What to Do With Your Life For the Rest of May

The past two weeks have been amazing but also jam packed and exhausting for me! I got home on May 1 from visiting my daughter Sarah in Germany feeling very jet lagged, but so happy that I was able to travel and spend time with her and my sweet little Bristol. The next couple of days were a blur, but I still worked and even did some blog pictures. May 4 was my 58th birthday and my daughter made a delicious dinner for me and Graham and Hudson made me a beautiful birthday cake! The celebration continued with an amazing dinner on Wednesday at a restaurant called Machete. I highly recommend eating there if you’re local…it was one of the best meals ever! My advice is to go hungry and enjoy every bite. On Thursday, my sister and her husband took us out to dinner (it was a week of eating), and by the time Friday rolled around, I didn’t want to eat or go out anywhere, but Sunday was Mother’s Day and we went to brunch! Last week, I jumped back into blogging with both feet. I had a photo shoot on Thursday and did video and photos on Friday. I also started going to yoga again, and working out with my favorite trainer at a new gym. In between all of this, my hair color needed to be done, my nails were horrible and needed a fill in, I had a Hydrafacial and got my lashes done! Oh and did I mention that we got a new puppy? Whew…by the time yesterday got here, I was pooped! My philosophy…life is good when you’re busy!

This is my first “what to do with your life” post in a while and I have a lot to share, so grab a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and enjoy!

Speaking of food and wine pairings - I’m making this delicious Farro Tabbouleh with Burrata and Hummus from Half Baked Harvest for my book club dinner on Tuesday night. We read The Book of Longings by Sue Monk Kid. It’s a really wonderful book set in biblical times so I thought this dish would be totally appropriate. Even though white wine wasn’t consumed during that time in history, I will serve a white…most likely a Chenin Blanc to go with this!

Also happening in May is National Hamburger Day which is celebrated on May 28 to get people prepared for summer BBQ season. Most everyone loves a delicious burger and it’s one of the most beloved foods in America, so no wonder there is a whole day to celebrate it. Even though the burger was invented in Germany, it has become an icon of American culture, with Americans eating an average of 50 billion burgers every year. So fire up the grill, and get ready to celebrate National Burger Day.

In most areas of the country, May is a good month to plant a garden. If you’re new to gardening and thinking about planting one, you’ll find this article from Life Hacker really helpful!

‘See you again some day soon’

When I decided to research and write about the infamous Milligan’s Rats – the B-25 Mitchell bomber that crashed on Italy Hill, the highest elevation in Yates County, at the height of World War II – I’m not entirely certain what I expected or hoped to learn and share. Nevertheless, one piece I found out about the plane crash that killed six young men– including a Rochester native – was particularly gut-wrenching and heartbreaking, that being a note the pilot had left for his parents.

According to newspaper reports from the time – particularly the October 8, 1943 edition of the Penn Yan Democrat and the October 7, 1943 edition of The Chronicle-Express – the Army Air Corps plane and its crew had taken off from Chatham Field, near Mason, Georgia, that morning on a routine flight to Rochester. According to differing reports, the plane and its crew were either returning to their base or meeting up with other members of their squadron to proceed to an undisclosed destination for foreign service.

At approximately 3 p.m., in a blinding fog, the plane crashed on the 2,200-foot hill and left a 900-foot path of wreckage and bodies before its burning hulk came to a stop in a sheep pasture surrounded by woods. A farmer who was working in a vineyard a mile and a half from the crash scene reported he heard the roar of the plane’s motor as it soared through the sky, then the sound of the motor stopped followed by an explosion and then silence. The man traced the wreckage from a wisp of smoke floating skyward, and he hurried to the hamlet of Italy Hill to report his discovery and alert authorities to the scene.

Less than 20 minutes before the crash, according to The Chronicle-Express, 1st Lt. Willard E. Wilder, 26, of Rochester, the plane’s pilot, circled his parents’ summer home in the Bristol Hills and dropped a note to them as they watched from their yard, dipping his wings in salute and turning southward. The note his parents received reportedly read, “See you again some day soon. Take good care of yourselves. Goodbye for awhile. Love, Bill.”

According to eyewitnesses, the plane dropped beneath the clouds as it crossed Italy Valley, tipped its nose up into a climb, and neared the cloud-covered hills on the eastern side. However, blinded by the thick fog, the pilot likely did not climb high enough fast enough and crashed into the side of the hill. The plane slid uphill, according to The Chronicle-Express, until it came to a stop “above the fog and clouds in the clear light of a red sunset.”

The rest of the plane’s crew included copilot 2nd Lt. Alfred E. Sanders Jr., of San Antonio, Texas, navigator 1st Lt. Joseph P. Kappenmann, of San Rafael, California, gunner Staff Sgt. Joe A. Duncan, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and radio operator Staff Sgt. Paul F. Campeau, of Richmond, Wisconsin. A sixth man, Tech Sgt. Benjamin R. Mariole, an engineer, had been visiting his mother in Buffalo and had left her just a few hours before the crash happened.

Because he was the only soldier on the plane who was a native of the Finger Lakes region, much of news coverage focuses on Lt. Wilder. The articles note he was survived by his wife, Orpha, and their three-month-old son, Willard III, as well as his parents, two sisters, and a brother. Having graduated from Rochester East High School and Syracuse University, he entered military service in 1941 and was flight engineer and flight leader for Bombardment Squadron 106 at Chatham Field.

An ambulance from Thayer Funeral Home carried the bodies of the six soldiers to the funeral home, where members of Johnson-Costello American Legion Post maintained an honor guard. Lt. Wilder’s family came to Penn Yan to claim their son’s body and return it to Rochester, while Staff Sgt. Mariole’s family had his body transported to Hornell, the family’s hometown. The remains of the other four soldiers were taken to Syracuse by a New York State Police motorcycle escort and then sent to their home addresses.

Business Is Booming for the U.K.'s Spy Tech Industry

DRIVING INTO CHELTENHAM from the west, it is hard to miss the offices of Government Communications Headquarters, or GCHQ, the United Kingdom’s surveillance agency. The large, doughnut-shaped building sits behind high-perimeter fencing with barbed wire and many levels of security. The facility – used to eavesdrop on global emails and phone calls – is located on the edge of the sleepy Gloucestershire town, which feels like an incongruous location for one of the world’s most aggressive spy agencies.

Cheltenham has a population of just 117,000 people, and GCHQ’s presence has turned the area into one of Europe’s central hubs for companies working in the fields of cybersecurity and surveillance. GCHQ says it employs almost 6,000 people in Cheltenham and at some smaller bases around the U.K., although the agency has in recent years secretly expanded its workforce, reportedly employing thousands more staff.

People in the area are now talking of a cyber “corridor” that stretches for 50 miles from Malvern, just north of Cheltenham, all the way to Bristol, where the Ministry of Defence has its equipment and support headquarters at Abbey Wood. Many quaint English towns, known for their farming and country pubs, have seen an influx of companies dealing in cybersecurity and electronic spying. Even office space on former farms is being used for this burgeoning industry.

Chris Dunning-Walton, the founder of a nonprofit called Cyber Cheltenham, or Cynam, organizes quarterly events in the town attended by politicians and entrepreneurs. “Historically, there has been a need for the companies that are working here to be very off the radar with their relationships with GCHQ and to some extent, that does exist,” says Dunning-Walton. But since Edward Snowden leaked information in 2013 about GCHQ’s sweeping surveillance activities, the agency has been forced to come out of the shadows and embrace greater transparency. One consequence of this, according to Dunning-Walton, is that GCHQ is now more open to partnering with private companies, which has helped fuel the cyber industry around the Cheltenham area.

Northrop Grumman, the world’s fifth-largest arms manufacturer, has located its European cyber and intelligence operations in Cheltenham, where it has two offices in the center of the town. In the nearby city of Gloucester, a 20-minute drive west of Cheltenham, Raytheon, the world’s third-largest arms company, in 2015 opened a Cyber Innovation Centre that it says is focused on “big data, analytics and network defense.” BAE Systems Applied Intelligence, the cyber arm of the world’s fourth-largest arms company, also has offices in Gloucester, where it says it “delivers information intelligence solutions to government and commercial customers.”

Many of these companies are secretive about the work they do – especially when it concerns surveillance technology – and refuse to speak to the media. But L3 TRL Technology – which is based in Tewkesbury at the northern tip of this new cyber corridor – does grant an interview via email.

