a certain US party keep going.
Vote for them if you’re the proud owner of a red hat that your children will burn out of shame.
Health Australia Party
The fact that these people have an entire page dedicated to going “no, we aren’t anti-vax, we just have a lot of concerns” answers any questions you could possibly have. They also advocate for “natural medicine” to be placed on equal footing with, you know, medicine, which is obviously not a great idea.
Also, that they spell it “anti-vacc” and that their policy list is in fucking Calibri bugs me to no end.
Vote for them if you’re on a lemon detox.
Legalise Cannabis Western Australia
Take a guess. Take a wild fucking guess what single issue these guys are about. I don’t even have anything against this idea, their policies aren’t awful or anything, but it’s a heck of a hill to spend so much of your time on.
Vote for them if you’re high off your tits, I guess.
Liberal Democrats
What is this, libertarians? I’ll be frank, most of their policies are rooted in economics stuff I don’t really understand, but they’re against COVID lockdowns. You know, despite how effective they’re shown to be around here since we don’t fuck them up (mostly).
These guys seem to be one of the bigger of the small parties but their website is super unhelpful so ???
Vote for them if… I dunno?
Liberal Party
The first of the two major parties. They lost power in the last state election, and I couldn’t be more thankful- they’d been doing nothing but cock up for years at that point, and the premier was a fucking joke. Considering that their leader has apparently already conceded defeat, I suspect they aren’t looking to repeat the process.
The Liberals seem to be the default for a lot of people, thanks to their incalculable media bias and being one of the big two. I suppose if you’re reading this, you aren’t voting for them anyway.
Vote for them if your mum voted for them and you’re proud of that for some reason.
Liberals for Climate
If you voted in the last election, you might remember a party called the Flux network, which was a party where their policy was just online voting for everything. This is, uh them again? But they seem more concerned about climate than last time.
Vote for them if you haven’t watched this video.
No Mandatory Vaccination Party
…no. just no.
Antivaccination is an opinion that makes my skin crawl. The fucker that effectively started the movement, Andrew Wakefield, effectively did so for the money, and as such is indirectly responsible for thousands of deaths. The people who believe this shit know nothing of chemistry or medicine but hear a few buzzwords and do a google or two and think they’re the greatest geniuses of our time. They think they’re soooo fucking smart. Confident incorrectness can be funny at times, but not when such a huge issue is at stake.
Vote for them if you want me to call you out on twitter dot com.
Pauline Hanson’s One Nation
Oh christ she’s still trying this shit? For reference, in the last election these xenophobic cunts were rightfully punted out of our state, despite massive campaigning, proving that we aren’t the bogan capital of the country quite as much. Their policy pages make me want to vomit, but who the fuck voting for One Nation reads the fucking policy page?
Pauline Hanson was a fish and chip shop owner who made a political party to get her xenophobic bullshit out on the national stage, and was arrested for election fraud, yet still is allowed to run a party for some reason. She’s switched the target of her ire from China to the Middle East to reflect modern bigotry better, but it’s the same old shit. The only good thing ever to come about her was the Pauline Pantsdown song, and she obviously wasn’t involved in that.
Vote for them if you’re interested in joining the Proud Boys.
Shooters Fishers and Farmers
Oh and the hits just keep coming. Funnily enough I don’t have an issue with their fishery policy, but that’s not the main one, obviously. Australia has harsh gun control laws on account of a mass shooting back in 1997, and we’ve stayed that way for 23 years with, shockingly, no further mass shootings (that I’m aware of). You can disguise your policy by saying its for the sport all you want, but I’ve got no interest in bringing guns back to WA.
Vote for them if you think the NRA having massive political sway in the USA is a good thing.
Socialist Alliance
Full disclosure, I consider myself a socialist, so I’m probably a little biased here. But yeah, these look like good policies. They want to remove the USA military presence in Australia which I am personally very for, they support royal commission into the big banks which should have been done a decade ago, and they want to lower the voting age to 16 which considering that the youth are generally more politically minded these days seems fair enough to me. I’m for it.
Vote for them if you would have voted for the Greens, and don’t know which to put higher.
