THE BAGHDAD BATTERY

In June 1936, Iraqi railway-construction workers involved in earth-moving operations discovered an ancient grave under a stone slab. Over the next two months, the Iraq Antiquities Department removed approximately 613 beads, engraved bricks, clay figurines, and an ancient electric battery dating from between 248 BC and AD 226. Comprised of a copper cylinder and an iron rod, the battery was probably used by Baghdad silversmiths-fifteen centuries before Luigi Galvani's famous experiment in which he produced enough electric current to cause a frog's legs to twitch.

Archaeologist Wilhelm Konig wrote: "Something rather peculiar was found... A vase-like vessel of light yellow clay ... contained a copper cylinder which was held firmly by asphalt... [and] a completely oxidized iron rod.. After all the parts had been brought together and then examined in their separate parts, it became evident that it could only have been an electrical element. It was only necessary to add an acid or an alkaline liquid..."

At the Berlin Museum in Germany, Konig noticed similar cylinders from Iraq; all had iron and bronze rods and asphalt stoppers, which were corroded as if by acid. He surmised that at least ten batteries had been run together to reach a voltage output that was capable of electroplating gold and silver jewelry. In Mesopotamia gold and silver plating goes back 2,000 years, and in Bulgaria, 4,000 years. Museums around the world contain objects in which layers of gold are too thin and smooth to have been applied by beating or gluing. Could they have been electroplated?

Replicas of the batteries were made in two separate experiments conducted in the United States. A current of half a volt was achieved and lasted eighteen days. A 5 percent electrolyte solution, using vinegar, wine, or copper sulphate, was employed.

I'd love to hear about metals! Specifically silver.

Does silver get work hardened like bronze? Does silver alloy with iron or steel? If so would such an alloy be useful as a weapon or would it be too soft/brittle (i know it would depend on the ratios of the potential alloy so mostly iron seems like the best shot).

I'm looking at making a werewolf hunter for DnD and this stuff seems interesting for their weapons.

Sorry for letting this sit unanswered for months, but I'm finally getting to it!

So silver is not a metal I have a ton of experience with, but I'll say what I know.

Work hardening is a thing that happens in every metal, actually! Solid metals, when they solidify from liquid, form crystals. These crystals, in their perfect form, are VERY strong. If you assume a perfectly monocrystalline metal, it will perfectly elastically deform (that is, stretch like a spring, but not permanently deform) until it hits its ultimate tensile strength, which requires quite a lot of force! However, most metals do not behave this way in reality. Metal as you most commonly find it is made up of a bunch of imperfect crystals smushed together. It's these "grain boundaries" that weaken metal, and within the crystals, there are imperfections known as "dislocations" which allow the metal to plastically (that is, permanently) deform. When worked, these dislocations are pushed towards grain boundaries or the edges of the material, reducing the materials ability to plastically deform, and causing work hardening.

As for silver weapons, to my knowledge, silver doesn't alloy with iron, and therefore not with steel either (which is just iron with a higher carbon content). It does alloy with copper, such as in sterling silver (which usually only has up to 7.5% copper, to strengthen it slightly, but it's still not a strong enough material to make a full weapon from. You could potentially coat a bronze weapon in sterling silver if you wanted a weapon with a thick silver coating, but for a stronger overall sword or such, you'd probably want a steel weapon with a thin silver coating, either by electroplating or by chemical means.

With a career spanning over 5 decades, American modern artist, educator and activist Ruth Asawa became well renowned for her innovative abstract wire sculptures. 

Born to Japanese immigrants in 1926, Asawa spent her early childhood years growing up on a truck farm. It was this environment that nurtured Asawa’s interest in natural and organic forms and materials, which had a major influence on her work all throughout her career. 

Asawa attended Black Mountain College from the years of 1946-1949. Here, she received mentorship from artist and former Bauhaus teacher Josef Albers, who would eventually introduce her to the technique that would begin her interest in creating wire sculptures.

LOOPED WIRE SCULPTURES

In 1947 Asawa visited Albers whilst he was on sabbatical in Toluca, Mexico, where she learned a wire-crocheting technique; similar to a technique used by locals who made baskets from galvanised wire. In the 1950’s, Asawa created her first series of crocheted wire sculptures. 

When displaying these pieces, the shadows created by the sculptures is an element that is almost as important as the sculpture themselves. 

“A continuous piece of wire, forms envelop inner forms, yet all forms are visible (transparent). The shadow will reveal an exact image of the object.”

Asawa utilises the shadows which show a slightly manipulated variation of the original sculpture; as per the above quote, the shadow may obscure where one form stops and another starts, or any visible joins, creating a fluid image. 

These form of these sculptures have been described as "a shape that was inside and outside at the same time,” as they embody multiple material states at once; both interior and exterior, volume and line.

TIED WIRE SCULPTURES

In the 1960’s, Asawa began experimenting with a new way of working with wire, creating tied wire sculptures. These sculptures embody Asawa’s interest in organic and naturally occurring forms, as she explores the relationship between roots and the branches that exist because of them.

Overtime, these pieces gradually became more abstract and geometric as Asawa progressed working with this form; sometimes Asawa chose to galvanise the final piece. This way of working stemmed from an event where a friend brought Asawa a desert plant and suggested she drew it; she found it challenging to draw the tangled form in a 2D format, and chose to create a wire sculpture based on the plant allowing her to better understand the structure of it. The aim of these pieces was to explore the relationship between roots and the forms they produce; emphasising that roots are an origin point and an integral part of a bigger structure. 

ELECTROPLATING

In the 60s, Asawa recruited the help of a plating company who offered to help her clean her complex wire sculptures. When visiting the establishment, Asawa noticed copper bars in the plating tank; they possessed a green patina and gritty texture which Asawa was captivated by. Intrigued by this effect, Asawa asked if it would be possible to achieve the same results with her tied wire sculptures, thus leading to her experimentation with electroplating. 

After a process of trial and error, they found that reversing the electroplating process gave the sculptures the colour and texture that Asawa desired. She constructed a sculpture using copper wire, and it was then left in a chemical tank for months. This resulted in the sculpture forming layers of green rough textured skin, akin to the bark of a tree or coral. 

CASTING

Also in the 60s, Asawa experimented with cast forms.

The process involved creating a wire form, which Asawa dipped in wax, then finally casted it in bronze. Asawa experimented with using various materials during this process, such as paper, bakers clay, wire and even persimmon stems.

Asawa was enthralled by the layered process of creating these pieces; taking an idea from a material, adding to the piece using wax which then creates a mould, and finally seeing the piece finalised in bronze.
