Peeta on the Brink(Peeta joins Squad 451) katniss POV

After s Boggs came to talk to me about Peeta's arrival we both walked back to the tent,

I overheard Peeta say: "...my final end but in all likelihood your lover will be safe, you will kill me before she gets hurt.” Gale shook, he was nervous and lookin at peeta like he was insane. He responded with contempt in his voice

"Well mutt then you should die!"

Gale pointing his gun at Peeta to kill him but Peeta had become good at moving undetected from his work at smuggling. He applied this, kicking Gale in his nuts with his iron prosthetic leg while grabbing Gale's gun. The gun fired a burst of shots that all missed Peeta who was under the ground, the fabric in the tent ripped from the impact of the bullets. Gale collapsed to the ground, Peeta threw his gun with such force that it broke a nearby window before resuming his attention to Gale. Peeta kicked his sides with such force that he moaned and rolled until he was before me and Bogs many yards away from the camp. Gale was practically thrown in the air before rolling. Gale screamed in pain and Boggs looked down to him his eyes filled with anger and screamed. "how dare you try to murder a member of the squad! and how stupid of you to mess with Peeta Mellark, next time you do this shit I am going to have you shot on sight! You are hereby stripped of rank" Boggs brought out handcuffs and cuffed Gale. "Katniss you walk gale to the nurse, I am expelling former soldier Hawthorne from this unit." Gale was bleeding in his sides from the force of Peeta's kick. I saw Peeta sipping his morphling as Jackson was cuffing him. "Won't this interfere with combat?" He asks, but Jackson answers "We shall take these off for the propos." Peeta continued to protest, "With what just happened with Gale how am I going to fight the capital if I will be gunned down beforehand by the people with the keys to my cuffs before I can snap a single peacekeepers neck?" But then Peeta's expression shows a frustrated empty look. "You know what? fuck it! just get it over with. I don't want to watch every last one of you all be blown up on suicide missions ordered by Coin to have you killed just fucking shoot me. Here I will go get Gale's gun. Have fun with those pods. Dealing with a unit who hate me and will gun me down before I can show the capital my wrath is not how I want to spend my last days on earth " "no you fucking won't! " Boggs says entering the tent after having Gale cuffed. As I watch Peeta begin to walk towards the broken window 3 guards tackle him. Boggs walks to Peeta who says to him "Your leader, Coin supposed that the propos needed 'colour' but I'm not here for propos and I suspect neither is anyone else. There never was avoiding the 76th Hunger Games, no matter which side won, but I will not play by the rules, I will take Snow’s men down with me!"

How am I going to take Boggs holo and assassinate Snow without Gale? There must be some way to get Boggs to reverse the decision.

Boggs ignores all the insinuations Peeta makes and says

"First of all I'm sorry about what happened with Gale, he is being cuffed, and will be expelled from this unit, you saved alot of lives in 13, and have worked tirelessly for the rebellion ever since, your efforts will not be in vain"

Peeta responds "no my efforts were In vain, and still are, you shouldn't be here Boggs, you don't deserve to die! I don't know what I was thinking I should have let Gale shoot me"

"The will to live is very hard to snuff out, dont chicken out on us now, soldier Mellark" Boggs replies before walking out.

Peeta is now deep in thought.

Peeta mutters

"What is this idiot thinking sacrificing himself for coin, why?" a tear forms from his eye as he watches Boggs leave and says the word "why?"

I tend to Gale who is in handcuffs and ask what happened while I was gone, Gale tells me how Peeta made insane ramblings about how he died in the capital 10 days before his capture and how he is his ghost seeking revenge, when confronted about choking me Peeta didn't bat any emotion talking about how the rescue came too late for Peeta." Peeta was never this open in 13 but much of this I already knew from monitoring him and hearing him reference peices of this. I always wondered what Peeta meant when he told Prim "I watched Peeta die" and Gale gave me a clue: the point where Peeta was replaced by the mutt, I imagine the capital burning down Peeta until there is nothing left of him we were only late by 10 days! Peeta is in a much worse state then when I left to squad 451. He is on the brink of going full mutt and he knows this. Gale asks "why does district 13 love him so much?" I do not answer, his concerns about the squad members from 13 hating him are unfounded. The way he looks at Boggs show they have interacted before and 3 of the 13 guards were determined to keep him alive. He is there Jabberjay symbolizing bravery and resilience. But he is a person to 13 and not just a symbol unlike me. Though some like Leeg 1 glare at him as he goes off about Coin, I just want this mutt to leave me alone!

