Anthony Stellon, Brotherhood Of Man (1968)

The Teachings of the Adepts, part I
“As we dive into the ancient mysteries a new world opens before us. The more we begin to understand the language of the Adepts, the more grows our respect for their wisdom. The more we become able to grasp their ideas, the more grows our conception of man. The anatomy, physiology, and psychology which they teach make of man something immeasurably greater than the puny and impotent being known to modern science as a compound of bones, muscles, and nerves.
Modern science attempts to prove that man is an animal; the teachings of the Adepts show that he may be be a god. Modern science invests him with the power to lift his own weight; ancient science invests him with the power to control the destiny of the world. Modern science allows him to live for a very limited number of years; ancient science teaches that he has always existed, and will never cease to exist if he desires to live. Modern science deals with the instrument that the real man uses as long and as often as he comes into relationship with the world of phenomena, and she mistakes that instrument for the man; the Adepts show us the true nature of the essential man, to whom one earthly existence is nothing more than one of the many incidents of his eternal career.”

Hi! I was reading your explanation on the real life alchemy references in FMA and thought you might be able to answer a question that I’ve had for a long time. Do you think the incorporation of the Star of David in FMA is intentional? I know much of alchemy has roots in Kabbalah, and can involve Jewish culture, such as the alchemy circle you posted that had Hebrew around the circle. However, many animes, especially those that reference western supernatural concepts, tend to use Jewish and Christian symbolism more for aesthetic than a full understanding of the culture. But based on your analysis, do you think this was a more intentional choice? As a Jewish person with some surface knowledge of alchemy (and curiosity about Kabbalah—though I’ve never looked too closely into it because my mom insists “that’s the stuff that drives people crazy”) I’m very interested in any insight you might have!
Kabbalah is definitely one of my weaker points in the occult sphere, so I'm not sure I'm the right person to answer this. Everything I know about Kabbalah is pretty surface-level. To my knowledge, alchemy and Kabbalah are separate things that got entwined together overtime -- Hermeticism is an entire tradition of Western esotericism that includes both alchemy and Qabalah (with a Q). The real magic circle is not alchemical -- it's from a different tradition entirely (Solomonic magic). I'm not a ceremonialist or a Kabbalist so I couldn't tell you how much of Solomonic magic is genuinely Jewish in origin and how much is appropriative. In the case of FMA specifically, I think that Arakawa's use of the Tree of Life on Ed's Gate was deliberate. With all of the other well-placed symbolism, it probably is meant to be more than window-dressing. I don't know that, though.
I'm not Jewish, but I am an occultist and a mystic, so I feel safe in telling you that Kabbalah does not drive people crazy. Mysticism throws God right in your face, and that's not something that everyone can handle. (Think of the scene where Ed and Izumi are trying to explain what meeting Truth is like to Al, who doesn't remember it.) It can change your entire perception of life, the universe, and everything. The line between mysticism and insanity can appear, and sometimes be, quite thin. (I've written more about that here, here, and here.) Don't let that scare you away! Look into it, and learn from experts if you're interested.

"Ladies, Gentlemen, All,
There is no murderer among you. In fact, Essik was brought here under a misapprehension. For you see, Mr. Alkasani ended his own life through hubris.
A collector of ancient things, he believed in their value but held a cynical view to any esoteric threat they offered. Six weeks past, he came into ownership of a relic, taken from the lost flagship of the Sith Lord known as Darth Jadus. Some part of Jadus' power lurks within that relic, slaying and consuming all who come into its possession, until its long-dead master can reclaim it.
Essik is sorry to say that all here, having entered this mansion, are under threat of this curse now. Within three days, unless we find a way to destroy it, all those present will meet with the same end as your late companion."
I've been meaning to add Essik Lyccane onto here for a while, and given Shellsweet did such a fantastic job of drawing him several times, it was only natural to pick her as an option (seriously, please check out her other stuff).
He's also arguably the one who evolved the most since his inception. I specifically created him for the Brotherhood roleplay website, to break the impression of every general leading from the front. As someone in his twilight years and with a far sharper mind than a strong body, it was a fun contrast.
The thing is, outside of social events and writings, there are not many options for a grand master of strategies. So, over time, he turned into basically a detective for murder mysteries, and then kept bumping into the occult. So it was the odd situation of Adama turned Poirot turned Carnacki, just through the stories I kept being given.
Out of all my lot, he's probably the most fun to write in most non-violent situations, or find an excuse to turn Star Wars into every kind of classical fiction genre I can get an excuse to try. Detective stories, gothic horror, conspiracy thrillers, and even Les Miserables to a degree. All with a five-foot-tall bowler hat-wearing mantis man as the protagonist.
If you want to see more, check out the website here, or even the associated (if in various states of update) wikia here.

