RIP Timothy West (20.10.1934 - 12.11.2024)
"We met when we were cast with small parts in that really boring play, so had both brought the crossword to stop us going mad. We saw each other across the rehearsal room doing it, so decided to sit together. Then we couldn’t record because of the strike one day so we went to the cinema, Pru and I, to see The Grass is Greener with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. The show was cancelled, but a bit later Pru sent me a card saying ‘they’re reviving that terrible play, are you in it?’ I wasn’t but we started writing to each other then."
"Humour is vital, and respect for what people do and what people think. Kindness is important, and we’ve always had the same humour, laughed at the same things, been interested in the same things, got cross about the same things. And been in the same business. We have often been away from each other work-wise and therefore we’re always very glad to see each other again."

I genuinely hate Rupert Campbell Black (and not even in a fun way) but sometimes I just have to begrudgingly admit that Alex Hassell is actually really really good at his job
#he literally has nothing going for him in the attractiveness scale for me#and the character genuinely disgusts me#but Alex hassell does know how to put on the rizz I have to admit#nothing will get me to support Rupert x taggie though#also he seems to be falling into the ‘seemingly boring British actor dude I don’t even find physically attractive but will listen to talk#for hours on end’ category#rupert campbell black#alex hassell

I find it amusing that Britworth is a popular headcanon, yet everytime the games have had someone voice him in a British accent; pretty much everyone in the fandom has hated it.
#ace attorney#miles edgeworth#for reference dd and plvsaa both have the actors put on a british accent for the character#while his voice in dd is just unfitting and doesn't match my head voice for him the voice in the crossover is actually terrible#some say the ot voice was british sounding but i can't tell where they're coming from

wait can you elaborate on "#not to be european on main but it's one of asoiaf's most tellingly american features to me" because I've never really considered this before
Well, if you look at the time frame of Westeros post Targaryen conquest that's roughly the same distance between the foundation of the USA and when GRRM started writing asoiaf, so there might be a (conscious or subconscious I can't tell, but it wouldn't suprise me if it was intentional) correlation with placing "the birth of this country as we know it" at that specific point in time. Which ties back to that feeling of "the beginning of history" while acknowledging that there has been a history before, but it's a lot more nebulous and badly documented and it involves ethnicities that are considered "native" vs more recent migrations (First Men vs Andals).
And it's something you don't really get to perceive from a European perspective because sometimes you might be living in a country that, in its current form as a nation state, is actually younger than the US (like Italy or Germany), but that state and its identity exists in continuity with what was there before, going back to several centuries. There are cultural and material callbacks to that history in your everyday life, be it the language you speak or still using very ancient buildings that sometimes even maintained their original purpose. I don't want to sound blasé but from that vantage point "300 years ago" is "a long time ago, but not that long". This is not a value judgment, and of course the key reason is colonialism -- I just think there are some contextual elements that might lead to a different perception of history. It's all relative in the end
#replies#not tagging this bc tbh this isn't even meta just a feeling i get sometimes while reading the books#like of course it's this huge continent but they all speak a common tongue. of course#which again i don't think is bad! grrm shouldn't pretend not to be american to write his fantasy#i actually thought the hard line 'british actors only' they had for the show save few exceptions was kinda silly#sort of like the thing about expecting shakespearian english accents from ancient romans (???)#like who cares. none of those characters are british. the fantasy ones don't exist and romans were from all over europe and the med#anyway!

Time for some actor trivia!
In the 1981 film Excalibur, the adult Mordred was played by Robert Addie.
In the 1984 TV film Morte D'Arthur, Mordred was played by Nickolas Grace.
That same year saw the debut of the TV show Robin of Sherwood, which ran until 1986, in which Robert Addie and Nickolas Grace appeared together as the recurring villains Guy of Gisburne and the Sheriff of Nottingham respectively.
(By the way, if you guys haven't seen the show--watch it. Watch it now. Also check out the soundtrack by Clannad, who recently released an extended version of the soundtrack album Legend).
The two would appear again in the 1998 TV miniseries Merlin, in which Grace played Sir Egbert and Addie played Sir Gilbert. (Fun fact: composer Trevor Jones did the score both for Excalibur and for Merlin).
Why am I pointing this out? Because Robin of Sherwood was one of my favourite TV shows ever (I got super into the legends of Robin Hood when I was ten), and seeing a clip of Robert Addie in Excalibur on YouTube got me curious about seeing the movie, which I now consider my favourite ever Arthurian film. The 1998 Merlin meanwhile, having first watched it at the tender age of around seven or so, was what got me into the Arthurian legends in the first place. So seeing these two actors recur in these pieces of media that made an impact on me and my interests is something I just find fascinating.

