On March 2, she was gone. The Belize-flagged, British-owned bulk carrier Rubymar sank in the narrow water lane between the coasts of Yemen and Eritrea. The Rubymar was the first vessel that has been completely lost since the Houthis began their attacks on shipping in the Red Sea—and its demise, with 21,000 metric tons of ammonium phosphate sulfate fertilizer, spells ecological disaster. A similar substance—ammonium nitrate—caused the devastating explosion at the Port of Beirut in 2020. It had been stored there after being abandoned on a vessel and authorities intervened to prevent an environmental disaster.
Because the Houthis have no regard for the environment, there are likely to be more such disasters. Indeed, groups set on destruction could also decide to attack the carbon storage facilities now beginning to be built underneath the seabed.
For two weeks after being struck by a Houthi missile in the Red Sea, the Rubymar clung to life despite listing badly. The damage caused by the missile, though, was too severe. At 2:15 a.m. local time, the Rubymar disappeared into the depths of the Red Sea. The crew had already been rescued by another merchant vessel that had come to the Rubymar’s aid, but there was no way anyone could remove its toxic cargo.
The ship’s owner had tried to get it towed to the Port of Aden—where Yemen’s internationally recognized government is based—and to Djibouti and Saudi Arabia, but citing the environmental risk posed by the ammonium phosphate sulfate, all three nations refused to receive it.
Now enormous quantities of a hazardous substance are about to spread into the Red Sea. IGAD, a trade bloc comprising countries in the Nile Valley and the Horn of Africa, points out that the Rubymar’s fertilizer cargo and leaking fuel “could devastate marine life and destroy coral reefs, sea life and jeopardize hundreds of thousands of jobs in the fishing industry as well as cut littoral states off from supplies of food and fuel.”
Not even shipping’s option of last resort, salvage companies, seems available. “The salvage companies that normally recover vessels are reluctant to go in,” said Cormac Mc Garry, a maritime expert with intelligence firm Control Risks. That’s because salvage ships and crews, too, risk being targeted by Houthi missiles. “If a salvage company knows it’s likely to be targeted, it will hesitate to take on the task. It has a duty of care for its crew,” said Svein Ringbakken, the managing director of the Norway-based maritime insurance company DNK.
It was only a matter of time before a Houthi missile brought down one of the many tankers and bulk carriers that still traverse the Red Sea every day. (In the first two months of this year, traffic through the Red Sea was down by 50 percent compared to the same period last year.) “The Houthis have no regard for life and even less for the environment,” Ringbakken said. “They shoot missiles at ships even though they know that there are humans and hazardous cargo on them.”
For years, the Houthis allowed an oil supertanker ironically named Safer that was moored off the coast of Yemen to rust away even though she was holding more than 1 million barrels of crude oil. By the beginning of last year, the Safer was close to disintegration: an event that would have cost hundreds of thousands of Yemenis their livelihoods because it would have killed enormous quantities of fish. Indeed, had the Safer’s oil leaked, it would even have forced the Houthi-controlled ports of Hudaydah and Saleef to close, thus preventing ordinary Yemenis from receiving food and other necessities.
It would, of course, also have caused permanent damage to all manner of marine life, including coral reefs and mangroves, in the Red Sea. Then the United Nations pulled off an almost impossible feat: It got Yemen’s warring factions, international agencies, and companies to work together to transfer the oil off the Safer. Disaster was averted. “It was a massive undertaking,” Ringbakken noted. “But for years and years and years, the Houthis were adding impediments against this undertaking, even though the Safer was sitting just off the Yemeni coast.”
Indeed, maritime terrorism itself is not new. “Besides guerrillas and terrorists, attacks have been carried out by modern day pirates, ordinary criminals, fanatic environmentalists, mutinous crews, hostile workers, and foreign agents. The spectrum of actions is equally broad: ships hijacked, destroyed by mines and bombs, attacks with bazookas, sunk under mysterious circumstances; cargos removed; crews taken hostage; extortion plots against ocean liners and offshore platforms; raids on port facilities; attempts to board oil rigs; sabotage at shipyards and terminal facilities; even a plot to steal a nuclear submarine,” researchers at RAND summarized—in 1983.
