someone loved me, someone fucking loved me.
pairing: rio vidal x reader
summary: you have lost the two most important people in your life: your wife and son. so, when death visits, you need to hurt her.
content: mentions of death, crying, magic fighting, punching in the face, angst without a happy ending, bleeding, heartbreak, mention of agatha harkness x reader.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You felt when she died. It was an uncomfortable, eerily feeling; you felt alone for the first time in centuries.
You ignored the feeling. You didn't want to believe she was dead. You couldn't believe she was dead. Agatha Harkness doesn't just die.
You felt her presence before you saw her. It was a gloomy, depressing feeling; you felt desperate for the first time in centuries.
"You can't ignore me, you know," She spoke softly.
You shuddered at the sound of her voice. You hadn't heard it since he died and never wanted to hear it again. Alas, you knew you would. That stupid promise Agatha made Rio promise meant you would.
"Go away, Rio."
Her hand brushed against your arm and you flinched, pulling away from her.
"How?"
The world seemed to pause at your question. The chirping from the birds and the rustling of the trees seemingly vanished.
Rio stuttered an incoherent sentence before taking in a deep breath. "It had to be one of them, okay?"
"What?"
"The kiss of death."
A blast of magic slammed into Rio's chest and sent her flying into the wall. Tears were glistering in your eyes as you stalked towards her, magic surrounding your fingers.
You couldn't kill Death, but you sure as hell could hurt her.
"I fucking hate you." Your voice broke with emotion as you screamed at her.
Another blast of magic hit Rio when she tried to stand, forcing her back to the ground.
"You are an evil, horrible monster and I wish I never met you." You snarled. "You have caused only pain and chaos for my family. You are the worst thing that has ever happened to me."
Rio didn't reply and that only angered you.
You lifted her body and threw her out a window. The glass smashed, piercing her skin. Her body landed in the field of flowers surrounding your house.
Rio was on her feet once you got to her. She was bleeding in multiple places and her own magic surrounded her fingers.
"You don't want to do this," Rio said. "You know who will win."
"I don't need to win." You summoned another ball of magic and aimed it at her, which she dodged.
Your magic wasn't enough to hurt her. You needed to feel her blood on your skin.
You tackled her to the ground and straddled her stomach. You landed a few punches to her face before she managed to grab your wrists and stop you.
"I didn't want it to be her."
You fought in her hold. "Bullshit."
"And I didn't want it to be Nicky, either."
"Don't." You felt your heart breaking into a million pieces at the sound of his name.
The day Death took Nicholas was one of the worst. You cried and begged for her to bring him back—for your boy to come back. Agatha didn't beg, but she cried. You remember holding her in your arms, promising that it would be okay whilst Death stood over you, watching the heartbreak that she caused to happen.
"I never wanted to hurt you." She whispered. "None of you. I wanted you both to be happy."
"I hate you."
Uncontrollable tears fell down your cheeks and you gasped for air in between sobs. Rio brushed away a few tears with her thumb, smiling sadly.
That action broke you.
You wrapped your arms around Rio's neck and buried your face in the crook. She slipped her hands under your shirt and rubbed comforting circles.
"I hate you so much."
Rio hummed. She knew you did.
"She promised me that she would come home. She said that nothing bad would happen to her, but you k-killed her."
Your voice broke again. You couldn't believe those words were leaving your mouth.
"I know, baby."
You cried until you couldn't cry any longer and she held you in her arms the entire time. She kissed your face every time you expressed your hatred for her and she let you make her body bleed with your fingernails and teeth.
She wasn't going to leave. Not this time. She promised that once Agatha died, she would stay with you until your end. Even if you fought her, screamed, and hurt her. She would never leave.
And no matter how big your hatred for her was, her love for you was always 10x bigger.

asleep
pairing: wednesday addams x fem reader
word count: 800+
summary: after many horror movies, wednesday is there to comfort your fears at night. maybe she should've toned down on the 7 gory movies.
Tumblr media
based off my spooktober request!
- Can I request "You still can't sleep? Was it because of that scary movie? Come here." with Wednesday Addams? Like- she made reader watch a bunch of horror movies or terrifying true story movies/documentaries. <3
-
You hated horror movies.
It was something Wednesday Addams knew not too long before you two started dating.
She didn’t even know how she could be with someone who didn’t like basically what her whole entire persona was.
Wednesday would solve cases of the Hyde, dragging you along with her, not knowing you were seriously freaked out.
Now that Halloween was coming, it was no doubt that Jericho turned into the time of year the goth loved the most. Oh how she loved sneaking spiders into students backpacks and hearing them scream.
You and Wednesday were in your dorms, the windows foggy and room dim. The walls were plastered with evidence boards of the Hyde’s existence.
“I think you should probably tune out on this one,” your girlfriend mumbles as she plays with the remote. “I’m gonna watch some documentaries so I can try and solve this case better with whatever they do.”
To say the least, you were clingy.
“No.. I’m staying here with you,” you argue, sinking deeper into the bed.
Fighting you was useless. No matter what you would leave feeling happy. So Wednesday sighed, putting your head to your chest, “Just don’t look, okay?”
You stayed with her word for the first 10 minutes, sleepy and not really responding. That was until you started to focus on what she was watching.
And oh god, you wished you hadn’t.
At first it seemed fine, you were more focused on Wednesday’s concentrated look. But then the next thing you knew, you both were watching it.
You had never seen so much blood in a movie before. It made you nauseous. Yet when Wednesday looked to see if you were doing okay, you looked like you were unfazed. So she switched it to one of her all time favorite horror movies.
It was even worse than the crime documentaries. How could one enjoy so much gore? Well, you had to take that back since there was one you were literally attached against, but what the hell.
As you heard disgusting killing noises, you were terrified.
..
At this point, Wednesday had watched 4 horror movies, the next one worst than before.
You couldn’t do this anymore, it was dark, it was near Halloween. The next thing she knew, Wednesday saw your scared figure tugging on her sleeve, a sign for her to turn the TV off immediately.
“Are you okay?” The braided girl asked, your nod doesn’t give her any sign because you’re shaking against her. Maybe she should’ve been more respectful to your horror level of movies. She was a little too intense with these kinds of movies, after all.
“Come on, let’s give you a hot shower and go to bed.”
-
Wednesday was woken up with you shifting. It was nearly 1AM and every time she had woken up, she would see you staring at the ceiling, away from the door and to the window that was giving the only source of light.
You were quiet during the shower, like you were staring through things.
Wednesday, now with her black hair down, played with yours. Usually it was the best charm to make you fall asleep within minutes. She usually wasn’t the person to be affectionate and touchy at night when sleeping. But after 10, you were still awake, heartbeat erratic.
God, there was even this one scene where a monster popped out from the closet. And your closets were right in front of the bed, making you more restless.
“Oh Y/N, you still can’t sleep?” Wednesday asks softly, breaking the silence. “Was it because of that scary movie?”
When you nodded, Wednesday made a sound of pity, and after moments of contemplating, she shifted you so you could face her. Then she opened her arms, “Come on.”
Immediately you crawled into her, and she could feel the thump thump thump of your heart against her chest.
She didn’t know horror movies made you that terrified. She thought that she herself was already a horrifying person.
“Are you okay?” Wednesday asked after a few moments of silence. “I will admit the thought of your extent of horror movies slipped out of my mind.” She admitted. For a few moments, she’s quiet, before adding, “I’m sorry, I’ll try not to do that again.”
The raven haired girl played with your hair for a moment, “What can I do to make you feel better? I’m not letting you not sleep, that’s usually my role.” She adds, her brown irises looking into yours.
“This is good,” you murmur, keeping close to her as she holds you. Because how could any creature pop up and grab you if your girlfriend is a warrior? She’d kill all of them before they could get to you.
The first few minutes, you were still awake. Which made her worried, holding you tighter, before humming a lullaby her mother used to sing to her.
She sung quietly in Spanish, toying with your hair, looking into the night sky.
After a few minutes, Wednesday, sniffs your hair, your heart beats slow and steady. She liked having that effect on you, knowing that she was the only one that could comfort you to sleep as quickly in the blink of an eye.

My Simblreen 2024 Gifts: Regency Dresses and Accessories
Tumblr media
Yes, I know I used that GIF for my porchlight, but I don't have time to go and take another picture and I'm drafting this the night before because I procrastinate and do things at the last minute. Anyway, happy Halloween, I am sharing my Simblreen treats publicly with y'all
You will be getting three AF dresses (2 for formal wear, one for riding), 1 Lace Collar Accessory (Found in the necklace category) 1 Fichu Accessory, and 1 Paisley Shawl Accessory (Both found in the glasses category), and 1 Regency Poke Bonnet (Found in the Hat Category). I also had a turban hat hair to release but forgot I made it in July when I was experiencing hat hair difficulties so it will have to wait to be released with my next hat hairs.
Below, I'm going to insert some pictures of what you'll be getting, I used meshes and textures from maya40 which she was kind enough to send to me. I also recolored @cringeborg's yplum riding habit because she had already converted it. The other dresses are just a long-sleeved version I made of these. The textures are based on dresses in real life.

Stuff generally works from about 1810-1826. The poke bonnet could very well work until the late 1830s, and the fichu could work from about 1750-all throughout the 19th century.
BGC, everything is low poly except the Augusta Poke Bonnet. It is 27k poly and I cannot decimate it without it having holes unfortunately. If your computer can't handle it, don't put it in your mods folder.
General Warning: I run dx9, if you experience any issues with not seeing some stuff in CAS that uses transparency, I'd run a batch fix with s4s if you run dx11 : )
As always, let me know if you have any issues.

“Ready baby?” Matt sounds from the driver's seat of his car. You look at him, nodding, “yea let’s go.”
You and your boyfriend, Matt, were attending a close friend's wedding. You met the couple in college, quickly becoming their third wheel. A year later, you met Matt on a fun night out with them. You labeled Raj and Carina as your ‘parent friends’, so when Matt got their approval, you were jumping for joy!
Though, three years have passed and both relationships have flourished tremendously. Your relationship with Matt didn’t move as quickly as Raaj and Carina’s did. I mean, they were getting married while you and Matt just hit one year of living together a couple months ago. You were happy for your friends, but a bit jealous that you and your long-term boyfriend weren’t in their shoes.
Exiting the car, Matt grabs your hand and leads you into the venue. It’s an outdoor wedding with flowers and tapestries draped from the sky, setting a fun and playful mood for the guests. It really was beautiful.
“Oh my god,” you slap a hand over your mouth. You look around, taking in the breathtaking view. Matt looks over at you smiling, “I know! This is amazing!” He was in awe just as you were. The two of you take your seats, waiting for the ceremony to start. The groom, Raaj, comes in first, music blaring and his groomsmen following close behind him. When Carina approaches the aisle, all eyes on her, her dress is all white and bedazzled with crystals. Her veil matches, beaded crystals drooping off of it. Looking over at Matt, “I love her dress!” you mouth at him. He smiles at you and nods back to the bride.
You turn your attention towards your friend as she approaches her soon-to-be husband. You couldn’t wait for that to be you and Matt up there. Your heart fluttered at the thought of marrying him and starting a family. It didn’t matter that your relationship went at a slower pace than most. As long as he wasn’t going anywhere, you didn’t care how quickly things progressed. Matt reaches his hand out, placing it on your thigh, and rubbing small circles into your skin. Your eyes meet his and he gives you a reassuring smile.
The two of you watch as your newly married friends circle around the fire seven times and exchange varmala’s. Raaj bows as Carina puts the varmala around his neck, accepting his wife. He stands upright, smiling big as he puts his varmala over Carina’s head. The crowd cheers, giving the newlyweds a standing ovation as confetti and flowers shoot through the air. Matt wraps his arm around your shoulder, ducking his head until its ear level to you. He places a soft kiss on the side of your face, “that’ll be us next.”
Heat rises to your cheeks at his comment. God, you wish it was your moment right now. You had a habit of wanting as much of Matt as you could get, not in an overly possessive way. The passion your relationship with Matt held was undeniable. As guarded as he was, it only made you want to break his walls down even further - and that’s exactly what you did. It took a while, but you got there. So, Matt telling you he planned on marrying you was something you only dreamed about before. He never talked about marriage before, him mentioning it now made you fall into a daydream. Imagining the wedding you always wanted felt surreal to you.
You look over at Matt after a while, “I’m not in a rush.” You knew damn well that if you could have it your way Matt would be dropping to one knee and pulling out a ring right then and there. That’d be considered rude at someone else's wedding, right? You watch as Matt purses his lips together, “I am,” making you giggle at him.
“Seriously, we’ve been together for years. Getting married doesn’t seem too bad, right?” he scratches the back of his neck nervously. Truth is, Matt never knew if marriage was a goal for you. You came from a divorced household, so he always thought it was a sensitive topic for you. He wasn’t wrong and he never brought it up.
“Well, duh,” you say a little louder than expected. All the guests are exiting their chairs, relocating to the reception tables. Matt snakes a hand around your waist as the two of you follow the group of people. “I know we’ve never talked about it, but marriage is a big goal of mine,” you tell him honestly, “and I hope it's one of yours too.”
Your words make Matt abruptly stop in his tracks. The sudden halt makes you stop with him, tripping over your own two feet. Matt keeps his grip on your waist firm, not letting you faceplant and he turns you to him. “Of course, I want to marry you, Y/n. This isn’t just fun and games to me, this is serious. I want it all with you, I want to put a ring on that finger and babies in that belly,” his fingertips dig into your waist as he talks, lifting your hand and stroking your ring finger. He brings it up to his lips, giving your hand a small peck, “don’t think any different, okay?”

Reverse falls
okay, so the brainrot has gotten to me and i literally cannot stop thinking about reverse falls. so here's my take on it. (or at least the pines) (also, im using their actual names)
Stanley:
everything stays the same up until he's kicked out of his house
see, my thought is that along with becoming a master con-man, he also ends up joining a circus
this is the big change
he begins to look for new ways to make the circus more enticing for people, and in doing so makes a crap ton of money
in fact, he makes so much, he is welcomed back into his family
like he becomes rich
but back to the circus business, he hears about gravity falls and all of it's anomalies
he decides to set up shop there, bringing people from all over to see the weirdos and wackos of gravity falls
in gravity falls, he ends up meeting his brother again
their strained relationship doesn't get much better (and i honestly don't expect it to...)
when he meets dipper and mabel for the first time, it is like light has been let back into his life
he really cares for them, but doesn't show it
he is especially close to mabel (like in the show) (they relate to each other)
i think he would be ever so slightly scared of ford and dipper
i think he would still be a very lonely person, but caring nonetheless
stanford:
i think that reverse ford would be a possessive, narcissistic person
filbrick pines put a lot of pressure on ford to be "perfect"
this seriously messed him up
when he lost his potential scholorship, he felt like his whole life was ruined
he decided that he would be better than everyone else
and he succedded in that
he was crazy smart and got the grant to study analmoies like in the show
when he gets to gravity falls, though, that's when it changes
when he finds bill, instead of being mauniplated, he's the one to manipulate bill
he becomes obessed with power and control
when stan comes into town, ford is pissed
but he sees how stan and his circus act could benefit him
so he basically becomes a mastermind in control
the circus brings about new people to perform experiments and what not on
mabel:
unlike the show, i think the kids would have gone to gravity falls since they were kids
this change happens because stan is let back into the family and ford never got sucked into the portal
anyway, mabel and dipper become performers for stan's circus, at least during the summer
they are known as the "physic twins"
mabel seems like a happy go lucky person, like in the show, but in reality she is not
i think that she would be a deeply sad person (if that makes any sense)
see, unlike her brother, she isn't as "special" and because of this often feels worthless
this lets her bond with stan, like, a lot
but anyway, because of her "job" i don't think she would have a lot of time to make friends or have crushes
even when she does have downtime, she has to worry about her image and how people see her
after all, they are the "physic twins"
unlike dipper, i don't she would involve herself in the supernatural much
she really just wants to be a normal kid, but because of her family, she can't
dipper:
i think that reverse dipper would be ford's apperentice
see, since birth dipper (or, i guess, mason) has been a genius
like crazy smart genius
so, when his parents hear about a certain great uncle who can help nurture this intelligence, they send dipper and mabel to gravity falls asap
here, dipper meets his crazy great uncle ford and immeditally loves it
both on stage and doing research, dipper is crazy enthusiastic
he loves what he does, both research and being one half of the "physic twins"
he ends up making his own deal with bill, following in his great uncles footsteps
he spends his free time with ford, learning and gaining knowledge
on stage, he has an uncanny ability to charm people into doing what he wants
he cares for his sister, but rarely has any time for her (i think that if mabel ever tried to leave, dipper would go crazy)
he has very (one-sided) co-dependant relationships with his family (yes, this includes stan)
Okay, that's all for now 😮‍💨 sorry if there are any spelling errors or anything like that. i might make a part 2 with gideon and paz and bill… idk yet.

Evan Buckley Masterlist
Call Me Dad masterlist
Summary: Evan isn't too happy that he has to work Halloween and can't take the kids out. But his day goes from bad to worse when the team are called to an incident, and his family are involved.
(Season 8 spoilers)
Enjoy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
"Are you working it this year?" The apprehension in (Y/n)'s voice was paramount and when she looked over her shoulder at her husband, she watched his expression change.
Evan's lips rolled together and the deep breath he took told (Y/n) he didn't really want to give her the answer to that question.
She nodded to his wordless response and turned to get something from the fridge. She had a feeling Evan would be working, he usually was. Holidays and bank holidays were busy nights for the emergency services and that meant not many people could have the shift off. First come, first serve and even then, not everyone got lucky. Sometimes no one was allowed off, it just depended on the situation at the time.
"Baby, I'm sorry-"
"It doesn't matter, I was only asking." (Y/n) shrugged and shook her head while her back was still to him. It was easier to brush things off and try to carry on if she didn't have to look at Evan's saddened expression. The sympathy in his eyes always broke her down and made her relent.
(Y/n) knew it wasn't Evan's fault. He worked Christmas last year because they had been short-staffed and so Eddie could be home with Chris. He worked New Year because that was always a date he put his name down for as they didn't really celebrate it. And he had even had to work (Y/n)'s birthday this year because he couldn't find anyone to swap the shift with him.
She didn't mind. As long as he could try and get the kid's birthdays off, (Y/n) would take everything in her stride. She had begged him to try and ask for Christmas off this year and ask early because it wasn't fair on the kids if he had to work again and they wouldn't see him all day.
But this was the same. This was Halloween, when the kids loved to dress up and go out and Evan always dressed up with them. They all loved this holiday but now it meant Evan wouldn't be able to help the kids get dressed or see them go out trick or treating.
"Baby please…"
When Evan's hand found her arm, (Y/n) shut the fridge and turned round so she was facing him. She let him nudge her back until her hips were pressed into the counter and he was blocking her in with no escape.
Both his hands found her hips and his head tilted to one side, showing off all the sorrow and sympathy hidden within those blue eyes. He leaned closer until their temples were touching and (Y/n) folded her arms over her chest, resting them on her bump.
"I asked, but Hen's already got it off to be with Mara and we're gonna be busy." Evan knew it wasn't an excuse and he wasn't trying to put any blame on anyone else.
He was a little upset that Hen got to have the day off. He understood it was Mara's first Halloween with them, but it wasn't like she was the only one with kids. Eddie had Chris, and he was having to work. Evan had three kids and now he was having to work too.
He just hoped Hen hadn't already asked for Christmas this year with the same reasoning that it would be Mara's first Christmas with them. Evan wasn't missing out on another Christmas with his kids, especially not when (Y/n) would be eight months pregnant by Christmas. He wasn't working and leaving her to do everything and look after the kids on her own.
"Evan, I get it. I just- Maddie's working too, I've gotta take the kids by myself. But I'll make it work."
Maddie was involved with the kids, they were closer to her than to their grandparents and whenever she was off she would take them out. And on holidays like this she would try and help look after them. But Maddie was working Halloween at dispatch this year.
It meant (Y/n) was going to be trailing the streets with all three kids while also supposed to be taking things easy after the placental abruption. And she wouldn't complain. She wasn't going to tell the kids they couldn't go out because that wasn't fair, she had simply hoped Evan might be off to come with them this year.
"I know, I know and I'm sorry baby, really I am."
When Evan pressed his lips to the side of her temple, (Y/n) could feel her resolve fading away. Her arms uncrossed and her hands moved to grip his shoulders while she tilted her head forward into his chest.
"I wanted to be home with you, you're not meant to be doing too much." His lips stayed meshed against her temple while his hands squeezed her hips and moved round to cup her stomach.
Evan felt bad. He felt like he was always leaving (Y/n) to do everything on her own and he didn't want to do that. He didn't want to be working and be away from the kids during the celebrations like this and miss seeing them dressing up and going out. And he didn't want to be away from (Y/n) when she hadn't been well and might need him.
"We're doing a scare maze at the station this year, I'll bring the kids down to see it and they can get some sweets and pictures. Then at least I can tell them they can't go out for long trick or treating."
The team were excited to be able to dress up the station and do some scary events for the community. Evan could bring the kids down before the public came to see, that way they could look around and Josie and Cole wouldn't get too frightened. And they could get some sweets and look around, and they wouldn't be too annoyed if Evan told them they were only allowed to go out for an hour trick or treating. So it wasn't too much for (Y/n).
"Thank you."
"Oh, and who do we have here?" Bobby folded his arms over his chest and stepped away from the scare maze the team had constructed in just a few hours. He moved the cape that was hanging over his arms so it flapped behind his shoulders and smiled as he watched Evan walk into the station.
He had helped set the maze up earlier and then went to get the kids so he could bring them down for a while.
"You must be the Devil," He crouched down so he was in front of Josie, admiring the costume she had on which looked very cute.
She had a red top on, a sparkly black tutu, black and red striped tights and a tail attached to her tutu. And in her hand she had a small plastic red pitch fork. Her hair was tied up in a pony tail and she had some red horns stuck onto the headband she was wearing. The outfit looked very sweet yet cunning at the same time and the cheeky frin on her face made it all match perfectly.
Josie nodded enthusiastically before she looked Bobby up and down. "Dracula?" She murmured to which he nodded and let her rush over to wrap her arms around his neck and hug him.
"And who's this?"
"He's a ghost." Josie stayed tucked into Bobby's arm but she turned to face her little brother who was glued into Evan's side.
Cole had white face paint on with black circles painted around his eyes and he had an old white sheet draped over his white pyjamas with a circle cut out in the middle so his face could pop through. It was plain and simple but when he flapped his arms at his sides beneath the sheet, he looked the part.
The team had gotten to know Evan's kids, especially Chimney and Eddie since the kids now called Chimney their uncle and they thought of Eddie and Chris as family too. They all knew Cole barely spoke and he would cling to his parents for security and safety.