Sustainable Australia
Despite the name, the policy of this party is more concerned about population than climate, an issue I’m not sure is especially pronounced in this neck of the woods. I’d put them fairly middle of the road, seeing as they have some policies I’m for (no new coal mines or fracking) and some I’m very against (increased police funding, lowered immigration).
Vote for them if you too don’t know the common usage of the word Sustainable in modern times.
The Greens
Why everything is alphabetical until this and the next one are beyond me. Regardless, I suspect you already know if you’re voting Greens, but bluntly: They’re basically the only ones with a real, functional plan about Climate Change. And considering that’s the biggest problem facing humanity at large right now (yes, including COVID), that’s a pretty solid claim.
Vote for them if THERE IS NO PLANET BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
The Nationals
The nationals end up in coalition with the Liberals basically all the fucking time so if you’d vote for the Libs you’ll vote for the Nats. They’re basically the liberals, but they pay lip service to caring about poor rural areas while continuing to suck big buisness’s cock like a kid with an icy-pole.
Vote for them if you’re a genuine country bumpkin.
WA Labor
I’ll be frank, I don’t think there’s a single way Labor doesn’t win this election. Mark McGowan has developed a minor cult of personality, and they’ve handled the old COVID situation remarkably well. I don’t agree with everything they’ve done in the past 4 years, but their track record is certainly better than the Liberals. Still, they’re not going to be the top of my preference sheet.
Vote for them if you don’t know what small parties to preference first.
WAxit party
I’ve admittedly entertained the idea of a Western Australian Secession, and provided it is handled well am not entirely against it. It does make me feel vaguely Texan, though, and that’s not a position I enjoy being in. This party wants to massively invest in defense so WA can protect itself from an invasion- one that will never, ever come, and I really don’t expect to eat those words. We don’t matter enough to target.
Vote for them if you think Brexit 2 sounds like a good idea.
Western Australia Party
Look at this point I’m fucking sick of all these parties. They have Family Values on their policy list so I’m just taking that as a red enough flag not to vote for them.
Vote for them if you actually read their shit and were a fan of it.
And that’s…everyone. Wait no not everyone hang on.
Independents
I must confess, I basically always forget to read about the independents prior to an election. This is going to be different in every district, so do your research- or just do what I do and stick them all smack bang in the middle between the parties I like and the parties I don’t like.
Ok now that’s everyone. This took a long time and a lot out of me, so I hope you appreciate this shit. Hopefully you are now prepared for what may come on Saturday the 13th, and won’t be too disappointed when your minor party of choice doesn’t win the seat because everyone in your area votes Liberal for some fucking reason.
Top 10 Turn-Offs For Women That You Want To Avoid
Note from the editor, Kyle: Big thanks to Tani Underwear for partnering with us to make this post/video possible. Tani Underwear is the most comfortable men’s underwear that I personally use and love. If you’re looking for undergarments that will change the way you think and feel about underwear, I highly recommend it.
What is this?
Today, we’re showing you the top 10 turn-offs for women, that you NEED to avoid.
If you’ve done everything right with a girl, there will come a point where it seems like you can do no wrong. Where it seems like no matter what you do, she’s going to like anything that you’re about. But guys, even when things are going good, especially when they’re going good, there are plenty of seemingly harmless, everyday things you can do that either slowly get under a woman’s skin and make her lose interest, or just kill the chemistry in the blink of an eye.
So… to help you out, we’re showing you the top 10 turn offs guys do that tend to slip through the cracks. And because we want you to know how to take your game to the next level, we’re also showing you the #1 thing you can easily do, to almost completely avoid turning a girl off. Now let’s jump in.
10. Low Volume Facial Hair
One of the biggest understatements of the year here… facial hair has made a pretty big comeback. For a while (as in, for a few decades), being clean cut and shaven was more or less the norm. But these days, facial hair is everywhere. As soon as a guy can grow it, BOOM. No going back. Full beards, five o’clock shadows, mustaches, mutton chops. If it grows on the face, guys are trying it out.
Nobody really knows what led to bearded revolution over the last decade or so, but there is one unfortunate side effect: A lot of guys are going for beards, when it’s just not in the cards for them. We know, facial hair is cool… and even if you don’t want it most of the time, it’s nice to have the option.
