Miracle on 34th Street (1994, Les Mayfield)
03/01/2024
Miracle on 34th Street is a 1994 film directed by Les Mayfield and starring Richard Attenborough as Santa Claus. It is a remake of the famous 1947 film Miracle on 34th Street directed by George Seaton.
November 24th, Thanksgiving Day. Tony, the Santa Claus of the Cole department store, should close the big parade through the streets of New York on a sleigh pulled by fake reindeer; however he is caught drunk while carrying out his job by Mr. Kris Kringle.
Meanwhile, the Lanbergh stores, competitors of the Cole stores, hatch a plan to discredit Cole's Santa Klaus Kris Kringle, managing to have him arrested and locked up in a psychiatric clinic. When everything seems compromised for Kris Kringle since the true existence of Santa Claus has not been proven, little Susan approaches and shows the judge a Christmas card with a dollar bill.
Following the court case, Dorey and Bryan maneuvered by Kris into realizing their true feelings for each other, and they marry in a small ceremony just after midnight mass on Christmas Eve.
Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a score of 60% based on reviews from 35 critics. TV Guide called the film "curiously depressing", while Desson Howe of The Washington Post stated, in contrast to the 1947 version, that it "will no longer be found on television (or it's computer equivalent) in half a century." Its supporters included Gene Sisksl and Roger Ebert, who gave the film ("two thumbs up" on their show.

Albert Finney in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (Karel Reisz, 1960)
Cast: Albert Finney, Shirley Anne Field, Rachel Roberts, Hylda Baker, Norman Rossington, Bryan Pringle, Robert Cawdron, Edna Morris, Elsie Wagstaff, Frank Pettit, Avis Bunnage, Colin Blakely, Irene Richmond. Screenplay: Alan Sillitoe, based on his novel. Cinematography: Freddie Francis. Art direction: Edward Marshall. Music: John Dankworth.
The 24-year-old Albert Finney was spot-on casting for the antihero of Alan Sillitoe's adaptation of his novel, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. With his slicked-up coif, predatory grin, and omnipresent cigarette, Finney's Arthur Seaton exudes the kind of sexual attractiveness that allows one to ignore his rough edges. Always on the prowl, Arthur is the quintessential working-class yobbo, drinking too much and sleeping around too carelessly. He gets his comeuppance when Brenda (Rachel Roberts), married to the stodgy Jack (Bryan Pringle), becomes pregnant -- Jack's sexual neglect makes her sure the child is Arthur's -- and Jack's brother and another soldier work Arthur over in a vacant lot. Meanwhile, he has fallen for Doreen (Shirley Anne Field), and the film ends with Arthur and Doreen on a hillside overlooking their factory town, planning a wedding and dreaming of a home of their own. But from what we've seen of Arthur, this is almost a parody of a happy ending. Doreen's a tough cookie, too, and we can only foresee a kind of grim muddling-through future, a recapitulation of the lives of their parents and neighbors. It's to the credit of Finney and a superb supporting cast that the film is not a dreary slog through blighted lives, but a kind of tribute to the persistent energy of the working class. It helps that the movie is filmed by the great Freddie Francis, who finds a rich palette of grays in the surroundings, and provides a needed burst of action in the fairgrounds sequence. But above all, it's Finney's show, launching one of the great movie careers, from rakish young leading man to invaluable character actor.

Jordan Nobles - Chiaroscuro - two compositions for chamber orchestra (Redshift Music)
The two works on this album offer us a portrait of extremes in Jordan Nobles’ output, coming from different time periods with different objectives. Yet even though 15 years separate these pieces, they are unified by common ground rules — namely flexible instrumentation and duration — which have become trademarks of Nobles’ mature music. Pulses (1999) is energetic and rhythmic, tipping the hat to the American minimalist Steve Reich. The work is in a constant state of metric and harmonic modulation, creating dramatic turns from the virtuosic to the dreamlike. By comparison, Chiaroscuro (2014) is an essay on harmonic stasis, meditating on subtly shifting colours, ranges, and articulations: a sonic rendering of the "shadows and light" painting technique from which the piece derives its name. - Mark Takeshi McGregor 1. Lila, a 17th century soul transported into a life size ball jointed doll, returns in DOLLFACE VOLUME 2. The first issue broke records and is Action Lab’s biggest debut series. Over 20,000 copies were sold and the regular covers for DOLLFACE #1 sold out and needed to be reprinted. It’s perfect for fans of VAMPBLADE and ZOMBIE TRAMP.
Co-creator Bryan Seaton had this to say about the second volume: “I think these four issues are the best so far. I hope you enjoy watching the history behind Lila unfold as much as I do, and Dan’s art just brings it all to life.”
The second volume collects issues #5-8 of the ongoing series, co-written and illustrated by ZOMBIE TRAMP creator Dan Mendoza. Join Lila as she continues to hunt witches in the present day with help from the two MIT students that transported her soul. Dollface #1
Okay, stop me if you've heard this one... A 17th-century witch hunter is hunting down a witch in Boston, back in the 17th century. Chicanery happens and her soul is transported into the modern world and takes up residence in the 3-D printed ball-jointed sex doll that two MIT students have built as a prototype of the perfect woman because of course they have. There's a lot of potential for drama here and the publisher, Action Lab, has given me some of my personal favorite comics over the past year (Tomboy being the most notable), so I have high hopes that this will be equally cool.
It’s either going to be that or a disaster, but a fun disaster. I’m looking forward to finding out which.
