[Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess Special Bunraku Performance] by Capcom & National Bunraku Theatre.

Capcom chose to promote their coming video game (demo here) via calls to traditional arts and crafts - like here bunraku puppets theater.

For this performance, Capcom commisionned famous puppeteer Kanjuro Kiritake to create the play, and main characters (The Maiden and Soh) puppets were crafted using traditional techniques.

(Capcom marketing team knows their targets, they even held an Okami event?!)

This one is for @gt-rxn who has a fic request in my ask box for Hartnett's character, 'The Drifter', from Bunraku (which I have only bounced around and not really watched yet, but...he's hot, whatever, I'll watch it before I write it, of course.) I have only now given Kunitsu-Gami the attention that it deserves. Its patent uniqueness extends even to the underlying creative process, as so many of its visual elements originate from meticulously sculpted miniatures and live special effects, as are shown in this clip. Such a marriage between digital design and craftsmanship is unusual these days, particularly in that it is motivated by the ambition to imbue a game with elements from reality in order to confer it a distinct quality that rises above the generic source-available engine graphics libraries.

This is further expanded on by the exquisite theatrical prelude resulting from a collaboration between Capcom and the National Bunraku Theatre in Osaka. Combining the ancient arts of puppetry (ningyō), chanting and shamisen playing (jōruri), it stands as a rare example of videogame storytelling that exceeds the boundaries of the digital by reconnecting with the traditions of old.

Such initiatives, while bound to be overlooked by most, constitute a clear example of what Japanese game design can still attain, when adequately supported by the structure, technology and financial backing of the remaining major studios. I wholeheartedly applaud Capcom for endorsing this project and for bringing it to the world.