Yeah.
Ok.
I'll believe this.
And it makes me like the ending more. I am not fond of "and they gave up their power"-endings, but this as a story of transmutation? Yeah, that works.
I don't mean this in any jokey or disrespectful way; is there any truth to the alchemy in say, the Full Metal Alchemist anime? The symbols or transmutation circles?
Actually the author of FMA did a ton of research into historical western alchemy. The whole law of equivalent exchange is a real alchemical concept from hermetica, and one that sir Issac Newton expounded into the law of thermodynamics.
The elrics dad, Van Hoenhiem, is based on a real alchemist named Theophrastus Bombastus Von Hoenhiem. At one point Pride even references the real alchemists name.
Basically everything about alchemy in FMA is taken from primary sources, down to the symbology of transmutation circles to the color scheme of Edwards design.

If you're taking the WIP Folder asks, I would love to hear about A Symbol For A Better World!
Sure thing!
A Symbol For A Better World is the sixth and final installation to my Fallout fic series A Radioactive Calamity Of Love, Bombs & Gore, taking place during the events of Fallout 4.
The fic stars Nate Gust Sarid, my Sole Survivor OC, and my other OC, Marissa "Ress" Bishop; they encounter each other in the Commonwealth, with Nate searching for his son Shaun, who had been taken by Conrad Kellog and the Institute, while Ress is hunting down the two leading heads of "the Occult"; the founder and her father, Arcane Urias, and his right hand, Aggravor, whom had killed her brother in The House At The Top (Fallout New Vegas fic). Both Nate and Ress work alongside the Minutemen and the Railroad (as well as a strained partnership with Maxson's Chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel) to find both groups and eliminate them, as well as retrieve Shaun. Nate is under the belief that the Institute holds Shaun to indoctrinate him to be apart of their callous cult, while Ress believes that Urias is planning on sacrificing Nate to bring back the Mad Kin of Carnage, Discord, just as he'd done with previous allies that both she and her brother had known (that being the previous Fallout protagonists; Elrand, Finidy, Alph and Ryder, though neither were old enough/alive yet to meet Vega). However, neither Nate and Ress could be farther from the truth.
Not to mention how neither could have expected the carefully crafted orchestration the Institute had over Nate's life, nor the meticulous infiltration of the Occult within the Commonwealth, especially when more threats are being rallied on both Far Harbor and Nuka-World.
As the fate of the Commonwealth is on the brink of destruction, allies and companions must come together now more than ever to put down the threats that hinder a future for a better world in the Wasteland.
This fic is till under heavy construction, and I don't have anything more else to share as of now, but I do have a solid idea where I want to take this finale to A Radioactive Calamity Of Love, Bombs, & Gore.

Lorlornu trudged behind his older brother in silence as they navigated their way through the thorny bushes. The moon, a glowing yellow light, loomed large over the two men as they brushed deviant leaves and shrubs aside and made their way through the forest.
As he had done his entire life, Lorlornu masked his fear by following behind his brother’s more assertive steps...

