On Friday morning, lawmakers gathered on the East front steps of the US Capitol to honor the police officers who died or were injured during the Capitol riot two years ago to the day.
Just one Republican appeared to show up to the ceremony: Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania.
"I wanted to be here," Fitzpatrick told Insider after the ceremony, saying he didn't know if he was the only member of his party on the steps. All members-elect were invited.
The 10 am ceremony seemed to overlap with a scheduled 10:15 am conference call for Republicans to discuss the latest round of negotiations in Republican leader Kevin McCarthy's quest to become Speaker of the House. However, the ceremony had largely concluded by 10:18am.
Fitzpatrick pointed to the call as the reason other Republicans, including leadership, were not in attendance. "I couldn't even see who was there, but I do know there was a call regarding this whole Speakership thing," he told reporters.
Voting has been ongoing since Tuesday, and as of Friday morning, McCarthy had lost 11 consecutive ballots.
During the ceremony, members of Congress honored the four officers who lost their lives as the result of the riot: Capitol Police Officers Brian Sicknick and Howard Leibengood, and DC Metropolitan Police Officers Gunther Hashida, Kyle DeFreytag, and Jeffrey Smith, ringing a bell each time their names were called. Sicknick suffered violent attacks during the riot, while the four other officers died by suicide in the days and months afterward.
The lawmakers then observed a 140-second member of silence to commemorate 140 other officers who were seriously injured during the riot.
"Many more will forever be scarred by the bloodthirsty violence of the insurrectionist mob," said Jeffries during the ceremony. "We stand here today with our democracy intact because of those officers."
Fitzpatrick also told reporters that the day has a particular resonance for him. On January 6, 2020 — a year before the assault — he lost his brother, former Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick, to cancer.
"I lost my brother on this day the year before. The insurrection happened on the one year anniversary," he said. "There's just a lot, a lot of emotions. It's a terrible day that we can never let happen again."

Relatives of the late US Capitol Police Ofc. Brian Sicknick who was murdered by pro-Trump terrorists during Trump’s January 6th coup attempt refused to shake hands with Mitch McConnell or Kevin McCarthy at a ceremony where he was posthumously awarded a medal.
Fallen officer's family snubs McConnell and McCarthy at Jan. 6 gold medal ceremony Officers who responded to the Capitol attack pointedly refused to shake hands with the two GOP leaders as they received top honors from Congress Tuesday.
Police officers who responded to the Jan. 6 Capitol attack and some of their family members pointedly declined to shake the hands of Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy as they accepted Congressional Gold Medals on Tuesday.
Officers and the family of fallen officer Brian Sicknick shook hands with Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer as they accepted the medals, but quickly moved past the House and Senate Republican leaders — despite McConnell outstretching his hand. All senior congressional leaders were participating in the event to honor U.S. Capitol Police officers, Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police and others who responded during the riot.
[ ... ]
Police officers have criticized McCarthy’s response following the attack, including former D.C. officer Michael Fanone, who suffered a traumatic brain injury and a heart attack in the riot and secretly recorded a meeting with the House Republican leader. Some House Republicans have downplayed the seriousness of the attack, and McCarthy has personally minimized former President Donald Trump’s role in stoking the mob.
At first Kevin McCarthy criticized Trump’s inaction and attitude during the assault on the Capitol. But when he realized that offending the GOP God-Emperor was a big political no-no, he flew down to Mar-a-Lago to grovel for forgiveness.
To say that Kevin McCarthy has a spine made out of Jell-O would be an insult to the solidity of Jell-O.

Well, the 1/6 rioter who maced a police officer who later died has been sentenced. 80 months, a bit short of 7 years.
And, on the one hand, yes, that's a pretty long sentence. Can you imagine losing 7 years of your life? That is genuinely a long time.
On the other hand, the mandatory minimum for selling 280 grams of crack cocaine, a crime which is non-violent, is 10 years.
I'm not arguing that anyone needs to go to prison for longer, I think that our system is generally overly punitive as it is, but I think the fact that a person who violently assaulted a uniformed officer leading to his death while attacking the nation's legislature in an attempt to overthrow the results of a legitimate election doesn't even get 7 years in prison should make us question whether 10-20 year sentences are warranted for just about anything else.

In Poor Taste ... To Say The Least!
My jaw dropped and steam began coming out of my ears when I read about the latest board game being released this Saturday, January 6th. Does the date ring any bells? Yes, it is the third anniversary of the horrible attack on the United States Capitol – an attack designed to overthrow the 2020 election and allow a wanna-be dictator to remain in office indefinitely; an attack that killed several…

STEPHEN COLBERT The Late Show - 2022`1206
Today, heroic police officers who defended Congress on January 6, and their families, were honored with a congressional gold medal ceremony. Yes, it is well deserved. They confronted a mob hell-bent on destroying our system of government, risked their lives defending democracy in the halls of Congress, and put up with a lot of something I can't say on CBS.
Madam Speaker, thank you. Thank you.
Now, members of both parties were there for the ceremony, but family members of fallen Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick did not appreciate the Republicans in attendance. When it came time for the receiving line those family members would not shake hands with Mitch McConnell or Kevin McCarthy. Damn, that is …
When asked why they wouldn't shake the Republican leaders' hands, Sicknick's mother said this:
They're just two-faced. I'm tired of them standing there and saying how wonderful the Capitol Police is and then they turn around and go down to Mar-a-Lago and kiss his ring.
And, by ring, of course, she means - how do I put this delicately? - his butthole.

"No cops were killed"
Rest in Peace Brian Sicknick
Rot in Piss those who killed him
He didn't die on January 6, he died on January 7. He had two strokes due to a clog in an artery in his brainstem.
The medical examiner found no evidence of either internal or external injuries and say he died of natural causes. They use the word natural when disease alone is responsible for the death of a person. If someone's death is at all a result of injuries they sustained, even if it exasperates existing medical conditions, they don't consider that a natural death.
So no one killed Brain Sicknick. No cops were killed.
But by all means continue to let the media do your thinking for you.

Chuck Schumer continues to pretend like Brian Sicknick died as a result of January 6th when it's been proven that he died several days later due to an unrelated cause.
That's the problem with the deep state:
They are counting on the people's ignorance so that they can spew their lies without pushback.
An awakened and educated populace is what they fear the most.
And the people are awakening.

This is fantastic. These are Brian Sicknick’s family, and they all walk right past Yertle The Turtle and Mushy Mark Meadows! Every one of them shook hands and spoke with Nancy and Chuck, and walked right by the nazis. Glorious!
Due to twitter’s weird not letting you link the video directly, here is the thread:
