Ancestry
One of the goals I've set for myself for this new phase of my life was to do some research on the history of my family and to build a family tree which shows my ancestry.
When I started working on this I was in for the double suprise.
Firstly, how quickly it can be done these days with all the Internet resources available, eg apps like geni.com and Geneanet. Before I started I thought it was going to be a tediously long and frustrating process - visiting archives, searching through baptismal registers, corresponding with distant relations, going down rabbitholes and reaching deadends.
Great was my surprise when I realised that I could draw my patrilineal line from the first Bartlett to settle in South Africa (the missionary of the London Missionary Society, John Bartlett, born in 1788 and died in 1849) to my own immediate in about 3 hours time.
The "Bartlett Church" at Campbell in the Northern Cape:
The station at Campbell drawn by Charles Bell in 1835, with the church at the left:
In the process I discovered mothers and grandmothers with surnames like Haarhof, Maartens, De Beer and Ludik (wich happens to be my middle name) and also a generous sprinkling of Huguenot surnames like Viljoen, Joubert, Le Febré, De Grave, Cronjé and Taillefer.
My second surprise was when I came across an article about the origin of the Bartlett surname. The article starts by stating very generally:
"BARTLETT is an ancient Norman name that arrived in England after the Norman Conquest of 1066. The name BARTLETT comes from the personal name Bartholomew."
I was further intrigued when I read the following:
"The first of the family was Adam Barttelot, an esquire in the retinue of Brian, a Knight, and they came into England with William, the Conqueror, and fought at Hastings."
Scene from the Battle of Hastings, 1066, Bayeux Tapestry:
But what truly blew my mind was the next bit of information:
"The Bartlett family owes it's beginning to King Pepin and Queen Bertha of France. The parents of King Charles I (aka Charlemagne) and his sister Bertha. Now Bertha married Milo, Duke of Aigiant and they are the parents of the Bartlett line. Their son, christened by the name of Berthaelot, a diminutive of Bertha became the favorite of his uncle (Charlemagne) who watched over him."
King Pepin The Short, first king of the Franks and father of Charlemagne and Bertha, and grandfather of the first of the Bartlett line:
Charlemagne/Carolus Magnus, Holy Roman Emperor:
Oh, my goodness! This is mind-boggling and will take me some time for me to come to terms with.
But, ok. Calm down. Carry on as always.
You can walk with kings. But just remember to keep the common touch, my boy (with a clear nod at Rudyard Kipling).

JEUDI 28 MARS 2024 (Billet 3/3)
Cela a été beaucoup d'émotions, a réagi Adam Siao Him Fa.

@twirlingtatos Hi! I’m still new to the backstage of skating and would love to educate myself about some of these things so I know what to look for. Where would you recommend I start? What keywords should I be searching? (In addition to what you’ve provided here!)
Hi, I will reply in the reblog bc otherwise word limit kills it.
❗Trigger warnings apply! Sexual assault, abuse
More under the cut: A list of recent cases that I could name on the top of my head. So this is not a complete list.
Believe survivors!
I am really not sure where to start....abuse goes on for so long in this sport and each year more cases come to light of sexual assault, physical and mental abuse, grooming, relationships with minors...
I think in recent years Christine Brennan provided lots of articles on cases of abuse, the latest one on Nikolaj Sørensen can be found here:
I think one case that had a big impact also in the fandom was the allegations against John Coughlin, many skaters came to his defense before Ashley Wagner spoke out about being one of his victims.
Other prominent case that came to light in recent years is the case of Morgan Cipres that also involved the coaches here:
Other latest cases involve Brian Joubert having a realtionship with a minor and being an abusive coach, there was more reported in French news.
Other prominent case is the former president of the French federation Didier Gailhaguet with many French skaters coming forward with allegations.
Not even mentioned here is the case of emotional abuse that is a method in a lot of coaching places. Mie Hamada was accused by Nobunari Oda, but he lost the case against her. Eteri Tutberidze has been criticized for years because of her training methods which she is open about but show a side of emotional abuse. Nikolai Morozov is also a name in relation to abuse as there are many reports on his sexual affairs with his students and his inapproriate behavior towards female skaters. He was never officially investigated but it's common knowledge around skating.
There are sadly many more cases and these are just the ones I can name from the top of my head. Usually if you search for the term #SkatingSurvivors on Twitter you will find ppl talking about different forms of abuse that took place.
And this is only what is public knowledge as this statement by an anonymous Twitter user shows, who didn't report her case to authorities but was still a victim.
I hope this gives you just a little insight into what is happening behind the scenes.
I don't want to believe that there are only bad ppl but the culture of figure skating is not providing a safe environment. SafeSport was implemented to provide more safety but so far their impact is little. The best they can do is try to ban the investigated skaters from coaching but I have yet to see a case that really got to be solved in court.
It's all very depressing sorry...
Please take care if you try to get more information on the matter, don't read into it if you don't feel well. Trigger warnings apply.
TW: Sexual abuse
It's making me sad that so many skaters and coaches turn out to be awful human beings.
And what's making me even sadder and angry is that nothing will come of accusations with lasting impact.
The sad truth is that even if victims come forward in the grand scheme of things in the figure skating world abuse gets a "pass" in the long run and nothing happens. Even to the extent that parents willfully let their chilren skate with abusers in favor of "pushing a career".
Show me someone that was publicily accused and was really canceled to never set foot into the skating world again in any form?
They remain skaters or coaches or whatever...
Sick and tired of the slogan that "cancel culture" kills careers when it never does.
Believe the victims!
_____
An old story that is hunting me for years now and cannot be more disgusting but just shows you how the skating world doesn't care:
Maybe you don't remember Karel Fajfr's case from the 90s but I do. (Or let's say it was brought to my attention again in 2019, first in 2014) He was sentenced to prison for sexual abuse of minors and got a 3 year coaching ban and yet after this he was coaching again bc parents believed he would be a good coach. And in 2019 there were new accusations of abuse but guess what the skater got the dead end and was charged for slander instead. So if a coach can still coach until this day even if he was proven guilty of sexual abuse and parents still let their kids train with him I fear that there is no change possible in figure skating. You can get away with anything it seems...cancel culture wtf...I bet even most of you have never heard the case at all. Maybe it's bc this is a German coach but he coached well known athletes who are now coaches Michal Brezina and Ondrej Hotarek. And he even got a virtual appearance as a coach character with his bright orange glasses on Yuri on Ice.
#replies#skating survivors#figure skating#this abusive environment needs to stop#and i have been told some things that aren't even public knowledge about some other cases so nikolaj Sørensen case won't be the last#to come to light

Update: mom thought of a third Syril-lookalike figure skater, France's Brian Joubert, and sent me this infographic to explain
My mom's main impression of Syril Karn is he has a "tiny little elf face" that reminds her of 90s figure skaters Paul Wylie and Todd Eldredge
I think Syril would make a great figure skater. Didn't Tony Gilroy write a movie about ice skating as well? Make it happen season 2!

After reading about Nathan Chen (side eyeing him a lot), who I didn't even know was current world champion, because I lost some interest in figure skating years ago, went back to see where my favorites are nowadays and who's in right now 🤣
Damn it was hours of videos of Plushenko, Brian Joubert, Johnny Weir, Stephane Lambiel, among others, and a more recent Yuzuru. Half of these problematic from what google says 😞 so I'll stick to videos and begin countdown to winter Olympics
Plushenko will always have my heart... Sorry.
Thought of the day: sometimes its better not to know much about the person you admire in a certain field. You are bound to disappointment. Also don't look up your childhood / teen idols. They might suck...
