Photographers Mar + Vin ( Marcos & Kelvin )
Mar+Vin is a duo, formed by Marcos Florentino and Kelvin Yule. With backgrounds in Graphic Design and Journalism
MAR+VIN has contributed to a revolution in the way images are made in Brazil, adding artistic refinement to their photography to create stories that go beyond, while also playing an important role in the inclusion within the industry. Marcos and Kelvin often say that they are always looking for the "fantastic element" in the ordinary, creating powerful images with deep meaning and valuing their Brazilian roots.
Mar+Vin’s visual style is influenced by classical art with sculptural silhouettes and nods to symbolism, but they’re keen to incorporate local references from their Brazillian hometowns through locations and colour palettes.
Marcos was born in the state of Piauí, in a small village in the northeast part of Brazil. He started experimenting with drawing at a very young age and tried other medias as he grew up. Living his childhood in such a remote place, he found in the fine arts and in the books a way of dreaming with different and fantastic realities, helping him to accurate his vision, while watching his mother sew his sisters’ dresses for traditional Brazilian celebrations and graduations, which may have been his first contact with fashion. At 18, he moved to São Paulo and got a degree in graphic design through a scholarship. There he began to use photography as a form of expression and also expanded his art through experimenting with sculpture, ceramics, textiles, drawing and oil painting,
Kelvin is from the coast of Bahia, also in the northeast region of Brazil. He developed an inquisitive personality, mainly during his childhood as a queer kid growing up in a small town with a religious familly. At the age of 17, he went to university to study Social Communication and Journalism, where he directed his first short film and did some exhibitions exploring photojournalism, which led him to develop his interest in storytelling, bringing it to his photography as a way to reimagine things. Fashion appeared to Kelvin as a world of possibilities where he could express himself in multiple ways, telling untold stories through his own eyes. After meeting Marcos in 2016, he moved to São Paulo to develop his work in fashion, at which point they decided to unite their visions and creating the duo

Week 1 - Artist Research
Artist 1:  ERNESTO NETO
Ernesto Neto is a Brazillian conceptual artist with the main focus on installations and sculpture. Neto is primarily influenced by nature and the human body, especially the skin, and his work always constructed with interaction for viewers. His works consist of fabrics, transparent, stretchy material, styrofoam pellets and fragants spices to create his installations (Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, n.d.).
One of his work that I impressed with called ‘Mother body emotional densities, for alive temple time baby son’ displays his combination of fabric and spices. The Lyrca polyester fabric has been used to create a skin-like appearance. Spices including annatto, clove, cumin, ginger, pepper, and turmeric are packed inside the skin bags (Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, 2016).
From the work title, I perceived fabric to be the skin of one mother who was flabby after giving birth and raising her children. Neto also experiments with gravity, dropping the skin bags from the ceiling and making it look heavy at the bottom highlighting a mother's physical and emotional densities. Also, the aromatic spices can evoke nostalgic, home-felt senses that bring visitors an engaging sensory experience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Artist 2:  TOMÁS SARACENO
Tomás is an artist informed by the worlds of art, architecture, natural sciences and engineering. His works invite viewers to conceptualise innovative approach of living and interacting with others, and with their surroundings. Spiders and their webs have been a major inspiration for his work as he is the first person to scan, reconstruct and reimagine spiders’ weaved spatial habitats. The reimagine of spider webs have been convey through an installation in his ‘Silent Autumn’ exhibition (Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, 2022).
Information about the material for this work have not been found, but when visitors touch the strings of the web,  it will produce vibrations that echo spiderly modes of communication. The spider web in this installation is not just as a physical structure but as a musical instrument.
From my reading of this artwork, two meanings have been drawn. First, the interconnection of the strings expresses solidarity between human and non-human entities, fostering a sense of mutual respect and shared existence. Second, interaction with the work through sound and vibration mimics the non-verbal communication of spiders, this helps visitors realise that different species and cultures have different ways of understanding and interacting with the world.
This work is interesting as it engages visitors in a way that stimulates their senses and emotions, rather than just presenting visual information and constructing a very immersive art space.

Artist Research - artist 3
Erika Verzutti
Tumblr media
She is a Brazillian artist born in 1971, The majority of her work consists of sculptures that represent the wonderous alongside the real, which is portrayed through her constant use of vernacular material that consists of "imperfections" such as cracks, scratches and unwanted patches.