While, of course, your facial hair your choice… when it comes to turning on girls, patchy facial hair typically doesn’t do it for them… and almost always, they’re gonna prefer a clean-shaven face to get close to.
9. Greasy Hair
Alright alright alright. You’re probably hearing this and thinking, wait a minute, I KNOW I’ve seen guys with greasy hair get girls, so how are you gonna tell me greasy hair is a turn-off?
Alright, true. But what you might think is hair grease, is actually hair product. And if it’s product, yeah… It’s probably part of their style. But what we’re talking about today, is about the naturally occurring grease that builds up on your hair after not showering. For some dudes, that grease may show up after a couple days without washing their hair… for others, it might show up after a couple hours. Like sweat and body odor, hair grease is largely genetic, and unfortunately… is something girls will notice when they’re looking at you closely.
8. Ratty Underwear
This one should go without saying. But our reports show that a surprisingly high number of guys out there… appear to be pushing their underwear to the limit… and girls are noticing.
For some reason, a lot of guys seem to have the impression that girls won’t catch that pair of ratty old boxers they’ve got on. It’s either because guys think their underwear isn’t all that bad, or because they think girls just don’t care. Either way, your underwear matters.
You may even know today’s video sponsor, Tani Underwear. Super high-quality and universally girl approved Tani has designed underwear that solves the problems plaguing your underwear drawer and how girls look at your chonies…
Now… instead of showing you a bunch of dudes in underwear (which we’re sure you’d love), how about we show how the right type of underwear, like Tani, keeps girls from ever being turned off by the sight of your boxers.
Reason #1: Breathability
When it comes to your underwear, breathability is everything. The reason why? Because moisture is not only what causes gross stuff like odor and fungus. But it’s also ultimately what causes boxers to dissolve into the shreds on your floor. And not only that, swamp-ass, as it’s officially called, is the result of underwear that offers no breathability in an area that produces a lot of sweat, and for girls who see it on a guy, it can be pretty hard to ignore. By using Micro Modal AIR, a futuristic fabric that’s both moisture wicking and quick drying, Tani’s SilkCut Collection manages to keep the moisture levels to a minimum and the infamous swamp-butt at bay.
Reason #2: Accentuation
Do you like when a girl wears sexy, attractive lingerie? Of course you do, and women want the same. She wants to see something that’s naturally accentuating and attractive. Rather than saggy underwear that looks like you’re wearing a cloth diaper. High-quality underwear, like Tani, are designed to not only make you and your body look attractive. But they’re also manufactured with special materials, like elastane and Micro Modal Air, so that they last longer, and help hold their shape for longer.
In short guys: your underwear is probably the last thing a girl sees you wearing, so it definitely needs to make the right impression… and today’s video sponsor, Tani is the exact type of underwear women love.
Tani was even kind enough to hook Mantelligence viewers up with a crazy deal: buy 1 get 1 free! Check it out in the description… and note: it will only work for a limited-time.
7. The Wrong Thing Playing in the Background
In general, one of the major differences between guys and girls, is that context plays a huge role in their attraction, and overall interest in guys. If this sounds surprising, this phenomenon is pretty well-documented and understood in psychology. While women do like guys who are classically good-looking and well-taken care of, the overall presentation of the guy plays a much bigger role in how girls perceive him. And that also includes the immediate context of being in the moment with a guy.
One of the places this becomes especially clear, is if you’re hanging out with a girl at your house watching a movie or show. If you’ve got comedy, horror, action or anything too distracting playing in the background, it’s gonna be a lot harder for her to look at you romantically, if anything starts to happen… the reason why is simple: Because your entire presentation is off.
Which make sense, right? All we’re trying to say, is that if you’re watching a movie on the couch together, always be ready to hit pause.
6. Smelling Like a Gym Bag
You knew this one was coming. Just about everybody, from AlphaM, to TMF to BasedZeus, has discussed widely the importance of not smelling like an armpit. And the reason for that, is because far and away, a guy who smells bad from a distance, is a HUGE red flag for women.
Now, there are some excuses that girls will let slide: You could have just gotten done working out, you could have been helping a friend move all day, or you could be a sailor returning home from sea. Basically, if you’ve been engaged in heavy physical activity, you’ll probably get a pass. At least the first few times. However, if you’re caught repeatedly stinking for no reason, don’t be surprised if she starts asking you to shower before coming over.