The four year old stayed quiet but he managed a bright smile when Evan held his hand and let him lean into his leg.
Bobby pushed up to his feet but let Josie take his hand and stick to his side and he grinned at Evan while he looked for the eldest Buckley child.
James was a few paces behind, taking in the surroundings and how different the station looked. It was like they had walked into an escape room rather than a fire house. He loved it. He tilted his head back to look up at the decorations hanging from the beams above them.
But when his foot caught on the table beside him, he stumbled and felt his dad quickly reaching out to grab his upper arm.
"Glasses on." Evan muttered with half a smile pulling at his lips as James stood at his side with a huff and his eyes cast on the floor.
"What kind of mummy wears glasses?"
"The kind who can't see without them." Evan retorted with a knowing look. James had decided he wanted to be a mummy this year, but Evan knew it was because his ribs were still broken and he was feeling down about it.
He had bandages bound around his chest to bind his ribs and help keep them in place and feel a bit better. So James decided he may as well go with the theme and be an Egyptian mummy. (Y/n) had helped him fray and dye some old bandage rolls from the station and cover them with dust and little bits of sand to make the outfit work.
"Do you wanna be the first ones to test out the maze?" Bobby pointed behind him to the start of the maze which had three main sections, and then at the end there would be a bowl of sweets for them to dip into.
"Can we?" James looked from Bobby up to his dad who smiled and nudged him forwards.
"Go ahead, but don't take all the sweets at the end please."
Evan watched James take Josie's hand and let her drag him towards the beginning of the maze and he couldn't help the small chuckle that left his lips. It was going to be Josie dragging James around the maze, and if the eldest didn't put his glasses on, he wouldn't really be scared because he wouldn't know what he was looking at.
"He won't see without his glasses, so he won't be frightened." He muttered softly as he looked over at Bobby. He watched his captain curiously as Bobby looked him up and down and took in his appearance.
"Didn't you have a 'stache?"
Evan's face broke out into a grin when he watched Bobby point to his upper lip. Evan had dressed as a cowboy, simple jeans and plaid shirt and a cowboy hat to finish the look. But Bobby distinctly remembered Evan had on a fake, bushy moustache earlier before he went to get the kids.
"Someone ripped it off." His eyes darted down to Cole who was none the wiser, stood drifting in his own little world for the time being.
Evan had indeed worn the fake moustache earlier, and James had found it highly amusing, as did Josie. But as soon as he picked Cole up and gave him a kiss, the four year old tore it from his face and chucked it on the floor. He didn't like it. He wasn't used to seeing his dad with any sort of facial hair and it had disgruntled him.
"Do you want to take a look with me?" Evan wasn't so sure Cole would want to go in, he was scared easily. But if he knew no one else but his siblings were in there and he went in with his dad, he might like to look around. He was very sensory and always loved looking at decorations for Halloween and Christmas.
Cole nodded but instead of walking towards the entrance, he twisted to look up at Evan and held his arms out expectingly.
He didn't like walking, he always wanted to be carried no matter where they were or where they were going. Evan suspected it was a sensory and comfort thing, his boy felt safe when he was being carried around.
Leaning down, Evan scooped Cole up into his arms and settled his little ghost on his hip. He kissed his temple and walked ahead to the maze where Bobby moved the curtain so they could walk inside. The beginning was fairly simple. Black and purple drapes everywhere and some glow in the dark footprints on the floor along with a few traces of fake blood splattered about.
When they walked into the next room, there was a table set up with fake equipment like needles, scalpels, scissors and a fake, broken bone saw. Everything was layered in fake blood and illuminescent paint to make it glow in the dim lighting.
And stood there in the corner was Hen with a wig that was sparking off in all directions, a lab coat lathered in paint and blood and a needle in her hand. Her make up was great, curtesy of Karen who had done Eddie's make up too.
"Are you my next patient?" The tone of Hen's voice was softer than it had been when James and Josie walked in. She knew she could play a game and scare them, but she didn't want to frighten Cole.
"No!"
Cole twisted his head so his chin was perched on Evan's shoulder and he was looking over his dad's back, facing away from Hen. His legs started to swing into Evan's chest and he fidgeted in his arms, binding both arms around his dad's neck to cling to him tighter. He wasn't impressed.
"Okay, next one." Evan soothed and rubbed his hand up and down Cole's back as he walked into the next room.
Evan felt his youngest start to quake in his arms when he heard the music and saw how dark this room was. Maybe Cole wasn't the best to show round here, Evan thought he might be alright because no one else was looking round here to egg him on or frighten him even more.
The four year old twisted his head to look around, but he jerked in Evan's hold when Eddie popped out from behind a back drop.
Before Eddie had chance to growl or make a noise, a low whine left Cole's lips and he began to cry. His face tucked into Evan's neck and he stuffed his hand into his mouth, morphing the sound of his cries while Eddie quickly tore the wig from his head.
"It's only me, buddy."
"And I think we're done with the maze. It's okay, let's grab some sweets." Evan cupped the side of Cole's head and kissed his temple while he pushed through the curtain on his right to exit the maze. He didn't want to take Cole into the last two rooms and have Chimney frighten him to his core. Getting out now was the best idea for him.
He weaved around the back of the tents that made up the maze until he found James and Josie running out of the last room, laughing and panting.
Evan tried to let go of Coles face so he could reach into the large dish holding all of the sweets ranging from chocolates to gooey string. But Cole gripped his wrist and held his hand in place against his face. Clearly the comfort was making him feel better.
"All over," Evan murmured against his temple and bounced him on his hip before he looked over at his other two kids who were rummaging around for their favourite sweets. "Was it good?"
"The best."
"Can we go round again in a bit?"
"Sure-"
"No!" Cole's head shook against Evan's neck until he felt his dad chuckling and quietly shushing him.
"Not you, you're staying with me buddy, I need someone to guard the sweets."
If the kids wanted to stay for a while and go through the maze again when some of the public came in, that was fine. Evan was supposed to be stationed here at the sweet table at the end of the maze so Cole could stay with him until it was time to go home.
"Just remember you're staying here with me for a while which means you only go out with mum for a little while tomorrow, because I'm working. Mum's gotta be careful."
Evan was glad Bobby had said the kids could stay for as long as they liked. The Captain knew they were all well behaved and would most likely help out too which was always a bonus. The station wasn't taking any calls today so the community could come in and out as much as they liked so the kids could play and have some lunch here. And it meant Evan got to be with the kids for a little bit of Halloween, even if the festivities were technically tomorrow.
He was getting to see them dressed up today so he didn't miss out while he was working tomorrow. And it meant the kids got to have some fun and (Y/n) didn't get stressed or do too much with them tomorrow. Now she was having twins and hadn't been well, she had to take it easy.
***
Evan rolled his neck from side to side, clicking it into place as he jumped down from the truck and moved to stand beside Bobby.
This didn't look good.
They hadn't been told what scene they were arriving to, dispatch only said that someone had been on the phone and then got into a traffic accident. This looked more than a little accident; it looked horrific.
Crowds were already trying to gather round and see what was going on, but nobody dared to get too close.
There were tyre tracks on the road, great black streaks on the concrete leading up to a beaten up silver Ford. It had veered off the road, plowed straight over someone's lawn, smashed up their front steps and was now imbedded into the wall of their house, resting on their porch. The frame of the porch was starting to creak already and Evan gave it five minutes before it started to sway and the house foundations began to give in.
"Can you tell us what happened?" Bobby's hand moved out towards the two teenage girls shakily hurrying over to them. Both girls looked relatively fine if they had been involved in this accident, no cuts bruises or broken bones. They were just shaken up.
"He- he drove after us, he hit o-our car and skidded. He hit a boy." One of the girls pointed towards the porch as Bobby's lips faltered.
There was a victim up there other than the driver?
"Okay, Eddie, Buck start working on a structure to keep that porch from collapsing. Chim, Hen we need to check these victims."
Evan nodded and took a step to the side, there was a lot of wood from the picket fence and the destroyed front porch that they could use to keep the structure from collapsing. They would have to prop it up so they could winch the car out and get to whoever was trapped.
"Why don't…" Whatever Evan was about to say faded on the tip of his tongue when he looked ahead of him.
He recognised one of those voices mixed into the growing crowd around them. He knew that high-pitch cry.
"Daddy!" A loud wail followed Cole's voice and his arms flung out in front of him as he bolted from the pavement across the vacant road towards his dad/ He spotted him straight away. Cole could always spot his dad in a crowd and right now, he needed him more than anything else.
"Cole?" An icicle of dread pierced into Evan's heart and he moved away from the truck, opening his arms to scoop up his son as soon as he was close enough. He picked him up and cradled him into his chest, cupping the side of Cole's face so he could check him over.
Evan's eyes were wide and frantic as he noticed Cole's minimal face paint was smudged. Tear tracks were smeared down his cheeks leaving runny black trails from the make up around his eyes that was fading from all the tears. And his little boy was shaking in his shoes like he had been electrified.
"Daddy's here!" Josie's croaky voice caught Evan's ear and he shifted Cole into his left arm so he could hold his hand out when his daughter hurried over to him.
What were they doing here? Had they witnessed the crash? Where was (Y/n) and James?
"Where's your mum?" The urgency in Evan's voice was unlike anything the kids had ever heard. But Evan tripped over his feet when Josie tugged on his hand and pointed to the porch.
"No… no, no no!"
Words tumbled past Evan's lips, but he could barely hear them. He didn't hear himself telling Josie and Cole to sit and stay exactly where they were. He couldn't feel Cole's nails scratching into the back of his neck or his wails as he screeched for Evan to keep hold of him, but he couldn't.
Once Evan noticed Bobby moving towards the kids, presumably to keep them calm and still, Evan stumbled up the steps.
This couldn't be happening. No. Why? Why now, when Evan was on shift, when he hadn't been here with them? Why his family? Why not somebody else?
His boots pounded against the broken steps that squeaked as if they were going to give way beneath his weight. But when he got onto the porch, he found Chimney stood in front of him. His hands found Evan's chest and he gave him a little nudge, silently telling him to take a step back but the motion only infuriated Evan.
He leaned around Chimney, feeling his heart impale itself on his ribs when he looked at the bonnet of the car.
There was the rest of his family.
James was the boy who'd been hit. Wedged between the car bonnet and the wall of the house, right next to the front door. And beside him, leaning heavily on the car to be as close as possible, was (Y/n).
"Buck-" Chimney closed his eyes and ground his jaw when he was violently pushed aside. He regained his balance just before he toppled onto Bobby who was trying to keep the kids away from the scene, not wanting them to be traumatised any longer.
"Baby- baby, i-it's me! I'm here, what happened?" Breathless gasps left Evan's lips as he blundered over to be behind (Y/n).
His hands found her arms and he leaned over her back, feeling the quiet scream she let out. She had been zoned out, focusing on James and Evan had accidentally frightened her. But when (Y/n) looked over her shoulder, tears streamed down her face and she reached her free hand up to grip his hand that was on her upper arm.
"Evan," The way she said his name had his heart breaking all over again and he felt tears welling up in his eyes when (Y/n) briefly pressed her forehead down into his arm. "He p- he pushed Cole out the way. I couldn't-"
(Y/n) snapped her eyes closed and rolled her lips together when Evan kissed the top of her head.
She hadn't been able to do anything.