L3 says it provides “electronic warfare” equipment that can jam communication signals and gather intelligence. A spokesperson for the company says it plays “a crucial role in counter terrorism and the protection of military forces with our electronic warfare solutions.” He declines to provide any information about any of the company’s customers. But a video posted on YouTube by a Middle Eastern news agency reveals one potential client: It documents a recent meeting between L3’s parent company and Mohammed bin Zayed, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy commander of the UAE military.

According to government records, the U.K. has sold weapons and other equipment worth £7.3 billion ($9.9 billion) to the UAE in the past decade, including components for telecommunications eavesdropping technology and “intrusion software,” which is used to hack into targeted phones and computers.

Another Cheltenham-based company is CommsAudit, whose flagship product is a surveillance system called Spectra Black, a portable device that can monitor cellphone calls and other wireless communications. CommsAudit did not respond to a request for comment and does not publicly disclose the identities of its customers. The company was, however, showcasing its products at the 2017 DSEI arms fair in London, which was attended by government delegations from across the world.

Latching onto this wave of innovation, last year, the British government pledged £22 million ($30 million) in funding for a new cyber business park on a patch of land close to GCHQ’s headquarters. “It will act as a ‘honeypot’ for cyber security and high tech supply chain businesses,” the promotional literature said, creating 7,000 jobs, while boosting the number of private companies in the area that can then potentially become GCHQ’s clients. There is a lot of largesse to go around. GCHQ takes the majority of the share of the roughly £2.8 billion ($3.8 billion) budget for Britain’s intelligence services and has twice the number of personnel of MI5 and MI6 combined.

David Woodfine, a former head of the Ministry of Defence’s Security Operations Centre, worked inside GCHQ’s Cheltenham headquarters for two years. He left in September 2013 to found Cyber Security Associates, a Gloucestershire-based company providing cyber consultancy services to the public and private sector.

Woodfine says toward the end of his tenure at GCHQ, there was a realization that the agency needed to partner more with private industry. “From a GCHQ perspective, I think their whole attitude has changed from quite a hard approach – ‘we’ll keep everything in-house’ – to ‘actually, we need to open up.’ They changed their recruiting, their apprenticeship schemes, so they are attracting more young talent into their organization.”

The National Cyber Security Centre – which opened in 2016 under the remit of GCHQ – is currently piloting new “Cyber Schools Hubs” in Gloucestershire. The idea is to send staff into local schools to “encourage a diverse range of students into taking up computer science,” in effect grooming the next generation of cyber-competent spies.

GCHQ offers meager salaries compared to the private sector, but the agency can offer prospective employees the chance to work with technologies that they could not use anywhere else – because if they did, they would be breaking the law. “That’s a good way of retaining people on public sector pay,” says Woodfine. “So you can argue that they don’t join for the money, they join for the ability to learn and to test their techniques and their abilities.”

A GCHQ employee can work with the agency for a few years, learn about its tools and methods, and then take that knowledge with them to a job in the more lucrative private sector, where there are plenty opportunities for surveillance innovation. According to the London-based advocacy group Privacy International, the U.K. has 104 companies producing surveillance equipment for export to foreign governments and corporations. Only the United States – with 122 companies – has more.

SINCE 2013, SALES of surveillance and hacking technology have been controlled under the Wassenaar Arrangement, which was signed by 42 countries, including the U.S. and most of Europe. The arrangement is intended to prevent authoritarian regimes from obtaining arms and sophisticated spy tools that could be used to commit human rights violations. However, it is not legally binding. And the U.K. has continued to sell eavesdropping equipment to a number of countries with questionable human rights records, such as Honduras, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, China, and Qatar.

Inside the bustling Victoria train station in central London, Digital Barriers, the world’s premier video analytics company, has its offices. Video analytics sounds like an arcane branch of the high-tech industry, but in terms of surveillance technology, it is a field that has rapidly advanced in recent years. Zak Doffman, chief executive at Digital Barriers, founded the company in 2010 after recognizing that in the area of video intelligence, there was a gap in the international market. Digital Barriers’s technology is designed to analyze video – and identify people’s faces – in real time, where the cameras are placed, rather than having to rely on retrospective analysis.