Now, though, the Houthis have upped the nihilism, and unlike the guerrillas, terrorists, and pirates of the 1980s, they have the weaponry to cause an ocean-going vessel to sink. The joint U.S.-U.K. military operation against the Houthis has failed to deter the Iranian-backed militia’s attacks; indeed, not even air strikes by U.S. and U.K. forces have convinced the Houthis that it’s time to stop. On the contrary, they’re escalating their attacks. They do so because they’re completely unconcerned about loss of life within their ranks or harm to their own waters.
It’s giving them a global platform. That, in turn, is likely to encourage other militias to also attack ships carrying toxic substances—even if it ruins their own waters. The local population is hardly in a position to hold a militia accountable. Indeed, militias interested in maritime terrorism could decide that the world’s growing sea-based infrastructure is an attractive target. And there’s a new form of sea-based infrastructure they could decide to make a preferred target, not just because it’s set for explosive growth but because attacking it would guarantee a global platform: CO2 storage.
With the world having failed to reduce its carbon-dioxide emissions enough to halt climate change, CO2 storage has become an urgent priority. Through this technique, carbon dioxide can be captured and buried underground, typically underneath the ocean. Norway has, for example, begun auctioning out licenses for CO2 storage exploration on its continental shelf. So has Britain. The United States has 15 carbon-storage sites, and another 121 are being developed. Even Big Oil has discovered carbon storage. ExxonMobil is buying offshore blocks to use for carbon storage instead of oil drilling.
Carbon storage sites are, of course, designed to withstand both natural perils and man-made attacks, but that won’t prevent destructive groups—especially ones backed by a powerful state—from trying. And because groups like the Houthis are so unconcerned about all forms of life, it won’t matter to them that releasing concentrated CO2 would cause extreme harm to the planet—including themselves. Even a tiny carbon-storage leakage of 0.1 percent per year can lead to additional CO2 emissions of 25 giga-tonnes, researchers have established.
Until recently, sea-based infrastructure was only lightly guarded, because it was in everyone’s interest that it worked. The sabotage of Nord Stream and various other pipelines and undersea cables over the past two years have demonstrated that such peacefulness can no longer be taken for granted. The new CO2 sites will need not just AI-enhanced monitoring but regular patrolling to communicate to potential attackers that it’s not even worth attempting an attack.
And for now, attacking merchant vessels remains a promising and economical strategy for the Houthis and their ilk. It doesn’t seem to matter that ammonium phosphate sulfate will soon be poisoning Yemeni waters and thus depriving locals of their livelihoods. Indeed, other bulk carriers and tankers may soon join the Rubymar on the bottom of the sea, poisoning the future for even more Yemenis.
For the Houthis, what matters is not the outcome: It’s the attention. That’s what makes them such a vexing problem for the U.S. Navy and other navies, shipowners, maritime insurers, and especially for seafarers. But there is another group that should be just as worried about the rampant insecurity on the high seas: ocean conservationists.
There is, in fact, a woman with an unsurpassed green platform who could make the growing scourge of maritime terrorism her new cause. (Nearly) everyone would thank you, Greta.

Headcannon Neteyam eats alot 💀
@cinetrix ofc I love this image so damn much
Warnings : non lol sfw n all kinda short and idk if I did a head cannon right but TAAAADAAAA anyways
So let’s start off with the Na’vi people are just big being’s anyways so obviously they eat a lot much more then any human could dream.
Much more tht Neteyam well he eats more the any other grown man in the clan.
He grew up in the clan around his people so it’s more of a on going joke at this point about how does he even have any room left in his skinny body ya know.
When he was just born he would constantly cry Mo’at would simply say “my eywa he’s just hungry again” like so confused she’s delivered hundreds of babies and helped raise even more then that, but Neteyam was just a bottomless pit it seemed.
Jake and Neytiri couldn’t keep him from solid food as soon as he could crawl he was snatching food off plates and fruit out of baskets so what did Jake do? What any natural human would do, as that’s the only example he has at that point in his life.
He put it on the table and he truly believed he had handled the problem, unfortunately that just prompted the excited baby Neteyam to climb up the chair legs and on to the table as quite and quickly as can be.
Jake turned around and about had an out of body experience from the shock running through his body place Neteyam back on the floor just for him to repeat it this time right in front of his fathers watching eyes.
That was certainly the last thing he expected from his year and half old baby boy so they did start him a bit early on solids lol. He grew so did the the hunger, so for the first 6 years of his life he was as “chubby”as a Navi child can be of course that didn’t last long seeing as not only did he have a growth spurt very shortly after turning six but he began training.
Eventually him into the tall, slender, strong, and sexy Warrior he is today always providing well for the clan with hunting and gathering but of course the only thing he gets in trouble for beside the trouble his siblings bring in his rather peaceful(I CAN DREAM) life.
When the hunting party is out he has a bad habit of bringing snacks lol just a few small fruits or some dried meats his grandmother keeps in bulk for him at all times for her growing young Warrior.
Not only does it attract other predators lurking in the forest that are definitely not friends it. Drives. Jake. fucking. batty.
He gets so fucking angry when the forest is completely silent and all he can hear his son fucking struggling to eat a whole slim Jim (Jake refuses to call it anything else) in one bite without alerting anyone around him.
After moving to the reef and finding a whole new world of food options he was so fat n full after the first meal the family were a wee bit embarrassed.
Neteyam definitely had his fair share making others in their new clan stare in shock right up until you popped up the clan chef really you just organized meals in the clan and we’re in charge of the gathering of fruits and vegetables as well as medicine good leaves and vines for clothes and shelter supplies.
All you saw was ur kinda man for cooking was a great past time of yours loving to create new thing and find new spices and turn sour berries into sweet treats even tho the other women on the reaf just didn’t quite get it to you he was amazing.
His mysterious ways making him impossible to read other then the fact he clearly loves the food you would bring him and him simply returning the plate or bowl with shells and flowers spewed on top little did you know you’d be cooking for him everynight and definitely every meal after you all return to the forest but this time as his mate ❤️
Taglist: @prettiestplanetarian (I’m only gonna tag you in this one cus you said to but I can tag you in others if you want lol anyways thank you for the support without knowing what to expect 💋💋)

@devilofthecresentisle liked [+] for a starter.
The Polar Tang breaks the surface of the water, rising into a sheltered cove that is set into the island's southern cliffs. It is small, barely wide enough to fit the bulk of the submarine, but deep enough that the Tang can submerge if need be. It also helps that there is a good path through the reefs to get to this cove. It'll give Law and his crew a reason to go back to those pristine reefs. There were so many interesting fish species to study. Vibrant little creatures Law could watch for hours and feel some measure of peace. A beauty in those depths he can get nowhere.
Plus, there is the fact that this small island seems relatively safe. No signs of people when they approached and the jungle above seems lush, perhaps even filled with resources. A good place to stop for a break and refuel. A place to restock their supplies. Also, a place where Law can stretch his legs. He's in need of a good wander.
Once the Tang settles in place, the Hearts getting to securing her and keeping their home safe, the captain emerges from the depths. Kikoku sits on his shoulder, golden gaze taking a moment to appreciate the efficiency of his crew. He creates a Room, spreading it into the cliff side to find the path up and out of these caves.
"Gonna take a walk," Law projects, telling everyone within ear shot. "Shachi you keep the Tang safe. Clione heads the foraging effort. I'll mark the path out of the cave. It's pretty short so nothin' to worry 'bout. See you guys in a couple hours."
With that he teleports off the ship and strides through the crack in the wall that is the path to the surface. Using the spatial data of his Room Law strides confidently on, a piece of chalk gets pulled from a pocket and used to put arrows on the wall as he walks. Arrows to point the way and a cross to mark bad paths. Soon enough, the Surgeon of Death with his travel pack steps out into the sunlight. He breathes deep of the tropical air. Yeah, this seems like a nice place.

FFXIVWrite2024 - Day 27: Memory
Coin rolled in his palm, Sal staring at the water below the lip of the dock he leaned on, a small lamp on the pillar the Corsair was against providing light to the waves and water and young man. His eyes watched the dock, having slunk back to Nashmau and this time in the shadows, a thick brown coat hiding any hint of red in its folds and depths.
With his eyes closed Sal could imagine that beyond the Marsh he could hear the Fomor in Arrapago Reef still and his head bowed, the waves singing and crying with the teeming souls of the drowned. He had forged peace with Aphmau - Nashmeira - but it had cost him everything he had loved. The closest thing to his home was the port city Nashmau where he had spent a few turns surviving when the seas had spit him out as Odin had raised the Ebony Queen, hiding from the inspection of the Empire, and for their safety Sal sat on the pier away from the people, head down and hands hidden by shadows.
