A more discrete Shakespeare tribute on the side of the pub.
The beautiful shiny development "The Stage" has a manky old substation in the middle of it - I assume this gets moved or incorporated into the next stage of the building...

We carried on walking through the Principal Place development (the new HQ of Amazon UK) then past this interesting looking building on Worship Street - it has exceptional levels of security - assume it is some key piece of infrastructure.

Bridge 54
Broadgate Circle, Bishopsgate Without, City of London
Broadgate is an area of London close to Liverpool Street Station, just outside the walls of the City of London.  Its redevelopment was “launched” in 1985 by Margaret Thatcher,  enhancing her legacy with acres of huge and grandiose buildings, many produced by old friends of this blog, Ove Arup.  I discovered it during the COVID pandemic, while walking from the gym to Moorgate tube station (passing the site of the Curtain Theatre, where Shakespeare performed).
The Broadgate website sets out its mission statement:  “Broadgate is a 32-acre central London neighbourhood; a diverse community where innovation meets finance and a public arena for new food, retail and culture.” But on a wet day in a substantially locked down London, a few weeks before Brexit, it does not feel like that.  The seething financial heart of London has shifted to kitchen tables and back bedrooms and to Paris and Frankfurt.  Almost no-one about.
The Broadgate website https://www.broadgate.co.uk/ offers many photographs of the area carefully selected to present the chosen image.  The pictures are heavily populated by many people demonstrating the diversity. They are all young, and almost all white, surely much less diverse than the actual reality, when there are any people there at all.
One of the features of the development is Broadgate Circle, a circular open area surrounded by immense buildings in the roaring style of the City of London at the turn of the 21st century.  It has a bridge across it, giving me an excuse to linger in the silence and take photographs. And here they are.

FIRST IMPRESSION: WatchPro visits latest Watches of Switzerland showroom in London’s Square Mile
Tumblr media
London’s financial district, including both the Square Mile and Canary Wharf, have been hollowed out by the pandemic. Tower blocks, trading floors and covid-19 do not mix, at least according to SAGE and the government ministers it controls. Most institutions have sent the majority of their highly paid employees home for most of this year and into next. That has not deterred Watches of Switzerland from pressing ahead with the opening of a new multibrand showroom in Broadgate, next door to Liverpool Street Station where our financial industry’s masters of the universe normally arrive on their daily commute. WatchPro visited at lunchtime the day after the new showroom opened and were kindly shown around by the group’s retail director Matt Shields. The small parade of stores at the base of 100 Liverpool Street, a gleaming 5-storey glass office block that sweeps around to Broadgate Circle where there is a cluster of fashionable bars and cafes that would normally be heaving with people grabbing lunch. It was much quieter on the day of our visit, just two days after non-essential retail was allowed to reopen in London under tier 2 restrictions, but it was not deserted on the streets or in the showroom, where a number of customer consultations were taking place — all carefully socially distanced, sanitised and masked-up of course.