In its London offices, the company demonstrates to this reporter how even with a scarf wrapped around a person’s face, its software can successfully identify them within a few seconds using a standard surveillance camera. Facial-recognition technology is notoriously inaccurate and can produce false positives, but Digital Barriers claims its software can pick out obscured and blurred faces in crowds and match them with photographs that are held on databases or published on the internet. It is, the company says, most useful for counterterrorism operations. But in the wrong hands, wired up to a nationwide camera network, the technology could potentially be used to trace the movements of millions of people in real time. “We built the business primarily in the public sector working for government agencies,” says Doffman. “We are now working increasingly in the private sector with the commercial customers.”

Digital Barriers’s website boasts that it has clients in more than 50 countries. Doffman won’t reveal the names of his customers, and when questioned about the export licensing process, he says the company’s products are exempt. “It’s not export control per se,” he says, “so there’s no formal restrictions on the technology.” What would he do if countries with authoritarian governments wanted to buy the system? Doffman says only that Digital Barriers has a “moral code on this stuff.”

People within this industry want the technology to remain uncontrolled; they argue that countries with authoritarian governments don’t want this type of video surveillance anyway. “Countries where you have a lot of corruption, the last thing they want is facial recognition,” says one industry source, because of elite factionalism. But that seems scant reassurance for dissidents living in dictatorships that can now freely access this technology at the right price.

Today’s kids will live through three times as many climate disasters as their grandparents, study says (Washington Post) Adriana Bottino-Poage is 6 years old, with cherub cheeks and curls that bounce when she laughs. She likes soccer, art and visiting the library. She dreams of being a scientist and she wants to become the kind of grown-up who can help the world. But if the planet continues to warm on its current trajectory, the average 6-year-old will live through roughly three times as many climate disasters as their grandparents, the study finds. They will see twice as many wildfires, 1.7 times as many tropical cyclones, 3.4 times more river floods, 2.5 times more crop failures and 2.3 times as many droughts as someone born in 1960. These findings, published this week in the journal Science, are the result of a massive effort to quantify what lead author Wim Thiery calls the “intergenerational inequality” of climate change. The changes are especially dramatic in developing nations; infants in sub-Saharan Africa are projected to live through 50 to 54 times as many heat waves as someone born in the preindustrial era.

YouTube is banning prominent anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content (Washington Post) YouTube is taking down several video channels associated with high-profile anti-vaccine activists including Joseph Mercola and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who experts say are partially responsible for helping seed the skepticism that’s contributed to slowing vaccination rates across the country. As part of a new set of policies aimed at cutting down on anti-vaccine content on the Google-owned site, YouTube will ban any videos that claim that commonly used vaccines approved by health authorities are ineffective or dangerous. The company previously blocked videos that made those claims about coronavirus vaccines, but not ones for other vaccines like those for measles or chickenpox. Mercola, an alternative medicine entrepreneur, and Kennedy, a lawyer and the son of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy who has been a face of the anti-vaccine movement for years, have both said in the past that they are not automatically against all vaccines, but believe information about the risks of vaccines is being suppressed. In an email, Mercola said he was being censored. Kennedy also said he was being censored. “There is no instance in history when censorship and secrecy has advanced either democracy or public health,” he said in an email.

Vaccine Mandates Kick In (1440) Tens of thousands of healthcare workers in New York risk being fired if they remain unvaccinated against COVID-19, as a state mandate went into effect Monday. Roughly 16% of the state’s healthcare workers, or about 83,000, aren’t fully vaccinated, and an estimated 8% haven’t received their first shot. An executive order from Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) signed Monday allows medically trained National Guard members to fill staff shortages if necessary. Workers fired for being unvaccinated will not be eligible for unemployment. Separately, a New York City vaccine mandate for educators in the nation’s largest school district becomes effective after school Friday—the teachers’ union says about 3% of its staff remain unvaccinated. In North Carolina, more than 175 healthcare workers at Novant Health have been dismissed after not complying with the company’s vaccine mandate. The various mandates have sparked ongoing protests, both in New York and elsewhere.