He had left the last time with the ward of evil in his wake, knowing Marafarh had passed her helm to Javed and Javed… had none of the grace Marafarh had or care for a child she'd watched grow up. And Sal, who had only wanted to give his few people left peace, took their demand for exile as the only thing he could do for them: he was shadowed by Beasts and nothing Sal could do could remove that stain. Nines might no longer follow him as much but Nines still could, and even if Aphmau commanded the Beasts to change - they were Beasts.
He'd seen their souls break and knew things the Immortals would never let be known free.
"Lad, y' grabbing supplies?" The ship captain he had been working with on the journey over caught that of all the crew Sal had remained near the ship like it was a leash and the teen - a young man now, leaving the innocent turns behind more and more - lifted his head and offered a lopsided smile, hair hiding an eye that glimmered gold in the dim light.
"We're leaving at tide, aye?"
"Aye."
"Don't need anythin' then."
The captain slowly came up beside him, looking down at Sal and his coat, spotting the bulk hidden in the coat, the thick squat gun he carried but never drew, then watched his hands a moment, long enough to see the glint in his palm. "What stories does that coin have then, lad?"
Sal lifted the coin up and on one side cresting waves and a dolphin squad, on the other a ship. The coin looked worn, beloved, cared for in a way that spoke of constant holding and time and the Captain, for a moment, felt in his blood and bones the salt of the sea reaching out as he stared. He'd seen the coins before, once, in a dusty box but this coin had never been stored in a box away from sight.
"Love and curse. Blood and salt. Death and damnation," came the answer from the odd lad who'd joined their crew in a squall and had never asked for anything. He loved the sea, anyone with eyes could tell - the only thing he loved, maybe, as the captain heard the layer of loathing wrapped around Sal's words as the coin vanished again.
Silence and waves before the captain spoke. "Who're y' named for then, lad?"
A laugh before Sal's eyes closed and he drew in the air. "Luzaf."
"Dangerous name to carry, especially here."
"That's not why." Sal looked at the captain and his smile was light. "If you want, I'll leave. No one here will blame y', if you worry."
Little pieces clinked into place for the sailor as he looked from Sal to the port. "You've been here before."
"Yes."
"And they've asked y' to stay away."
"Yes."
Sal offered nothing at the damning words - no explanation, no tears, no pleading. The captain felt like the boy had accepted the reason for the sentence it was, and the captain knew this port was special, old, ancient and quiet as if it carried ghosts in its cellars. "The crew?"
"They'll be fine." Now there was something in Sal's tone, the guilt and swallow quick, harsh. "It's me. Not like y' knew. I bought passage, I'm not crew." His hand closed on something. "You can leave my bag on the dock."
Staring at the man who had left the ship and stayed on the dock instead of setting foot on the land of the city the captain weighed the unknowns like a pile of sand and coins on a scale. And then, looking at the city, he sighed even as he pulled his hat on and started to move. "Nothin' personal, lad. You're good with the ship, with the sea-"
"Captain has to look out for his crew first." Soft words but understanding.
The captain wondered if he felt better for them even as he left the strange passenger alone on the docks, watching now and catching sight of the spotters he'd missed before, ones Sal likely had known about given he'd stayed unmoving as soon as they docked. His crew and their work needed Nashmau more than they needed the coin from a cursed lad - a whistle back to the ship and a rough call and a few ticks later Sal's bag, packed as if he'd expected this, was set on the dock near him as the captain turned from the ship, walking the planks to Nashmau and away.
Leaning on the bag on one side, the pillar on another, Sal let his eyes close and held his breath until his lungs burned.

