Self-Care on a Budget

For a lot of people, this has been a stressful year. Whether that is due to personal events, the political climate we have all found ourselves in, or the economic problems we face. Regardless of what is causing harm, you should have access to accessible care. You can do self-care anywhere, but with the Summer in full swing, we can also provide care for ourselves by treating ourselves to outings and new experiences without breaking the bank. This blog aims to offer some ideas of things to do for free in Nashville.

One way we can take care of ourselves is by getting outside and moving our bodies. While it can be hard to be outside in the summer heat, being in nature is important to our well-being. The sun offers Vitamin D that naturally energizes us, and being in nature grounds us and helps us be present. Here are two great places to be in nature this Summer.

Centennial Park

Centennial Park is off of West End and close to the center of Nashville. It is a perfect place to go for a picnic, walk around and see the sculptures, sit with a good book or a friend and soak up the sun, or find shade under the Parthenon replica that the park is known for. If it gets too hot, you can go into the Parthenon and explore, but there may be a fee.

Radnor Lake State Park

Radnor Lake is one of my favorite spots in Nashville. Technically, it is located close to Brentwood, but it is a beautiful spot to hike, walk, and be in nature. There are several hiking trails that vary in difficulty and a loop around the lake, which is my favorite. Be wary; parking can be tight, so go early or on off days if you prefer to avoid crowds. Suppose this has yet to convince you. An eagle laid a nest last year, so if you go, there are excellent bird-watching and turtle sightings!

Now, I am not crazy and only offering outdoor activities. While there are so many benefits to spending time outside, it is still hot as fire here, so I wanted to make sure I offer free indoor activities as well!

Tennessee State Museum

Our first indoor activity is the Tennessee State Museum, located downtown near the farmers market. There is free parking, but it may be limited, so get there early or ask a loved one if they can drop you off. Not only is the museum free, but it is also a great place to move your body without boiling under the sun while learning something new. While this might not feel like self-care, taking time to be with yourself or allowing yourself to learn will always feel good at the end of the day.

Nashville Public Library

If you have read any of my other blogs, you should not be surprised that I have found a way to include books in this blog post. Any public library in Nashville will be free and provide free resources and opportunities to socialize. It will also be a great place when we need to get out of the house or out of the heat. But what is unique about the Nashville Public Library’s downtown branch is its beauty. They have so many fun things to look at and do, especially for kids; it’s a great place to spend the day. They have many resources and free events posted if you desire more community. The library is free and entirely free to obtain a library card.

The East Room Nashville

This last place is exciting because it is the first nightlife event I have found for free. The East Room does not always have free entrance, but their open mic comedy nights are free! You can get the tickets on their website, but they are free. This is the most exciting part of the blog because it is rare to find free events in the evenings. Humor can be used as an intervention in therapy; you can care for yourself with laughter anytime. This is a great way to care for yourself, bring a friend, and enjoy a night out!

Marin County Mart, 2257 Larkspur Landing Cir, Larkspur, CA 94939

This shopping complex, which used to be known as Larkspur Landing, has gone completely upscale. Honestly, it looks a lot like an outdoor shopping mall in Malibu and Brentwood, Los Angeles, and I suspect that the same developers were responsible for the three. It doesn’t feel really like a Northern California mall to me, but it is very attractive and pleasant. Also, some of the businesses are only found in the Bay Area and some are national.

It's not a huge mall but it has nice shops including Diptyque, Fred Segal, Design Within Reach, Topdrawer, Veronica Beard, etc. There are clothing stores, stationery stores, a toy store, home décor stores, fragrance stores, a bookstore, spas, fitness studios, a bank, post office, and lots of restaurants. Restaurants are more casual than formal and include a wide range of cuisines. Some of them are Souvla, Shake Shack, Rustic Bakery, Pressed Juicery, Johnny Doughnuts, Miette, Hog Island Oyster, and El Huarache Loco. I saw lotions from Italy, candles from France, and lots of lovely things to covet.

There are grassy areas, lots of restaurants with outdoor patios, and it’s walking distance to the ferry. The farmer’s market is every Saturday morning. Parking was easy to find.

The Hunt Residence

Originally annexed into the city of Los Angeles in 1916, Brentwood Heights CA has evolved into one of the most affluent and sought after neighborhoods west of downtown. It is home to numerous A-list celebrities, investors and entrepreneurs who have made the area their home.

The neighborhood is known for its upscale shopping, high-end office buildings and lush outdoor entertainment options. With its laid-back atmosphere, it is a popular place for those who want to live in a more peaceful setting than what is usually found in the more hectic areas of the city.

