Bully Sticks vs Rawhide Chews

While I was debating on which items to get, a fellow customer asked my opinion on which was better: the bully stick or the rawhide? She saw I had both in my cart.
Maybe it’s just me, but I love chatting with fellow dog lovers, so I was happy to help.
She had a young Bull Mastiff with her, so she said she was looking for something that would keep him occupied but was also safe to give him.
I had no doubt that the big guy was an aggressive chewer!
I have very diligent and focused chewers but nothing like the jaws on this guy.
There was a large variety of bully sticks and rawhides to choose from, so we were able to find a few things that would likely work for her boy.
As for my household, we keep both.
How I Use Bully Sticks and Rawhides
I use rawhides more as more of a short-term distraction.

An example of this is:
When we have company over, we give the dogs a rawhide bone to occupy them, so friends and family can come in without being bowled over.
The reason I say short term distraction is because once everyone is settled we take the bones away.
Because rawhide chews are not a high value treat in our house, it is an easy one to get back from the dogs.
Though I buy rawhides for my dogs, I am particular as to how long they can be chewed on, since I know they can be choking hazards or cause intestinal obstructions.
We use the bully sticks for longer distractions or just as fun treats for the dogs.
They all love them, and I know my dogs can’t bite pieces off, so I worry less about them being choking hazards.
I purchase the larger ones since I take them away as soon as the sticks are small enough for the dog to fit the whole bully stick in their mouth.

What is this blog about?
As I begin my blog I would like to introduce myself and outline a little bit about what I hope to accomplish here. This is a blog about eating disorders- specifically anorexia nervosa but some content will pertain to bulimia and other types of relationships with food. Many of us struggle everyday to have a normal, healthy relationship with food that many people on the outside don’t understand. I am not here to preach recovery or tell you to get over your skull crushing fear of calories. I know its not as easy as that...at least it isn't for me. I understand the obsession with counting and measuring everything- controlling as much of life as possible. I also know the pursuit of losing weight or becoming “perfect” is a lonely and painful journey and it can get out of hand quicker than most of us would like to admit. Though I am not a recovered individual, and I am actively trying to reach a goal weight, this blog will focus on only positive content (at least as positive as an eating disorder can be...)

I am simply sharing my thoughts and tricks for those who already have a problem and pray that we find the strength to recover someday. This blog is for relative safety- yes, that is an oxymoron.

Physiology talks: I am a medical student (I know, life is full of paradoxes) and giant nerd. I love to educate about how the body works on a chemical level and use that knowledge to accelerate weight loss while staying alive. Nothing about an eating disorder is healthy, but at least if you understand what you are doing to your body you can do it as “safe” as possible. Knowledge is power after all.
Myth busting: Debunking popular or common “anna myths” about weight loss. Let's be real, there is so much misinformation out there.
Mid week motivation: I’m not entirely sure what this will entail yet. I want to keep things safe and positive for the most part so I haven't decided if thinspo will have a place here or not.
Low calorie Recipes: We struggle to eat. period. It causes anxiety and more drama than it should. Though most of us hardly eat, we still do have to eat. Having healthy, low calorie recipes that include our favorite “safe foods” or change our perception of food is comforting and helps us stay within our calorie limits. After all, our goal is to be thin, not dead.
Mental health talks: This is an opportunity to vent if we need to, support one another and develop ourselves as genuine human beings. Being thin is cool and all but your personality will always be the most beautiful thing about you! Let’s not forget to work on that personal growth. I want this to be a safe space for everyone, just as it is for me.
Productivity tips and tricks: It’s so much easier to feel good about yourself and cope with your eating disorder when life is organized and productive. Lets combat depression, lack of motivation and suicidal thoughts- they have no place here.