It’s an ideal choice for various dive destinations, enabling divers to discover the underwater environment without relying on cumbersome scuba tanks. The main benefit of tankless diving is that most of the gear remains on the surface, leading to better mobility, less effort, and minimized water resistance. This results in less underwater noise and disturbance, as the surface air compressor pumps air to the diver through a hose, eliminating the need for heavy tanks. Tankless diving is generally limited to a maximum depth of 30 feet of seawater (fsw) or 9 meters of seawater (msw). The BLU3 Nomad Dive System allows divers to reach these depths and is powered by a specially designed battery pack nomad. The BLU3 Difference Powered by a specially designed lithium-ion battery pack, the BLU3 Nomad Dive System allows divers to descend up to 30 feet underwater. Carrying a few extra packs extends the dive time and allows for more exploration. 5. ⚙️ The Mechanics Behind the Magic: How Tankless Systems Work Also referred to as Hookah Diving, tankless diving presents a revolutionary alternative to conventional diving systems. Instead of carrying heavy scuba tanks, the diver is connected to a motor/compressor unit on the surface that draws in fresh air and transports it through a hose connected to the diver’s weight belt. This process delivers air efficiently to the diver while reducing the equipment’s weight and making diving more accessible and enjoyable. A custom battery-powered air compressor, which floats on the water’s surface, supplies divers with an air supply of compressed air via a hose. The pump air is transferred through the intake, down the common hose, then into the individual hoses, and to low pressure regulators, making it easily accessible for the diver’s next breath. A spare battery can be used to prolong the dive time and ensure a seamless diving experience. Breathing Made Efficient The heart of BLU3’s Nomad Dive System is the Smart Reg™. This innovative technology offers the following benefits: - Monitors the diver’s breathing patterns to efficiently deliver air - Ensures a comfortable dive experience - Provides a more convenient and enjoyable underwater adventure with Nomad. The Smart Reg™ offers the following benefits: - Uses patented technology to continuously monitor and adjust to the diver’s breathing patterns - Conserves battery life - Guarantees a consistent and reliable air delivery - Ensures the diver gets exactly the right amount of air when they need it Powering Your Dive Rechargeable batteries power tankless dive systems, offering a sustainable, eco-friendly substitute for traditional scuba diving. The duration of these batteries varies, with some systems featuring battery packs lasting over an hour and in other cases up to 3 hours. The type and quality of batteries utilized significantly influence the performance and runtime of tankless diving systems. For instance, while the Sea Lion system is comparable to a gasoline-powered system, the battery-powered Nomad scuba diving system offers approximately 60 minutes of battery time. 6. 🧳 Travel Light and Dive Right: The Portability Advantage The portability of tankless dive systems stands as one of their most notable advantages. Their lightweight design and convenient transportation options provide a stark contrast to traditional heavy scuba gear, making them an ideal choice for divers who are always on the go. Always ensure you have the necessary training and equipment for safe diving. How deep can you dive without getting the bends? To avoid getting the bends, it's generally safe to dive up to 30 feet. However, factors like bottom time and ascent speed also play a crucial role in preventing decompression sickness. Why can't you fly 24 hours after scuba diving? You shouldn't fly 24 hours after scuba diving because the decrease in air pressure during the flight could lead to decompression sickness due to the formation of nitrogen bubbles in your bloodstream. It's best to wait at least 12-24 hours before flying. What are the two types of tankless dive systems offered by BLU3? BLU3 offers two types of tankless dive systems: the Nomad Mini Dive System for diving up to 15 feet and the Nomad Dive System for diving up to 30 feet. Salty, do you have a specific website you prefer to buy your fish equipment from?
Tbh nearly everything I have is hand-me-downs or from conventions, I prefer to see a product in person before I buy it, but I did recently make some online orders.
Within the last few months I’ve ordered from Bulk Reef Supply, saltwateraquarium.com, and MarineDepot. All of them were great!! They’re all pretty similar, but prices and how many products they have varies. If I had to rank them, I’d say Bulk Reef Supply comes out on top. Really great service, fast shipping, plus they have an amazing YouTube channel with instructional videos/reviews of most of the stuff they carry.
Second would be saltwateraquarium.com, still great but they don’t seem to have as much information/descriptions of their products, and maybe not as much variety.
I don’t know much about MarineDepot, I ordered my B-Ionic from them, cheapest of any online seller, can’t complain.
Amazon has a lot of stuff too ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Grim History
Michael Oliver, the Phoenix Foundation and Three Failed Attempts at Starting a New Nation
National Public Radio once called The Phoenix Foundation a shadowy and sinister organization. It is not entirely clear if they are still active. We do know that their founder, Michael Oliver, tried on three separate occaisions to start his own nation based on libertarian ideology. His methods involved stirring up troubles in small island nations with a potential for starting violent independence movements. Michael Oliver and the Phoenix Foundation were, at best, on a quixotic quest without any realistic chance of success.