Boggs returns and mentions a watch. When I ask about my rotation Peeta looks exacerbated. He does not mind or care when I say killing him would be like killing a capital mutt and that Johanna's right in response to Jackson's question about if I could kill him. Holmes interjects after I answer "See, you didnt need to ask, everyone in district 13 knows that she was with Gale even when Peeta was in the capital." But Peeta looks dead inside when I am confirmed for the watch. Then when he notices me, his eyes narrow and lips curl, he looks disgusted. Many are glaring at me.

Holmes said in response to Katniss "Peeta's right your a piece of work aren't you, jumping up so eager to shoot him look at you! It's disgusting! What is Boggs thinking! Holmes is smoking morphling.

Peeta looks at Finnick and says "ouch" referring to how cutting Holmes is being.

"I said last resort" Katniss said "All I meant is that I won't let Peeta's past interfere with my duties as a guard" Katniss says wiping tears (that she shed during her outburst)

Boggs: "That's right, Jackson when her shift?

Jackson: Midnight, and also she saved Peeta's life, you weren't there for that, soldier Everdeen won't kill Peeta unless she absolutely has to.

Finnick gives him a rope.

"Peeta sighed "In my sleep, either Katniss represents a Peeta that will never exist again, which is probably for the best, particularly for her or she is ripping my throat out manifesting lost memories" Peeta scoffed "and now she wants a guard over me, clearly acting out of a wound that is un-healable. but an escape from Katniss, from our sick history, is still possible, It's with this morphling that I will escape this pain, that my final days will not be spent reliving it." Peeta chuckled and held up his bottle of morphling, Finnick just nodded. After he put the bottle down Peeta thanked Finnick for the rope and concluded: “I'm so sick of the capital, and I'm so sick of Katniss, I don't think there is a resolution, she was touched, and suffocated and she hates me simple as that, with her outburst just now these actions continue to bring her pain and suffering."

No one gives Peeta any glare, they must think Peeta's right. Leeg even says "Peeta need not care about her that much, I'm glad he's trying to move on from her"

Peeta's comment hits me hard and I run out of the tent clutching the 13 bread and dropping my trey. He will leave me alone, as if he didn't try to choke me as if it's my fualt. It twists me He will die viewing me as a disgusting misfortune. I'm glad he is avoiding me. "So sick of the capital so sick of Katniss" begins playing in my head and the more I try to tell it to shut up the louder it plays. It becomes harder to monitor or stalk as Johanna calls it as Peeta acts like he just touched a hot oven whenever he notices me. And whenever he notices me? Peeta either gets right up walking to his tent or the mutt gives me a dirty look and begins drinking morphling to "escape" me. I have to be really stealthy, becuase I think he tolerated me stalking him before, but he isn't having it now. When he looks at me, indignation and an eye roll is added to his disgust. Sometimes when he is in an intense morphling haze he mutters, unable to notice me I hear him mutter "Kat-nis sm mm Lover Gale too should only be in me fucking memories!" I begin wondering what look his smug face would have if I shot his morphling bag with my bow. I will never be a memory! These thoughts overshadow the questions about what occurred with Peeta and Coin.

He later says to Boggs: "the real star crossed lovers are Gale and Katniss, the capital and Peeta did everything to keep them apart." Boggs says to Peeta "I know it's hard your life is falling apart but I would be a wreck just like you if I didn't have a plan,your right that this unit is more then a propo unit"

"What's the plan, Peeta asks? "Is it worth leaving your family to their fate for this plan?"

"No your right I'm destined to fall in battle but I will do more then dignify my death"

Peeta looks like he's about to cry again and chugs his morphling. "Boggs if you need any morphling I have plenty!" Boggs takes a bottle saying "Thanks!"

As I wince in disgust at Boggs taking Peeta's bottle I wonder the same thing, does he know about my plan?

Gale is put under arrest but Boggs cannot find a transport so Boggs is unable to have Gale sent to the prisons of 13. He is still cuffed, with Peeta the cuffs are only on as necessary like when parts of Peeta's body instantly gain rashes shaped like the cut from a knife or claw, not a punishment but a precaution, with Gale he has to sleep and eat with the cuffs on.