The only superhero-underwear issue I've ever seriously put time into pondering is Kate when she had the onesie with the hip cutouts... was it like. a thong or a g-string that attaches to her belt
See now, that's an actual practicality question that's worth examining! Kate's suit is based on a costume worn by Dame Diana Rigg on the 60s TV show, The Avengers. As you can probably imagine, The Avengers-- which was a British espionage and action series-- has had a lot of influence on superhero comics. Rigg's character, Emma Peel, is considered a style icon, and was known for wearing catsuits which drew influences from contemporary fashion. Several other Marvel characters were inspired by Emma Peel-- Natasha's classic catsuit and Jean's Black Queen getup are both based on things she wore on The Avengers, and if I recall correctly, Emma Frost may be named after her. But if you look through a gallery of her costumes, you'll probably recognize a lot of design elements.
Anyways, there was a legible 60s-70s aesthetic in Fraction and Aja's Hawkeye, so the inspiration makes sense to me. But as you can see, the cutouts in Rigg's costume are smaller, and a bit higher up. It's much easier to imagine how she would have managed undergarments in this suit, and while I haven't watched the episode it appears in, I doubt that either the character or the actress had to do quite as many extreme stunts as we've see from Kate in her tenure as Hawkeye. The low belt around Kate's hips is also a signature Emma Peel accessory, but I gotta say, it make a lot less sense around the enlarged cutouts. In Young Avengers, McKelvie just kinda filled them in-- there are still style lines forming circles on her hips, but no exposed skin. With the belt and shoulder details, it still reads perfectly as a Rigg homage, so for me, it's the superior version.
Anyways, I don't actually have an answer for you! Sorry! It's a really cool costume that represents a neat piece of fashion history, and it was very well-chosen for the book and character, but it does look a bit uncomfortable, and I don't think there's a practical explanation. I definitely get why this suit was phased out, but I'm sad that was replaced by such an understated M C U type of look.
#kate bishop#hawkeye#diana rigg#emma peel#I found an article explaining how the classic Hellfire Club and most of its members are all references to characters and storylines from#the Avengers (british tv show). The Hellfire Club itself is both a real thing and a stock name for secret societies in a certain period of#british media. And a lot of the members names are mashups of character and actor names.

Single most jarring thing about baldur's gate is not any of the extremely well-written plot twists it is not the Emperor reveal it is not the time you jump down a hole in moonrise towers and find yourself in the Mind Flayer Flesh Pit NO. The most jarring thing in baldur's gate is when you hear Ketheric Thorm talk for the first time and, in this game of 100% English accents, he is the sole fucking american.
#i mean for fucks sake why would you do that#like dont get me wrong im a fan and i think his voice actor is good hes just. so weirdly not british#i dont think i emphasised enough how out of the multiple hundred speaking characters in this game he is the ONLY ONE that sounds like that.#larian what the FUCK.#lich says shit#bg3

enjoyed wonka. my review is that timothy candelabra was not half insane enough. there was that Wonka Glint in his eye like twice but it felt forced. with paterson joseph and mathew baynton serving absolute evil chocolatier cunt opposite him it was like timmy was in a whole different genre. they were 100% committed, singing about chocolate fraud like if their fan dance wasn't sexy enough their chocolate monopoly would crumble and tim reacted like hwuh? like girl if you are not going to commit to the chocolate is life chocolate is love chocolate runs this damn town genre why are you here!
#wonka#wonka spoilers#perhaps. there is a loose wonka spoiler#simon did amazing the story was amazing despite the few american actors having to go up against literal legends of british tv#and not quite meeting their level of intensity. i do feel bad for them it was like putting a small cat against a tiger#worth watching. i wonder if americans will enjoy it given their probable ignorance of peep show and why i found it so funny that uh#like all of the major side characters of peep show were in it???#however the fatphobia was. hmmmmm. not my cup of tea. it fucking sucked i do believe is the way to phrase it.#the only good thing is that there was absolute silence in the cinema at the fatphobic jokes and laughs at the other things so.#fuckin stopit brothers