The sixties were a time when national independence movements were thriving. The post-colonial era was at its peak and anti-Soviet rebellions were breaking out in Eastern Europe. Some of that spirit spread to the first world and Michael Oliver, a real estate developer who had made it big in Las Vegas, caught a bit of that wind. Oliver was a Lithuanian immigrant, a far-right anarcho-libertarian in ideology, an anti-communist, anti-tax activist, and advocate of strict adherence to the gold standard. In 1971, he began pitching dreams of a libertarian utopia where no government would interfere with anybody and no taxes would be paid. He attracted a sleazy group of intelligence agents, laissez faire capitalist extremists, pimps, drug traffickers and mafiosi who poured $200.000 into his scheme to build his island paradise in the South Pacific.
The Minerva Reefs, somewhat near Tonga, were uninhabited by anything other than sea creatures; this was due to their location underwater. Michael Oliver hired a team of barges to haul sand from Australia to the reef and dump it there to make an island rising above sea level. When the waves no longer covered the newly-made land, Oliver and his appointed president of the Republic of Minerva, Morris Davis, arrived with flags and freshly minted coins made of gold on one side and silver on the other. They built one tower on the island. The other governments of the region were suspicious, so they held a meeting and agreed that something needed to be done. The King of Tonga sent a small band of troops to occupy the island; they seized Minerva’s one tower, planted the Tongan flag in the sand, and chased Oliver and his goofy friends away. The island of Minerva has been a part of Tonga ever since.
Never one to kknow when to quit, Oliver saw the Republic of Minerva as a learning experience rather than a defeat. His next venture into nation building involved ex-OSS intelligence agent Mitchell Werbell and a large supply of military-grade weaponry to be used for defense and armed rebellion. 1973 was the year when Great Britain decided to set the Bahamas free and end colonial rule in that Caribbean group of islands. The white inhabitants of Bahamian Abaco wanted to remain a part of the U.K. since they feared being a marginalized minority population under a government made up of Afro-Caribbean politicians. Oliver saw his opportunity. He made contact with the people of Abaco and offered them financial and military aid in exchange for letting him build his libertarian fantasy on their land. He soon brought Werbell in a helicopter with a large collection of heavy weaponry and a newly-penned constitution guaranteeing extremely limited government and establishing Abaco as a tax-haven nation.
Mitchell Werbell attempted to build a militia by training the residents of Abaco in warfare techniques. Initially, the machine guns and hand grenades looked like fun but soon the peoples’ interest waned. They had little interest in being a utopian country where rich people could hide their money in banks to avoid taxation; they did not want their island to turn into a seedy enclave of drug runners and whorehouses. Ultimately they wanted to remain a part of the U.K. but that dream died when the British officials flat-out told them they were not interested in keeping Abaco as a British possession. Oliver began to look like a meddler and a crank. The Bahamian government easily put down the rebellion; Michael Oliver got deported and Werbell got arrested for illegal weapons trafficking. They sentenced him to prison in the United States.
The Phoenix Foundation officially started in 1975. The three trustees of the group were Michael Oliver, his friend James McKeever, and Harry Schulz, the world’s highest paid investment banker at the time. Their aim was to turn their anarcho-capitalist, laissez faire ideology into a tax-free banking nation ; their motivation was that something had to be done soon since America was losing the Cold War and the age-old right wing trope that a communist totalitarian dictatorship would soon engulf the freest nation in the world was imminent. Either that or society was about to collapse because the government makes people pay taxes. After scheming in secret for five years, the Phoenix Foundation moved its headquarters to Amsterdam to escape the prying eyes of the IRS and other government snoops. In 1980 they put their plans into action.
The New Hebrides were never officially a colony. The French and British governments came to a unique agreement to jointly administer the South Pacific island chain without actually claiming possession of it. The colonial era was winding down and both countries agreed to allow the New Hebrides to become an independent nation, soon to be named Vanuatu. The transition was to be a peaceful one and a cause for the Melanesian inhabitants to celebrate. The biggest obstacle came from a remote island called Espiritu Santo. Jimmy Stevens, a half-caucasian and half-Melanesian leader of a cargo cult called Nagriamel, had campaigned in Vanuatu’s first presidential election and lost by a landslide. Disgruntled, he returned to Espiritu Santo and declared the island to be a separate nation named Vemerana. The people in his cult rose up in rebellion, armed only with fists and bows and arrows. They seized all government property and the radio station, rioted, burned and looted buildings and blockaded the air strip to prevent any planes from landing.