Peeta walks to Boggs his eyes filled with tears. He pleads with him to take me saying that the capital ordered pornography to be produced of the star crossed lovers. That I was a prostitute from the Seam but my true love was Gale. He claims that took advantage of this to rape me. "Peeta got what he deserved!" He says with conviction. Peeta concludes with "now do you see why she must be taken of the watch?" But Boggs is not having it, he replies simply "I don't care what shit the capital put in your head,Katniss is a member of the squad like any other." The worst thing is that there is no way the capital fabricated this, if anything they probably told Peeta I assaulted him but Peeta came up with this on his own probably drunk on morphling. Many happy memories are turned into sources of guilt for this Mutt, and are defiled. If the capital made Peeta forget he loved me, Peeta made himself believe that he hurt me. If it was possible for Peeta to come back to me, the images of rape would provide a stronger barrier to that then any amount of depictions of me as a mutt ripping his throat out. Even if he is lost taken by Snow, seeing the memory of Peeta and I in the train mutilated is enough to make me want to get out of the tent. But he follows and breaks his third window since he joined the squad. Since he came my plan to kill snow has been made more difficult first Gale tried to kill Peeta, and I can't take my mind off this assasin mutt as he calls himself. That's not mentioning that he is one fantasy knife stab away from trashing the tent. Peeta Is also urging everyone to desert the squad at every opportunity. Gale told me he told finnick that Coin would hurt Annie, Finnick has been drinking out of Peeta’s morphling supply ever since. I have not seen Mutt Peeta look so miserable since he returned from the capital his stares are cold enough to freeze the mellark bakery oven and are freezing everywhere he looks. At the rate hes going he's going to convert the squad into morphling addicts.

Peeta has music buds in his ear and he is playing a ancient metal song called "meltdown" the song sounds like my image of Peeta's head during an episode. It plays over and over again until Boggs tells him to turn it off. He sometimes drinks so much morphling that he vomits but he does not clean it, he wallows in his filth like Haymitch. There are empty morphling bottles all over the tent attracting flies. Finnick calls Annie and tells her to run to the forest and not look back everyone hears him. I tell gale that this is Peeta's 10th bottle, he says he only sees 6 but I tell him he drank some earlier and threw out the bottles. With Peeta this drunk, he doesn't notice me when I monitor him.

Boggs does nothing as he shares Peeta's views but thinks about a plan.

It's clear Peeta is in great trouble and his execution will involve me. I wonder if he is right about this unit being an execution and I begin to make plans to escape with Gale with Boggs holo. Whatever is planned with Peeta involved me and if me and Gale simply disappeared Coin would need to think of a new way to kill squad 451 giving Boggs time to figure out a new plan.

Boggs summons me to his tent I overhear him say "Peeta is right squad 451 is an execution not a propo unit and I'm sick of pretending it isn't"

Jackson says "then what should we do"

I walk in and Boggs says "I've heard you want to kill Snow, what's your plan?"

Peeta Snaps Concept

Fires burn fires burn FIRES BURN the demons, THE DEMONS, they scrape me and rip me apart. I try to be a great mutt in the service of the rebellion, rhis is what I was preparing for right? To harness the fires and aim it at the capital! BUBBLES SHINEY BUBBLES!! all the windows in my mind break, trains derail, fires burn, wires crack. Hold it together Peeta Boggs is Dead, BOGGS IS DEAD Coin murdered a valient warrior, the best Panem had to offer. I attack and kill a demon but I fight it was no Demon that was Holmes! And I almost hurt Katniss! Who appeared like one of ths demons. I run towards the water it looks so peaceful I run towards it so I can know it's peace. Hallucinations of coin and Snow tell me "no, you have to kill Katniss " but I put my middle finger in the air and say "Fuck you Coin!!." I can't hear much but Annie screaming. I see my life play before me it's all hazy and I run towards the peaceful water, I will become one with the water. Everything then turns black am I dead yet? Is there an afterlife and am I there? BUBBLES SHINY BUBBLES!!! But I hear Johanna and Katniss talking and I cry. I am useless, it's bad enough that I have to be part of an execution by Coin but I have to witness myself kill the squad. There will be no salvation. The misery unbearable so I see if I can feed the rats using my handcuffs. But it does not work, then I try to leave the room and jump out the window. I run out of the closet door, Annie is in the other closet. And Katniss screams "Peeeta!" I am restrained by Jackson and Katniss but I try to break free to die. I am thrown to the floor and the Demons come back to hurt me. I shiver and my skin is filled with hives. I can't hear anything anyone is saying, but feel paralyzed Katniss grabs my hands, so hard that it is one of the few physical sensations I can feel until she presses her lips into mine. I remember countless things and feel safe, when the demons that guard the memories poke at me I focus on Katnisses lips and the pain goes away. When we have to grasp her air, I pull her back in so more memories can return to me. She pulls me in the next time. I feel warm all over my body. I pull her in again. She says stay with me, I associated "always" with rape prior but there was no rape, there was no rape. I promised to stay with her and without me she will wither. I renew this promise and feel like crying. She collapses on top of me I accidentally pulled her down and rests her head on my heart she is pressing her chin there very hard and holding my face to the point of pain. "Don't let him take you from me" she says fiercely, I say "He never will as long as I have fight in me" Eventually I begin sensing the world around me which stops being shiny and blurry. That is the worse episode I have ever had. Katniss has Boggs holo. I feel determined to ripp off the skin of the white imp, and keep his head as a trophy. There's no better death then that done in the attempt to melt the toxic snow. Feeding him to the mutts would simply lead to the death of the mutts from all the poisons that are in Snow’s veins. His blood itself could be used as a poison. I'm glad we are dead and see a clearer view of events from the capital, considering that I'm a mutation, I don't lose it over the death of Holmes besides the occasional tear. I suggest when Gale asks the next step I suggest either breaking down holes in walls in residential houses, or going into the sewers. I don't care who I kill as long as I get Snow’s head barbecued on a trident. So I don't mind being unhandcuffed. But then Octavia finds smart cuffs for me and Annie, should we lose it the elastic smart cuffs will tighten, Katniss has the key to it. When Katniss asks how I am and brushes my hair I tell that "only two things are holding me together, you and the image of Snow's unrecognizable mutilated corpse"

