you grew up not religious, but in a religious family. you were told that being gay was wrong, and ignoring the voice inside you, you told yourself you were straight.

you were in a toxic relationship which you knew was toxic beucase of the things people had told you. when you started classses at uconn in 2021, you boyfriend was also attending uconn. you knew about paige, but had never been much into basketball although your boyfriend was.

he took you to a uconn wbb game and sat there as you waited for the game to start. and suddenly, you saw paige. you never seen her looking so beautiful, and felt like soemthing about you had been changed when suddenly you and paige made eye contact as you were sitting pretty close to the court.

uconn won the game, and you acted you payed attention on the ride your boyfriend gave you up your dorm knowing you only had eyes for paige the entire game. “yea i had fun,” you say tiredly.

the next day you had a 11 am class, and as you walked into the lecture hall you spotted someone across the hall from you. paige. you looked over to her in the crowded hallway, and quickly looked back. you walked into the lecture hall before paige, as you sped up the pace of your walk in the hallway.

you sat down closer to the back in the middle of a empty row. you sat down and got your computer out of your bookbag, when you heard someone. “hey, can i sit here?” you heard a deep voice say, it was paige. “oh uh yea that’s fine.” you say with a smirk, paige sits down also with a smirk. while you wait for the professor to arrive to class, you and paige had conjured up some small talk, when suddenly paige turned to you, “wait, were you at my game last night?” paige says with a grin curling in the corner of her mouth.

Dick saw you getting a little too drunk at a party so he had to take you to his place to sober up.

!THIS IS PURE FICTION, NOTHING IN THIS IS REAL ITS JUST A STORY!

It’s 11pm there was a massive party happening in Bruce Wayne’s Mansion, I somehow won an invitation, it was a one in 30 chance to be invited and I somehow got it. It isn’t that surprising as it could’ve been way harder to get in due to it being a party in a billionaires mansion. the party only started half an hour ago and I’m already 6 drinks in, all of the alcohol, drinks and food are all expensive high quality stuff, I didn’t end up reading the alcohol percentage on the drinks due to not being able to because of the flashing lights, but that’s not the worst part. I didn’t know how strong and rich tasting the drinks could be.

I can barely stand or move around without stumbling over myself. I cannot go home like this yet alone take care of myself while drunk. I need to get out of this party and get some fresh air. I place my hand on the wall as I walk trying to keep myself steady, I continue walking slowly, trying to keep my balance.

I look around anxiously praying that no one’s staring at my pathetic attempts to walk, especially important figures in this city, cause oh god that would be so embarrassing, I would fucking kill myself! What if Nightwing saw me like this? He’s helped patch me up after I got stabbed once but being found and saved while being extremely god damn drunk is probably 10 times worse than me being stabbed, that’s just my personal opinion though. I’d rather cry in front of someone instead of them seeing me intoxicated.

I make it to the door and exit the mansion that the party was held in, once I’m outside I sit on a step and take a blunt I rolled up before I left out of my purse, lighting it with a flick of my lighter. I hold the cigarette between my fingers and inhale softly, trying to get my senses back to sober up faster; even though weeds definitely not going to help it, not even a little bit. I don’t have enough money for cigarettes lately so my stash of pot is all I can rely on.

“Y/n? You shouldn’t be doing drugs outside it’s risky, especially outside of Bruce’s property. Look I won’t turn you in or tell anyone but just for future reference”. It’s a man, he has the same physique as Nightwing as well as the same voice. “Who youuu an how do you know my naame..?” I ask, god why do I sound so fucking stupid when I’m intoxicated? “I’m Dick, Dick Grayson, you probably know me better as nightwing, since that one time I saved you. And for your name well, I looked it up in the files, I was curious and wanted to learn more about you and that was the only way to do so.”

He takes a seat next to me on the stairs. “Ohhhh hi dick… hehe, dick..” I lean my head on his shoulder, I reek of alcohol and weed. “You’re drunk, how much did you have to drink?” He takes my hands in his and looks at me sternly in the eyes. “Like 6 or….orrr 6… or mayyybee 7…?” I respond before quickly turning to the side and throwing up on the pavement next to me, holding my head in my hands, it’s pounding and I can hardly feel anything. “Fuck you’re drunk. I’m going to take you back to mine and take care of you for the rest of the night, you’ve had way too much to drink.” He sighs, lifting me onto his back like I’m a child again and bringing me back to his car, he buckles me into the passenger seat before hopping into the drivers seat and starting the car.