Soon after that, a boat full of Vietnamese refugees got intercepted by the military. Upon inspection, they uncovered a large cache of guns and radio equipment. The boat was headed for Espiritu Santo and the ownership was registered as the Phoenix Foundation. The Vietnamese boat-people were being brought along to bulk-up the population of Espiritu Santo, although what they would do once they got there has never been fully explained.
For the Phoenix Foundation, this proved to be a minor deterrence. They flew Jimmy Stevens to the United States to petition the United Nations for statehood recognition. He returned with boxes of Vemerana flags, passports, and freshly minted coins. The Phoenix Foundation clandestinely brought in a new supply of war materiel from Fiji. Spies alerted the government in the capital of Vanuatu. The conflict known as the Coconut War had begun. Three years after the murder-suicides of the People’s Temple cult in Jonestown, Guyana, a group of white men supplying natives of a remote jungle island with rifles made the Phoenix Foundation look scary and suspicious. The Vanuatuans asked Britain and France for help. The British thought it was more trouble than it was worth but France still had troops in New Caledonia. They were transported to Espiritu Santo, albeit with no mandate to engage in any military action. When the followers of Nagriamel saw the unwillingness of the soldiers to fight, they went on a rampage and destroyed all the stores and buildings on the island. In an act of desperation, Papua New Guinea sent in a band of soldiers to quell the violence. In the end, the Papuans were welcomed as guests and fellow Melanesians; they quickly made friends with the Nagriamel fighters and the Coconut War ended without any combat.
Jimmy Stevens was arrested and imprisoned. During the trial, it became obvious that the Phoenix Foundation was manipulating him and trying to orchestrate the uprising behing the scenes. Michael Oliver and his gang of loony libertarians were deported and permanently banned from Vanuatu.
Despite being a successful businessman, Michael Oliver was a three-time loser nonetheless, and the Phoenix Foundation turned out to be nothing more than a clique of dopey rich kids who could not see farther then they could reach. This is sad because they obviously could not see very far. Maybe this is what millionaires do when they have too much time on their hands, too much imagination, too little purpose in life and only a tenuous connection to life in the real world. Wealth does not automatically breed wisdom. A nation can not be built with an excess of ideology and no pragmatic or practical plan of action.

Wallis and Futuna, in full Territory of the Wallis and Futuna Islands, French Territoire des Îles Wallis et Futuna, self-governing overseas collectivity of France consisting of two island groups in the west-central Pacific Ocean. The collectivity is geographically part of western Polynesia. It includes the Wallis Islands (Uvea and surrounding islets) and the Horne Islands (Futuna and Alofi). The capital is Matâ’utu, on Uvea.
The island of Uvea takes its European name, Wallis, from its 18th-century British discoverer, Capt. Samuel Wallis, but the indigenous name is of much greater antiquity. Uvea and Futuna are sometimes confused with islands of the same or similar names elsewhere. Uvea is sometimes confused with Ouvéa in the Loyalty Islands of New Caledonia. Futuna has a namesake among the islands of Vanuatu (formerly the New Hebrides), and folklore suggests that both the Futuna in Vanuatu and the Stewart Islands (Sikaiana) in the Solomon Islands were settled from Futuna in the pre-European era. Total land area 54 square miles (140 square km). Pop. (2008) 13,445.
Uvea is a volcanic island, but it is relatively low, rising to a maximum elevation of only 476 feet (145 metres) at Mount Lulu Fakahega. Its total land area is 29 square miles (76 square km). Uvea is surrounded by a barrier reef with some 20 uninhabited islets, which have a maximum elevation of 200 feet (60 metres). The reef is broken by passes that give boats access to the main island, and the area between the reef and the island is a sheltered fishing ground.
The soils of Uvea and Futuna islands are of limited fertility, and a number of factors restrict agricultural production. Only about one-fourth of the available land is suitable for cultivation. The system of land tenure, which is based on customary ownership by kin groups, has resulted in a fragmentation of land parcels. Traditional agricultural practices alternate two or three years of cropping with long fallow periods, and there has been a cumulative deterioration of the soil.
