Note to Self - Word Balloons: A Study
(No spoilers, don't worry)
14 total comics to compare against, across genres with half as traditionally printed comics and half from webcomics. While not an exhaustive list, should be enough to start to give some idea about preferences.
Text Type: Either fully capitalized (EXAMPLE) or with mixed case (Example)
All Caps versus Mixed Case
Mixed Case vs. ALL CAPS for all comics
Mixed Case vs. ALL CAPS for Traditional Printed Comics AND for all webcomics (same results)
A slight preference for the traditional method of writing out word balloons with text in all caps
Spacing Between Text and Outer Balloons
Min Spacing versus Regular Spacing versus Max Spacing
Spacing between text and outer balloon for all comics
Traditional comics are basically evenly split between a normal spacing (about the width of a letter) and min spacing (which leaves essentially no room between the text and the balloon)
Traditional comics slightly tend toward a minimizing the spacing between the text and the balloon
Spacing between text and outer balloons for webcomics
Webcomics are split between between a normal spacing (about the width of a letter) and extra spacing (which can sometimes double or triple the distance between the text and the balloon). Webcomics slightly tend towards adding additional space between the text and the word balloon
Word Balloons Within or Outside the Panels
Within Panel versus Outside Panel
Whether word balloon (typically) lie entirely within or can exist outside the strict space of the panel
This is perhaps the most obvious difference between webcomics and traditional comics. All traditional comics in this set only have word balloons that lie within the panel, while all the webcomics typically have there word balloons lie outside their panels
Conclusion
As reductive as it sounds, the overall conclusion is that any combination of word balloon choices are well represented in both traditional and webcomics. The only noticeable difference is that webcomics tend to take greater advantage of the negative space between panels by moving their word ballons out of the panel borders

Notes:
Good capture of Halloween! This was filmed on the aisle so you can see some people getting up and walking around at times. LOTS of latecomers during ready set I had to get up to let people into the row, so there is no video there. The guy in front of me wouldn't stop moving so his head can come in and out of frame at times but it's always worked around.

The Horror of the Horror Shelf
(or, Stephanie Meyer Ate My Baby.)
Listen, I’m going to confess something here that is truly, truly horrible. It is a dark secret that few souls have had the privileged terror of knowing, and one thing I don’t admit in public when I’m trying to get people to like me. It’s a monstrous secret, one I probably need professional help for, and I’m compelled today to confess in a spirit of honesty and community to my fellow writer:
I like Romance novels.
I do, I'm sorry! They’re like Feelings-porn. They’re tacky little kernels of masochistic mindlessness, with usually flat prose and ridiculous plots that are so overly sweetened with sex that it’s like eating cardboard dipped in caramel. (Mmmm, porn-caramel.) I usually pick up a pile from the clearance rack at the local used bookstore when I’m interested in really debasing myself for a whole afternoon. Romance novels are great.
But not when they’re mixed up with my Horror.
Go to any major chain bookstore and you’ll probably see what I’m talking about. The two and half shelves labeled “Horror” will have your standard trappings of the genre stocked there—a handful of Stephen King, a pile of old Anne Rice, some Poe and Matheson collections with a row or two reserved for Dean Koontz. (Oh sweet, dark gawds of doom, not Dean Koontz. But I’ll rant about that, later.) Anyway, then you’ll see a small scattering of other “real” horror writers like Bentley Little, Ramsey Campbell, Brian Lumley, et al…but all that takes up a surprisingly small section of the shelf.
What remains—what squats in the remainder of the space like black leeches on the chest of a pre-Industrial revolution cancer patient—is paranormal romance. Laurel K. Hamilton. Charlene Harris. Stephanie Meyer. Stephanie freakin’ Meyer, people! Sitting right there, next to Graham Masterson!
If that thought doesn’t keep you awake at night and haunt your every fevered nightmare…well, then, maybe you should go write a SciFi novel.
But keep in mind, I have no issue with paranormal romance itself. (The Twilight series, of course, is an abomination on this earth that needs to be exorcised, but we all know that.) Paranormal romance is fine. I like paranormal romance—when on its own freakin’ shelf.