Lily and James — the alchemical Queen and King. Lily is the main symbol of the entire saga.
In Harry Potter, there are two levels - the mundane and the symbolic. On the mundane level, Lily is a character with her own strengths and weaknesses. On the symbolic level, Lily is the main symbol of the entire saga. Perhaps that's why there's so little talk about her because symbolically Lily is what everyone strives for, everyone searches for but cannot find. Harry learns more about Lily only before the final battle, and there's a reason for that.
It's no secret that HP books are heavily laden with alchemical and Christian symbolism. I'm not religious, and to me, all these symbols are just cultural codes that have had a significant influence on almost all classic literature and art.
Tumblr media
Philipp Otto Runge, Chagall, Goethe — they're all alchemical codes
Firstly, alchemy is not about literally turning lead into gold, it's a path of spiritual development, a path of transformation, a "hero's journey," the journey of the Son returning to the Father. Alchemical transformation is described in the text "The Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz." This is the third manifesto of the Rosicrucian Brotherhood.
So, lilies are a very ancient symbol.
According to Jewish legends, the lily grew in Eden just at the time of Eve's temptation by the devil and could be defiled by him, but even amid temptation, it remained as pure as it was, and no dirty hand dared to touch it. In early medieval depictions, Christ was placed against a backdrop of lilies or in the lily flower, seen as a symbol of the Virgin Mary. The orange lily often symbolizes the blood of Christ.
Tumblr media
Symbolically, Lily is the love of God, a divine spark, and the blood of Christ itself, which was shed in the name of redemption and salvation to atone for the sins of all humanity. And what is the blood of Christ? In Christian tradition, the blood of Jesus Christ is a symbol of the life-giving and saving spirit of God.
By the way, lilies and roses were often confused in translations, and symbolically they are the same. Many suspected that the Rosicrucians' rose is a stylized version of the Egyptian and Indian flowering lotus, and the lotus has often been considered a water lily (they are different, but symbolically they merged). But calling the main character Rose would be too dull and obvious a reference.
Lily - symbolically, she is both the mother of Christ and the Spirit of God herself, the bearer of divine love, to which all seekers are drawn. This is not the only meaning, but for now, it's enough.
God is love, says John the Apostle. (Remus John Lupin, hehe. It was absolutely unnecessary to know his middle name. It's intentionally inserted because each of the marauders, except Sirius, by name signifies one of the disciples closest to Christ. Sirius is a separate story, he signifies something completely different.)
And who is drawn? Well, primarily we see two - James and Snape.
One of the most important things we learn about James is that he's a deer. The deer is a well-known symbol. In myths and folk beliefs, the deer was associated with the soul's aspiration to heaven and purification.
"As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God" Ps. 42: 1
In the Alexandrian "Physiologus," there's an ancient enmity between the stag and the serpent. The serpent hides from the foe in the clefts of the earth, but the stag, with the help of water, draws out the serpent and defeats it. (Water has always been a symbol of the serpent, even in Slytherin's element water, but the stag fights the serpent not with ordinary water but with the water of baptism. The snake has another important meaning for alchemy, but more on that later.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Snape belongs to the Serpent, to secret knowledge, occult knowledge, "philosophical" reason, dark magic, which has always been contrary to the divine nature in Christian understanding and originated from the devil. James belongs to the Lion and the Deer.
The Lion is a typical alchemical symbol. Also, the Red Lion is Christ. Gryffindor embodies the soul's aspiration towards light and transformation, towards salvation. By the way, St. Godric (the hermit) also had his own pet deer, which he saved.
Tumblr media
The deer seeks love, the spirit of God, the divine spark, God Himself, and in this persistent pursuit is shown James's path, as a seeker and as an alchemist. The Potters — if not alchemists themselves, then at least from the lineage of alchemists — the Peverells (The symbol of the Deathly Hallows is an alchemical-masonic symbol). And this means that the Potters are at least seekers; in their souls, there is a desire to find the divine and undergo transformation. The Potters have a strong hatred for the 'serpentine essence' of evil, and this is what needs to be transformed. (By the way, the graveyard is located near St. Jerome's Church. Besides translating the Bible into Latin, Jerome also healed and tamed a lion).
Tumblr media
Masonic-alchemical symbol. Symbol of the philosopher's stone. Symbol of the Deathly Hallows. Solve et coagula is a principle of alchemy meaning "dissolve and coagulate".
An alchemist is a gardener, and this is another interesting reference to James and Lily. The way James tries to find an approach to Lily is an alchemical process. The alchemist tends to the Garden. In Vrisvik's Great Work (the Magnum Opus), it appears as the Garden of the Wise. The Gates to the Garden of the Wise for the Chosen become the process of dissolving "our Substance." James manages to approach Lily only when he dissolves his Ego. The Ego is the main enemy on the path to transformation.
The tradition of "hermetic gardening," that is, "cultivating the flowers of Wisdom in one's garden," becomes a leading line in alchemical symbolism. James cultivates wisdom.
While Snape cultivates "dark knowledge," although his soul also strives for light and love. But Snape is still too captured by his Ego, too captivated by base emotions, a thirst for revenge, recognition, or power, a craving for "secret knowledge." He cannot resist it, no matter how much he may strive for Lily, for the divine transformation of his spirit, and James, still dwelling in his Ego, instead of showing mercy to Snape, pushes him further away. The stag fights the serpent, but God is love. Ultimately, Snape temporarily closes off the paths of alchemical transformation for himself.
Tumblr media
The Rebis is the end product of the alchemical magnum opus or great work. The lion must dissolve the serpent. Hermetic gardening. The alchemical wedding: the Queen and the King.
But besides all this, the deer is also a symbol of eternal renewal and victory over death ("The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death" 1 Corinthians 15:26 ). A symbol of Christ. His constantly renewing antlers represent eternal life.
In the original Greek of the New Testament, the names Jacob and James are variants of the same root—Yaaqob. James is an active force, a seeker, an investigator, a supplanter. James the Great was of a rather impulsive character, but everyone was also amazed by his courage, he was the only one who acknowledged Christ as the Messiah. And he is the only apostle whose death is described in the New Testament. He dies at the hands of King Herod, a cynical and evil king who was willing to murder babies for his purpose. James also dies at the hands of Voldemort, who is willing to kill a baby for his purpose.
Moreover, it was Saint James who was considered the heavenly patron of alchemists. His tomb was located in Santiago de Compostela, which was the oldest center of adepts. It was there, in 1378, after twenty years of unsuccessful attempts to decipher the Book of Hieroglyphic Figures, that Nicolas Flamel, the most famous alchemist of the Middle Ages, went. By the way, Shell Cottage... the scallop shell is a symbol of the apostle James and the "trademark" of the Way of St. James. Shell Cottage is also alchemical. It is there that Harry sees the symbol of the Deathly Hallows around Lovegood's neck.
Tumblr media
James is a seeker. Lily is a symbol of the divine spirit, sparks, transformation. That to which all must ultimately come, that which must change in our world in the image of God. But for now, our world is seized by evil, by the antichrist. To defeat death means to defeat the antichrist in one's soul.
James finds Lily. The Soul finds the Spirit. The Spirit descends into the Soul. The King and Queen marry—and a new life is born, another hero capable of defeating the evil that has engulfed the world, capable of cleansing the world of evil. The connection between Harry and Christ is no secret to anyone.
Tumblr media
The power of love conquers death. A rune appears on Harry's forehead—Sowilo rune—the victory rune, the sun rune, the irreversible rune. It symbolically serves as the key to the world of Alfheim—the world of the light elves, that is, the bright ideas, the prototypes of the buddhial plane, the ideality in this world.
Tumblr media
The key to God. Harry becomes marked. His scar is a reminder to him that he came into this world not just by chance, but to destroy evil. And coming into this world, materializing, a person invariably receives a particle of the antichrist within himself. That's how this world works. Evil is in the soul of each of us, and through the Great Work, a person must purify himself.
And none can live while the other survives, because they mutually exclude each other by their very nature. Christ and antichrist.
But Harry has a difficult path ahead, the path of the Great Work before he can achieve victory. And that will be the theme of all 7 books, 7 years — exactly 7 days is the duration of The Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz for the transformation oh his soul, for victory over death.