Basic subsistence crops have been introduced: coconuts, breadfruit, bananas, taro, cassava, yams, mangoes, and pineapples. The coconut groves on Uvea were destroyed by rhinoceros beetles in the 1930s, but the pest did not reach Futuna and Alofi. Substantial stands of undisturbed natural forest remain only on Alofi and a small section of Uvea. Otherwise, forests have virtually disappeared, and erosion is a problem on Futuna.
All of the territory’s land mammals have been introduced. Pigs are of ceremonial importance and very highly valued. Some cattle are also raised. Chickens constitute a minor part of the diet. Fish and other marine fauna provide the bulk of dietary protein.
About four-fifths of the population of Wallis and Futuna engages in subsistence farming, growing yams, taros, bananas, and other food crops. Some livestock is raised (mostly pigs). The notion of selling produce from the land is contrary to traditional custom, wherein items are bartered and not sold. Similarly, fish are caught mostly to satisfy the immediate needs of family, near kin, and neighbours. Most fish are taken in sheltered areas within the fringing reef, and little fishing is done in the open sea.
Wallis and Futuna is truly resource-poor, and very little revenue is earned from exports. Revenues come from French government subsidies, licensing of fishing rights to Japanese and South Korean companies, import taxes, and remittances from expatriate workers in New Caledonia. Exports include small amounts of breadfruit, yams, and taros, along with trochus shells. Vietnam, New Caledonia, Italy, and Japan are the major recipients. Imports, which come mainly from France and Australia, include food products, electrical machinery, road vehicles, and building and public works supplies.
Uvea is more developed than Futuna. The French administration is located on Uvea, and that island has the better infrastructure. Its roads and public services are superior, and most households have running water and electricity. The government is the island’s largest single employer. In contrast, Futuna is somewhat isolated; there is only a partially surfaced road circling the island; and administrative positions are scarce. Wallis and Futuna attracts a limited amount of tourism.
There is an international airport at Hihifo, northern Uvea, that is linked to French Polynesia and New Caledonia. Flights operate between Uvea and Futuna islands. A cargo vessel travels between the islands and Nouméa, New Caledonia, about a dozen times a year.
Finally, I will leave a link which includes all companies and enterprises in Wallis and Futuna, for those who want to research and discover more about this islands. Thanks for reading.

Pet Grooming Products Market| Production, Supply and Demand Forecast by Product Types, Key Players, Applications to 2025
The global pet grooming products market size is expected to reach USD 14.5 billion by 2025, expanding at a CAGR of 5.7%, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. Increasing pet adoption and growing awareness about their hygiene are some of the factors driving the demand for pet grooming product.
In addition, the availability of a wide range of medicated and organic variants in shampoo, conditioner, and ear butter has drawn greater consumer attention towards grooming products. Dogs and cats are the most common companion animals and they contribute significantly to the demand for various grooming products.
Due to thick furry coating and outdoor movements and activities, companion animals are susceptible to various diseases and infections triggered by fleas and ticks. Hence companies are introducing specific brushes and shampoos to get rid of these. For instance, SynergyLabs offers veterinary formulated medicated shampoos to relieve companion animals from bacterial infections.
The increasing adoption of pets by domestic households has opened up potential opportunities for new entrants in the market especially through online platforms. Some of the e-commerce distributors of pet products include Amazon.com; Petco Animal Supplies, Inc.; PetSmart Inc.; PetMed Express, Inc.; TABcom LLC; BarkBox; PetFlow; and Bulk Reef Supply.
Among various grooming products, shampoo and conditioner were estimated to have the highest revenue share of the global market. This scenario is majorly attributed to the increasing use of these products as they are specially customized for pet hair and its hygiene.
The Asia Pacific is expected to register the highest growth over the forecast period majorly driven by the rising pet adoption in China and India in 2018. The market for a companion animal in Japan is attractive with a population of around 20 million cats and dogs.
According to the Japan Pet Food Association (JPFA), there are around 9.7 million cats and 11.8 million dogs living with families in Japan and these numbers are growing every year. The average life expectancy of companion cats in Japan is 14.4 years and for dogs, it is 13.9 years. The rising adoption of companion animals by their owners as family members is expected to boost the growth of the market.
Some of the key players operating in the global pet grooming product market include Groomer's Choice; Himalaya Herbal Healthcare; Spectrum Brands, Earthbath; Resco; SynergyLabs; Petco Animal Supplies, Inc.; Coastal Pet Products; Vet's Best; 4-Legger; and World For Pets.