They had been walking on the path, about to get ready to call it a night when it happened. Two cars, like they were playing chicken. One hit the back of another and veered onto the path. (Y/n) couldn't move before James had shoved Cole across the path so he was out the way of the oncoming car. All (Y/n) could do was scream.
The boys had been in front of her. James had been walking with Cole attached to his side while Josie walked slower so she could be beside (Y/n). Just a few more paces and it would of been (Y/n) and Josie who got hit instead of James.
"Dad?" The hope in James's voice made Evan choke and he carefully nudged (Y/n) a few paces to the side so he could take her place. The action caused her to let go of James's hand and (Y/n) felt herself beginning to tremble when she let him go.
She pressed up behind Evan to stay as close as possible while he leaned his hips on the bonnet and reached out for his boy.
James looked like he was a rubber toy that was being stretched. The bonnet was pressing deeply into his abdomen and lower chest and the tyre was crushed into his leg. For a moment, Evan seemed to look at him funny as if something was out of place, but then he realised what it was. He wasn't wearing his glasses; either they had fallen off or (Y/n) had taken them off him to try and help him.
Tears were streaming down his face and his arms were both laid on the bonnet around the picket fence that was crushed between him and the car. He had his head leant on his arm, but as soon as he realised his dad was here, his head perked up. He had been screaming for Evan since someone said they called the emergency services.
He wanted his dad.
"I'm here! I've got you buddy." When James latched both hands around Evan's bicep, Evan leaned over him and cradled the back of his neck. He pressed a dozen kisses to the top of his head and took a few seconds to try and even out his breathing.
He had to stay in control. He had to figure out what to do and get their son out of this situation.
His fingers curled at the back of James's head, fisting around his curly hair that matched Evan's. He could feel how badly his boy was shaking and it was as if the pain was radiating through into Evan and all he wanted to do was make it stop. He wanted to find a way to rewind time and slot himself into this scene so he could stop it from happening.
"Hurts." The little whimper James let out made Evan croak. He finally reeled back just enough so that he can look down at his boy without tearing himself away from James. Allowing his boy to keep a tight grip on his bicep.
"It's alright, I'll get you something for that. Where's the morphine?" Evan looked over his shoulder with furrowed brows and a stern expression not to be messed with. He had to have some help here.
He could see Bobby was giving out orders while still staying close by Josie and Cole, for safety. Eddie was working with a few others to make something to keep the structure sturdy so they could move the car. And Chimney was weaving around to the other side of the car so he could try and help.
When Evan looked around, he watched Hen hurry up to him with a medic bag in her hand which made him relieved. There would be some morphine in that bag; something that until a few weeks ago James had never had to have until he broke his ribs. Evan didn't want to think what was going to be wrong with his son after this.
"Buck, why don't you let me-"
"He's not your kid!"
The seething tone in Evan's voice made Hen roll her lips into a thin line and she nodded. She didn't think it was the best idea that Evan be the one to help right now. This was his son. He was getting emotional and that wasn't the best thing to happen in this situation; but none of them were going to be able to tear him away from his boy.
"Dad d-don't go." James scratched his short nails into his dad's arm and gave a sharp tug on his arm. He had been crying out for his dad since the accident occurred, he didn't want Evan to step away from him now.
"I'm not leaving you, not for a second. Okay? I'm right here with you, baby." He kissed James's temple before he held his hand out and took the packaged needle Hen passed into his hand.
He scratched the needle into the back of James's hand and squeezed until all the morphine was in his system. They all knew it would take a few minutes to work, but once it did, the discomfort would fade away.
Evan took a look around before he shuffled over and carefully sat down on the car bonnet. He had to be close and standing at an angle like this wasn't exactly helping. He leaned in close so he could see how much the car was pushing down on James and whereabouts. And from the look of his leg, James had a new broken bone to deal with.
"Is Cole o-okay? I- I tried to get him out- out the way." James sniffed and tilted his head back to look up at his dad.
He wanted to straighten up, but standing straight hurt his chest and he felt better if he just slumped forward like this. And now that his dad was sat on the bonnet, James flopped his chin on his dad's leg and gripped his leg to try and distract himself.
"He's fine, and I'm so proud of you." He kissed the back of James's head as more tears flushed his face.
Things wouldn't have worked out the same if Cole had been hit too. He was four, he was small and he wasn't as strong. If the car hit him it would of killed him. James had saved him.
Looking over his shoulder, Evan waved towards Hen and Bobby who were hanging back to try and help get the structure sorted.
"How long? I need this car off him now!"
"We're on it, Buck. Keep him calm for a few more minutes." Bobby didn't dare say they needed up to ten minutes to do this. He couldn't say that and watch Evan's face fall and he couldn't let James hear that and have him panicking too.
When (Y/n) heard James mutter a broken "Where's mum?" she tried to move back to his side but a pair of hands held her arms and pulled her back. Her head whipped over her shoulder and she writhed around when she realised it was Eddie holding onto her.
He shook his head and tried to pull her back into him. (Y/n) wouldn't be able to do very much, none of them could do a lot until the car was moved. And Eddie knew (Y/n) panicking was only going to make her state worse. She needed to calm down and stay put for now.
"She's here, look uncle Chim's gonna help us too."
"Alright kid, let's get this on you." Leaning over the bonnet, Chimney carefully placed two stickers beneath James's shirt against his chest to monitor his heartbeat. "Let's straighten you up so I can take a look."
James gripped Evan's arms while his dad held his elbows and helped him lean back so he was standing up properly rather than being slumped over. He tilted his head back, trying to hold back the tears but it wasn't happening. He squeezed Evan's arms tight and tried to take deep breaths while Chimney pressed on his chest and tried to feel his abdomen for any tender spots or internal bleeding.
"I'm scared." There was no shame in James's voice; he wasn't embarrassed to say he was frightened because he was. He was in agony, he was trapped. He felt like he was being flattened and at any moment he was sure his insides were going to burst and pop.
His voice made (Y/n) tremble and her hands moved to cover her mouth so she wouldn't burst into tears. Her eyes were constantly moving to the left to check on the kids and she could see them both huddled together on the steps with Hen stood beside them so Bobby could help drill the wood for the structure. They were shell-shocked, but they were okay for now.
All she wanted to do was go up there and hold James. She wanted to wrap her arms around him like she had tried to do earlier and get that car away from him so they could move him. He needed to go to hospital.
Sobs wracked past her lips and she tried again to move away from Eddie but he wasn't letting go. He couldn't let her distress herself any more than this.
"You don't need to be scared, you've got all of us here to look after you. The best team, hm?"
James nodded and tried to keep his eyes open, but he could feel his head turning dizzy and the agony burning throughout his chest was making it hard to focus.
"Dad?"
"What, baby?"
Evan didn't receive a proper answer, but he watched silently as James tugged on his arms and moved his hands towards his chest.
"Is it your ribs, do they hurt?" Evan wouldn't be surprised if James had fractured or damaged his already broken ribs that were on the verge of healing now three weeks after the accident.
But both he and Chimney froze when James's head flopped forward and he started to cough. His forehead bashed into Evan's thigh and he began to wheeze through coughs like he had suddenly inhaled smoke that was irritating his lungs.
"James?"
"Hey, baby sit up for me, please?" Desperation drowned Evan's voice as he and Chimney tried to reel James up again but he wasn't having it. He didn't have the energy and he felt better laying forward like this.
But when Evan rolled James's upper half onto his side so he could look at him, everything within him started to burn in flames and a horrible trembling set in Evan's body.
James was coughing up blood.
His eyes were rolling about in his head like marbles, unable to focus on anything and his chest was convulsing as large splurts of blood dribbled down his chin and splattered onto Evan's lap.
"Hen we need suction." Chimney pressed one knee onto the bonnet so he could lean over now that James's back was twisted towards him. He tilted James's head forwards and tried to listen to his breathing, but his lungs sounded like they were drowning. He was going to suffocate in his own blood if they didn't remove it quick enough.
"(Y/n)- (Y/n) no- Cap we need that car on a winch now!" Eddie braced himself and tilted his head back, holding (Y/n) with his arms beneath hers and his hands on her shoulders to hold her back. She was dithering between trying to lean forward and pushing down like she was going to collapse. The only sure thing was Eddie stood behind her, holding her up.
A horrible, broken scream left (Y/n)'s lips and when she tried to wrangle out of Eddie's grip again, she ended up going down on her knees when her legs buckled. Her head flopped forward, allowing the tears to cascade down her face as she gasped for breath like she was drowning too.
She wanted to hold his hand. She wanted to stand with him and try to help. She needed to be closer, but they weren't letting her.
One hand reached up to grip Eddie's hand that was on her shoulder and she squeezed tight, glad he didn't say anything and simply held her tighter for support. But her other hand moved down to the side of her stomach when it felt like her muscles were tightening and twinging.
"Alright, here we go buddy." Chimney switched on the machine when Hen handed it over and carefully wiggled the plastic tube into James's mouth and down his throat.
The amount of blood filling the suction tube was unnerving, but the coughing, gasping noises James made was worse. And the sight of his chest convulsing against Evan's knees was making tears pour down his dad's face.
"He's losing a lot of blood, Cap we need a transfusion."
"It would take more than ten minutes to get a blood bag down here." They didn't carry blood bags on them, that was too dangerous and it wasn't their department's job. Getting a donation from the hospital was going to take too long, even if they had the blue lights on to get here faster.
A strangled sound passed (Y/n)'s lips as she twisted to look up at Eddie. She tried to ignore the tightening in her stomach while she pulled on his hand.
"What, are you okay?"
"He's- I'm A-negative too. Can't you d-do something?" (Y/n) waved her wrist in front of Eddie to try and make her point because she couldn't find the words she needed.
Evan was a different blood group to (Y/n), but she knew she was the same as James. Her and Evan went to the hospital every other month to give blood donations. She was the same type as James, couldn't they take her blood and somehow get it into James here? Did they have the equipment for that?
A light seemed to go off in Eddie's mind and he nodded and pushed up from his knees, carefully helping (Y/n) up with him as he finally guided her over towards her boy rather than holding her at bay.
"Eddie no-" Evan tried to motion his hand towards his wife, signalling that he didn't want her this close. (Y/n) had already gone into shock and was panicking, Evan couldn't have her getting any worse witnessing this.
"She's his blood type, we can get a fusion going or he's gonna drown in his blood and lose it at the same time."
If they let James continue like this, he was going to bleed out into his lungs and it would be a debate whether the blood loss would kill him or if he would suffocate first. He needed a transfusion to get blood to the rest of his body, not just in his lungs.
Evan looked sceptical, he didn't look like he would agree but they didn't have a choice and (Y/n) was already leaning over his lap and rolling up her sleeve. She wouldn't give him a choice. She was doing this whether Evan was happy about it or not.
"You know that's risky." Hen fumbled in her medic bag to find what they needed, but her voice gave away how uncertain she was about this. It wasn't something they practised or did every day.
"He needs me." (Y/n) moved her hand towards Eddie because she knew that even if Evan, Hen and Chimney were uncertain, Eddie was willing. It was risky but they couldn't let James deteriorate or get any worse.
"Fuck it." Chimney grabbed the needles from Hen and handed one over to Eddie before he held James's hand.
It was hard to lean over James and get the needle into his elbow from this angle but he managed it and held the tube out ready for Eddie to use.
(Y/n) leaned her hip against Evan and laid her head on his shoulder but her eyes wouldn't divert away from their boy. He was still shaking and choking and his eyes had rolled to the back of his head. He had passed out and they could all hear his heartbeat lowering with every second that ticked by.