Ahead of winter hibernation, Alaska celebrates Fat Bear Week (Reuters) In Alaska, leaves are falling, daylight is dwindling and salmon-devouring brown bears are racing the clock to pack on the pounds they need to survive their winter hibernation. Unbeknownst to the enormous bruins, some of them are also competing in Katmai National Park and Preserve’s Fat Bear Week, Alaska’s annual celebration of gluttony and nature’s abundance. For seven days starting on Wednesday, wildlife fans will submit online votes in a playoff-style competition among 12 of the park’s fattest brown bears photographed at the salmon-rich Brooks River. Katmai’s bears are among the biggest in the world, thanks to the abundant runs of salmon that swim into the river system from southwestern Alaska’s Bristol Bay. Katmai’s bears, which number about 2,200, can grow to well over 1,000 pounds (453 kg) from summer feasting. They can also lose a third of their body weight during hibernation. Fat Bear Week becomes more popular each year, with online voting growing to nearly 650,000 votes cast in 2020 from 55,000 votes cast in 2018, said Naomi Boak, a Katmai media ranger. The popularity is easy to understand, Boak said. Fat bears bring joy to people, she said. “They get to do something and be healthy that we don’t get to do, and that is be fat,” she said.

America’s car crash epidemic (Vox) Driving is the most dangerous thing most Americans do every day. Virtually every American knows someone who’s been injured in a car crash, and each year cars kill about as many people as guns and severely injure millions. It’s a public health crisis in any year, and somehow, the pandemic has only made it more acute. Even as Americans have been driving less in the past year or so, car crash deaths (including both occupants of vehicles and pedestrians) have surged. Cars killed 42,060 people in 2020, up from 39,107 in 2019, according to a preliminary estimate from the National Safety Council (NSC), a nonprofit that focuses on eliminating preventable deaths. According to several traffic experts I spoke with, the explanation for the 2020 fatality spike is relatively straightforward: With fewer cars on the road during quarantine, traffic congestion was all but eliminated, which emboldened people to drive at lethal speeds. Compared to 2019, many more drivers involved in fatal crashes also didn’t wear seat belts or drove drunk.

Havana syndrome (WSJ) The CIA evacuated an intelligence officer serving in Serbia in recent weeks who suffered serious injuries consistent with the neurological attacks known as Havana Syndrome, according to current and former U.S. officials. The incident in the Balkans, which hasn’t been previously reported, is the latest in what the officials describe as a steady expansion of attacks on American spies and diplomats posted overseas by unknown assailants using what government officials and scientists suspect is some sort of directed-energy source. Still more suspected attacks have occurred overseas and in the U.S., the current and former officials said, along with recently reported ones in India and Vietnam.

Greece boosts its military, with French help (Guardian) Less than two weeks after France lost its submarine deal to the so-called Aukus Defense Pact between Australia, the U.S., and the U.K., a new buyer has stepped up. Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and French president Emmanuel Macron just signed a multi-billion euro military agreement that calls for France to deliver three state-of-the-art Belharra frigates to Greece by 2025. The option of a fourth warship is also included. Macron described his pact as part of a deeper “strategic partnership” between France and Greece to defend shared interests in the Mediterranean. Despite being among the continent’s smaller countries, Greek military spending far exceeds that of fellow states. Last year’s heightened tensions between Greece and Turkey over rival claims to offshore gas reserves in the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean led to Mitsotakis’ center-right government announcing a major weapons program aimed at modernizing Greece’s armed forces with the acquisition of fighter planes, frigates, helicopters and missile systems.

Business as usual for Afghan opium trade as Taliban ban goes up in smoke (Telegraph) The sacks full of thick, brown opium paste give off a distinctive smell as turbaned traders and farmers haggle over prices. The opium being freely bought and sold in the drug bazaars of southern Afghanistan will soon make its way as heroin into the country’s neighbours and then into the world beyond. It is a trade which, a month ago, the Taliban said they would stamp out in a repeat of a ban imposed under their 1990s regime. Opium growers in Helmand told The Telegraph they were again preparing to plant fields full of poppies, with the Islamist group having so far stalled on implementing a ban—one of a number of promises that appeared designed to please the West and have since been broken. It has raised fears that Britain could see a further influx of heroin as the Taliban choose to profit from taxing the trade instead of stamping it out. Afghanistan is by far the world’s largest opium supplier and is estimated to produce four-fifths of global supply. The drug accounts for 11 per cent of the Afghan economy, the United Nations estimated in 2018.