Tumblr media
Her work although whimsical and colourful at first has an impactful message behind each one of them. One of her messages behind her work consists of empowering the female gaze and exposing the overuse of the male gaze in media, she uses round fruits that represent the Venus of Willendorf, a Paleolithic fertility fetish for men 30,000 years ago to celebrate the power of creative appetite along with breaking down old misogynistic concepts created by men.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another one of the messages that got me fascinated by her was her dedication to her culture in each of her pieces, although the pieces had an underlying message every single one of them has an aspect of Brazilian culture, whether it be the colours, the form it has taken or even the collaborative artists she has worked with, every piece has brazils culture incorporated in it.
Verzutti's pieces grabbed my attention immediately as the sculptures themselves are imperfect, which every art piece is, and it clearly shows that instead of hiding it by smoothing the sculpture.
Tumblr media
Additionally, her use of vibrant colour appealed to me from the start with this piece, as it was calming yet prominent in her work which is what I want to do for this project. Her overall pieces have that sense of "bulkiness" that I want to incorporate in my game, which is why i chose her as an artist.

Bobo rant
Ok, @narvana27 this one’s for you coz I’ve mustered up some motivation to finally write some analyses just like you or @medeaminte
This one will cover our beautiful Brazillian boy Raimundo Pedrosa. Some spoilers are inevitable to mention, but the main focus is on the episode titled ‘The Return of Master Monk Guan’.
1.1 short synopsis of the episode:
Master Fung, seeing how the forces of evil grew in power, decides to send monks to another temple for their training. It turns out the new master that is destined to teach them is Master Monk Guan.
As for his methods, they are surprisingly cruel. Our heroes are not allowed to take breaks or even ASK QUESTIONS! Guan becomes that horrible general in military school who likes when cadets are blindly following his orders and train to the point they collapse due to severe exhaustion.
Rai, of course, sees that the way Guan treats his students is unfair and stands up for the rest. Which ends up bad for him. Guan punishes him with additional training and what is worse humiliates him through giving him insulting nicknames! Later on, the audience learns that this disrespectful behaviour of Master Guan was intentional. What is more, Raimundo knows about it as well. It was a part of the agreement between them, reached off screen without the knowledge of the other monks. The main goal of such a strategy was to lure Hannibal Roy Bean out of his hiding, let him believe Rai is ready to turn to the Heylin side (again) and snatch the Treasure of the Blind Swordsman from his little evil vines.
As the episode reaches its end, this plan as well ends in success. Bean is mad as hell and promises Raimundo that he’ll pay for it. Yeah, yeah happy ending. Cool. Rai gets one of the Spears of Guan as a gift for a succesfull colaboration with Master Monk Guan bla blah
BUT!
Even if it was all the play on Guan and Rai’s part throughout the whole episode, in my opionion Guan was too harsh anyway. I get it. He had to be plausible, but man... Rai literally cried when he banished him from the temple!
And this is an issue I wanted to talk about.
1.2. Let’s look at all ‘nicknames’ Guan came up with for Raimundo.
1. Young prince 2. bobo
3. someone dark, ruthless, shady, rebelious
I WANT TO PROVE RAI. IS. NOT. ANY OF THESE.
1.2.1.The insult ‘young prince’ (or princess) is often used when a young person is too lazy to finish chores or he/she is not willing to do them at all. Maybe it was Raimundo in s01, although he had never said ‘no’ to master Fung. He just wanted to go easy way, like swiping the dirt under the sofa instead of getting rid of it in a proper way. But mind you, it is season 3 and this boy has changed a lot. Sometimes you don’t have to work hard to get your task done. All it takes is an adequate situation assessment and good organisation of your work.
It looks as if Guan just doesn’t get it. Just like how vital breaks are in order to rise productivity.
Tumblr media
Rai made a right decision to stop training and lay on the grass. He knows what’s good for him and he stands by this intention to REST. Life is not ALWAYS about saving the world. He’s just a kid. Just like Omi, Kimiko or Clay. He’s defending his boundaries, but it appears no one’s respecting that choice.
Tumblr media
1.2.2. What about Bobo? Up to this day I thought that Guan wanted to underline that Rai acts like a clown, so he gave him a clown name. However, I came across this site. And guess. Bobo in Portuguese means ‘silly.’