The fact that the major chain bookstores are compelled to stock these books as “Horror,” when anyone with a third grade education can see they are not remotely scary and not even meant to be scary, is a very bad sign. Either it’s a vast lack of vision on the part of book distributors, a sign of a changing market, or a hideous conspiracy to take the teeth out of that gory, scary genre we’ve come to know and love. I’m going to say its option one: lack of vision. Because, frankly, the other two options are just to horrifying to consider.
But, after you moved passed that horror, you might stand in front of the shelf, looking at poor Graham Masterson and the porn-caramel company he’s obtained in the bookstore just because his name starts with M. And you might have a name that starts with M yourself, which might lead you to think: “Oh, no. When I get my novel published, it might be sitting right there, next to her, and my beloved characters will be close enough to rub butts with Edward Cullen.”
Run screaming for the hills, people, cuz it don’t get any scarier than that.
Lorna D Keach

The Batman who smiles
There are a lot of Batmen out there.
We have seen alternate futures where Damian Wayne, Tim Drake, Dick Grayson and Terry McGinnis (genetically engineered biological son of Bruce Wayne, created in March 1999 by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini) are the Batman. Not to mention alternate timelines (or is it Earths?) with (that I know of) Thomas Wayne and Dick Grayson as Batman, and DickBats in the Sixth dimension.
Before Flashpoint, Jean-Paul Valley/Azrael was the first to step in as Batman for a longer period. Both Alfred and Superman have worn the cowl for shorter stints in Old Time Comics. So has Police Sergeant Bill Randall whom Dick recruited in the Batman Dailies, back in June-July 1944, to circumvent the order to Robin to not do anything alone while Bruce was in bed with a bullet wound. And then there was that time when Doctor Hurt trained replacement Batmen together with GCPD, and Jim Gordon pretty recently was a Batman of sorts when Bruce had amnesia. And now we’re on the verge of this upcoming DC event, Future State, with at least two different Batmen running around. None of them Dick – as far as I understand, one is the presumed dead Bruce Wayne (never heard that one before...) and the other is The Next Batman, Tim (Jace) Fox, estranged son of Lucius Fox.
Dick might not want to be Batman, and I suppose it’s nice of DC to respect his wishes. But I’ll confess I loved him as a reluctant Batman and I would have liked his run with Damian as Robin had been longer. It was meant to continue for another year, but the (in my opinion) ill-advised idea of New 52 put a premature stop to that.
Still. Dick has already filled the Bat-boots several times.
The first time Dick subbed as Batman was in “The Strange Costumes of Batman” in Detective Comics # 165 (November 1950). By Edmond Hamilton, art Dick Sprang and Charles Paris. He was still a tiny Robin at the time and used a special Batman-costume, padded and with a bird instead of a bat on the chest.
The next time I can find is in Batman # 302 (August 1978), where Dick puts on the suit for about five panels so Bruce Wayne can put in an appearance. By David Vern Reed, art John Calnan and Dick Giordano.
In Batman # 353, Dick dresses up as Batman of his own accord, hoping to make more of an impression on certain robbers, it seems. Only he happens to come upon Bruce as Matches Malone... ”The Sting... Batman style.” By Mike W. Barr, art Don Newton and Dennis Jensen, (November 1982)
And then there is “Knightfall Prodigal”. After the roaring disaster with Jean-Paul Valley in the Batsuit, Bruce asks Dick to take over. He works with Tim as Robin from Batman # 512 to Batman # 514; in total it’s 12 issues since the arc also goes in Detective Comics, Robin and Batman: Shadow of the Bat. (November 1994 to January 1995).
In Shadow of the Bat # 55 (October 1996), Bruce is taken in by the police and asks Dick to stand in for the night. By Alan Grant, art Rick Burchett and Klaus Janson.
Bruce needs to act as Matches Malone again in Batman # 588 (April 2001), so Dick puts on the Batsuit. (By Brian K. Vaughan, art Scott McDaniel and Karl Story.)
Batman # 687. By Judd Winick, art Ed Benes and Rob Hunter.
Then we have Batman RIP and Battle for the Cowl (2009), and Dick is eventually pretty much forced to take up the cowl and mantle for the duration. He finally does it in and Battle for the Cowl # 3 (July 2009) and Batman # 687 (August 2009).
And we all remember how much he initially loathed the Batsuit, don’t we... But still, he sometimes enjoyed being Batman.
Batman # 688. By Judd Winick, art Mark Bagley and Rob Hunter.
Batman # 689. By Judd Winick, art Mark Bagley and Rob Hunter.
Dick continued as Batman and later the Batman of Gotham until the end of that continuity, i. e. Flashpoint. The last issue where he is Batman is # 713 (October 2011).
In Detective Comics # 871, part of The Black Mirror, he had lived at the penthouse and been Batman for over a year. Flashpoint cuts it short a bit; in Nightwing vol 3 # 1, Dick narrates that “for almost a year, I’ve been filling in as Batman while Bruce Wayne was… away.”
Since then, Dick has helped Bruce as Batman twice that I know of.
First, to foil the Joker in Batman vol 2 # 40 (April 2015). By Scott Snyder, art Greg Capullo and Danny Miki.
And then again, when Bruce is called for jury duty. Batman vol 3 # 51 (September 2018). By Tom King, art Lee Weeks.
Bonus: Other versions of DickBats.
Dick was seen as Batman twice more in the first decades of Batman, forming a second generation of Batman and Robin. The first time was Dick having a nightmare about a future where his son was Robin, the second time was Alfred amusing himself with writing a possible future story where Bruce's son was Robin II and Dick was Batman II. The presumed mother was Kathy Kane, then Batwoman.
"Batman II and Robin, Junior." Batman # 66. By Bill Finger, art Bob Kane, Lew Sayre Schwartz, Charles Paris. (1951)
"The Second Batman and Robin Team". Batman # 131, by Bill Finger, art Sheldon Moldoff. (1960)
Dick Grayson/Robin of the Golden Age supposedly belonged on Earth-Two (though canon writers are happy to use these stories for whatever continuity when they please), where he only went out as Batman once. "Last laugh!", in Wonder Woman vol 1 # 283. By Paul Levitz, art Joe Staton and Steve Mitchell. (1981). He kept his Robin identity until his death during Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985–1986); as a civilian, he was a lawyer and ambassador.
In 1996, the Elseworlds story Batman & Captain America (written and art by John Byrne) was published. In the epilogue, Dick Grayson has taken over as Batman with Bruce’s son Bruce Wayne jr as Robin. In Superman and Batman: Generations (also by John Byrne, 1999-2004), DickBats is killed by a trap laid by the Joker. Bruce jr takes over the cowl.
Dick takes over the cowl in “The Knights of Tomorrow”, episode 2:22 of the tv show Batman: The Brave and the Bold (November 2010). His Robin is Damian, son of Bruce and Selina Kyle. This is, however, a story that Alfred Pennyworth is writing about a possible future for the Batfamily (like “The Second Batman and Robin team”.)
Convergence: Detective Comics (2015) takes place on pre-Crisis Earth-2, where Dick stayed as Robin and Helena Wayne was Huntress. When their stories have been told earlier, Dick only used Batman’s suit once, and he and Helena died in Crisis on Infinite Earths # 12. This two issue story ends with that Dick becomes Batman.
Dick is the Batman of the New Earth 2. (From the comics Earth 2: World’s End, Convergence and Earth 2: Society.) In this reality, Dick was never Robin; he met Batman (Thomas Wayne) as an adult and was trained by Huntress (Helena Wayne). His spine was shattered when The Joker shot him but with technological help, he could still walk and took up the mantle of Batman. At the end of Earth 2: Society, Dick is called Oracle and is confined to a wheelchair. Earth 2: Society # 14. (September 2016) By Dan Abner, art Federico Dallocchio and Angel Hernandez.
Dick also became Batman on something called Earth-2142, with Helena Wayne as Robin. (Sorry, no confirmed pictures at the moment.)
And on Earth 42, where the inhabitants are androids.
Shadow of the Bat Annual # 4 (1996), a medieval fantasy AU where Bruce is the king hiding in his castle while Dick fights in his place as Batman (and is killed).