Residential Districts

The majority of the land in Brentwood is zoned for residential use and most zoning districts require that homes in this area be on lots at least one acre in size. This density is designed to protect the natural beauty of the landscape while at the same time keeping it affordable for residents.

Hunt Residence

The Hunt Residence in the heart of the Brentwood neighborhood is a unique, architectural masterpiece. Built for Nellie Payton Hunt in 1940, this ranch-style home was designed by famed architect Paul R. Williams and is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.

It is a beautiful example of the "Regency Revival" style of architecture that was popular at the time. The house is set back from the street and surrounded by mature trees, creating a lovely setting for the home.

This expansive ranch-style house is a true Los Angeles landmark, and it has been protected by the City of Los Angeles from demolition in the past. The building was almost razed last November, but it was saved thanks to the efforts of Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger and other preservation-minded neighbors.

Besides the famous Hunt Residence, there are several other iconic and enduring homes that can be seen throughout the Brentwood area. Some of the most notable include the George Sturges House, a 1,200-square-foot mansion with a modernist twist that was built by Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Paul R. Williams-designed Hunt Residence, which was declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural monument in April 2014.

Other prominent buildings that are worth visiting for their architectural history are the Brentwood Country Mart, a popular neighborhood store that sells everything from high-end designer clothing to ice cream. The Brentwood Farmer's Market, a local favorite for its friendly atmosphere and countless food choices, is also worth a visit.

Picnic in the Getty Center Central Garden

The 134,000-square-foot Getty Center's Central Garden is a popular spot to enjoy lunch or a picnic. This picturesque spot is tucked away on the hillside above much of the Getty Center campus, and it offers an incredible view of the surrounding city.

Take a walk around the gardens or the museum and marvel at the breathtaking view. You'll be able to see many of the city's top attractions from there, including the Hollywood sign and the Griffith Observatory.

Aside from these iconic spots, the neighborhood is filled with interesting historical sites to explore. For instance, the infamous "Brentwood Fire" occurred in 1961, which destroyed 500 homes and prompted the neighborhood to be designated as a very high fire hazard severity zone.

Please feel free to correct me if anything is wrong. Jose is used as Sad Eyes' actual name as far as I know it has not been revealed in the show. A party at the Diaz residence wasn't an uncommon occurrence. 

The front and back yard filled with people, music pumping through the speakers, food and drinks neatly organised on tables (thanks to Ruby). The atmosphere of the hangout was something (Y/N) was becoming familiar with.

Being Oscar, or Spooky as he was known on the streets, Diaz's lady was a title that many were shocked she had gained.

He was the leader of the Santos, Freeridge's prominent gang (now that the Prophet$ were gone) and she worked as a librarian in Brentwood.

Two completely different individuals; on separate paths in life. 

Until a chance meeting at a soup kitchen changed everything. 

Now they were a couple; an odd couple to some, but a couple nonetheless. 

"Hey, (Y/N)!" 

The girl turned around and found José, or Sad Eyes, waving her over. He sat with a few members, each with a beer in their hand. Her boyfriend wasn't among them, but she figured he was off doing something important.

She greeted all of them with a smile, "what's up?"

Out of all of the members, Sad Eyes was who she was most comfortable with. Not to say she wasn't comfortable with the rest - it was just her and Sad Eyes had spent more time together. Whenever Oscar wasn't available, he was the one sent to help her out. At first they didn't talk to each other, he was just there, really. 

He only spoke up when he discovered she was spending way too much at the grocery store for fruits and vegetables, so he recommended the farmers market his mum always went to on Saturday mornings. 

That was the beginning of their friendship.

"Just checkin' on ya," he responded. "Any cookies?"

(Y/N) baked a batch of chocolate chip cookies when she first met the gang. It was a hit and now requested whenever she was around.

She laughed, "there should be some on the tables." 

Oso shook his head, "nah, we finished those ones." 

"I baked five trays!?" 

"We were hungry," laughed Joker, "are there more?" 

"No." Was her response, before walking off as they continued to laugh. 

She searched the crowd for Oscar but he wasn't anywhere in her line of sight. Instead she was met with the Core 4 and Jasmine sneaking off with some coronas. She let them be, but made a mental note to check up on them soon.

No doubt in her mind that either Ruby or Jamal would need help staying upright if they had more than one. Cesar, Monsé and Jasmine were somewhat responsible, she concluded. 

As she moved through the sea of people, she nodded at the women huddled near the DJ booth. They were the ones who gave her a heads up about being with a Santos, especially with the leader, as they were with some of the older members. She admired them and couldn't have been more thankful for a support system. There were no issues between her and them. 

