DotNW Draw-a-thon, Day 1

Brute Lualdi for the DotNW fan event for July, informally hosted by resident Ratatosk Expert, @aerypear.

I fell out of practice with freehand drawing people. So I have been dragged, kicking and screaming, into an event where I am being asked to draw things that aren't eggs. Oh the humanity.

Initial sketch was with pencil on paper, then digitally inked and colored. Perhaps I will get up the courage to do more than bust shots. Perhaps not.

Testing out Krita for the first time, too. Controls are not as intuitive as CSP or Medibang, but the brushes are nice and freeware is, well, free. Might do some later pieces on my main rig where I can work with CSP again. Might not. Might do some vignettes on top of art or maybe poetry. We'll see. Starting off with Brute mostly because he's less intimidating than characters I actually like and because he was suggested as the first prompt. Definitely tossing some monsters in the mix later on, though. Shame we never get to see Brute being an actual dad. He's barely ever on screen and when he is he's mostly menacing the party. Symphonia has, like, 4 total dads. 2 are antagonists, one has VERY QUESTIONABLE TEACHING METHODS, and the other is barely a character. We need more positive dad rep, for real.

Next up! Two more major antagonists. Hugo Gilchrest, who is Leon and Rutee's father and one of Destiny' major antagonists, versus Brute Lualdi, who is Marta's father and one of Dawn of the New World's main antagonists.

Marta grew up with her mother and father in a happy home

Her parents were activists who tried to advocate for the rights of non-humans, but they were never able to gain much respect. They did run a small organization, though, the vanguard.

When she was fourteen, her mother died in an accident while she and Marta’s father were working. The accident was said to be the fault of non-humans, although never proven as such

Brute Lualdi, Marta’s father, changed significantly in his depression. He closed off and started to resent non-humans

After time Marta couldn’t stand the sort of person he was turning into, and ran away from home.

She’s still in school and lives in a shelter, and she works part-time as a waitress to support herself as well.

If she could do anything, she’d love to become a pro dancer. It was her dream as a little girl, and her mother supported her wholeheartedly.

She’ll admit, she gets wary around non-humans. However she feels she’d be betraying her mother’s memory to blindly hate, so she tries to be understanding

For relationships Marta’s open to coworkers, friends, classmates, and even people who’d work for the vanguard. She’s relatively similar to how she is normally, but a little more closed off- she’s more similar to Marta pre-game.

More Than Anything - Daughter/Father Voting Poll

One last thing you can do for me is send me your rants about these parents in an ask. I'd like to include a blurb about each character when the polls go up because unlike the sexy character contests, winners can't be picked from a picture alone.

While I am equipped to talk about Vesperia, Abyss, Symphonia, and Xillia, the other characters are either from games I haven't played or played a single time a while ago so I'm likely forgetting details. And, I might be forgetting things even from the four I mentioned as being most familiar with. So if you have any thoughts on why any of the characters on this list are terrible parents (or why they're great actually and shouldn't be voted for) send it in an ask and I'll add it to the poll when it comes up.

Alright, I think what I'll do for parent couples is have a pre-poll pitting couples against each other. Aston vs Kerri Lhant, Kratos vs Anna, etc. Then only the worse parent from each co-parenting situation moves on to the full bracket. (Kratos and Dirk would compete separately, because they were both Lloyd's dad but never co-parented). Putting couples together and eliminating very minor character options, here's the list I've come up with:

And there's one slot left. Who should fill it? I took Leia's parents off this list because while they have defined characterization, they're awesome and won't win anyway. I also removed Dorr, who has questionable morals but is an NPC parent of an NPC, so less relevant. I removed Hermes, because while he appears in side material, he doesn't appear in the actual game and there is nothing we know about his parenting in particular to get upset about.

Any of those could be added back in, or someone else. Emeraude? Cornell? Uncle Alba?