The small scratch in the back of her hand was nothing compared to the ache in her heart and the twisting, stretching feeling in her abdomen where the twins were kicking up a fuss.
Evan pressed his lips to the top of (Y/n)'s head while he started to run his fingers through James's hair, something that always soothed and calmed down their boy since he was a baby. He watched intently as Eddie connected the tubes to a large syringe and slowly started to fill the syringe with (Y/n)'s blood.
"Ready?"
"Yep."
Eddie carefully pushed down on the syringe until it was halfway down and the blood started to travel through the next tube and into James's elbow.
(Y/n) could feel herself going lightheaded and she leaned into Evan a little more to keep herself steady. But the sound of the heart rate monitor picking up made her sigh and press her lips into Evan's shoulder.
It was working.
"Alright Buck get off the car, we're gonna move it now!" Bobby's voice was the ray of light they needed.
Chimney handed the suction back to Hen now that James's lungs were mostly clear for the time being. And Eddie carefully reeled (Y/n) back a few feet with him, making sure she wasn't too far away so the needle didn't come out her hand. While Chimney held James's shoulders, Evan held his head up and they both kept him in place while Bobby and Hen got the wooden beams in place on the porch so it wouldn't collapse on them.
The structure shuddered and groaned once the car slowly started to be pulled away.
A horrible scream tore past James's lips and his head flopped forward against Evan's hand as a dribble of blood spat past his lips. His knees wavered, but not for long. Evan crouched in front of him and caught him expertly while everyone moved around them.
The fencing and broken beams were moved out the way so Evan could pick up his boy and carry him down to the gurney at the bottom of the stairs. With (Y/n) and Eddie close behind.
"He should have enough now." Eddie's voice was careful and delicate as he removed the needle from (Y/n)'s hand and put a plaster in its place.
"You both go with him, we'll take the kids with us and meet you there." Bobby waved his hand towards the ambulance. It would be better for both parents to travel with James and the rest of them would follow on behind in the truck and they would take Cole and Josie with them.
(Y/n) looked to the side but Cole was already in Chimney's arms, sobbing into his chest while Chimney tried to calm him down. And Josie was attached to his leg, unsure what was happening or where they were going now. But both kids knew he was their uncle and they should wait with him if they couldn't follow with their parents.
She tried to nod and push ahead, following after Evan who was steering the gurney with Hen. But her legs were shaking like they were about to give way on her and she felt like she was about to faint.
The feeling of Eddie's hand on her back was comforting as he helped guide her towards the ambulance. But (Y/n) didn't have the strength to get inside. Her hand clung to the ambulance door and she hunched forward, closing her eyes when another twinge broke out in her abdomen.
"Baby, what's the matter?" Once the stretcher was locked in place, Evan moved to the end of the ambulance, both hands pressed into either door as he leaned forward. Trying to decipher why his wife had stooped over rather than attempted to get inside with him.
"I- I think…" She couldn't find the words, but another pain hit her with such a powerful force that she had no choice but to bend her knees and brace her hand on the floor of the ambulance.
A cry burst past her lips and Evan jerked back when she curled her other hand into a fist and rammed it into the door so powerfully that the whole ambulance shook.
They all heard her mutter "Contraction." in a feeble whimper and Evan's jaw ground tight as he looked at Eddie.
This was exactly what he and (Y/n) and been trying to avoid. She was on light duties at home and Evan had been tempted to tell her to go on bed rest to make sure nothing happened to her and the twins. The stress of tonight and trauma of seeing James get hurt was pushing her into labour.
"We'll get you to a doctor too then."
Leaning down, Evan held onto (Y/n)'s elbows and pulled her up while Eddie stayed behind her to make sure she got up and didn't trip. Evan eased her down into one of the seats and sat next to her, but he didn't like the look in her eyes. She creased forward so her bump was pressed into her thighs and her hands reached out to take James's hand.
Evan leaned over and looped his left arm around (Y/n)'s waist, easing her into him until her head was meshed into his chest and his lips attached to the top of her head. While his other hand held onto James's shoulder like their son was their lifeline.
He knew. Evan just knew that (Y/n) was going to ignore the contractions as much as she could. She wasn't going to listen to her body and he had a feeling he was going to have a fight on his hands to get her to sit with a doctor.
(Y/n) didn't want this to happen. She didn't need this right now. James needed her and Evan, they couldn't leave him or stop worrying about him to focus on (Y/n)'s feeble body that was overreacting and trying to hurt their other two babies.
All their attention had to go to James. He needed them.
Silas Trent | (toxic) business lawyer | applicant for Pennys BC by @bunnithechubs
transcript under the cut!
Restaurant L'Opera, Ciudad Enamorada
Silas: What gall to invite me to her yay-my-divorce-is-finalised-party in the house I bought for our wedding, which she now has all to herself. I have to say, I'm almost impressed by so much audacity.
Laetizia: Darling, aren't you happy that the divorce has finally been finalised? The whole affair took more than two years.
Silas: It only took that long, because we're both petty as fuck and enjoyed making each other miserable during the divorce. It was almost like a game and no one wanted to admit defeat until one of us was destroyed.
Laetizia [laughs]: Isn't that a little exaggerated? You're making it sound as if you were at war.
Silas: Well, in a way I was, how about an example? Florence kept my 1960s Porsche 911 purely out of spite, not because she drives that car. She loathes oldtimers. In fact, she only wanted to get back at me for keeping her horses.
Laetizia: She loved those horses, Silas! That was incredibly mean of you, I'm almost shocked!
Silas [chuckles]: Well, she wanted to play, so who was I to refuse. I just hurt her where it hurt her the most. Easy.
Silas: By the way, I will be taking off work for the foreseeable future. There's a project that requires my whole attention.
Laetizia: We just took over the firm, darling. You can't just leave for some sort of project. What's it about anyway?
Silas: It's a bachelorette show. I might have been a little drunk when I applied and never expected a callback, but as it turns out I'll be joining the next season as a contestant.
Laetizia [slowly]: The Bachelorette ... you're, no ... do you honestly believe you'll find love there? Silas, if you wanted me to set you up with some nice girls, you could have just asked!
Silas: I'm not looking for 'nice girls' anymore, Tizia. I just had one of those and look how that turned out.
Laetizia: So, what do you want now?
Silas [wryly]: A woman to completely get lost in, someone I never want to let go.
Laetizia: I never thought you to be a romantic, but are you sure you'll meet her at the Bachelorette?
Silas: Who knows, I just might.
Goodbye
"when one joy, one love, one source of happiness ends, a new one begins."
(a formal apology to any nuts n dolts fans who did not want to see a 3-pair of their favorite ship and Jaune.)
@spahhzy, @epic-arc. This war has been on pause for a long while. And I hope you've got your rest, because it's season two now. And I'm the god damn BBEG.
October 31st. modern day.
Ruby: Jaune, it's been five years.
Jaune: I know, I just.. I need to do this Ruby.
Ruby released a sigh from her side of the scroll call.
Ruby: alright. Just don't be late for my birthday Vomit boy.
Jaune: wouldn't miss it for the world Crater face.
Jaune hung up as he got in his car. He inserted the keys with the engine roaring to life.
~~~~
Seven years ago. Beacon.
Penny: friend Ruby, may I inquire who this friend is?
Ruby: ah sure, Penny this Jaune. Aka vomit boy
Jaune: t-that was one time!
Penny: understood friend Ruby. Salutations friend Jaune. I am Penny Pollendina. It is a pleasure to meet one of Ruby's friends!
Penny stuck out her hand. Jaune looked at it before grasping.
Jaune: it's nice to meet you too uh.. friend Penny? Nice to see Ruby isn't just stuck with my team and hers- OW!
jaune yelped as penny grabbed his hands with an almost BONE CRUSHING strength as she began to shake his hand. When she let go jaune yanked back his hand and began blowing on it.
Jaune: ah, ah, AH, ah-ha that's a lot of strength for young lady.
Penny: "a lot of strength for a young lady" is that a problem friend Ruby?
Ruby: no of course not.
Jaune: I just meant for your p-physique you got a lot of strength... Then again I was surprised too when I saw Ruby carrying her weapon.. until I saw she had a good bit of muscle. Your clothes are really good at hiding how strong you are you know that Ruby?
Ruby: well what can I say? I like surprising my enemies.. and sometimes my friends.
Jaune: well it works!
Penny: it is extremely beneficial. when an enemy underestimates you they tend to not take you seriously which can be very dangerous if they find out their opponent is far more strong than they thought
Ruby: why thank you Penny.
Penny: anytime friend Ruby.
~~~~
Five years ago. Atlas.
Jaune found himself awake one night as he heard a knocking at his door. He yawned as he got up.he walked towards his door and opened it to see Penny standing in front of him. Her face red.
Penny: friend Jaune.. I require advice on friend Ruby.
Jaune raised an eyebrow before moving aside and motioning her inside.
After a few seconds.
Jaune: so.. you're asking me advice on Ruby and how to ask her out? Why?
Penny: friend Weiss and the rest of team Rwby were already busy. Specialist Schnee was in a meeting so.. I figured I'd go to you friend Jaune. You've known friend Ruby longer than I have.. not to mention certain feelings you've had about friend Ruby.
Jaune blushed deeply as he looked at Penny.
Jaune: who told you I wanted to date Ruby?
Penny: you did friend Jaune. Just now.
Jaunes blush intensified as he face palmed.
Jaune: w-well.. from my experience with Ruby shes pretty dense. If you want to be with her I'd say be direct.
Penny: ah, that makes sense.. now if I may inquire friend Jaune. Why have you not taken your own advice?
Jaune: well.. it's complicated
Penny: it doesn't seem complex to me, you like friend Ruby romantically yet you have chosen not to pursue those feelings.
Jaune: well yeah but, think about it, I've known Ruby since Beacon, we hung out, we traveled together after the fall, we fought side by side, and I've seen a part of that has almost died before you returned. Seeing her happy when she's with you.. I can't just step in and tell her, that's just a piece of shit behavior.. plus, lets be honest I never had a chance to begin with.
Penny: ah, so what you are saying is you are defeated, friend Jaune.
Jaune: defeated?
Penny: you have convinced yourself that there is no conceivable possibility of you and friend Ruby becoming a pair. You have in a sense defeated your hopes.
Jaune:.. that, that definitely makes sense. But Even if I did try she'd say no.
Penny: even if friend Ruby did, what matters is that you tried, friend Jaune. And it is not as if it would ruin anything between you. You two are friends, nothing can shatter that.
Jaune: huh.. you sure about that?
Penny: affirmative. I do not need to run a diagnostic. For I am certain.
Jaune: huh.. thanks Penny.
Penny: anytime friend Jaune. And thank you for your advice. I am glad we could have this talk.
Jaune: same here Penny, same here.
~~~~
Ruby was pacing back and forth as penny watched.
Penny: Ruby I guarantee you this will go well.
Ruby: how are we sure, I mean me and you are dating and jaunes 100% ok with that, what if he's already made peace with that and moved on. What if-
Penny stood up and grasped Ruby's hand.
Penny: Ruby, you know friend Jaune, we both know Jaune. There is nothing you could say or do that would ruin what you and him have. If he has come to terms then he is still your friend. Nothing will change that.
Ruby: Right.. right. Thank you Pen.
Penny simply smiled at her before kissing her forehead. Causing Ruby to blush a little.
The door soon opened as jaune stepped in, he nervously waved at the two.