Young Iranians Increasingly Want Out (NYT) Amir, an engineering master’s student standing outside Tehran University, had thought about going into digital marketing, but worried that Iran’s government would restrict Instagram, as it had other apps. He had considered founding a start-up, but foresaw American sanctions and raging inflation blocking his way. Every time he tried to plan, it seemed useless, said Amir, who at first would not give his real name. He was afraid of his country, he said, and he wanted to leave after graduation. “I’m a person who’s 24 years old, and I can’t imagine my life when I’m 45,” he said. “I can’t imagine a good future for myself or for my country. Every day, I’m thinking about leaving. And every day, I’m thinking about, if I leave my country, what will happen to my family?” This is life now for many educated urbanites in Tehran, the capital, who once pushed for loosening social restrictions and opening Iran to the world, and who saw the 2015 nuclear deal with the United States as a reason for hope. Since 2018, many prices have more than doubled, living standards have skidded and poverty has spread, especially among rural Iranians. All but the wealthiest have been brought low. Divorce is up, fertility rates are down and many from Iran’s younger generation are postponing weddings and searching for ways to leave the country in the face of economic and political stagnation.

Bangkok on alert as 70,000 homes flood in Thailand (AFP) Thai authorities have rushed to protect parts of Bangkok from flood waters that have already inundated 70,000 homes and killed six people in the country’s northern and central provinces. Tropical Storm Dianmu has caused flooding in 30 provinces, with the kingdom’s central region the worst hit, the Thai Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said. The level of the Chao Phraya River—which snakes through Bangkok after winding almost 250 miles (400km) from the north—is steadily rising as authorities release water from dams further upstream. Soldiers on Tuesday set up barriers and sandbags to protect archaeological ruins and landmarks as well as neighbourhoods in the old royal capital Ayutthaya, about 40 miles north of Bangkok. There are hopes Bangkok can avoid a repeat of the catastrophic 2011 monsoon season, when it experienced its worst flooding in decades—a fifth of the city was under water and more than 500 people died.

Kishida To Become Japan’s Next Prime Minister (Foreign Policy) Japan’s ruling Liberal Democrat Party has backed Fumio Kishida as its new leader, effectively making him prime minister-in-waiting for the world’s third largest economy. Kishida, a former foreign minister, won out in a highly contested election, beating Taro Kono in a runoff vote on Wednesday afternoon in Tokyo after the two had virtually tied in the first round of voting. His inauguration as prime minister is now assured, as the LDP holds a comfortable majority in Japan’s House of Representatives. Although today’s vote represents the end of Kono’s leadership bid for now, the short shelf life of Japan’s prime ministers (Kishida will be the tenth in the past 20 years) means it’s unlikely he’ll fade into the background.

Ethiopia crisis ‘stain on our conscience’ (AP) The crisis in Ethiopia is a “stain on our conscience,” the United Nations humanitarian chief said, as children and others starve to death in the Tigray region under what the U.N. has called a de facto government blockade of food, medical supplies and fuel. In an interview with The Associated Press Tuesday, Martin Griffiths issued one of the most sharply worded criticisms yet of the world’s worst hunger crisis in a decade after nearly a year of war. He described a landscape of deprivation inside Tigray, where the malnutrition rate is now over 22%—“roughly the same as we saw in Somalia in 2011 at the start of the Somali famine,” which killed more than a quarter-million people. Meanwhile just 10% of needed humanitarian supplies have been reaching Tigray in recent weeks, Griffiths said. “So people have been eating roots and flowers and plants instead of a normal steady meal,” he said. But the problem is not hunger alone. The U.N. humanitarian chief, who recently visited Tigray, cited the lack of medical supplies and noted that vulnerable children and pregnant or lactating mothers are often the first to die of disease.

Modern art or theft? (Foreign Policy) A Danish art museum has been left significantly out of pocket (or helped finance a brand new work of art, depending on one’s perspective) after $84,000 in cash the museum had given an artist to recreate two of his works became the inspiration for a new piece: two blank canvases titled “Take The Money and Run.” Artist Jens Haaning had been commissioned by the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art in Aalborg to reproduce “An Average Danish Annual Income” and “An Average Austrian Annual Income,” two pieces which represented the total amounts using framed U.S. dollars. Museum authorities believe Haaning’s interpretation went beyond the usual artistic license and have given him until January to return the money.