Detective Comics # 966. By James Tynio IV, art Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira. (December 2018)
The DC storyarc A Lonely Place of Living is about a future Batman-Tim coming back to the present. Here he tells present Tim about his time, when Dick for a while stepped in as Batman but moved on.
Batman vol 3 # 45. Written by Tom King, art Tony S Daniel and John Livesay. (June 2018.)
In Batman vol 3 # 45-47, (written by Tom King, art Tony S Daniel, John Livesay, Danny Miki and Sandy Florea. June-July, 2018.) Booster Gold creates an alternative reality by saving Bruce’s parents. For some reason, Dick is Batman and fights a city of Jokers with lethal violence. (How he got the inspiration for the name or the resources to become Batman is beyond me, but whatever.)
Jason Todd, by the way, has invented car tires that give tire thieves a sometimes deadly shock of electricity in this reality, and Tim Drake has a menial job at Wayne engineering. Damian is, of course, never born. And Selina Kyle is a serial killer that Booster Gold releases because he thinks that her and Bruce’s love will convince Bruce the old reality need to be reinstated. In the end, there are a lot of corpses.
I've heard fans of Booster Gold aren't fond of this story. One can sympathize. There is a kind of whacky humour in seeing what well-known characters are up to in this timeline, but it certainly doesn't do any characters any favours.
Then there is Dick as Batman in the Sixth dimension. Justice League (2018) # 20 (May 2019). By Scott Snyder and Jorge Jiménez, art Jorge Jiménez.
There is no picture, but the crazy version of Donna from a future discloses that Dick, in her timeline, became Batman some ten years in the future. Titans vol 3 # 17. (January 2018) By Dan Abnett, art Minkyu Jung and Mick Gray.
In Future State – Gotham, Dick uses the enhancing drug Brane to gain an edge in the fight against the Magistrate and assorted villains. It enhanced his intelligence and gave him some precognition. He got a Batman-like suit and claimed to be the only Batman Gotham needed in Future State – Gotham # 14 (2022), writer Dennis Culver, art Giannis Milonogiannis and Geoffo.
Dick is Batman in a parallel world in Titans United: Bloodpact # 3 (2022). Writer Cavan Scott, art Lucas Meyer.

The Legend of Korra: Breaking Bending and a Beautiful World
I think it is safe to say that Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of, if not the greatest animated television series of all time. You could ask a multitude of people what their favorite part of the show was, and various answers are guaranteed to return. Maybe it was the deep mesmerizing worldbuilding that kept a viewer engaged. Or, it could be the lovable and compelling cast of characters viewers could easily relate to. And, it is safe to mention the themes the show presented about war, forgiveness, and growth that taught viewers valuable lessons that they are still applying to this day. Regardless of the reason, there is one unifying factor as to why all of those parts of the show are excellent, and that is because of the expert and meticulous writing. Praise must be due to Aaron Eshaz and his talented team for making such a tightly written and nearly flawless show.
Now, there should be no misconception. Aaron Eshaz is not the creator of the series. He is merely the head writer. The creators are two separate people, Mike DiMartino and Brian Konietzko. They certainly have a hand in the creation of their masterpiece, but it is important to acknowledge that the duo did not refine Avatar by themselves. No, without Eshaz and most of his team, another creation was made. Another series that is not regarded with nearly as much universal acclaim as their last. Together, the creators of Avatar made The Legend of Korra, airing on Nickelodeon in 2012.
This particular show is not met with the same universal love that its predecessor receives. In fact, the community is quite divided on the synopsis on its quality. Some believe it to be just as good, or even better than the original. Others argue that it’s less than a fraction of the greatness of ATLA and refuse to call it a sequel. Unfortunately, my opinion on the series leans more towards the latter, and it is not due to blinding nostalgia. In fact, there are certain critical and fundamental changes and writing decisions that make the show flawed beyond repair, and as a result, pales in comparison to its predecessor. The Legend of Korra is a prime example of a story crumbling apart due to a failure of its creators sacrificing important worldbuilding for convenience.
