A burkini is a type of full-body swimsuit, a fusion of "burka" (a loose garment worn by some Muslim women in public) and "bikini". As reported by NPR, the burkini aligns swimwear with Islamic principles, adhering to the Quran's guidance for women to dress modestly.

In an interview with The National, Erica explained that choosing to wear a burkini was a reflection of her deep respect for her culture. At 24 years old, Erica also holds the distinction of being the first-ever participant from Pakistan in the pageant. Lecci in French Corsica bans burkinis
A town on the French Mediterranean island of Corsica has banned the wearing of burkinis on its beaches, French media reported.
Lecci Mayor Don Georges Gianni announced the ban on Wednesday. The ban, which will be in place until September 30, applies to anyone who does not wear “appropriate clothing” in accordance with the principles of secularism. The decision claims that religious dress could lead to conflicts on beaches.
The decision also states that “while France and places of worship could be targets of terrorist attacks, beachwear denoting religious affiliation could pose a risk to public order (e.g. crowding or fights) and these risks must be prevented,” emphasising the tense situation in the world.
The prefecture of Corsica intends to review the decision to make sure it complies with French law. The burkini ban was lifted last year.
Last year, Mandelieu-La-Napoule on France’s Côte d’Azur banned the wearing of burkinis on its beaches from June 15 to August 31. The French League of Human Rights challenged the ban in Nice’s administrative court, but the court upheld it in July, citing public order concerns.
The group then appealed to the Council of State, which ruled on July 17 that the ban violated individual rights, including freedom of movement, conscience and personal liberty, and overturned it.
Burkinis are swimming costumes that cover most of the body in accordance with Muslim modesty rules, but can be worn by women of any religious affiliation.

Looking good and feeling great in Plus Size Active Wear
In recent years, the body positivity movement has gained significant momentum, prompting the fashion industry to take a long-overdue step towards inclusivity. One sector that has experienced remarkable growth and acceptance is plus-size exercise wear for women. With more women embracing fitness to prioritize their health and well-being, the demand for activewear that caters to all body types has soared. This article delves into the increasing popularity of plus-size exercise wear, its impact on women's empowerment, and how the industry has adapted to embrace diversity and inclusivity.
The body positivity movement, which advocates for self-acceptance and appreciation of all body shapes and sizes, has been a driving force behind the change in the activewear industry. Historically, fitness apparel brands tended to showcase unrealistic beauty standards through their marketing campaigns and size offerings. However, as more women started to reject these narrow beauty ideals and embrace their bodies as they are, the demand for inclusive activewear options grew significantly.
A new wave of body-inclusive activewear brands has emerged, challenging the status quo and setting new standards for representation in the fitness industry. These brands understand that women come in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and proportions and aim to empower all individuals to feel comfortable and confident during their exercise routines.
These forward-thinking brands design plus-size exercise wear using advanced fabric technology, ensuring that their apparel provides optimal support, breathability, and flexibility. Additionally, they have actively involved plus-size athletes and influencers in their marketing campaigns to promote body diversity and authenticity.
Gone are the days when plus-size exercise wear was limited to drab, ill-fitting garments. As inclusivity takes centre stage, brands have recognized the importance of combining functionality with fashionable designs. Today, women can choose from a wide array of stylish activewear pieces that not only suit their unique body shapes but also reflect their personal style.
Leggings, sports bras, tank tops, swimwear, leggings, hoodies tops and more, are now available in vibrant colours, patterns, and prints, giving plus-size women the opportunity to express themselves while breaking a sweat. The inclusion of moisture-wicking fabrics and compression features further enhances the functionality of these garments, catering to the specific needs of active women.
The availability of plus-size exercise wear has transcended the boundaries of mere fashion; it has become a catalyst for empowerment. Many women who once felt excluded from fitness spaces due to the lack of suitable activewear now feel empowered to pursue their fitness goals with confidence.
Moreover, the representation of diverse body types in promotional material and social media campaigns has shattered unrealistic beauty ideals, inspiring women to focus on health, fitness, and overall well-being, rather than conforming to societal pressures.
While the rise of plus-size exercise wear marks significant progress towards inclusivity, the journey is far from over. The industry must continue to evolve, listening to the diverse voices of consumers and further expanding their size ranges to accommodate even more women.
Additionally, fitness spaces, including gyms and studios, should work towards creating an environment that welcomes individuals of all shapes and sizes, fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance. By doing so, they can ensure that the body positivity movement thrives, making fitness accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
The emergence of plus-size exercise wear for women reflects the shifting landscape of the fashion and fitness industries. It highlights the power of the body positivity movement in challenging conventional norms and pushing for inclusivity. As more women of all sizes and shapes embrace their bodies and prioritize their health, the demand for body-inclusive activewear will undoubtedly continue to grow, prompting further positive changes in the industry. Ultimately, it is a testament to the fact that beauty, strength, and confidence come in all sizes. Walking in the any fitness setting as a plus size woman can be daunting especially for new starters, Stylish plus-size wear goes a long way to offer that extra layer of self-confidence and feel-good factor.

I’m fat and for not-fat related reasons I don’t like showing skin. Completely covered from neck to ankles and wrists most days. A t-shirt in the summer is the closest thing to bowing to the heart I ever do.
I’d like to swim but full cover swimsuits are never available for non-standard sizes and swimming in my clothes would ruin them with all the chlorine in a pool or salt in the sea.
Like, making sure fat folk never show up at the pool is a many faceted pile of social shit that attacks from all sides.
It's honestly such a shame that we've made such a huge thing out of swimming and swimsuits and looking good in swimsuits and fat people not looking good in swimsuits. Swimming is actually the perfect exercise for fat people because it puts zero pressure on the joints, which is a much bigger concern for us than it is for skinny people, and lets you exercise basically every muscle group without straining too much and risking injury. Yet somehow this is one of the least accessible exercises to fat people due to nothing more than a culture of body shaming. The work to unlearn all the shame to be comfortable in a bathing suit in front of strangers is huge even for conventionally attractive people, but I could probably count on one hand the number of fat people I've met who were confident enough to get in a bathing suit and go swimming in public.
And what is the exercise that somehow everyone thinks they should do instead? Jogging. It's more accessible, sure, it's easy and costs nothing to go outside and run. But I need you to understand telling a fat person to go running is basically telling them to go destroy their knees. Not to mention it's probably one of the most physically uncomfortable exercises to do when you have a body that jiggles even with compression garments.
Imagine a world where everyone had the ability and equal access to whatever exercise fit them best and helped them be happy and healthiest. Imagine a world where fat people go swimming.

Of course, the burkini ban is messed up on grounds of religious freedom and racial discrimination. But also
Under any other circumstances, people would be HORRIFIED at a government mandate that women have to show a certain amount of skin. Like. That’s fucking dystopian, and the absolute opposite of feminism. If a government tried to pass a law that all women had to wear tube tops and miniskirts to go outside, people would rightfully be up in arms demanding blood
But because it’s targeting a marginalized religious group, many folks are lauding the blatant forced sexualization of women. Appalling
(apparently the ban also outlaws things like sun – protecting bathing suits if they cover too much skin. Which like. Yes, let’s give everyone skin cancer just so we can spite a religion we’ve decided to hate. Sounds like a good plan </s>)