Jaune: sorry I'm late. Nora needed help with something.. what did you wanna talk about?
Ruby: well uh.. it's.. you might want to sit down for this jaune.
Jaune simply nodded as he sat down. With Penny and Ruby taking a seat beside each other.
~~~~
Jaune stopped his car once he arrived. He got out and looked at the massive cemetery. Made for those who passed during the silent war. Jaune began walking past each of them. Seeing the names of those who fell.
Arslan Altan.
Mercury Black.
Ghira Belladonna.
Raven Branwen.
Qrow Branwen
Maria Calavera
Athena Nikos.
Oscar Pine.
Pietro Pollendina.
Whitley Schnee.
Emerald Sustrai.
Winter Schnee.
Neptune Vasilias.
Taiyang Xiao long.
Many more names, some jaune recognized and some he didn't. But he stopped one he saw one in specific.
Penny Pollendina.
Jaune knelt down and looked at it.
Jaune: heya pen. How uh, how you been? Ruby is doing alright, she and Yang finally got to grieve together. You should have seen us all, we were letting out the water works.. especially Ruby. I'm amazed I cried the least.. maybe I just got to because hey, I haven't lost anything.. I'm the only one who didn't lose anyone.. but you probably don't wanna hear that so I'll just get to the point.. we miss you Penny. Ruby misses you.. I miss you.. everyone does. You didn't deserve what happened to you, you didn't deserve to die like that, not when you were finally able to be human. Not when you finally had everything you wanted.. you didn't deserve any of what happened, you were just a girl.
Jaune takes a breath as he felt tears beginning to well.
Jaune: I love you Penny, Ruby loves you. We miss you and.. we wish you were here. Ruby may have grieved but.. but I can't, not when you died by my hands, not when your blood stains my blade, not when I'm the reason your gone.. I can never grieve.
Not when you're gone because of my incompetence
"Don't you feel, I don't know, guilty for doing what you're doing?"
Agatha raised a brow and pursed her lips at Wanda's question. The younger witch shifted uncomfortably under her gaze and adverted her eyes to the ground.
"Guilty for giving her a better life?"
"For brainwashing her, Agatha."
Agatha bit her tongue. She hated when people used the word brainwashing to describe her relationship with you.
"She's perfectly content here. Why does it matter?"
"Of course, it matters!" Wanda snapped, "Y/n doesn't get to make her own decisions anymore and she doesn't get to think for herself."
"What?" Your voice caused both women's heads to snap in your direction.
Agatha's face morphed into anger before relaxing. She spread her legs and patted her thigh, which you gladly took a seat on. Her arm wrapped around your waist and she pulled you into her.
Wanda muttered a quiet apology before standing and leaving Agatha's house.
"What did Wanda mean by that?" You questioned.
Agatha laughed, "She's just had too much to drink, dear. You know how ditzy she becomes."
You nodded, wanting to trust Agatha but you couldn't bring yourself to do so. A dreadful feeling coursed through your body, but you didn't know why.
-
You woke with a gasp.
You remembered everything.
You met Agatha in the bar bathroom. You were drunk and high out of your mind, but she scared you enough for you to be able to recall the memory. Even as you fought her, she took your virginity and promised that she would be back for you.
You went to the police about her but they had no files on anyone with her description. You almost believed that you imagined the entire thing.
That was until she kidnapped you.
She didn't immediately place you under her spell, but after your fourth escape, she did. And ever since then, you've been brainwashed into thinking that you have been married to Agatha for centuries.
You glanced at Agatha's sleeping form and felt like your heart was about to beat out of your chest. Whilst sleeping, she seemed sweet and harmless, but you knew she was a monster.
You carefully slipped out of bed and gathered a small bag of clothes. You needed to escape.
"Don't you fucking dare."
Magic wrapped around your body and threw you into the wall, knocking the air out of your lungs. You coughed and gasped for air as Agatha stalked towards you, purple energy dancing around her fingers.
"You're a sick fucking bastard." You spat.
The back of Agatha's hand collided with your cheek and you fought tears from pooling in your eyes. She scoffed like she was disgusted with you.
"You love it, don't lie."
"How the fuck can I love something if I can't even make my own decisions?" You screamed, not caring who heard you. "I'm not content or happy here. Wanda was right, you should feel-"
Your words got stuck in your throat as unbearable pain spread throughout your body. It felt like someone was piercing your body with thousands of knives whilst your body was set ablaze.
The pain continued until your vision started to speckle black and you were on the verge of passing out.
Agatha picked up your limb body from the floor and placed you on the bed. She hummed softly as she removed your clothing and kissed your bare skin.
You recognised the words she was humming and thrashed in her hold. Agatha was trying to put you back under her spell. Agatha tsked and her magic pinned your limbs down.
"Agatha, please." You cried, "Let me go."
Agatha ignored you and kissed your clit before wrapping her lips around it and sucking softly. The humming stopped, but magic encased her fingers, continuing the spell.
There was no point in fighting her, but that didn't stop you from squirming uncontrollably. You tried to kick her in the face and screamed in frustration when you couldn't move.
"You're fucking evil." You snarled, which pulled a chuckle from Agatha.
"You should meet my ex, sweetheart. I'd be considered kind compared to her."
"I'm surprised you even have an ex. You aren't loveable."
Agatha smiled but didn't say anything in response. It almost looked like you had hit a nerve.
A wave of comfort and peace washed over you. Your eyes fluttered closed and you sighed. You should just give into her. Life was difficult before her.
No, No. These aren't your thoughts. They're her thoughts being injected into your brain, right? Your life before her was great! You had thousands of dollars of student debt, you were barely able to afford your bills, and you were struggling with friendships.
No, that's not right. Your life was good, wasn't it? You used to live at your cottage and sell vegetables to local farmers. But your life was better once Agatha, an abandoned and hurt witch, showed up to your door and was seeking refuge.
Those pesky villagers were hunting her down with their pitch forks. They wanted to hang her and burn her body. Such wretched, horrible people. It was the 1800s for crying out loud! Surely, people would start to realise witches' aren't that bad.
Agatha is the love of your life. She is everything you will ever need and you are destined to be with her forever.
Wait, what were you just thinking about? Was it about what you were making for dinner? You think so.
"My love?"
Your heart fluttered at Agatha's voice and you smiled. You cupped her face and kissed her softly.
"I think I might be coming down with a cold, Aggie." You rested your forehead against hers. "My body is aching and I feel so confused."
Agatha hummed, "How about we take a warm bath together?"
You gladly took Agatha's hand as she helped you to your feet. There was no questioning to why you were nude as that happened time to time; it just made it quicker to bathe.
"I'd love that."
Tumblr media
You and Mingi had been together for what felt like a lifetime. You were high school sweethearts, and your love didn’t stop there. You had even managed to go to the same university. It was like nothing in the world could stop your love for each other. Everyone called your romance the type that you only see on the TV screen. Even the two of you believed it, but there was always that nagging voice in the back of your head.
‘Don’t get too comfortable; it's only a matter of time before everything falls apart.’
Those were the words that your mom had told you countless times while you and Mingi were together. In the beginning, you always took her words to heart, thinking that it truly wouldn’t last that long, but as the months carried on, you started to take her words with a grain of salt.
Your mother was your relationship's biggest enemy. She never thought that you would be happy. It wasn’t until you were older that you finally realized that it was because she just never wanted to see you happy. In her words, she thought that since she couldn’t have the life she wanted, she wasn’t going to let you have yours.
It instilled fear into you that she would do something to sabotage your relationship, and there was a point in time when you thought about leaving Mingi just for his own well-being. However, that didn’t happen. Instead, you started to open up to him about it, resulting in him saying that you should just cut your mom out of your life. You were hesitant in the beginning because your mom had raised you on her own, but you didn’t think that you could handle any more of her toxicity. So you cut her off, and you thought that would be the end of that chapter.
Until it wasn’t.
You and Mingi had just graduated from university and were on your way home from having dinner with his family. The car was filled with soft music and the sounds of you and him chatting and laughing at whatever ridiculous thing that he had said. He had one hand on the steering wheel while the other rested comfortably on your thigh.
“So, what were your thoughts on the house that your brother was showing us?” you asked Mingi, leaning slightly over the center console. His brother had shown the two of you a house that he had just listed. He thought the two of you would love it, so he offered it as a graduation gift.
Pulling to a stop at a red light, Mingi turned his head to look over at you, a smile pulling on his lips. He squeezed your thigh gently as he opened his mouth to answer you, his eyes sparkling under the city lights.
“I think it’ll be perfect for us. You always talked about wanting a big place for our family.” His words made your face warm, and you turned your head in embarrassment. However, Mingi caught your chin with his fingers and turned your face to look back at him. He leaned down and kissed you, and your eyes fluttered closed for a minute, relishing in his touch until you saw the light change out of the corner of your eye.
“Mingi, the lights green.” You pulled away, allowing him to sit back in his seat and start to drive off, a silly smile on his lips.
His hand fell back down to your thigh as you laid yours over it, grabbing your phone from your purse that was lying on the floorboard. Sitting back up, you noticed lights from the corner of your eye, causing you to look over.
Your eyes grew wide, and you barely even got a moment to shout ‘Watch out’ before the car barreled right into yours. The world seemed to spin and your ears were ringing before everything went black.
Waking up, you lifted your head as a hiss of pain fell from your lips. Your hand went to your head as you looked around; that’s when you noticed all of the smoke around you. Panicked, you looked over to find Mingi slumped over the steering wheel, his forehead covered in blood that dripped down from the tip of his nose.
“Mingi!” Your voice was hoarse as you reached over for him, hoping that he was okay. You quickly moved your hand to his neck, checking for a pulse, and you almost cried out when you felt the faint thumps under your fingers. “Hold on, I’ll get you out.”
After a few failed attempts, you shakily unbuckled your seatbelt and shoved the car door open. Your legs felt like jelly underneath you as you walked, moving on unsteady feet to the other side of the car. The smoke seemed to have grown before you saw the small spark, and your heart started to beat rapidly.
Fire only meant one thing, and it wasn’t good.
Fueled by panic and desperation, you quickly opened the driver's side door and unlatched Mingi’s seat belt before tugging him from the car. His weight made you stumble as you tried your best to stay on your own feet, but once you were far enough away from the car, you crumbled to the ground with him still in your arms.
A sudden wave of heat washed over you as the car erupted into flames and you could only watch as it burned. Then you felt the world start to fade away as you laid your head back down on the cold ground before it all went black.
Opening your eyes once more, you were met with a blinding light, causing you to groan as your hand came up to shield them. Sitting up slowly, you looked around the room, noticing that you were in a hospital room. Confused, you tried to recall what had happened, but it was fuzzy.
Just then, the door burst open, nearly causing you to jump out of your skin. Looking over with wide eyes, you find Mingi’s parents with panicked looks on their faces, which only confuses you more.
“Oh, thank goodness you’re okay!” Mingi’s mother exclaimed as she rushed over to your side, checking you over as you looked up at her, eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "When we got the call about the wreck, we thought the worst.”
That’s when everything came barreling back. You had been in a wreck. Then you remembered how badly injured Mingi was, causing your heart to drop. You jumped up from the bed, grabbing onto Mingi’s mother, looking at her with panic-stricken eyes.
“Mingi. Where is he? Is he okay?” Questions started to fly frantically from your lips and his mother quickly held onto you so you wouldn’t fall over as she reassured you that he was fine, but you needed to see him with your own eyes to make sure.