“I’m sorry... I’m sorry..” I mumble, resting my head against the window. “For what?” He questions.

“that you have to.. to waste time… looking after me” I whine, trying to keep my eyes open, but it’s difficult.

“you’re not wasting any of my time, trust me. I’d rather help you out than some other random drunk guy.” I close my eyes as my head sinks into the car seat relaxing myself as the drive continues on. a few minutes later Dick wakes me up “We’re here. need help getting inside?” he asks. “where are.. where are we…?” I look up at him rubbing my eyes. “my house, hope that’s okay, it was closer after all.” He says, opening the door and helping me out of the car. I wobble along slightly before finally standing up straight with his help.

“My room is upstairs, come on.” He tells me pointing the stairs up ahead. “okay,.” I attempt to walk up the stairs but end up stumbling and falling backwards. Dick grabs my arms to stop me falling backwards and luckily ends up catching me. “careful” he mumbles, taking my hand and helping me get up the stairs and into his room. “Here, lay down here” He places me onto the bed, I’m still drunk but my head feels more clearer now than before. He sits down beside me. “So how do you feel now? Are you still feeling sick? Do you need anything? Food, water..?” His hands are clasped together, he’s nervously tapping on his leg, clearly not used to practically ‘babysitting’ a drunk person. “I’m okay… I think”. I say, yawning a little. My head starts hurting all of a sudden. “ow.. fuck, p-painkillers maybe.” I whisper to myself, feeling a headache coming on. “You want pain killers?” he questions, raising an eyebrow at me. “Yeah please.” I reply, he gets up from the bed and leaves the room. Minutes later he returns and gives me two pill bottles. “Here, the blue ones are for extreme pain, red ones are for slight.”

“whatever you suggest, my heads fucking killing me.” I groan as I open them up and swallow them down accidentally taking a few more than the container prescribes immediately regretting it. “Oh shit!” I yell, grabbing my head in pain, I fall off of the bed and land heavily on the floor. “Hey careful!” He yells running towards me, stopping at the side of the bed. I lift my head out of my hands and see a small trickle of blood dripping down from my head into my hands. “fuck, you’re bleeding. okay, we’re definitely getting you into the shower. come on.”

Dick takes my hand once again this time leading me into his bathroom, he turns on the shower taps, fiddling with them and testing the water to see if it’s not too hot or not too cold, letting me adjust it if I need to. “Come put your hand in the water. Is the temperature okay?”

“Yeah, it’s perfect thank you..”

“can you help me shower?” I ask, looking at him and receiving a nod in response to my question. i strip down until I’m fully nude. the cold air of the bathroom making my nipples hard. once Dick’s undressed we hop in the shower, he makes sure to wash all of the wounds and injuries from all of the fights I’ve been caught up in and around Gotham.

I look down at the shower floor as he washes my hair and back. I watch the excess water drop onto the floor and travel down into the drain to keep myself entertained, I see some blood joining the water. yeah I agree with you on DM not overshadowing TVL or really any other season tbh. Not to say they’re not important but given that the original source material (books) is pretty sparse regarding Daniel, Rolin has so much wriggle room with him vs other characters.

I do feel that some fans don’t like the pairing so they’re very resistant to seeing their relationship in any capacity - a bit odd but taste is subjective 🤷‍♀️ I’m a DM girlie through and through and I do think part of it stems from the fact that his story isn’t a fully fleshed out the way other characters are by virtue of Daniel being more of a modern presence and the fact that AR didn’t write about him much. To her credit however, as a “Daniel is my best friend, he’s my pal. he’s my homeboy. my rotten soldier. my sweet cheese. my good time boy.” fan, I do appreciate that she doesn’t just kill him off and gives us some inclination on his fate in the end and those gaps of nothing lets our imagination run a bit wild so it makes it a bit more fun as a fandom imo.

