My TL;DR of the Ember and Randall bonus is:

• Rhys is objectively correct in his stance and for once I agree with him and his reasoning. Nesta pretty much gambled the safety of their entire world on a girl she knew for barely days and who offered no assurance she could take down the Asteri. People have all the right in the world to be mad at her.

• That said, the way he handled that situation was abysmal. I get the anger, but after the first outburst, it's clear his dislike of Nesta is fueling his reaction and that's not cool and it's off-putting, even if his reasons are sound.

• Nesta Archeron, THE LEGEND THAT YOU ARE, STANDING UP TO THIS. Absolutely BOSS.

• Ember Quinlan, THE LEGEND THAT YOU ARE, STANDING UP TO THIS. Absolutely MOTHER.

• Feyre Archeron, THE LEGEND THAT YOU ARE, STANDING UP TO THIS. Absolutely QUEEN. But she could have been so on-page and I'm salty she wasn't :)))))

• Fuck Cassian for not standing up for his mate. You had one job and you fucked it up ♥. I'm more angry at him on Nesta's behalf than I'm Rhys because HE'S SUPPOSED TO BE ON NESTA'S SIDE.

My gripe with Spark is that to have a proper redemption arc you have to balance the things they did to need redemption with the things they need to do to atone. And there's a line in which a character will have gone too far to be granted forgiveness.

Atonement is a major theme in Halo. Mendicant Bias' singular directive after his rampancy is atonement. The Librarian locks the Didact in his cryptum with the same directive. Halsey is trying, in her way, to atone for the Spartan Program by allowing herself to be ONIs scapegoat while continuing to cooperate with the UNSC to protect her Spartans. The Halo universe as we know it ultimately turns with the Librarian's long-planning, which is fueled by a desire to atone for robbing humanity of the Mantle and destroying the Precursors. And the list goes on and on. Everyone is very sorry.

We can forgive a character like Thel because I love him.

Jk, we can actually forgive him because his character has done the work to realize he was wrong. He was deceived, so it's easier to sympathize with him, and now, everything he does is to atone. He feels guilty (because he is guilty), and always will.

This is all setting aside the fact that from a storytelling perspective, it's easier to stomach bad actions that happen off-screen or are hard to conceptualize (how many of us can actually wrap our minds around what it means to kill a billion people?)

That being said, if he killed Master Chief, we wouldn't forgive him. We are too invested in Chief, and it would disrupt the scale of bad thing vs atonement. That bad thing would weigh too much to tip it back.

Spark can't come back from Johnson, because his "atonement" is just an extension of the Librarian's plan. He killed Johnson because, despite agreeing with Flood containment protocols, he didn't want to lose another Halo. That's it. He killed a beloved character because he was driven by an unreasonable attachment (and insanity FINE) to his Halo ring. And he dared to do it where we could see him.

And then he's not really sorry! He regrets that it had to be this way, while continuing to believe it had to be this way. He is a manipulator (like the Librarian is a manipulator, oh the layers) and cannot shake the mindset that he serves a greater purpose than any one human could comprehend.

Make no mistake, I am not advocating for Spark's character to change. I understand his character. It is not a bad thing that I can't forgive him. That's called having flawed and complicated characters. He's also not human (well. I mean. he is. but he's not. but he is. he's not though) so we can't really impute a human's concept of guilt onto him.

What I am saying is that, despite his character's capacity for change, and turning a new leaf, so to speak, he hasn't done the work to forgive him.

Spark's story is a tragedy, but its not a redemption arc.

Big fan of sun motifs in characters not necessarily being about positivity and happiness and how they're so " bright and warm" but instead being about fucking brutal they are.

Radiant. A FORCE of nature that will turn you to ash. That warmth that burns so hot it feels like ice. Piercing yellow and red and white. A character being a Sun because you cannot challenge a Sun without burning alive or taking everything down with them if victorious.