“You can go see him after you’ve been checked over, Miss l/n.” A doctor then walks into the room, causing your head to snap in their direction. You were about to protest, but Mingi’s mother pushed you back down onto the bed with a stern gaze. You can only sigh before allowing the doctor to do a check-up.
Once he was finished, he stood back up from the stool and gave you another once over, “Besides a minor concussion and a few deep cuts and bruises, you’re fine.”
“Can I go see Mingi?” You asked in a rushed tone, and the doctor nodded as he fixed his glasses.
“Yes, but the cops will be back again for your statement.” He informed you, and you just nodded, watching him walk out of the room.
Mingi’s mother helped you into more comfortable clothing and a pair of slippers before walking you down the hall towards Mingi’s room. Neither of them said a word which only made you feel more uneasy, like something was horribly wrong.
Right as you got to the door, his mother stopped you, and you looked over at her, eyebrows scrunched together. The pitiful gleam in her eyes made a large lump form in your throat. What was going on?
“Before we go in, there’s something you should know.” His mother started, and your heart began to beat erratically under your ribs, fear etching itself into your brain. “The doctor said that with the damage to his brain, he could suffer from amnesia.”
Your breath caught in your throat as you stared at her trying to process what she had just said. Thoughts of him forgetting anything made you feel sick to your stomach, but there was no way he would forget anything that important, right?
Nodding, you didn’t say a word as you walked into the room, finding the doctor checking Mingi over. Tears pooled in your eyes as you took in his bandaged-covered body, guilt pricking into your soul the longer you looked.
Noticing that you were standing there, the doctor turned and offered you a warm smile. "It's a good thing you got the both of you out of the car when you did; otherwise, this would have ended in tragedy.” She told you, and all you could do was nod, your eyes never leaving Mingi’s form.
The doctor offered a farewell before walking out of the room, leaving you with Mingi and his parents. You stepped forward, catching Mingi’s attention. He looked up at you, a flicker of confusion crossing his face. You offered him a smile before opening your mouth to speak to him, but he was quicker.
“Who are you?” His voice was nothing short of confused as he looked at you with furrowed eyebrows as if he were trying to make out if he knew you or not.
You felt your heart shatter at his words, tears falling from your eyes as you took in the confused look on his face. The world around you seemed to crumble and your ears were ringing so loud that you thought you might go deaf. Overwhelmed by everything, you excused yourself before quickly rushing out to the hall, where you finally broke down into tears.
Leaning against the wall for support, you started wondering why this had all happened and praying that it was all just temporary and that Mingi would get his memory back soon. But that same little nagging voice in the back of your head told you that this was the end.
The end of everything you had longed for.
The Tragedy of Love, Death and Maggots, part 16-G
Part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7, part 8, part 9, part 10, part 11, part 12, part 13, part 14, part 15
I paused, thinking about it. “Sure, why the hell not? I'll bite. What's the plan, Mrin?”
It made her break into a proper smile. This time I could see the cracks in it, where something that horrible and despairing lurked. “Are you alright, Mrin? You look… troubled, my love.” The last word lingered on my tongue. It tasted like the fields in summer.
“It's nothing, Doc. Nothing at all.” Mrin turned away, but I caught the flash of grief. Stronger, it was. Starker against the warmth in my chest.
“No, it's not nothing. Don't brush me off, Mrin. Not after everything we've done,” I said, grabbing her arm and pressing it to my chest. “I swear, Mrin, I'm done trying to accept my fate. I'm done trying to make my own heart freeze over. I'm done refusing to admit that I don't care about you, or Athena, or Brett.”
I don't know when I decided that. To be honest, I hadn't quite realised it until the words flew out of my mouth. I suppose it must have been when Mrin burst into tears that night. It always did come back to her, after all. Her and that piercing gaze of hers. It revealed things I didn't know about myself.
But it was true. I was done, once and for all, of letting harm coming to the ones I loved. It was time for me to step up and be a man for once. I pressed her calloused hand to my chest. “Come on, Mrin. Tell me what's wrong. Let's face it together, no matter how horrible. Isn't that what partners are for?”
She looked down, avoiding my gaze. “I've come to a conclusion of my own, Doc. I think- I think it's time I stopped trying to make the impossible happen. I've been stuck here for what, a decade? And no matter how hard I've tried, I can't find a way to escape this place. I…”
“I don't think there is one.”
The admission made her voice crack, and she yanked her hand from my chest as though I'd stabbed her. “Fuck, that hurts to say aloud. But it's the truth, isn't it? There's just no way out. We're stuck here. Doomed.”
It was the opposite of my decision. “Mrin…”
“No! It's pointless, don't you get it?! It's so… so accursedly unfair of you to say something like ‘I love you', right when I've made my choice! I admired you, Doc. I admired how stoic you were. I tried so, so fucking hard to stay calm in the face of everything. I tried so hard not to care. I tried to be like you, and just as I succeed, you do this?!”
She shook, though with rage or grief, I could not tell. “You stupid bastard. You and Athena and Brett, you've all left me no choice.”
“I've got to save you all. Even if it means killing myself.”
“Mrin, what the hell are you talking about?” I tried to reach out again, and she gave me an infuriated look.
“Run the numbers, Doc. I'm never going to be happy here. I don't want to spend my life chasing something that will never come to pass. It's all so pointless. Pointless, I tell you.”
“You're repeating yourself again, Mrin.” Even as I said it, I knew it was useless. We really were doomed to repeat our mistakes. This conversation had been the lead-up to Athena's death, and it was gonna be the lead-up to Mrin's too. I felt that mantle of despair settle about my shoulders, unavoidable as ever.
Yet I had to try anyways, didn't I? Wasn't that what I'd told her just now? Damn, this trying thing was hard. It was hard to get arms to move when they'd stayed still for so long, hard to get the ball rolling when it'd been gathering moss for forever, hard to try when it was so much easier to just not. But I had to. For Athena, who I hadn't reached out to in time. For Brett, who I could have saved if I'd been less of a fool.
For Mrin, who I still had. Who I would lose. Who I couldn't lose, not when we'd admitted the truth to each other.
“It's not pointless, Mrin. You're a fool if you believe that.”
So human au before they moved in with Carmilla whenever Emily had a nightmare or was feeling bad Sera let her sleep with her and cuddle up with her it always made Emily feel better to cuddle up with her sister and just be held she suspected that it also made Sera feel better. Whenever Sera seemed upset or overly stressed Emily would offer but Sera always said no trying to deny that things were worse than normal. Eventually Emily started pretending to have nightmares whenever she thought Sera was overly stressed or upset so far she hasn't caught on but is worried that her concerns are scaring Emily and affecting her.
Sera will be the first to admit -- despite Emily being the most easy-going child a guardian could ask for, raising her hadn't always been sugar and rainbows. Adjusting to life as a working adult had been quite a jarring experience to the young college dropout. Being a parent responsible for another entire human life, well... that had been something else entirely.
Daytime was easier, in retrospect. She would drop Emily off at daycare at the ass crack of dawn, put in her 8 hours at the office, and then leave in the late afternoon to pick her sister up and take her home. Emily was always a delight for her teachers -- she never fussed at mealtimes, always played nice with the other children, and went down for a nap like the sandman himself had knocked her out cold.
She was happy as could be on the ride home, and during dinner, and in the few hours that Sera got to play with her before bed. The sisters would go on many fantastical adventures with what dolls and toys Sera could afford. Emily would giggle like a maniac, ask Sera for "uppies!" when the young girl was feeling needy, and ultimately fall asleep in her arms after a bedtime story.
Daytime and its waning hours were easier. It was nighttime that often proved troublesome. Not that she blamed Emily in the least. Not after what her little sister had been through.
It didn't happen every night. Not even most nights. But once or twice a week, usually at ungodly hours of the morning, when the world was dead and every other living thing was sound asleep, Sera would be awoken suddenly by a cry somewhere in the apartment.
Back when she'd slept in the living room, because she'd given the bedroom to Emily...sounds of sobbing and abject fear would get closer and closer to her from down the hallway. Tiny footfalls would draw nearer, ever and ever faster, until a tiny body would be trying desperately to climb onto the futon next to her. Little grasping hands would grip her face, and hot breaths would brush against her cheeks, screaming her name.
"Sera! Sera! Up! Want up!"
The first few times it happened, Sera had been terrified, worried her sister was in physical pain. That she'd somehow hurt herself wandering around at night, or got into something she shouldn't. After the next few times it happened, she learned to stop panicking. It didn't help Emily, and only got her even more worked up.
After Sera learned what those tiny hands felt like on her face, and how the weight of the futon would dip whenever her sister wanted "up!", the older woman would reach out for Emily in the dark, and pull her up onto the thin mattress, drawing her close into her arms.
"Ssshh! Ssshh! Emi, my love, you'll wake the neighbors. It's okay. You're all right. Tell me what happened?"
"Monster! The monster! It crash! I scared!"
Sera learned early on that even though Emily was too young to understand exactly what happened to her that night, Emily still had vivid dreams of the moment their parents died. She can't imagine what that felt like...being such a tiny, helpless person, strapped into a car seat, experiencing such a violent event. Then having to be dragged out of a car by the jaws of life, and handed off to complete strangers she'd never met before, with the flashing lights of ambulances and screams of police sirens all around...
Fuck, even an adult would have lingering trauma after surviving something like that. Let alone a baby. Sera is astonished Emily can even function as well as she does, all things considered.
But these late-night episodes...even though they ring with the echoes of past trauma...these moments were just for them. If Sera had been completely honest with herself, they were reminders that she was needed. That Emily loved her, specifically sought her out for warmth and comfort, and trusted her to soothe the pain and fear away.
Sera got used to having Emily beside her at night. They'd fall asleep, and awaken to a world that was much more beautiful and bright than the things that lingered in the dark, that were waiting to snatch up little girls without warning. At some point, it became a sort of comfort for Sera, knowing that Emily would be there when she woke up, all snotty-nosed and drooling on their shared pillow. She'd have to drag them both out of bed, and get ready for the day, but it was well worth it.
So when time happened, and Sera eventually got them an apartment with their own rooms, Emily grew out of her incessant night terrors. She was getting older. She was growing up, and starting school, as children are wont to do. More often than not, she stayed in her own bed at night. All night.
Sera began to feel... against her own will and better judgement... utterly and selfishly begrieved.
Sera's world was getting more complicated. Her job was more demanding, the bills were piling up, and she didn't make enough to cover them. While she was still relatively trapped in the same old cycle for years on end, Emily herself was changing. Every day, her little sister was evolving, and coming into her own. Even though she knew it was completely unwarranted, and entirely foolish to feel this way about a child...Sera couldn't help but feel her sister slowly but surely pulling away.
Not physically or emotionally. Just in the way she interacted with the world, and the way her independence kicked into full throttle by the time she was 7 years old.
Emily was leaving Sera behind. And even though Emily would never admit it to her big sister, the introspective, empathetic little girl understood far more than Sera gave her credit for.
She sensed the stress that Sera was going through. Felt it in the way Sera worked longer hours, and forced herself to talk to her after school. The way she could barely stay awake long enough to help Emily with her homework. Every time Emily would ask Sera, "Are you okay?", Sera would just give her a feigned, forced smile, and pretend everything was fine.
"I'm okay, Emi," Sera would say, despite the clear weight of the bags under her eyes, and the pallor of her skin in the unnatural light of the kitchen. It was obvious Sera wasn't okay, but Emily trusted her sister implicitly. Sera took care of her. Provided for her. Her big sister always encouraged her to tell her when something was wrong. To always ask for help when she needed it. She would never lie to Emily about something like this.