10 Recovery Tips 😊
Get rid of any apps, books and posters related to eating, dieting, fitness, etc. Anything that mentions calories. Instead, fill up your bookcase with colouring books, puzzle books and recovery books and stick positive affirmations around the house.
Know that the disorder is not about food. It’s about control), hence the disorder is a cousin of other conditions like OCD and OCPD. Be sure to ignore any preoccupations you have about other aspects of the concept and tell yourself that you’re in control, but that it has nothing to do with food and that the thoughts are just bullies.
Take up hobbies. Sewing, knitting, colouring, origami, reading, listening to music- anything unrelated to exercise (for the moment).
Wear oversized, comfy clothes and quit using the scale. Because your stomach will likely be swollen, you will experience a small amount of bloating as you recover, so it’s best to wear cosy clothes, and remember that it’s only a temporary thing.
Write or read about how much better it will be when you’re recovered. Watch out for toxic blogs that contain contrasting content, e.g. positivity one day and thinspo the next.
Create a fun meal plan. It can be themed, e.g. blue food day, Mexican food day, Harry Potter food day. Make sure it contains all the calories and vitamins you need to make a full recovery!
Don’t scold yourself for binging. Binging is your body’s response to being deprived of proper food. Try to adjust your meal plan to make sure it’s keeping you satisfied.
Try eating your fear food. It may sound like a big step, but eating food you used to love is a great move forward. If you feel uncomfortable, you can get a friend to make sure you don’t try and purge it.
Fake it ‘til you make it. Even if you have mixed emotions, pretend that you are the most pro-recovery person out there.
Remember that the ED is not a part of you. It does not define you or shape you in any way. It is a monster and a bully and its “goals” are not yours.

“This is controversial, as some dentists and oral surgeons recommend these treats to remove tartar, and while others have noted them to cause tooth fractures,” says Wiedmeyer.

Regardless of their safety, canine completely loves bully sticks, says Heinze. “They’re super popular–probably one of the most popular dogs treats on the market.”

Positive Body Image & Self Love
It isn’t easy for me to admit to this but as an early teenager I started to struggle with having confidence and a positive body image. It was when I started high school, my social life had multiplied from a small number of kids in primary school to numerous of kids in a high school, this was when I started to notice differences between me and the other girls. At the age of just starting secondary school, I shouldn’t have been noticing my appearance, staring into the mirror with judgemental stares and studying every inch of my body, and hating it. In school I was never able to concentrate on my work I would always find myself getting distracted and compare my body and looks to the girls that were around me. I felt inferior as a person and I would get so upset that I didn’t have what they had. I saw the other girls to be flawless and perfect and it didn’t matter how different they were, so why did I find it so difficult to embrace and think I was flawless myself? In primary school, then into my first years of high school I struggled with a weight problem I was really underweight (at the time I never even noticed or realised it as being anorexic)
I have a rare condition called Golden Har Syndrome because of this I was always different to the other girls. I was often in and out of hospitals having operations and cosmetic surgery, I was a victim of bullying but not a lot (my opinion to this was that I had a twin brother, he was ‘normal’ he didn’t have any facial deformities or disabilities) he was known to stick up to my bullies and it would soon stop. As my body was changing I thought prior to my operations I would finally feel content in my own body… this wasn’t the case. I soon started to develop social anxieties anytime I didn’t feel comfortable in my clothing. As I got older, my body changed, my hair grew longer, my weight got heavier and my health got better. I wish I could say I instantly felt confident but that just wasn’t the case at all. I continued to see myself as that girl who was too different and developed a horrible relationship with food. It felt like what I looked like and my weight were always on my mind no matter what I did, it completely consumed me.
I was constantly researching food, how many calories I was consuming, diets, workout plans… literally anything! I became obsessed with finding the perfect solution and the perfect work out and I thought that would solve all my problems. I had this silly idea that if I did the diets, the workouts and had the perfect body then I would somehow instantly be happy and feel content with myself… but here’s the thing, looking a certain way will never bring you true happiness. You must find the happiness first. Within the last few years I have worked on to mend my relationship with food and with myself. I’ve learned how to understand what my body wants and needs and how to properly take care of it. Our bodies do so much for us, it isn’t fair to abuse our bodies with our negative thoughts and words.
I’m not saying there is anything wrong with wanting to improve yourself in any way you see fit but self-love shouldn’t dependant on having your ideal physical appearance. You must get your mind right and your body will follow. If you only focus on waiting to love yourself until you get to your goal appearance, I promise you that you will never reach it. You will just always be finding more ‘imperfections’ and you will always be continuously unhappy about the way you look. The more you embrace your faults then I can guarantee you that you will be much happier. Use exercise to celebrate what your body can do and to be fit, but don’t use exercise to abuse and torture your body to alter your physical appearance. Exercise is something to help the body to keep fit, but if you develop an unhealthy obsession to exercising you will be doing more damage than good to your health.
Now here is the hard part for YOU and ME. It’s a challenge, for all of you to start loving yourself now and embracing every uniqueness that makes you, you. What is something about your appearance that you are constantly putting yourself down for? Got one? Now you are going to thank that part of your body for everything that it does for you. Show your body part some love, keep telling yourself these affirmations and soon it will sink in and teach you to stop being too hard on yourself and love yourself for who you are. I will do it too so here it goes…
The part of my body that I dislike I my belly…
I thank you that one day you will allow a baby to grow inside me.
I thank you that you for being soft – (our tummies are naturally soft) – feel your own, you’ll see what I mean.
I thank you for the jiggling fun – no matter how slim your belly is you can always jiggle to an extent – one of the pastimes I like is to jiggle my belly around – it’s strange, fun and honestly awesome. Forget twiddling your thumbs: jiggle your belly.
I thank you for being a pillow for someone I love – having someone rest on your belly is a sweet activity – you get snuggled – the other gets a pillow. Everything is right in the world.
I thank you for the belly kisses – belly kisses are something intimate – maybe because it’s the part of the body that doesn’t get a lot of air time – or maybe it’s because that you’re trusting someone enough to see that part of your body.
I thank you for giving a home to ALL the food that I eat – instead of feeling guilty for eating a cake or a brownie – just be glad you could enjoy eating that brownie in the first place.
Everyone is different – some bellies are flat, some over-hang, some have abs of steel, others are a perfect hourglass. But their uniqueness is always interesting and is worth taking a moment to appreciate.

