Getting There
flickr
Getting There by Jojo Via Flickr: A misleading title as you probably think I mean something else, but when I say getting there it's about how difficult it is now to get to Wolverhampton from Stafford by bus. It took just over an hour and even though the Arriva 76 service and Nat Express West Midlands 54 ran fairly close together there were two hourly and right into late in the evening. Now there is no direct service at all and one has to use Select whose service meanders seemingly aimlessly down the country lanes and has to go right into the hedge to let passing cars go by and takes almost two hours if you are lucky, and sadly there is no return bus at all after lunchtime. Also on a Saturday there isn't a service from Wolverhampton to the large villages of Coven or Brewood any more and it makes me wonder what the world is coming too! The other alternative is to go via Cannock changing buses but that takes even longer. Fortunately I have a car and what's more it only takes about fifteen-minutes on the train but you know me I like to use buses. So the once weekly trip to spend time with my friend Nat in her antiques shop is a distant memory and now I just go over there a couple of times a year. At least the sun shone for us on this occasion and I think I looked rather stylish in my bright flowery Debenhams dress another long time hold.

Bobbi Row and the Englishmen - Why'd You Put Me On (1965)
Strange name aside, this is some very sweet soul. Bobbi Row and the Englishmen were actually Don Julian and the Larks, Los Angeles soul group.

#365daysofbiking Certainly not mad, well, maybe not:
Monday March 29th 2021 – When I said here the other day that I’d been riding home all the way from Telford I had a message telling me I must be mad. I strongly disagree. I’m getting more bike/open air time, my mental health is improving daily as is my physical heath. This lockdown porkbarrel will not be in a hurry to depart at my decrepit age, I can tell you. It needs this kind of help.
It isn’t that far. I wouldn’t do it in bad weather, or if very tired. There’s always the rail alternative. and there’s the sights one sees: Like today. Riding near Brewood, the plethora of pheasants were tricky from a safety point of view (they have no road sense) but they are such handsome birds and their antics can be hilarious.
But I had most time for the tiny black puss I met on the edge of a stable yard at Coven: In beautiful condition with the kind of piercing green eyes that make you feel guilty for the sins of your elders. Puss sat her ground (sure she was female) and stared me out resolutely. She was gorgeous.
I got home feeling happier, more relaxed and better physically than I’ve felt for weeks. And only 20 minutes later than had I gone by train, and 30 minutes later than driving. That’s all win while the weather is so nice.

Today we remember the passing of Jon Lord who Died: July 16, 2012 at The London Clinic in London, England
John Douglas Lord was an English composer, pianist, and Hammond organ player known for his pioneering work in fusing rock with classical or baroque forms, especially with Deep Purple, as well as Whitesnake, Paice Ashton Lord, The Artwoods, and The Flower Pot Men.
In 1968, Lord co-founded Deep Purple, a hard rock band of which he was regarded as the leader until 1970. Together with the other members, he collaborated on most of his band's most popular songs. He and drummer Ian Paice were the only continuous presence in the band during the period from 1968 to 1976, and also from when it was reestablished in 1984 until Lord's retirement from Deep Purple in 2002. On November 11, 2010, he was inducted as an Honorary Fellow of Stevenson College in Edinburgh, Scotland. On 15 July 2011, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree at De Montfort Hall by the University of Leicester. Lord was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 8 April 2016 as a member of Deep Purple.
Lord's first marriage, from 1969 to 1981, was to Judith Feldman, with whom he had one daughter, Sara. Lord's second wife, Vickie Gibbs was a former girlfriend of Purple bandmate Glenn Hughes and twin sister of Ian Paice's wife, Jacky Paice (founder of the charity Sunflower Jam). The sisters' father was Frank Gibbs, owner of the Oakley House Country Club in Brewood, South Staffordshire. Jon and Vickie also had one daughter, Amy.
In July 2011, Lord was found to be suffering from pancreatic cancer. After treatment in both England and in Israel, he died on 16 July 2012 at the London Clinic after suffering from a pulmonary embolism. His interment was at the new churchyard of Saint Mary the Virgin Church in Hambleden.