While not physically dependent on Kanohi the way Matoran are, Makuta give them equal cultural weight. A Makuta's mask is their identifier. It is difficult to identify who's who if you are all natural shapechagers and illusionists, so it is customary to avoid altering one's mask too drastically in the company of other Makuta. The Hagah tradition to honor past heroes by wearing masks shaped like theirs is derived from this philosophy.
Masks are never swapped or gifted, with a single historical exception. Icarax inherited the Mask of Shadows, and gave his mask of Scavenging to a lowly Matoran as a show of power. Icarax was too foolish to realize Teridax had just done the same to him.
Masks are also emblems of a Makuta's character, their beliefs and philosophies distilled into a single object. Teridax's coup changed the Makuta from scientists and shepherds to occult chessmasters, but can be thought as a shift from the Mask of Mutation to the Mask of Shadows. Would the Makuta have become isolationist hermit-kings had Krika taken control? Accelerationists and disruptors had Gorast?
Only one of Great version each mask has ever been made*, and it is uknown who made them or the Noble versions rewarded to a Makuta's chosen Matoran. One would think that the Makuta's masks were declared immoral for Toa to use after the Brotherhood's betrayal was made public, but this was established in the Toa Code since its creation. A Toa would only ever be in a position to use a Makuta's mask if the Makuta had just died in front of them, most likely by the Toa's own hand.
*There is one exception, debatably two. Chirox and Mutran share the same mask. Some accounts theorize that Mutran initially had a different mask, and changed his mask in order to torment Chirox. Others say that the two always had the same mask, a symbol of their role as left and right hands of a greater whole. The Jultin is a matter of debate. The Jutin was Antroz's mask, but there are conflicting reports of his whereabouts just prior to the destiny war. A Matoran word for failure is 'spiriah', which is not only Makuta in origin, but constructed like a personal name. It is possible 'Spiriah' is in fact the Makuta of Zakaz expunged from history, and that Sipiriah donned an unpowered Jutlin in order to disguise their identity.
Rahi contain 'tags' within their core essence, instantly detectable and innately understandable by Antidermic creatures, but require a veteran archivist's knowledge to even to begin to comprehend for Protodermics. These tags are believed to be signatures by the Makuta who designed that Rahi species, maker's marks imbedded into their fundamental being. A codex of marks and their associated Makuta are on the Makoki stone, allowing for researchers to know precisely which Makuta created which Rahi. Curiously, there are tags within Rahi found nowhere upon the Makoki stone. The history of the Brotherhood begins with the formation of the Makoki stone, which suggests an early "generation zero" of Makuta born prior to the brotherhood. None of these elder Makuta have ever been successfully identified or contacted.
It is common belief that Antidermis was a byproduct of Protodermis synthesization. This is only partially correct. Antidermis was an attempt at artificial energized protodermis. Both substances are mutagenic, both components of a gestalt consciousness, but while energized is damnably finite, new Antidermis can theoretically be created forever.
The earliest design documents for the GSR were found recently. They revealed that the Great Beings initially wanted to build *6* vessels, at least some of which would have been made from Antidermis. Only one vessel was ever created, but the Great Beings reformulated this initial concept into another failsafe for the GSR. This should come as no surprise though. After all, Teridax's plan hinged on the fact that the Makuta are potentially destined to inherit the role of the Mata Nui intelligence.