Given the lack of prominence of DM overall I am setting my expectations low so I’m not disappointed lol but being let down with the movie adaptations and DM not getting their fair shake I hope it’s a fully fleshed out as it possibly can be as a back burner type story line. Louis & Lestat, Armand & Daniel are my core four, stove top characters lol Loustat as the front burners and Devil’s Minion as the back burners 💀

talk shop tuesday! incredible coincidence - i wanted to ask you more about your dnd OCs, and you posted a new art piece with one of them! continuing the theme: could you tell more about your dnd OCs and how they came to be?

Ohhhh you have opened Pandora's Box my friend!! I could talk about this topic all day.

Basically there's two parts to this: my approach to DnD in general, and in-depth explanations of the characters. I'm going to put this under a Read More to save everyone's Dash.

Part One: Dungeons and Dragons

So the thing I love most about DnD (and other TTRPGs) is that it's a collaborative game. I'm not responsible for the entirety of the story, I bring my character to the table and everyone else brings their characters and between us, the DM, and the dice, we figure out where the story is going. I enjoy it so much more than trying to come up with everything on my own. And I love that people can surprise me!! @mothmansbigfatass and @ahawkmet (my irl friends and in most of the campaigns I play) can attest, apparently I'm a lot of fun to watch during revelations because I always have a big reaction.

So when making a dnd character, it's important for me to know 1. What the world we'll be playing in is like, and 2. What everyone else is doing. Again, it's a collaborative game, so I want to make sure that I'm playing nice with the DM's world. AND often the setting itself will give me an idea (see Ethan: the game is set at a community college. What's a college stereotype that would be fun to play?). Ideally, the character I make would have a really hard time being plopped into a different campaign and have it still make sense. Secondly, it's more fun for me to play a class that will fill out the party. For example, if we already have a cleric, I don't also need to play a religious character. Those story beats are covered by someone else, I don't want to be competing with another person for cool moments.

Once those two things are settled, character creation is determined by what seems fun to play and what would be interesting aesthetically. I like to keep the backstory light to see what happens as we start playing, and then I can fill it in bit by bit later. Sometimes that bites me in the ass, though (see Ethan: I didn't give him birth parents and then they were incredibly important to the plot). I tend to have a general idea about who they are and what they're like, and then I always get surprised by what they actually end up acting like once we start playing. It's fun for me to figure them out along the way!

The last thing I wanna say about DnD (for now) is that I love everyone else's characters just as much. I just draw mine more because, well, they're mine. I feel weird putting their guys in situations and guessing how they'd react because they aren't my little guys. I much prefer working collaboratively with the other players (like an RP thread) to just writing a story on my own.

Part Two: Ethan

Where to even start with my boy. A bunch of my work friends got together to start a DnD game, and I hadn't played with most of them before so I wasn't sure what to expect. I also did not think the game would last very long, since most campaigns tend to fizzle out after a few sessions. So I made kind of a joke character with extremely little backstory: He's a half-orc, since I hadn't played that race before, he's a bard who is the captain of the local community college's Improv Team, he's "the kind of guy to play wonderwall at a party but you're not mad about it", and I said he's adopted by two men, neither of whom were his biological parents, and he wasn't particularly interested in tracking down his bio parents. This last point is for two reasons: one, I was trying to avoid just duplicating a Dimension 20's Gorgug, a half-orc who was adopted by gnomes and spent the whole first season trying to find his dad; and two, I was pushing an "Adopted parents are not less than biological parents" agenda.

My DM took this personally (affectionate). First session, I was given a clue about his birth parents' identities. From then on, Ethan was dragged kicking and screaming into being the unofficial main character of the campaign. His mom was one of our favorite NPCs, a kickass pirate with a truly tragic backstory who would always jump to help us out of a scrape. His biological dad was the human embodiment of Pride who had took on the form of Fantasy Harrison Ford and was an extremely famous actor in-world. Our BBEG was his uncle, the embodiment of Greed. Every plot point became very personal and it was a lot of fun. I also loved putting him through the wringer, so between me and the DM the poor guy couldn't catch a break.