It is easy to start somewhere for an example, because one can be found at the very start of The Legend of Korra. In this scene, Korra, the main character, is seen bending three different elements as a child, proving that she is the next Avatar. On its own, the scene is cute and entertaining. However, when knowing the context and information that Avatar: The Last Airbender established, this scene breaks fundamental rules that were set for its universe. According to A:TLA, an Avatar is not supposed to know they’re the Avatar until they’re a teenager. Then, they learn the elements in an important cycle. All of this is ignored in Korra’s introduction, and it is baffling as to why this writing decision was made.
In the show and creators’ defense, this could have been a creative choice to make Korra different and unique from the past Avatars. However, when doing this, Mike and Brian should have kept their world’s rules in mind. Kirk Hamilton, a journalist for Kotaku describes it as “The show chose to portray bending more as a magical power than a spiritual martial art.” This statement perfectly sums up the drastic difference in bending. Bending in A:TLA was not magic, it was a practiced art that was learned from the world’s nature. It is important to not forgo what was already there to maintain consistency. The show hasn’t even started, but The Legend of Korra is already showing little promise in it’s writing. And as the season continues, this specific issue remains to be a problem.
Later into the first season, the antagonist, Amon, is introduced. He is a “freedom fighter” who believes that non-benders deserve the same rights as benders. A main drive for him to equalize others is to take a bender’s ability to bend. He does this to strike fear into Korra and her friend group of benders. However, his immersion of a threat is shattered during the season finale. It is revealed that Amon is actually a waterbender who used blood bending (a rare and powerful subset of waterbending) to erase bending.
Outside of the Avatar universe, this would have been an exciting twist. Unfortunately, that is not the case for TLOK, and for that this twist suffers. Hamilton calls Amon’s bending a “retcon” meaning that blood bending was not used as intended, and rewritten to fit the current narrative. In A:TLA, blood bending is only used during a full moon, and does not take one’s bending away. Hamilton’s remarks reflect that this change was both a failure in writing and a failure in consistency of the world that was built before.
These examples are just from the first season, but they prove that DiMartino and Konietzko failed to understand the world they set their show in. On several occasions, the power system of bending was manipulated for an attempt to make a more exciting narrative. Because of these changes, the connection between A:TLA and TLOK hardly exists. There is no consistency, so it’s hard to enjoy new stories from the same universe when that can’t actually be true. My, and many others', loss of immersion in the show prove how important it is for a series to remain consistent within its world, even across different series. Changing anything important to the world’s structure is bound to weaken a series sequel, just as The Legend of Korra will always be second to its predecessor.

BEST MOVIES OF 2020 (Arranged alphabetically)
1. David Byrne’s American Utopia Director: Spike Lee Cast: David Byrne, Chris Giarmo, Tendayi Kuumba, Karl Mansfield, Angie Swan, Bobby Wooten III, Mauro Refosco, Tim Keiper, Gustavo Di Dalva, Jacquelene Acevedo, Daniel Freedman, Stephane San Juan Critic’s Notes: Stop Making Sense is my favorite concert of all time. So, American Utopia easily slots in as one of my favorite. And boy, this is the most urgent film of 2020. It is that watchable as David Byrne possesses his inner Mr. Rogers to guide Americans to an ideal society.
2. Driveways Director: Andrew Ahn Cast: Hong Chau, Lucas Jaye, Jerry Adler, Robyn Payne, Christine Ebersole, Brian Dennehy Critic’s Notes: Just the sweetest swan song from Brian Dennehy before his passing. Generally, this film is a slice-of-life story of the unlikely friendship between a lonely boy and a lonely senior, and the poignancy is too precious that it struck a chord.
3. Fan Girl Director: Antoinette Jadaone Cast: Charlie Dizon, Paulo Avelino Critic’s Notes: For my native pick from Philippine cinema, here is an unlikely story between a fan and her idol. It is a predictable deconstruction of an acclaimed, who becomes an over-the-top antithesis to his onscreen persona. But the script is sharp, so as the delightful leads.
4. First Cow Director: Kelly Reichardt Cast: John Magaro, Orion Lee, Toby Jones, Ewen Bremner, Scott Shepherd, Gary Farmer, Lily Gladstone, Alia Shawkat Critic’s Notes: Kelly Reichardt became the Yasujirō Ozu of 2020, for this film contains the year’s most meditative shots and moodiest atmosphere on an otherwise simple story of friendship.