Would she?
Emily didn't mean to deceive Sera. Not really. It wasn't really lying when it was a half-truth. In the way that logic worked in the mind of a 7-year-old, Emily reminded herself that lots of kids she knew threw tantrums, or faked being sick, or worse. This was nothing, compared to all that.
Right?
One evening -- the night before Emily knew her sister would be interviewing for a big, important job in the city the next day -- she managed to stay awake until she heard Sera settle herself into bed. Emily waited another 30 minutes or so after that, to not make it obvious. She stayed awake as long as she could, until the weight of her own eyelids threatened to force her asleep before she could execute her plan.
With her last burst of energy, Emily forced a convincing wail out of her mouth. It came naturally, after a few minutes. She still remembered what the dreams felt like, and drew upon those memories. It wasn't hard. They didn't haunt her as much anymore, but they were still there, sitting behind her brain, ready to fuel the performance of the century.
She didn't wait too long after that to go to Sera; she was afraid she wouldn't be convincing, if Sera had to get up to check on her. She rushed into Sera's room, not bothering with the light, and crawled into bed beside her sister. Sera's new bed was much smaller than the futon had been, but there was still more than enough room for her to crawl under the covers and cuddle up next to her. Like when she was little.
"Sera, wake up! Please! I had the dream again!"
Sera seemed genuinely shocked, when her sister suddenly manifested in the bed beside her. Not having been forced out of a dead sleep for close to a year at that point, it genuinely took her several seconds to comprehend what was happening. Emily was smashed up right next to her face, hot tears pouring down her cheeks, like they hadn't in such a long time...
Sera's arms shot out and gripped her tightly, almost before her brain finished catching up with what was happening. Emily continued sobbing into her shoulder, and Sera's hind brain took control, like an instinct. In her half-asleep stupor, Sera didn't even have to think before starting to comfort the little girl.
"Oh, oh, my Emi! It was just a dream, darling. I'm here. Come here."
Sera scooted back in the bed, up against the wall, so Emily had plenty of room on the mattress. She'd traded that old futon for a new twin bed some time ago. But Emily was still small enough to fit in there with her, and honestly, with even tighter quarters, it just meant the girl cuddled up even closer to her than usual.
"Do you want to tell me about it?" Sera asked, yawning, and stroking Emily's cheeks. She was doing a terrible job of hiding how tired she truly was; fighting against the dirty beast that was the need for sleep, to be there for her little sister once again.
"...No," Emily said, bluntly. She was exhausted, too, and didn't want to have to pretend to be in distress any more than she already was. "Just hold me, Sera. Please."
"Okay..."
Sera held Emily close to her, for the rest of the night, until the incessant blaring of her phone alarm went off the next morning. Upon waking to the fresh hell that was her daily routine, Sera was pleasantly surprised to feel more rested than she had in a long while. Thank heaven for that, she'd thought. She was going to need all the extra energy she could spare that day.
As she and Emily prepared to leave, piled into the car, and headed toward Emily's school, the smile on Sera's face was a touch more genuine than it had been lately. As they pulled up to that big, fancy building that Emily called her school, Emily opened her door to get out, but Sera held on to the child's arm, pausing her departure for just a moment longer.
Sera smiled and pulled her sister closer, to land a perfectly aimed, maternal sort of kiss directly to her cheek. All lips, with an exaggerated "mwah!" at the end of it. Emily blushed profusely.
"Sera, stoooop!" Emily whined. "Not in front of my friends!"
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" Sera insisted, laughing. "I just love you so much."
Emily wiped the invisible essence of her older sister off her cheek with defiance. She closed the car door, and hoisted her heavy backpack further up her shoulder. For some reason, the girl insisted on taking all of her workbooks home after school every night, to absolutely make sure she got all her homework done. For better or worse, she really was learning to be as dedicated to academics as her sister.
Before Emily could walk away, Sera beamed at her. She blew her another kiss, and despite herself, Emly grinned and blew one back.
"I love you, Em!" Sera said. "Things will be better soon. I just know it. I have a good feeling about today!"
Emily smiled, and waved at Sera as she put the car into drive. "I love you, too! Do your best!"
Sera watched and made sure Emily entered the school building safely before she pulled away. She had her interview first thing that morning, with a stoic, surprisingly no-nonsense woman named Carmilla Carmine, that she had a really good feeling about.
She guessed she could be back to her regular office job by 10:00, if she played her cards right. She'd told her boss she had a dentist appointment that morning, and Sera was determined to stick to that story, whether she got this new job or not. What her boss didn't know, wouldn't hurt him.
You ever think about how The Curse was so much more than “winning” against Snow and the Enchanted Forest crew?
Like sure. It trapped all of those people in a time loop. Condemned to whatever Regina saw fit.
But in reality what did she do to any of them before Emma came to town? She didn’t make their lives miserable. She didn’t blackmail, or torture, or kill anyone.
No. She left them to their own devices. They had jobs and relationships and lives. And she was okay with that because the real reason for the curse wasn’t to fucking win.
It was for her to start over.
Her entire life playing in the palm of others hands. Cora, Rumple, The King. Having to give up on her dreams. Her autonomy. Her life and love.
The true reason for the curse was so that she could start over without all those peoples influences. So that she could have a whole new life as well. Where no one remembered her for what she did, for what she had become.
She could be free.
And whats so fucking sad about this. Is that she could have been. She could have started over. She could have remade her whole life however she wanted it. Been whoever she wanted. But all that hurt was too much.
She couldn’t just travel to the new land alone. Absolutely not! She had to bring everyone with her, because how dare they have there happy ending. Her happy ending.
She had to keep an eye on them. She had to be in control. Because Regina doesn’t know how to live without being in control anymore. Because-because-because when she’s not...people die. Bad things happen to her even when she tries to do good things.
It’s just so much easier if she’s the one ruining her own life. Than everyone else.
So do you guys actually think that Jason's entire story, relationship to the others, and philosophy amounts to him being a rebellious teen who wants his dad's attention? Like are you 100% serious? I thought you were joking about that but too many of you are saying it with your whole chest.
And what the fuck is this "Bruce antagonizing Jason is fanon!" Shit I've been seeing? You guys are aware that a parent can love their kid and still be a shit parent right? I know you guys don't want to fathom the thought that maybe your blorbo might also occasionally have to face responsibility for consistently endangering children but let's not start being delusional now.
Bruce does love his kids, that doesn't mean that he hasn't hurt them. And I'd also argue that for the most part he feels in the right for it, and he's said multiple times that he believes it's for their own good, so you can't even argue that he's sorry about it. It's okay for you guys to admit that your PERSONAL INTERPRETATION of the character wouldn't do that but don't sit here and pretend that it's not a facet of the source.
#you can argue meta until you're blue in the face#but I can't ignore the ingerent abuse of Batman and Robin because DC is always drawing attention to it#Stephanie and Jason directly died because of Robin#Stephanie wanted to impress Bruce to live up to his idea of a sidekick and prove her worth#Sheila only sold Jason out when she found out he was Robin#Damians life certainly got worse when he became Robin/moved with Bruce#if you bring up racist retcons I'll kill you btw#how are we supposed to read children dying and being tortured and traumatized constantly#and just ignore that these are children#I can ignore the reality of child sidekicks in campy light hearted early comics#but if DC wants to deal with serious topic they're going to have to deal with some serious implications too#Also that post that's going around about “Bruce loves Jason and it's Jason who's causing all the animosity” is such bullshit#what the fuck are you even talking about#and let's not act like Jason is the ONLY one at fault and Bruce is just a poor loving father#is Bruce spreading that utter bullshit about Jason's death and who he was not an act of violence?#was he not the one to cast the first stone by disgracing Jason's legacy and using a version of him that never existed as a cautionary tale#and I know some of you are going to argue that with most of the kids there's nothing Bruce could have done to stop them#and this is the one time in which I will ignore all the very real ways that he could have#but I still think that in universe the characters have a right to be angry about it#Jason always since his debut as red hood been a vehicle for calling out Bruce#he's so heavily steeped in meta narrative because his run is when they started dealing with the real BAD cases#The Cult Garzonas onscreen murders were getting more common#AND NO ONE CAN CONVINCE ME THAT BEING ROBIN DIDN'T MAKE JASON'S LIFE WORSE#THERE WAS NO REASON TO MAKE HIM ROBIN HE COULD HAVE BEEN VERY HAPPY AS JUST A NORMAL KID#But Bruce made having a place in his home synonymous with being Robin because the narrative dictated it had to be#what was homeless orphan Jason going to do? say no?#it was basically coercion and it doomed him and he has every right to blame the adult that put him in that position#dc#bruce wayne critical#bat family
#something to be said not just about how Ibrahim aims to replace his past family with his present bond with Süleiman (and Musti and Mahi#branch off of that bond) but also how Hatice fits in all of this - the one Ibrahim leans on everytime he's likely to lose SS is *her*#she isn't just the future he wants to secure in the castle but also the past he yearns for outside of it especially in that initial period#of their relationship; and not just any past but a very particular fragment of it - the next most valuable person of his past other than#his brother: his *mother*. it's no wonder him playing *his mother's* melodies with the violin marks the beginning of their story and stays#an important motif throughout. just like Ibrahim's mother Hatice is so familiar yet so out of reach (and this unreachability accumulates in#E13 - Ibrahim leaves for Parga thus returning to his past but leaving Hatice behind but *then* finding out his mother is gone too.#*both* people he wants to be close to soo much are *gone* in that moment. there's a link between them because of this. also Hatice tieing#lbrahim's mother to “heaven” as well and her “looking at their happiness from above” Ibro responds with in E14.) Hatice will distance#more and more from that role later on until lbrahim starts to outright abandon this whole 'return to the past' idea with Hatice and#search for it through Nigar instead. but yeah anyway I feel these two scenes are the perfect encapsulation of how complicated#the past is for lbrahim; he avoids remembering it because it *hurts* to remember both because why would he remember it when he already has#an established future and because deep down he resents what he's become and established as that isn't ever permanent and he's lost all else#*himself* most of all as who is a person without his roots? he wants to forget them but can't ever do it so what's left is replacing them#*all of them*; when he finds Hatice too he wants to have *both* her and Süleiman and SS marrying Hatice off directly challanges that want#up to that point he believed in the possibility of their love more than Hatice did; now? he seems as lost as she is not knowing what to do#the only way not to lose either of them is accepting Süleiman's order convincing himself that this is how it should be no matter how much#that hurts and would bury him even deeper; he can't bear it so he searches for a solution - and when he sees Rhodes sea? it hits him#it hits him how low he's actually sunk through the losses and if he can't “fully* replace the past he'll *fully* return to the past letting#*everything else* once hidden out as well. not to mention how right before he left to Parga he was brought to fear for his literal death#and then he is given more power that also brings some uncertainty with it and that likely scared him cementing his departure for Parga#directly following Piri Pasha's advice to let power go as it won't let *you* go#(btw a big contrast between S01 and S03 Ibrahim can be drawn in his relationship with Piri Pasha and his relationship with Ebusuud)#magnificent century#muhteşem yüzyıl#muhtesem yuzyil#ibrahim pasha#(sorry for the disorganized tags but if I kept it like it was I would've exceeded the limit before I even finished 😅)#(just Ibrahim and Hatice in general are people who latch onto each other to get over their losses and ache for peace amidst their turbulent#lives and positions and that's what keeps them close and will later too)
