Hands-On With The Bell & Ross BR05 Chrono
Tumblr media
It’s been a bit over a year since Bell & Ross released their BR05 collection of watches, which we reviewed in detail right here. The BR05 offered the brand’s take on a square steel sport watch with integrated bracelet, joining others from the likes of Frederique Constant to Chopard. It seems Gerald Genta was on to something when he designed the Royal Oak and Nautilus in the ‘70s. The continued success of those two references (15202 and 5711, respectively) has sent other brands scrambling to produce their own variations of the formula. Of course, simply being a steel sports watch with an integrated bracelet is not a surefire recipe for success. How does it work for Bell & Ross? Well, that all depends on your expectations. Let’s first acknowledge that the modern boom we’ve seen with the AP and Patek are due in part to the hype generated by their limited supply, inflated resale value, and the prestige of having Audemars Piguet or Patek Philippe written on their dials. None of those things a great watch makes. What does make them great is their attention to detail. They are both sized perfectly, measure around 8mm in thickness, have beautifully textured dials, and boast exquisitely crafted bracelets, the sum of which make for a very comfortable, very subtle sports watch. Let’s be honest, though, they aren’t without fault and I’d argue neither are worth 2-3x their retail price. They are nice, comfortable sport watches from premier mainstream brands. Nothing more, nothing less.  Read the full article

Color Theory Pt. 2: How To Gift The Candy-Colored 2020 Rolex Oyster Perpetuals
Tumblr media
On Wednesday, we looked at three colors in the 2020 Rolex Oyster Perpetual Line: pink, coral red, and turquoise. Today, we’ll dive in with green, yellow, and bright blue. If you’ve purchased an OP as a holiday gift for a loved one, you’re probably thinking about how to present it. One of the best ways to highlight these gorgeous dials is through color coordination. Choosing a few gifts in the some color can hint at what’s to come, or provide the perfect accompaniment to a beautiful Swiss watch. Pair the new OP with any of the following items for creative presentation the recipient won’t forget!  THE 2020 OYSTER PERPETUAL IN GREEN Even three-year-olds know that green means start, and with the 2020 Oyster Perpetual with a Rolex-green dial, all systems are definitely GO. This iconic green hue has a long history in Rolex design, and it’s nice to see it show up on a dress watch. It’s smaller than the Hulk or Kermit, but this new OP definitely shares some DNA with those two beloved watches.   Image Source The holidays are all about relaxing, and this luxurious CBD-infused body lotion from Lord Jones is the perfect pathway to chill.   THE 2020 OYSTER PERPETUAL IN YELLOW  It’s hard not to be happy when you’re wearing yellow. The buttercup-tinted dial absolutely gleams against gray stainless steel, for a little bit of sunshine wherever you go. Someone who chooses a yellow dial definitely isn’t a shrinking violet. Here are three color-coordinated companion gifts for someone who lives Read the full article