10 Filling Foods for Steady Weight Loss
I have a love/hate relationship with list articles.
The content is easy to digest (and easy to create), but can lack “flavor” and seem a little sterile at times.
So…
I’ll create a list article based on this imaginary scenario:
“You want to lose weight and can only add 10 different foods to your shopping cart. Which foods do you choose and why?”
My choices are slanted towards filling foods.
In 1995 a study tested 38 different foods for how filling they were per 240 calorie serving. Here’s the satiety index (opens in new window) of these 38 foods.
Most of the foods that made my list score high.
…but depending upon your tastes, you will probably have a slightly different list of 10.
Here’s my list in no particular order.
1. Boneless Chicken Breasts
In my opinion it’s hard to beat the flexibility of boneless skinless chicken breasts as a protein source.
A lot of people favor steak over chicken.
…especially since the Paleo movement.
Here’s where chicken breasts come out ahead.
150 grams of protein from chicken breasts is about 700 calories.
150 grams of protein from steak is closer to 1,300 calories.
I’m NOT saying that beef is unhealthy.
I get it.
…but for weight loss, chicken breasts make it easier to create a calorie deficit.
Beef gives a lot less wiggle room for extra calories in your diet.
May I suggest this bass guitar focused 80’s synth-pop song to go along with your boneless chicken breast?

2. Eggs
Eggs are a cheap and flexible protein source.
I typically keep a carton or two in my fridge.
My bachelor cooking skills include endless variations of Huevos Rancheros.
Here’s the recipe:
4-5 eggs
Literally ANY leftover food
A bunch of salsa on top
Heat a large pan on medium, throw in some butter. Mix in any random leftovers along with the eggs.
Serve on a plate and drench with salsa.
Note: I realize that this isn’t legitimate Huevos Rancheros, it just makes my strange egg and salsa concoction sound MUCH fancier than what it is.
3. Potatoes
Potatoes are a pretty badass food.
In fact…
I wrote an article about a while ago about The Potato Hack, which is a diet where you eat nothing but potatoes.
The low carb’ers aren’t fans of potatoes.
BUT
Per calorie potatoes are one of the most filling foods.
What I like to do is bake 5-6 Russet potatoes in the oven on Sunday night.
Throughout the week, I’ll pull one out of the fridge and slice up and fry in a pan of coconut oil to make fries to go along with my chicken breasts.
If I want to go a little more low-cal?
I’ll slice up the cooked potato and sprinkle with pepper, then broil in the oven for 15-20 minutes.
In my opinion, avoiding potatoes is a MISTAKE.