Guys, if you’re a subscriber, keep watching, because at the end of this video, we’re going to show the #1 thing you can do to EASILY prevent turning ANY and ALL women off. So stay with us. You don’t want to miss it. Okay, let’s get back to it!
5. All Grooming All The Time
Alright. So you guys know that we always advocate proper grooming, taking care of yourself, knowing how to dress and that it’s always a safe bet to look after your appearance. But we also know… that with the sheer volume of information, opinion and choices as there is out there, it’s incredibly easy to get carried away in the details and get obsessed with looking good. While your girl does want you to be able to look good, if you’re taking longer to decide what to wear than she is every day, your impeccable style is probably having the opposite effect of what you want.
4. Disgusting Nails
So, you may not think this is a big deal but a girl almost definitely notices how your nails are looking. And even though you probably (hopefully) don’t roll around with finger nails that can take an eye out, they are 100% a detail worth keeping in check. And it’s pretty clear to see why they might be a major turn off for women: They look crazy, they hide bacteria, and worst of all, they scratch. Now, you may not have had the misfortune of accidentally scratching a girl with finger or toe nails that are overdue for a trimming… but take our word for it: It’s embarrassing. And as far as your night goes, there’s basically no coming back from that. While long, unsightly nails are an eyesore for sure, there may be nothing that kills the mood so swiftly as accidentally snagging your girl with a toenail that’s too long.
3. Why So Serious?
Here’s a common scenario: Imagine you’ve been hanging out with a girl all night and while things may have started off alright, they slowly faded until it seems like she’s just kinda ready to go home. As I’m sure you can imagine. This is something that happens a lot. And while there are endless reasons why a date can fizzle out, one of the most common reasons, is just because the guy didn’t look like he was having any fun. Girls are magnetized by fun.
So, if a guy doesn’t seem like he’s enjoying himself, a girl’s most likely not gonna want to hang out for too long. Because like you, like your friends, like anyone else… girls need that feedback to let them know that everything is cool. So if you’re hanging out with a girl, and wondering why she doesn’t seem to be enjoying herself, there’s a good chance, that it’s probably because you’re just not smiling enough for her to know.
2. Failing to Mirror Body Language
Just like you’re wired to respond to what she’s throwing your way, she’s gonna respond to what you’re sending hers. You’ve probably heard us talk about “mirroring” before. Basically, the mirroring we’re talking about is where two people are communicating, while also subtly copying each other’s body language. Mirroring happens almost entirely on an instinctive level, and It’s a way of subconsciously building familiarity. Animals do it, and so do we. But even though it happens with us barely evening noticing it… it still has a huge effect on chemistry. So much so, in fact, that if you’re not mirroring a girl’s body language, she’ll have every reason to think you’re not into her, which will lead to her turning off feelings she has for you.
1. Your Teeth
If there’s one thing, one loose end, one last remaining detail that can come back and bite you just as you’ve got a girl comfortable, it’s yellow teeth. Honestly, this one stings a little bit. Because usually the way a girl finds out a guy has yellow teeth, is if the guy is laughing, smiling and having a good time. It’s a harsh reality. It’s always in that moment when a dude finally decides to let his guard down and relax, that a girl notices “damn, those teeth are just a little on the yellow side.” The good news is that, with all the teeth whitening options out there, yellow teeth don’t need to be something you’ve got to worry about. The bad news is that if you’re just finding this out, you might’ve lost a few points with a few girls already.
The #1 Thing You Can Do to Prevent Turning OFF ALL women
By this point, you might be thinking you’re gonna be walking into a minefield the next time you go hang out with your girl. And while it’s remarkably easy to lose favor with a girl you like and take her from feeling it, to turned off, there is one thing you can do everyday to always have a leg up with a girl, get in shape. Seriously. Now we know, this isn’t as easy for some guys as it is for others, but for a lot of guys out there. A ton of their problems would be solved just by getting strong. The reason why? Honestly, it’s NOT that you’ll look better. It’s not that you’ll be stronger.
