Thinking about some of the meta I've seen about the flight of the Noldor (and I'm not vagueing anyone, I've seen this kinda thing a few times and from folks I don't follow, so they've already trickled out of my head, sorry, bit it's not personal)--ANYWAY. The thing is that there's an underlying assumption that the noldor should have trusted the valar, because the Valar told them that the Oath couldn't be fulfilled and that they couldn't win against Morgoth, and that was ultimately proven correct.

But like. The thing is. The Valar had just proven to be incredibly fallible.

The wonderful Light that drew the elves on to Valinor? That they built their lives around? That's gone. And it's gone because the valar just very publicly screwed up. It's gone because the Valar released Melkor, and fucking told the elves that he was trustworthy, and they were extremely wrong. The Trees are dead because they couldn't bring Melkor back into custody in a timely manner. None of this inspires confidence in their ability to deal with Melkor in the future.

Finwe is dead because the Valar were wrong.

Valinor has been proven to be unsafe because the valar were wrong.

(Arguably the kinslaying at Alqualonde is further proof that the Valar can't keep Aman safe against elves, let alone one of their own number.)

Feanor called it on Melkor. Feanor was proven right to build fortifications, even in Aman. Feanor was proven right to make back-ups of the Light, even if it was stolen. (Just because he wasn't going to hand them over for Yavanna to crack like eggs doesn't mean they wouldn't have been put to good use.) Feanor has been trying to leave Aman for a long time, and right at that crisis point he looks like a great bet. It would have looked like he'd seen it all coming, and that the Valar had invited disaster into their own home.

Hindsight is 20/20, and during the Darkening Feanor looks like a damn oracle. Why would they believe the Valar at that moment? The Valar have just lost an INCREDIBLE amount of face and authority. Trust is very easy to break and very difficult to rebuild.

I HAVE considered making a Fanadventure in the past, but noooo way, I don’t have a team of people and it’d be way too much work for a side project X3. I would love to get involved in something big and Homestuck-y, but as a hobby, running four different blogs and doing art keeps me busy enough as is. I’m in actual pain and need a distraction but can’t seem to write anything coherent so I am just gonna babble about Stargate for a bit, okay? Okay

In hindsight I’ve become increasingly annoyed about how in Stargate, the alien species around humans just up and... conveniently die. Tollans get wiped out by the Goa’uld. Abydonians get wiped out. The Jaffa are turned into Basically Humans and it’s only matter of time before they lose their pouches and Tretonin usage leads to them not even needing Goa’ulds. The Tok’ra are basically dying from the moment they’re met, and Egeria dies pretty much the moment she’s met, so that’s that for the whole species. Replicators weren’t really a species but they’re gone, pretty much.  Asgard do a society-suicide. Goa’uld are basically on their way out towards the end.  And on Stargate Atlantis side, you got people dying left, right, centre. And that’s without getting into the series of mass genocides in seasons 9 and 10 of Stargate. Whole planets just - gone. 

It’s just a trend I don’t really like all that much. It’s just got a unpleasant implications, Humans Inheriting the Galaxy and all. Half of the known universe who know about Earth must be freaking terrified of these people, and how so many of their enemies AND allies just conveniently die around them. Might be why the lucky races that did not suffer a convenient plot demanded death (nox, Serrakin, etc) stayed mostly the hell away from humans and formed no lasting alliances. It’s basically a death sentence. 

Humanity, fuck yeah.

I am on multiple levels sad about Egeria, and not least of all which is the fact that Egeria led to Tretonin led to Jaffa Basically Becoming Humans Eventually. I mean yeah they still got culture and tradition and slightly stronger mojo than regular old humans, but give it ten, fifteen generations, and i doubt it stays that way.

Imagine if Egeria had lived and Tretonin couldn’t be magically made out of kitchen ingredients, will always require the genocide of entire species of Goa’uld to produce at level required to sustain entire Jaffa population. That’s just not sustainable. Well maybe if they started farming Goa’ulds for it, but that’s iffy on so many levels and let’s just not get there.

Instead, Egeria lives to produce more young, intelligent full on Tok’ra young. It’s said in stargate somewhere that before the habit of incubating Tok’ra young in Jaffa, there was a huge rate of losses with blending - something like half of every blending went badly, caused the death of both host and Goa’uld? Growing up in human body acclimates Goa’uld to blending, which I assume is the same for Tok’ra.

So Tok’ra have young, they want their young to survive and prosper, want to build up a species of ethical like minded creatures. So, maybe alliance with the free Jaffa - who need symbiotes anyway because Tretonin is evil and unethical.

It wouldn’t be easy, it wouldn’t be simple, there would be whole lot of cultural and social conflict there. Tok’ra would hard time trusting Jaffa with their young, Jaffa would fear, rightfully so, that they just changed the dependency of the Goa’uld to the dependency of the Tok’ra, it would be glorious drama all around. And maybe somewhere in the middle of it, there would be culture and new traditions, maybe some Jaffa would find solace in sheltering this precious Tok’ra within them - maybe they would even see it as a reason not to standing direct line of fire so damn often. Maybe Tok’ra would seek out the strongest, the wisest, the most trustworthy Jaffa for this and it would become point of respect for both, a point of delicate, difficult trust and just...

Imagine the culture that would develop. new traditions, new treaties, new interesting stuff.

But nah, Egeria died and Tretonin fixes everything, and Tok’ra will eventually die out. Everyone go home.

(Something along the lines of this is what I envisioned for Cohabitation but who even knows if it will get to that point. Doubt it. Maybe one day.)

I wish Atlantis would’ve become multicultural thing. Not just multinational, earth people wise, but just... i wish they would’ve taken in people. That was what i thought it was heading towards, when i saw the first episode for the first time. They had such a welcoming start - they took in the Athosians, the episode ended with everyone having a gathering on a balcony, it seemed like the perfect start for all sort of cultural stuff.

I thought it would develop from there on with Atlanteans taking in more and more refugees in wake of Wraith completely ransacking the galaxy - building Atlantis into this hub of at least a dozen Pegasus cultures, forming into councils, dealing with politics and society clashes and stuff like that. It’s a city the size of Manhattan, right, I assume it can take few hundred thousand, if not million, people? There’s definitely more space than is taken by the few hundred people from earth - every other episode they explore some unexplored section of the city. There’s space.

I just wanted to see trading days and cultural festivals and religious leaders getting into clashes about converting people of culture X into the belief systems of culture Y. I wanted to see a bazaar of like dozens and dozens of stalls in some great glass building, like enormous greenhouse or something and just...

Instead it became another Humanity Fuck Yeah thing and even Athosians were basically wiped out. :(