Part of the dice telling the story, I rolled so bad all the time when I played Ethan. It didn't matter which dice I used, I just rolled really bad, which was not something that normally happened with me. So that was fun to incorporate into his character as we played-- he was insecure about his own abilities compared to the extremely powerful characters he was surrounded by (we had a 20 ft Earth Titan who was an extremely powerful Druid, Emeshka you will always be famous). So he became a more three-dimensional and actualized character the more we played.

He's extremely easy to put in situations and his character design is pretty solid, so I end up drawing him the most. My perfect little guy.

Part Three: Mina

After the campaign with Ethan wrapped up, we started a new one in a Cthulhu-inspired setting. My goal with making Mina was to do as close to a 180 as I could from Ethan. While Ethan was a friendly and charming but bad at most things, Mina is a competent and intelligent Druid who's blunt and overworked and doesn't quite know how to meaningfully engage with her party members (but she tries, bless her). Druid was one of the classes I hadn't played yet and I've been making my way through the list of available classes. The One-With-Nature stuff isn't super interesting to me as a player, but I found a homebrew subclass that was based more in Big Cities and as an Architecture Nerd that was much more my speed. Also, I hadn't played an Aasimar before, so that seemed like fun. From all that, I pulled together her whole deal: She was from a bloodline of guardian angels who were sent to protect different villages and towns, and she's gone from her mother's small town to being the guardian of a city of several million people and it's overwhelming. She's lonely and she's jaded and she's got severe Gifted Kid Syndrome and she's got her head on a swivel to make sure her party members are okay even if they don't like her very much and I love her.

I didn't give her a lot of tragic backstory because there are a lot of us playing and I wanted to have a character who could push the plot forward with her actions, instead of having a "now let's stop and talk about my life!!" moment every session that seemed to happen with Ethan. Give everyone else some time to have cool moments, you know? And by GOD are there some cool moments. My fellow players are so good at making compelling characters. Ask @mothmansbigfatass about Nelly if you get a chance.

We're still playing this campaign, although we're nearing the end of it. There's still space for some big moments for Mina in the game, though I'm hoping our DM lets me save hers for last. She's the kind of character to make sure everyone else is okay before taking care of herself, so it feels appropriate. I'm excited to see where Mina ends up. She's definitely a character I'll go back and write/draw a lot afterwards, though. Part of being in a group this size means there's a lot of stuff that just won't get covered. I'll have a lot of material to play with for my own work once we get to the next campaign.

Part Four: Jess

Jess is a character that isn't from DnD but is a TTRPG character of mine, and I like her so I'm going to talk about her too. Jess is a cautionary tale in Knowing Your Audience.

Jess is from a different group of players than Ethan and Mina. Our DM for that game is notorious for wanting to give us Big, Shonen-Style fight scenes and an insane level of power creep. Character interactions are fine, but his true passion is making us look like Goku.

Jess was... not built to look like Goku. In this world you could identify different types of magic users by their focus, and I wanted her whole schtick to be about deception. She looked like a wizard when she was actually a monk, she looked like a dumb blonde girl when she was extremely smart and good at stealing things, she's a dancer but her primary fighting style was based on capoeira, etc. Also part of why Jess sticks with me as a favorite character is the way I had her powers work was so fun and visually interesting that I haven't been able to shake it. Basically her superpower was that she could snatch bits of other people's powers and use them herself, and you could tell which ones she had because they would fill out spectral stained glass wings with specific colors.

Jess was (and still is, frankly) too complicated for the game our DM wanted to run. Immediately any hope of her being a chronic liar was dashed as her powers did not manifest in a way that could possibly pass off as being a wizard. So instead of being sneaky, Jess became very angry. She was quick to point out injustices in the world we were in. She beat up creeps, she yelled at bigots, she stole powers from macho superheroes trying to one-up her. She had to get a lot less complicated for the story we were in, but the complicated version of her still lives in my head and I like to see what she's up to from time to time.

(I don't think I have anything tagged for Jess, unfortunately)

TL; DR:

TTRPG characters are fun because they let me do my favorite thing creatively, which is bounce ideas off of other people. I typically design them based on the setting, party needs, character tropes that I think are interesting, and just general vibes. Most importantly, though, I don't have a fleshed out character without the input of the other players.