It’s almost 100% due to the fact that exercise is guaranteed the clearest path to becoming a fundamentally more confident version of yourself. Which is without a doubt the #1 realest turn on for women anywhere you go.
In Conclusion
If you enjoyed this video, be sure to let us know, and give it a thumbs up and don’t forget to click and subscribe.
And while you’re here, why not check out these other powerful videos?
Thanks for watching!
Here’s why I’ll never use the iPhone X’s Face ID
Nope.
Image: Ambar Del Moral/mashable
The first batch of shiny new iPhone Xs is slated to ship on November 3, and shortly thereafter the lucky few around the country will excitedly tear into their white Apple-branded boxes. And while many of those early adopters will immediately set up Face ID, they may want to slow their roll just the teeniest of bits.
Since Apple unveiled the face-scanning technology earlier this month, privacy advocates and security researchers have expressed concerns about both the tool itself and what happens to the data it gathers. In response, the Cupertino-based company has assured everyone that the system is mostly secure and that it presents no real privacy concerns. Unfortunately, the arguments aren’t all that convincing — at least not in the way Apple hoped. Instead, the tech giant has managed to scare me off Face ID for good.
SEE ALSO: So how worried should we be about Apple’s Face ID?
My aversion to what is billed as the latest and greatest is not some random knee-jerk response to Apple — I happily own an iPhone — but rather a decision based on the pieces of information the company has been willing to release. Looking at what we know, it’s clear that Face ID makes a device less secure, opens you up in new ways to coercion, and sticks you with an unchangeable password that everyone knows.
It’s a recipe for disaster, and one that I am all too happy to pass on.
Security
First, a look at the basic security of the thing. Apple claims that a random person has only a one-in-a million chance of being able to unlock your phone with his or her face. That statistic, however, has absolutely nothing to do with a hacker or criminal actively trying to trick the device. The company says it trained Face ID to be able to discern between mask replicas, photographs, and the flesh-and-blood real deal, but the supporting data has yet to be made available to the public.
Face-scanning tech is notoriously insecure, and even Apple’s Phil Schiller copped to the fact that a password is better suited to protecting the sensitive stuff.
“There’s no perfect system, not even biometric ones,” he noted at the September 12 Apple event. “If you happen to have an evil twin, you really need to protect your […] sensitive data with a passcode.”
Essentially, Schiller is admitting Face ID can be tricked. This is not news to hackers. As soon as the phone hits the scene later this fall, you can bet security professionals will start ripping the tech apart. Time will tell if they’re able to crack it, but the long arc of history bends toward vulnerabilities being found and exploited. Just ask Samsung.
When it comes to hackers versus smartphone manufacturers, my money will forever be on the former.
Law enforcement
The entire reason to lock a device is to keep other people out — whether those people are creeping family members, identity thieves, or (yes) the police. The thing about biometrics, however, is that courts can force you to unlock your phone with your thumbprint (and likely faceprint). That same logic doesn’t apply to a numeric password, however.
Sure, according to Apple it’s easy to quickly disable Face ID if you’re made to give up your device. “If you don’t stare at the phone, it won’t unlock,” Senior VP Craig Federighi wrote in an email to an interested developer. “Also, if you grip the buttons on both sides of the phone when you hand it over, it will temporarily disable FaceID.”
Pretty neat, right? Simply disable Face ID before politely handing your smartphone over to the authorities and you’re good to go! Yeah, that doesn’t work in the real world. In actuality, phones are not politely requested by authority figures. Instead, they are frequently snatched out the hands of protesters, swiped from bedside tables in raids, and pulled out of the pockets of handcuffed marchers pinned facedown on the pavement.
Temporarily disabling a feature on your iPhone X likely won’t be an option right when you need to do so the most.
Your face as your password
Let’s face it: Passwords get leaked. It’s often that we read about some huge breach that exposes databases of login credentials. But here’s the thing: You can change your alphanumeric password. Changing your face, on the other hand, is significantly more difficult.
Why does this matter? Apple has assured us that Face ID only keeps a mathematical representation of your face on the device itself, not in some leaky cloud somewhere. Even so, with Face ID everyone will know exactly what your password is — there’s no need for it to be exposed in the first place. If (or when) the security of the system does get compromised, there’s not much you’ll be able to do about it. You can of course shut off your phone’s face-scanning tech, but then you — like me — will not be using Face ID.