Rolex GMT-Master II tops 2020 wish list
Tumblr media
Rolex took the top five places in Chrono24’s most popular models list 2020. The list has been shared alongside a trading update from the secondary market platform that suggests luxury watches were as popular as ever during one of the most challenging years in living memory for most. In some cases, the online watch specialist explained how the pandemic has actually increased the desirability of certain models. In March 2020, as COVID-19 was forcing more and more countries into lockdown, Chrono24’s market experts observed a sharp decrease in sales of about 20%. The unprecedented nature of the pandemic had people concerned less about luxury goods and more about making sure they had access to daily essentials. Only three weeks later, the winds were already changing. Sales numbers began to rise rapidly around the world and have since remained stable at about 13% above pre-coronavirus levels with Rolex leading the way in this sense. The pandemic has also led to a rush on certain models. For example, Swiss luxury watch manufacturer Omega had already created a limited-edition timepiece in honour of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. With the postponement of the Games until 2021, these watches suddenly became rare “misprints,” and searches for this model jumped by a staggering 200% on Chrono24. Likewise, in March 2020, it was announced that the premiere of the next Bond movie was being delayed. This triggered a 40% increase in searches for watches worn by James Bond on Chrono24. How To Be A Jerk When You Travel w/ Amanda Cerny (Lesson 5)
Tumblr media
When spreading a deadly virus is no longer a thing, you’ll need to get back to basics to be a jerk when you travel. Traveling sucks because you are forced to deal (and corporate) with other people. HOWEVER, today’s lesson from the publically-canceled-16-times Brie Summers ISN’T about how to be a good co-traveler (because where’s the fun in that!?), it’s about how to be the worst commuter because you thrive off other people’s misery. HOW TO BE A JERK IN A HOTEL Hotels are a jerk’s paradise. You pay for one small room in a giant building full of many people, and you’re entitled to act like it’s your own personal mansion. Be sure to trash your room and be as loud as possible. Remember: since you paid for the space, you’re entitled to do whatever you want. HOW TO BE A JERK IN TRAFFIC Make your daily commute more fun for you (and more miserable for everyone else!) by being on your phone while you drive. Did the light just turn green? Don’t accelerate - first finish your text and then slowly continue your drive. Need to switch lanes? Don’t bother with a turn signal - other drivers will figure out what to do when they see you unexpectedly swerve into their lane! HOW TO BE A JERK ON AN AIRPLANE Now, for the most fun place on Earth to be a jerk, 35,000 feet above it. If hotels are a jerk’s paradise, airplanes are a jerk’s jungle gym. It’s a great place for us to play around, try stuff out, and make other kids cry. If you like to vape - don’t let your airline’s prohibitory policy s Read the full article

“It Sent Tingles Down My Spine For Hours”: Owl Lands On This Photographer’s Lens, Ends Up Blending In Perfectly
Tumblr media
Photography is all about catching that perfect moment. And depending on what you’re catching, that moment might be a mere second that’s just too hard to snap because it happens so fast, or it can be an hour, but it’s an hour every fifty years or so. In any case, moments are precious because of this. So, let’s consider one such precious, once-in-a-lifetime moment: the time this one owl decided to come chill on this one wildlife photographer’s photo lens. Yep, this exact thing happened to photographer Scott Dere, but thanks to the quick and tactful reflexes of photographer Beaumon Day, we now have a photo of it! Imagine being a wildlife photographer and having the wildlife come to you like this? Image credits: Beaumon Day Photographers Beaumon Day, with whom Bored Panda got in touch, and Brooke Bartleson were out in the wild looking to snap some pictures of great gray owls. The two had just spent 2 hours hiking in the woods with no luck when they met Scott Dere of The Element of Nature, who was also out owlspotting. After a short chat, they parted ways, but moments later, Scott called them over, hinting he’d spotted an owl “Scott was giving us a thumbs up from a couple hundred yards away (thanks Scott!). We couldn’t believe that he had just found an owl where we were! We went back and joined him and sure enough, there was a great gray owl perched about 10 feet off the ground in a pine tree—such camouflaged birds!” said Beau. He continued: “We watched it for a few minutes wh Read the full article

List vs. Ask: Comparing Steel Rolex Prices at Retail to Prices on the Secondary Market
Tumblr media
It's no secret that many watches inside Rolex’s metal vary will be troublesome to come back by at retail costs. With wait lists stretching for weeks to months to even years, relying on the seller and the mannequin reference, many collectors at the moment are turning to look at resellers and the gray market to chop their wait time considerably. Naturally, working by these channels searching for in-demand timepieces comes each at premium and with elevated danger. Value hikes of 20, 30, 50, even 100 % are widespread for a lot of fashions, and the presence of, let's assume, less-than-authentic watches continues to sow mistrust inside the on-line market particularly. Shopping for a watch on-line is tough sufficient, so we wrote a guide earlier this year that can assist you navigate that terrain. At the moment we might be evaluating the bottom listing value of in-production metal Rolexes to their present lowest asking costs on Chrono24 — a preferred watch reselling platform — and WatchBox, a good, resell-focused seller — to present you a way of the widespread going costs of well-liked fashions. We organized the listing so as from the bottom to the very best share change in value from retail to resell. Rolex Datejust (-4.2% to +19.88% and Above) Kicking off our listing is the broadly beloved Rolex Datejust. Datejusts today embody a big swath of reference numbers, types, colours, and sizes, so we centered on 4: the Datejust 36 with a domed bezel (Ref. 126200), the 36 with a flute Read the full article