Yosuke is a college first year and has had terrible luck doing the whole fresh start, make lots of friends (and get tons of babes) so far.... so while he doesn't like his suitemate Kubo too much, when Kubo wheedles him to join him for some dorm board game thing (so he doesn't look like too much like a creep going alone; and "it's not like YOU've got any plans on a Friday night, Hanamura") to get close to Yuki-chan- "and there are other hotties there!!" board game thing was actually a DnD session a couple of other first years are trying to put together. also in attendance are: Souji (the dm), Yukiko and Chie (they're already friends but don't know the rest of the group), Kanji, Naoto (Rise is there briefly (she's Naoto's girlfriend); she won't be joining but she wanted to steal Souji's cooking and catch up a little as she, Naoto and Souji are already friends- Naoto is the one to help convince Souji to put together this DnD recruitment, actually. Rise's very busy but she'll appear on occasion throughout the campaign when Souji begs her to play a dramatic bit parts for NPCs) and Ai just cos I feel like other people than the IT should join for a lil bit (she will make an excuse 20 minutes in "ohhhh something came up I'll be right back." she doesn't.) Mitsuo will not be returning after the first session after Yukiko flatly turns him down. Teddie is back home with Yosuke's parents since he's not college age yet and won't be a part of this at all, probably

first session is a little messy (the enthusiasm levels vary wildly among the players) but what hooks Yosuke and gets him to come back again is one of his off the wall ideas in combat actually worked and won them the battle and the dopamine he got from that is unmatched

what's the campaign look like: UHHHHHH i don't know but I have the vague idea it would somewhat mirror the events of p4- so instead of some world ending adventuring maybe the gang uncovers a serial murder plot? but more fantasy. and maybe the murderer's story is somehow tied to the NPC that Yosuke eventually falls in love with idk

Naoto already had their character planned out beforehand: an elf ranger ♂ (Souji had to talk them down from going into some super specific off-book combo to not scare off the newbies that hopefully would join). Yukiko, Chie, and Kanji had all actually read the recruitment flyer for this event so had a vague idea of their characters but haven't played a ttrpg before so just went with what appealed to them rather then how they play. Yukiko: tiefling warlock (and after she learned Naoto is x-gender she thought that sounded fun and made her character x-gender as well; Naoto thinks maybe they're being mocked but it's genuine on Yukiko's part). Chie: human monk ♀. Kanji: halfling cleric ♀. Yosuke had no idea what he was getting into so he's just going for what's Coolest. he considered being a super yolked warrior but nah... not even in make believe. But he could be an awesome stealthy ninja!! So he chooses rogue. as for race, he's not going to be an elf that's basically like being a fairy, right, and he's not... but he thinks they get cool bonus powers or something so he'll go with half-elf.

(Ai tried to be an elf princess but Souji gently maneuvered her to elf druid. Kubo went with the first things that caught his eye: dragonborn barbarian)

as for names, only Naoto came up with one already (Erawin <deeply into western high fantasy>); the rest of the gang workshops names at the table:

Yosuke: Jira (i'm not creative what do u want from me .)

Chie<sweating, desperately trying not to say her literal first thought > : her name is……uhhh… <gives up> Lee…

Yukiko just tries vague grunts to turn into a name (“Grgk!” “no” “Aaaht!” “no” “ERP!” “sounds like a belch” <yukiko laugh > “is that a name?? er- no” “Hrk!” “OKAY YES HRK YOU CAN BE HRK”)

Kanji: Usagi (it is for the reason you're thinking)

anyway the main meat of the au is an NPC appearing and then reoccurring throughout the campaign that Yosuke's character forms a natural rapport with... Souji picks up on this and fleshes out the NPC beyond what was a throw away background character. the gang try to do their DnD sessions every week for at least a couple hours, but it still takes them weeks and weeks to get through what Souji planned. since it's so gradual, Yosuke doesn't notice when their characters' banter turned from playful to outright flirtatious...

and he swears he's not like THAT but he can't help getting so genuinely upset when he dies* in Jira's arms and Yosuke can't separate character from person when he hears Souji's voice tells him before he dies that he- he loves--