5. I’m Thinking of Ending Things Director: Charlie Kaufman Cast: Jesse Plemons, Jessie Buckley, Toni Collette, David Thewlis, Guy Boyd, Hadley Robinson, Gus Birney, Abby Quinn, Colby Minifie Critic’s Notes: Charlie Kaufman is one of the pioneers of meta storytelling. And him helming one of the most unnerving suspense novels is a strange one. But it brings to light the subgenre of existential horror. First viewing may not be scary, but lingering on its subtext is the scariest part.
6. Minari Director: Lee Isaac Chung Cast: Steven Yeun, Han Ye-ri, Alan Kim, Noel Kate Cho, Youn Yuh-jung, Scott Haze, Will Patton Critic’s Notes: My pick for the best film of 2020, Minari is another slice-of-story about a Korean immigrant family wanting to achieve the American dream in Arkansas. What it lacks on dramatic stakes, it has the heart of a striving family. And the best subplot comes from grandma Soon-ja.
7. Palm Springs Director: Max Brabakow Cast: Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti, Meredith Hagner, Camila Mendes, Tyler Hoechlin, Peter Gallagher, Chris Pang, June Squibb, J. K. Simmons Critic’s Notes: The emblematic comedy of the last year, Palm Springs takes in the time-loop trope and gives it a fresh twist. The true heart of it is the chemistry between Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, whose signature personas seemingly blend.
8. Soul Director: Pete Docter Cast: Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Graham Norton, Rachel House, Alice Braga, Richard Ayoade, Phylicia Rashad, Donnell Rawlings, Questlove, Angela Bassett Critic’s Notes: Aside from Brad Bird, Pete Docter just become one of the Pixar directors whose films are worth waiting. Soul is an intriguing character study of two souls needing to find the purpose of their lives. With its layers and layers of themes, this is the boldest Pixar project since The Incredibles.
9. Sound of Metal Director: Darius Marder Cast: Riz Ahmed, Olivia Cooke, Paul Raci, Lauren Ridloff, Mathieu Amalric, Chelsea Lee Critic’s Notes: Riz Ahmed is the reason to see this film that honors the deaf and disabled community. His character’s deconstruction and subtle expressions give such gravitas that it is heart-wrenching to watch. Also, the best sound design of the year. (Sorry, Tenet.)
10. Wolfwalkers Director: Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart Cast: Honor Kneafsey, Eva Whittaker, Sean Bean, Simon McBurney, Tommy Tiernan, Jon Kenny, John Morton, Maria Doyle Kennedy Critic’s Notes: Cartoon Saloon just landed itself as one of the prime animation studios, next to Pixar, Studio Ghibli and Laika, with their most ambitious film yet. Wolfwalkers is perhaps their Princess Mononoke with a fresh twist on Irish history.
Runners-Up: Hamilton, The King of Staten Island, Run, The Trail of the Chicago 7, The Vast of Night
Missed Masterpieces: Nomadland, One Night in Miami, Promising Young Woman, Rocks, The Father

After a year away, I can now present the 2019 AO3 Ship Stats Top 100!
This list shows the 100 pairing tags with the most fanfics posted on Archive Of Our Own as of July 24 2019. There are 69 M/M pairings, 19 F/M, 3 F/F, 5 Gen and 4 Other. (Please note that on AO3, ‘Name & Name’ indicates platonic or familial ‘Gen’ relationships, while ‘Name/Name’ is used for romantic and sexual pairings.)
Of the 200 names on the list, 25 belong to women and 4 to characters of indeterminate gender, compared to 28 and 3 respectively in the 2017 list. There are 46 POC and 8 racially ambiguous characters, compared with 41 and 10 last year.
For more information on this project, please see the FAQ post. You might also want to check out the Top 100 pairings of 2017-2019 or the Top 100 Femslash Pairings. This stats series is also available on AO3.
A text-only version of the list is given below the cut.

Very nice capture of Marc as Burr and Jimmie as Washington. Some head obstruction at the very bottom of the screen in wideshots, but it never takes away. This cast is absolutely Incredible together, Miguel continues to shine as the best hamilton we've ever had, While Marc plays off him and the rest of the cast insanely well. The chemistry is off the charts in this video.