I go over the mutts that we will face In the capital give a layout of the mansion and whatever I know about the snowman unit defending the mansion known as the Presidential guard

To anyone in the TUC fandom who has looked at AHS and skipped it because they heard the ending is happy...

... and then assumed that it's just a wish fulfillment "ideal reality" kind of outcome of the TUC story that cuts all of the depth, pain, and realism ... Go back and read it right now.

Because that is not what AHS is. Not even close.

AHS is not "my version" of TUC where I just change whatever I dislike without regard for themes or characters in the original. Far from it. One of the main goals I had was actually to give more of the Underland. More characterization (that aligns with canon, although some characters develop in a different direction because of shifts in circumstances), more worldbuilding (that coincides with canon, adding onto it), ... just more, period.

The best way I can describe what it actually is is honestly saying that AHS is to TUC like Marvel's "What if ...?" is to the MCU. It is quite literally a "What if Henry had survived his fall at the end of "Gregor the Overlander"?" And I kid you not, 95% of the changes in the story, compared to TUC, are simply a result of exactly this change.

But the entire plot of the final book is different, right? Well, I didn't say that the consequences of that one change weren't substantial. They are. Without spoiling too much I can only say that Henry happens to be an optimist, and it also happens that an optimist was exactly what the TUC story needed to achieve a happier outcome.

Anyone who has actually read my version of the CoC plot will tell you that it is far from ideal, perfect, or pain-free. A lot more happens in the actual plot, but most of those new events are there to serve the dark, violent nature of war. There's so much talk about loss, and sacrifice, exploration of (also the dark side of) heroism, and whether "for the greater good" is worth it. There's corruption and death, injustice, and grappling with unkind fates and alienation/rejection.

Now, I will admit that I did put less emphasis on the societal pressure aspect of CoC, but mainly because that theme is a huge part of AHS 2 already, and it did not really fit this part of the story anymore. Instead, "Gregor against society" becomes "Questers against society" (quite literally, since they are — small spoiler — banding together to actually overthrow Solovet and bring about change.)

BUT ... if there is corruption, death, and the violence of war, how is it happier then? How can it have a happy ending?

Very simply because it is not only corruption but also redemption. Not only death and suffering but also growth and gain. Not only violence and breaking of relationships but also companionship, hope, and mending of relationships.

... The main change that happens to be so powerful it can give this series a happy ending without disrespecting or abandoning its original gritty violent core is ... a shift in mindset toward the positive. For Gregor, but also for everyone else. One of the main themes I added is the exploration of the double-edged nature of things: Everything has good and bad consequences. What we take away from it is what we choose to focus on.

Now you might see better what I meant by "All this series needed was an optimist" earlier. If there were someone to remind people of the bright side, to remind Gregor that his rager power does not make him evil and that he is never alone or choiceless, to embody this hopeful outlook and bring it out in everything ... I promise to you that this is all it would have taken.

And this is what I'm giving you.