Her issue was with the women who regarded her status as Spooky's lady as something that could be challenged. (Y/N) had yet to put a bitch in her place, but it seemed like tonight was going to be the night. 

She glanced over at the snack tables and found Oscar sipping a beer. Josie, a known opportunist, talking to him… though it was more like she was talking to herself because his focus was anywhere else but her. (Y/N) smiled when he noticed her, quickly making her way over to him. It seemed like the girl got the wrong idea, because she moved forward and put her hands on his chest.

Alright, let's do this. 

"Excuse me," she pushed herself in between the two and immediately locked lips with Oscar. 

He was caught off guard, but quickly accepted the kiss; pulling her closer which allowed her to deepen it. Their public display was met with hollering from Santos and party-goers alike. Jasmine's voice the loudest with her 'yaaaaas, girl!'. They shared a laugh when they finally separated.

Oscar brushed his thumb against her cheek. "Damn, mamas." 

(Y/N) pecked his lips as a response, before turning around to face the girl. She gave her a once over, leaning back slightly to which Oscar hung an arm across her chest. The other resting on her hip, with his chin on her shoulder. A position that practically screamed they were together if the kiss wasn't enough.

The hangaround scoffed and rolled her neck, "wow, we were just talkin' and you wanna do all that?"

At this point, the party had come to a standstill. Everyone eager to watch the exchange; especially those who wanted to see what Miss Librarian was capable of. 

"He's my man, I can do whatever I damn well please and he sure wasn't complaining," the young lady replied, "and from what I saw, you were the only one talking. Let's make one thing clear I'm the only person that gets to be all up on him. So, back off, bitch." 

"Or what?

She stepped away from Spooky, her eyes focused solely on the girl. "Please, try me and find out." 

Big. Mistake. 

Once Josie swung, (Y/N) dodged it and sent a jab to face. Josie stumbled but charged forward, once again (Y/N) dodged. Only this time she grabbed the hangarounds arm, twisted it behind her back and forced her to the ground.

"Let. Go. Of. Me!" Josie wailed, trying to break free. 

She laughed and put more pressure, "what happened to being a bad bitch?" 

"Okay, okay, I get it. I won't touch him, I get it! Now, let go! Please!" 

(Y/N) held on for a couple more seconds and then released the hold. She got up on her feet as Josie rose to hers, while holding her arm with a glare set on her face. 

"I'm Lady Spooky." (Y/N) reminded her, eyes scanning the party-goers. "If you try me, I will not hesitate. So, don't touch my man and there won't be any problems. Okay? Cool."

And, with that the party went back to normal; only this time with added cheers and shouts of 'we see you Lady Spooky'. (Y/N) walked back over to Oscar who was still in the same place she left him. She laughed when he pulled her into his chest.

He kissed her forehead, "you must be crazy about me, huh?" 

"You claimed me." Her eyes sparkled with mischief, "only right I do the same."

Happy Earth Day! Today is exactly ONE YEAR since I started my zerowaste journey and YES! I still have the same trash jar (minus one week when I went on a personal beach clean up and dropped/shattered my jar on my first week 😱). Didn’t let that mishap deter me though! I started a new jar and kept it going even stronger! I did an all zerowaste move (most of the trash in my jar is packing tape from that), started speaking out about my journey, gave talks to more than 600 people, and even made it in the NYT, NBC, and a few radio shows/podcasts to help spread the word about our major trash problem 🗑 🛑✋. This lifestyle isn’t possible for everyone. It’s easy for me to carry a reusable water bottle and fill up with tap water because I’m lucky enough to have clean water. People in Flint, Michigan, Newark, NJ, Central California, and many more don’t have that option. I can walk, bike and take public transportation because I live in a city that has clean air and infrastructure to support that. People in coal country don’t have that option. I have food coops, farmers markets, and fresh produce at nearly every subway stop. My family and friends in my hometown in Brentwood, Long Island do not. Because I have these privileges, I believe it’s only the right thing that I live the way I do. We don’t get live in a zerowaste world (but we’re getting there!), but for those of us who can do our small part, let’s do it. And at the same time, let us advocate for clean air, clean water, clean soil, for everyone. The biggest offenders are animal agriculture, fossil fuels, and the fashion industry. You can start making an impact TODAY. Make it a vegan Earth Day, wear second hand or clothing that is sustainable sourced, and support the Green New Deal so we can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. Support a carbon tax and write to your brands, companies, and representatives to voice your concerns about climate change and a healthy planet.