The same argument could be made against Touch ID as well, but there’s an important distinction between that tech and its soon-to-be replacement: It’s a lot harder for bad actors to capture thumbprints from a distance (and you probably shouldn’t be using Touch ID anyway).
Newer isn’t always better
The executives at Apple would have you believe that Face ID is a revolutionary technology that perfectly blends ease of use and security. But we know that not to be true. First of all, the company reportedly isn’t even sure Face ID is here to stay — it may return to Touch ID for future devices. That doesn’t project confidence.
What’s more, the demo failed on stage. While an Apple spokesperson has argued that the fact the iPhone X didn’t unlock as intended was a good thing, it’s a little difficult to take that point seriously.
“People were handling the device for the stage demo ahead of time and didn’t realize Face ID was trying to authenticate their face,” the rep told Yahoo. “After failing a number of times, because they weren’t Craig [Federighi], the iPhone did what it was designed to do, which was to require his passcode.”
Theres’s a few things to unpack in that statement. The spokesperson is copping to the fact that the iPhone X frequently scans faces in search of a match. This semi “always on” nature of Face ID is a huge red flag for privacy experts. What’s more, if even Apple employees can’t figure out how to handle the phone without locking out their boss on the company’s biggest day of the year then clearly there’s a usability issue.
This, combined with the security and privacy one must forfeit in order to use the technology, is more than enough to turn me off to the supposed revolution that Face ID represents. A password, at its core, is supposed to protect your data from a wide range of threats while still being practical. The latest offering from Apple just doesn’t cut it.
Why I Choose Bitcoin Cash
I prefer a Peer to see digital money over the whole lot. Correct now the first-class form of this comes in the form of Bitcoin cash, which holds the ticker BCH on virtually all exchanges. My title is Collin Enstad, i’ve lived in the USA my entire lifestyles. I am a freelance director / cinematographer / steadicam operator. I first heard about Bitcoin in 2013 in the course of its bubble, the place it peaked at $1200. I consider my first purchase was once around $one hundred fifty however I only bought a bit bit, as much as I might find the money for being a broke school pupil. I made some cash and purchased matters with it, like this bizarre digicam rig. Of course part of the adoption of bitcoin is brought about via men and women speculating trying to generate income off of it. But i noticed I had actual utility, I could use it as money. An investment that’s liquid as hell. Excellent. I requested an harmless query in late 2015 on the uncensored bitcoin subreddit, /r/btc: ELI5: Why achieve this many individuals insist on a small block size?. I got first-rate answers, similar to Blockstreams function in taking up the progress, how Peter Todd remains to be seeking to these days to kill 0-affirmation transactions, and how the Core devs have been proscribing the bottom layer to push a 2nd one that they claimed would be even higher than the actual blockchain.All of these aspects nonetheless maintain proper to nowadays. Here’s why I’ll never use the iPhone X’s Face ID
Nope.
Image: Ambar Del Moral/mashable
The first batch of shiny new iPhone Xs is slated to ship on November 3, and shortly thereafter the lucky few around the country will excitedly tear into their white Apple-branded boxes. And while many of those early adopters will immediately set up Face ID, they may want to slow their roll just the teeniest of bits.
Since Apple unveiled the face-scanning technology earlier this month, privacy advocates and security researchers have expressed concerns about both the tool itself and what happens to the data it gathers. In response, the Cupertino-based company has assured everyone that the system is mostly secure and that it presents no real privacy concerns. Unfortunately, the arguments aren’t all that convincing — at least not in the way Apple hoped. Instead, the tech giant has managed to scare me off Face ID for good.
SEE ALSO: So how worried should we be about Apple’s Face ID?
My aversion to what is billed as the latest and greatest is not some random knee-jerk response to Apple — I happily own an iPhone — but rather a decision based on the pieces of information the company has been willing to release. Looking at what we know, it’s clear that Face ID makes a device less secure, opens you up in new ways to coercion, and sticks you with an unchangeable password that everyone knows.
It’s a recipe for disaster, and one that I am all too happy to pass on.