Yes, I realize two items are listed here.
Either will work for cooking.
I COULD get by with just one.
The most important thing to remember about fats is this:
Processed foods have an unhealthy ratio of OMEGA 6 fats.
Omega 6 fats aren’t unhealthy on their own…
It’s just that we are getting 10-20 times the amount nature intended if we eat a lot of processed foods.
If you cook with vegetable oil, you are adding to this problem.
Go with butter or coconut oil instead.
Note: If you can’t stand the taste of coconut, look for refined coconut oil. I assumed unrefined meant healthier… refined is just as healthy and has a higher smoke point (with very little flavor).
5. Bags of Frozen Vegetables | Salad
Why do I choose bags over fresh vegetables?
For me, there is less waste with frozen vegetables.
Half the time when I buy fresh, a lot of it goes bad before I get to it.
When they are fresh, it feels like the vegetables are pressuring me. “Cook us or we are going to die!”
Fresh Vegetable Bullying <— the struggle is real.
With frozen vegetables, a serving for me is half of a bag. I can eat half and leave the rest in the freezer.
Bags of salad are just about convenience.
I can dump a full bag into a large bowl and eat along with my dinner.
The chef highly recommends this MTV music video from 1983 to add a little flavor to your salad.

The pronunciation of this word irritates me.
ALMOST as irritating as the correct pronunciation of ORANGUTAN (they need to add a “G” to the end of this word).
I fully believe there is in alternate universe where this word is spelled ORANGUTANG.
I’m from that universe and somehow wound up here.
So why did quinoa get added to my list?
I’m a steamed rice addict.
I could easily eat 3,000 calories of steamed rice each and every day.
Quinoa is simply a slightly healthier alternative to steamed rice… and I have better self control with quinoa.
If steamed white rice was lower in calories, I’d eat it with every meal.
Maybe it IS low-cal in the alternate Orangutang Universe.
These poor animals just want their “G” back.
7. Greek Yogurt
I have a sweet tooth, and certain brands of Greek yogurt have a lot of protein per calorie.
I buy quart-sized containers of Dannon Light & Fit Greek Vanilla.
You get 30 grams of protein per 300 calories.
That is a great protein ratio for a snack.
8. Apples | Oranges
The state of Washington grows 58% of the apples consumed in the United States.
As a resident, I know apples.
You won’t get anything better than Organic Honeycrisp Apples.
I know I’m talking to an amatuer when some tells me Fuji apples are best.
If a Fuji is the BMW of apples, then Honeycrisps are a Bugatti.
They are a great diet food too.
A large apple is filling for being only about 100 calories.
Oranges are a solid choice as well.
(Cheaper than Honeycrisps and have a high satiety index.)
Honeycrisps are classy… like 80’s pumping bass mixed with piano.

9. Cottage Cheese
Cottage cheese is another solid protein source that is low in calories.
I buy the large quart-sized containers.
It is a slow digesting source of protein that makes it an ideal pre-bedtime snack.
A Honeycrisp apple and a cup or two of cottage cheese makes for a quick small meal, that can keep you full for quite a while.
I know I have SAID THIS BEFORE, but I’d stick to non-fat to keep the calories down.

Air Popcorn Makers became a huge thing in the late 70’s.
As a kid we’d stay up on Friday night to watch The Love Boat followed by Fantasy Island.
Pretty much everyone watched the exact same TV shows back then.
…and we all went nutty with the Air Popper.
Air popcorn is old-school, but a seriously effective diet food.
A ¼ cup of unpopped popcorn is only about 200 calories and fills up a large bowl when popped.
I like to put Frank’s RedHot or sriracha sauce on it now.
Air popcorn… the Blondie of diet food (ahead of it’s time and yellow).

Here’s why…

10 Filling Foods for Steady Weight Loss
I have a love/hate relationship with list articles.