In-Depth: How Audemars Piguet Made Black Ceramic The Hottest Material In Watchmaking
Tumblr media
A few weeks ago, Audemars Piguet dropped the Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked in black ceramic, utilizing their new-normal strategy of slipping the watch onto a product page on their website, without a press release or media blitz. They knew they didn't need either. The collector community and general Watch Internet hyped it up for them, and you couldn't browse Instagram without seeing pictures of the watch and comments about the watch every few posts and Stories. This thing is one of the hottest watches of the year, not to mention one of the hardest to get. It reveals a ton about Audemars Piguet as a brand, contextualizes the broader state of the watch industry, and illustrates how AP managed to turn a millennia-old material into a must-have. The IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, the first watch with a black ceramic case. Before we get into the nuances of the black ceramic Royal Oaks, of which the Double Balance Openworked is just the latest, a quick primer on ceramic: Ceramics are essentially materials composed of minerals and binder that are heated at very high temperatures until their chemical compositions become a glass-like solid. Humans have been making ceramics for over 25 millennia, with the earliest earthenware pots going back to before 24,000 BC.  The modern ceramics used in watchmaking adhere to this basic definition, but they're a far cry from those used to make dishes and vases. They're modern compounds called oxide ceramics that can be u Read the full article

Review: The Baltic Aquascaphe GMT
Tumblr media
Imagine yourself at a watch counter, somewhere in Europe. You want to pick out a new travel companion while on your big Swiss ski trip. It’s the mid-1960s, right at the height of the “Golden Age” of air travel. It was a time when you had to dress up to get on a plane — suit and tie were required, real meals were served, smoking was practically encouraged, and you could actually stretch your legs out in front of you (8+ hours in a smoke and booze filled tube with no noise cancelling headphones or in-flight movie sounds a bit hellish to me). Despite the health concerns and prohibitive cost, there’s no denying that nostalgia for the 1960’s is still strong even today. Back to the watch counter — You want a new watch that can track the time where you are, but also what time it is back at home. Something with a GMT function is a no-brainer. It’s very easy to picture the new Baltic GMT Aquascaphe right alongside a shiny Rolex GMT Master 1675 or a slightly more funky Zodiac Aerospace GMT. What are you reaching for? Today, we’re going to pretend that we picked up the new Baltic GMT Aquascaphe. While the 1960’s are long gone, the appeal for vintage and vintage-inspired watches is stronger today than ever.  Baltic’s charming take on the GMT is inspired heavily by the original GMT watches of the 1960’s. A modestly-sized 39mm case, two-tone GMT bezel coloration, and beads of rice bracelet represent the vintage aesthetic, but the watch is firmly modern in construction and materials. Why the Base Panerai is Still King
Tumblr media
Of all the watches beloved by watch enthusiasts, there is still something special about a Panerai Luminor with no running seconds hand. The PAM112 pictured below (crown guard removed for servicing) is shown with a gang of other coveted watches in for servicing at The Art of the Watch in Portland, Oregon. Photo by @art_of_the_watch Clearly, the Panerai is the simplest and boldest of the watch designs. It’s strikingly plain, super-clean and stands out with its sharp contrasting hands and dial markers. While chronographs possess beauty in complexity, the wrist presence of a watch that does nothing else but show the time stands out. As described on Watchbox.com: “A black dial offers just the essentials. Two hands, both black-oxidized, trace the arc of time. Due to the matte black base of the dial, only the lumed elements of the hands stand out. A ‘sandwich’ dial hews to the same construction practices pioneered and sustained since the 1930s; a black stencil dial bearing the indices and numerals is superimposed atop a fully-painted luminescent disc.” Photo @legacywatch_authentic The version of this watch that’s available now (new from an authorized dealer) is the PAM00560, which features an in-house manual-wind movement with an 8-day power reserve (vs. the Unitas/ETA movement in the 112).  Both are a joy to wear and possess that unmistakable brand identity from afar. If you require a running seconds hand, there are Luminor models available with a small-seconds configuration, Read the full article

