An October Film Review: Ed Wood (dir by Tim Burton)
An October Film Review: Ed Wood (dir by Tim Burton)
Tumblr media
From start to end, the 1994 film Ed Wood is a nearly perfect film. Consider the opening sequence.  In glorious black-and-white, we are presented with a house sitting in the middle of a storm.  As Howard Shore’s melodramatic and spooky score plays in the background, the camera zooms towards the house.  A window flies open to reveal a coffin sitting in the middle of a dark room.  A man dressed in a…

I The Mighty at the Gramercy Theatre 4/11/19
I know it’s been quite a long time since I’ve posted or updated really anything on here. Apologies, money gets tight and time gets short.
I did however see I The Mighty last night as they supported Polyphia on tour along with Tides of Man at the Gramercy Theatre and I was not disappointed.
Gramercy Theatre isn’t the biggest venue in NYC by any means. Their capacity is just around 500
Tides of Man opened first. The Prog Rock band from Florida did a decent job of holding the audiences’ attention throughout their short set. The entire set was solely instrumental (which was a perfect fit for a tour supporting Polyphia). Mainly due to their lead vocalist leaving back in 2010. These guys let the music speak for itself. That being said there wasn’t much of a stage performance from the band. But if you’re looking for a good band just to vibe to when you don’t want to be distracted from lyrics and really connect to the music. Overall, recommend.
I The Mighty was up next. Although they were the supporting band on tour, a majority of the crowd was fully amped for when they came on stage.  While in the crowd there were many people who had no idea who I The Mighty were; yet all were thoroughly enjoying the performance and bobbing along.
The band played a good number of songs from their latest album Where the Mind Wants to Go/Where You Let it Go, the biggest crowd pleaser was “Chaos in Motion”. Bassist Chris Hinkley did an excellent job engaging with the audience throughout and getting them on their feet and moving around to the music. Brent Walsh’s vocals sound exactly as it does on the record. The amount of passion and fun these guys had on stage truly showed through and radiated throughout the venue.
Their stage performance was highly entertaining. From Chris jumping onto the drum riser mid song, Brent running around the stage, Ian completely owning his skill set on the guitar, and Blake just killing it on the drums; there was never a dull moment on stage.
The most heartfelt moment of the night was right before they played their newest single “Cave In”. Brent tells the crowd how this song in particular took around 15 years to write, because of the personal aspects that he’s dealt with and all that going into the song. He tells of how most people have dealt with addiction in some form, drug, alcohol, etc. and how his connection was through his father and alcohol. He makes a point not to preach and say for each and every person to live their own lives, but to apologize to the people you’ve hurt along your way once you realize it. A very sentimental and intimate moment shared in a most intimate way.
I’m not gonna lie, I’m still a student and needed to go to bed so I didn’t stay for the entirety of Polyphia’s set. I did stay for the first few songs they played though. I did appreciate their running joke of asking the audience to sing along if they know the words being a primarily instrumental band. I’ve never seen an audience mosh so hard to instrumental music before so that was new and exciting to see (from afar). Much more intense than Tides of Man with a lot of great energy and passion. While I didn’t stay for the entire show, I do see myself listening to more of the self proclaimed “Greatest Metal Band Ever” in the future.