Security
First, a look at the basic security of the thing. Apple claims that a random person has only a one-in-a million chance of being able to unlock your phone with his or her face. That statistic, however, has absolutely nothing to do with a hacker or criminal actively trying to trick the device. The company says it trained Face ID to be able to discern between mask replicas, photographs, and the flesh-and-blood real deal, but the supporting data has yet to be made available to the public.
Face-scanning tech is notoriously insecure, and even Apple’s Phil Schiller copped to the fact that a password is better suited to protecting the sensitive stuff.
“There’s no perfect system, not even biometric ones,” he noted at the September 12 Apple event. “If you happen to have an evil twin, you really need to protect your […] sensitive data with a passcode.”
Essentially, Schiller is admitting Face ID can be tricked. This is not news to hackers. As soon as the phone hits the scene later this fall, you can bet security professionals will start ripping the tech apart. Time will tell if they’re able to crack it, but the long arc of history bends toward vulnerabilities being found and exploited. Just ask Samsung.
When it comes to hackers versus smartphone manufacturers, my money will forever be on the former.
Law enforcement
The entire reason to lock a device is to keep other people out — whether those people are creeping family members, identity thieves, or (yes) the police. The thing about biometrics, however, is that courts can force you to unlock your phone with your thumbprint (and likely faceprint). That same logic doesn’t apply to a numeric password, however.
Sure, according to Apple it’s easy to quickly disable Face ID if you’re made to give up your device. “If you don’t stare at the phone, it won’t unlock,” Senior VP Craig Federighi wrote in an email to an interested developer. “Also, if you grip the buttons on both sides of the phone when you hand it over, it will temporarily disable FaceID.”
Pretty neat, right? Simply disable Face ID before politely handing your smartphone over to the authorities and you’re good to go! Yeah, that doesn’t work in the real world. In actuality, phones are not politely requested by authority figures. Instead, they are frequently snatched out the hands of protesters, swiped from bedside tables in raids, and pulled out of the pockets of handcuffed marchers pinned facedown on the pavement.
Temporarily disabling a feature on your iPhone X likely won’t be an option right when you need to do so the most.
Your face as your password
Let’s face it: Passwords get leaked. It’s often that we read about some huge breach that exposes databases of login credentials. But here’s the thing: You can change your alphanumeric password. Changing your face, on the other hand, is significantly more difficult.
Why does this matter? Apple has assured us that Face ID only keeps a mathematical representation of your face on the device itself, not in some leaky cloud somewhere. Even so, with Face ID everyone will know exactly what your password is — there’s no need for it to be exposed in the first place. If (or when) the security of the system does get compromised, there’s not much you’ll be able to do about it. You can of course shut off your phone’s face-scanning tech, but then you — like me — will not be using Face ID.
The same argument could be made against Touch ID as well, but there’s an important distinction between that tech and its soon-to-be replacement: It’s a lot harder for bad actors to capture thumbprints from a distance (and you probably shouldn’t be using Touch ID anyway).
Newer isn’t always better
The executives at Apple would have you believe that Face ID is a revolutionary technology that perfectly blends ease of use and security. But we know that not to be true. First of all, the company reportedly isn’t even sure Face ID is here to stay — it may return to Touch ID for future devices. That doesn’t project confidence.
What’s more, the demo failed on stage. While an Apple spokesperson has argued that the fact the iPhone X didn’t unlock as intended was a good thing, it’s a little difficult to take that point seriously.
“People were handling the device for the stage demo ahead of time and didn’t realize Face ID was trying to authenticate their face,” the rep told Yahoo. “After failing a number of times, because they weren’t Craig [Federighi], the iPhone did what it was designed to do, which was to require his passcode.”
Theres’s a few things to unpack in that statement. The spokesperson is copping to the fact that the iPhone X frequently scans faces in search of a match. This semi “always on” nature of Face ID is a huge red flag for privacy experts. What’s more, if even Apple employees can’t figure out how to handle the phone without locking out their boss on the company’s biggest day of the year then clearly there’s a usability issue.
This, combined with the security and privacy one must forfeit in order to use the technology, is more than enough to turn me off to the supposed revolution that Face ID represents. A password, at its core, is supposed to protect your data from a wide range of threats while still being practical. The latest offering from Apple just doesn’t cut it.