Hello.
You may call me The Archivist.
Recently, I found myself being called to the muppetverse, specifically the online and offline spaces occupied by The Muppet Joker, also known as The Croaker, and his proclaimed brotherhood.
I have made this blog to document and investigate this...occurrence. This phenomenon seems to be linked with greater occult forces, and it is my charge as the Archivist to record, preserve, and organize the legacy of these dread powers.
I am not, nor do I intend to become, and active player in this drama. I am merely a humble observer. A historian. A researcher. A ceaseless watcher of the Fear in the Felt.
Welcome to the Muppet Archives.
INDEX:CID | INDEX:ENTITIES | INDEX:BROTHERHOOD & FANBLOGS
I intend to organize and archive the current information, but this is...an ongoing situation and therefore requires constant surveillance. As such, I hope that those of you who are also watching, or better yet are active participants of the Brotherhood or its rivals, submit your statements about what you have observed, heard, or otherwise bore witness to.
Please be sure to somehow indicate your identity in a way unique to you (be it name, an emoji sign off, etc) so that your statement may be properly catalogued.

The Pentagram ⛥ Talon Abraxas As will be seen, all mysteries of magic, all symbols of the gnosis, all figures of occultism, all kabbalistic keys of prophecy, are summed up in the sign of the pentagram, which Paracelsus proclaims to be the greatest and most potent of all signs. - Éliphas Lévi