Grand Seiko shows its global ambition with opening of two boutiques this month
Tumblr media
If the scale of Grand Seiko’s global ambition has not been clear enough in this, the 60th anniversary for the Japanese watchmaker, you need only look over The Pond to the United States where two boutiques are opening in a single month. New York will get its own monobrand on the famous Madison Avenue in December while Miami will welcome a showroom into its Design District. They follow the opening of Europe’s first Grand Seiko showroom in Paris earlier this year and the rebranding of a Seiko store to Grand Seiko in London’s Knightsbridge. “We are extremely excited to be expanding our footprint in the US to allow consumers the opportunity to experience our brand with multiple locations” says Grand Seiko Corporation of America president Brice Le Troadec. “Sharing Grand Seiko’s appreciation for inspired artistic design and luxury, New York City and Miami were a natural choice when considering where to open our Grand Seiko boutiques.” There had been speculation that Grand Seiko would open boutiques in partnership with a major group like Watches of Switzerland or Bucherer, or one of the larger independents, following a number of successful pop-up installations with partners. Instead, its first stores in the US will be directly owned and operated. Rather than competing with existing authorized dealers, Grand Seiko suggests the boutiques will raise awareness for the benefit of its entire network. “Both boutiques will function as destinations for educating local and internationa Read the full article

Ever Heard of the Kentucky Meat Shower? No? Well, Good News, it’s a Nightmare
Tumblr media
Getty Images I’m sorry in advance for what you’re about to read I don’t want to ruin your day, I really don’t. But unfortunately that’s not up to me, I have no choice, it must be done. You see, I, like so many poor souls, did not heed one of the internet’s many warnings, Beware All Ye Who Scroll Out of Boredom and Click on ‘Related Content’, for Unknown Terrors Await Ye. Down the rabbit hole I went, and now I’ve reached the bottom, and the only thing I can do with this newfound knowledge is share it with you, dear reader, so that you too might lie awake at night, whispering, “What the fuck,” to yourself. So, please, come on this journey and suffer with me. At 11 AM on March 3rd, 1876, it was a clear day in Rankin, Kentucky. Folks all over Bath County were getting dressed into seven different layers of clothes and talking about how the telephone is the work of the devil or whatever else people did back then, and Mrs. Crouch was making soap outside her home. Her soap crafting was unexpectedly cut short, though, when chunks of meat started to rain out of the sky. Yeah, you read that right. Chunks of meat fell out of the fucking sky. Pieces of red meat measuring about 2 inches long by 2 inches wide fell from the clear sky over an area about 100 yards. According to Mrs. Crouch the meat “fell like large snowflakes,” which is without a doubt the most horrifying mental image I’ve ever been burdened with. When questioned by reporters, both Mr. and Mrs. Crouch agreed that in their o Read the full article

This Family Started Doing ‘Real Life’ Christmas Cards 7 Years Ago And They Get Crazier As The Kids Grow Up
Tumblr media
Most families are trying hard to make the festive season picture-perfect, where everyone is happy, nobody talks politics, and the children don’t complain about their gifts. But the idyllic world is better left to Coca-Cola commercials, since the real-life festive season is often very different. And one family from North Carolina is celebrating precisely the imperfection of family Christmas. For the past 7 years, the Stanleys have been making Christmas cards where every family member participates. The result is both cute and hilarious since the little ones are pictured wreaking havoc in the house and things get messy, and oh boy, it does feel out of control. But isn’t that the whole beauty of winter holidays? “The very first time we tried to take a ‘traditional’ Christmas card photo we had hilariously bad results. From there the tradition was born—instead of trying to send perfect cards, we would send something that represented the chaos of parenting,” the Stanleys told Bored Panda previously. So let’s take a look at what the buzz is all about! More info: Instagram (Jonathan Stanley) The Stanley family from North Carolina has been capturing the essence of raising their kids in Christmas cards for the past 7 years Bored Panda reached out to the creative dad Jonathan Stanley who has been doing these real-life Christmas cards with his family every year since 2014. Jonathan previously told us that the idea came when the traditional photo didn’t go according to plan. “We were Read the full article