Tumblr media
And my question is: Did Guan know? Hmm!? Did you know about it, Guan? If yes, I’m very disappointed in you. ‘Silly little clown boy’ - this is what Rai is? No, it’s not like he was the only one brave enough to fight Mala Mala Jong... or EVEN OMI when he turned heylin!
Tumblr media
It’s not like he has feelings or something... He’s the fun guy! Always chill! Not allowed to cry! His purpose is to entertain the rest, righ?
Tumblr media
NO. Rai is not only a capable warrior but also a very dedicated friend, who can sacrifice ANYTHING in order to save the rest. Let’s ennumerate how many people he saved throughout the series. People who live near the vulcano in Brazil, that Lady who turned out to be the Bird of Paradise.... OMI. The rest of his team a couple of times...
And what is more, every encounter TAUGHT HIM SOMETHING or had left some scars. He was possessed by Wuya, got beat up, and constantly he is accused of having EVIL TENDENCIES. What? Because ONE TIME he betrayed them? And that betrayal was justified because he felt hella ineadequate?
But yeah, Guan. Go on. He is just silly to get all the punches for the team. It’s not like he isn’t bothered when the forces of evil are victorious.
Tumblr media
Not at all.
1.2.3. Ok, I agree Rai is rebelious, but as I mentioned earlier - HE HAS REASONS to be that way. He feels something is wrong - he exclaims why this is wrong and tries to FIX IT with the help or without it. The thing is, in s1-2 prefers facing problems alone due to that inadequacy he’s often reminded of by his peers. It’s sad to see that monks never realised Raimundo feels that way. Luckily, in season 3 Rai grew as a character. He displays more and more leader characteristics. He comes up with better strategy and is ore connected to his friends. As a result their cooperation during fights is on a higher level, just like in the last showdown in that alternate timeline.
DARK, RUTHLESS, SHADY. - those are lies and I won’t comment on that
He can be ruthless only if someone hurts his family and friends. They’re gonna pay for that. Respect Rai for that.
2. My opinion on  ‘ The Return of Master Monk Guan’
2.1. Guan’s behaviour - this post is about it. Just wanted to add he is very inconsistent as a character and writers probably had no idea how to write him so they just randomly threw him to some plot points in order to give episodes smooth flow between scenes.
But yeah in that particular ep Guan is a jerk. First kidnapping Dojo, then overworking children only to kick out the most responsible one outta his temple with numerous sculptures of him, Dashi and replicas of his fav spear.
2.2 Monks’ behaviour - wanted to help, turned out bad. Omi as always was questioning Rai’s value and laughed at him bc of his new nicknames. Very mature of the chosen one, really.
2.3 My review
This episode was good because:
1. It's rai-centered
2. He put to use that clever brain of his and gave master Guan the idea how to retrieve the most powerful wu from Bean
3. He can KICK ASS, only refuses to use that against his friends. 4. good preparation for cheeseball to reconsider he's NOT ALWAYS THE BEST and should be aware of Raimundo's skills
2.4. Summary
Raimundo Pedrosa has one of the best character developments in animation history but most importantly he is the complete opposite of those things the other characters tell him he is. He learns from his mistakes and utilises the knowledge for his benefit to protect what he believes is right. He’s very compassionate young man, who can do great things and he WILL with guidance of his temple family.
But most importantly, he well deserved the position of the Xiaolin Leader. His name is not Bobo. Only Raimundo Pedrosa. Good friend, leader, warrior, the future hope for making the world a better place.

International Women's Day
I did a pretty long post for work celebrating International Women's Day through several different artists. Cross posting here for your viewing pleasure.
Tumblr media
Pictured here is a monument by American artist Maya Lin at Yale University, called the Women’s Table. It was commissioned in 1989, and in it, Lin marks the presence and absence of female students at the University since its inception in 1701 via a spiral of numbers paired with each year. The numbers end with 1993, when the sculpture was completed. The first female students were admitted to Yale in 1869.
Pictured here “Untitled” from 2004 by Brazillian artist Fernanda Gomes. Gomes’ installations are minimal in aesthetics but labor-intensive in their creation. She considers the exhibition space an extension of her studio, and by proxy, works intensively on-site with each of her creation. Her installations often tell a story of movement, assembly and disassembly, with just a few objects.
Pictured here is the recto side of “Or Else,” a painted and hung canvas by Australian artist Helen Johnson. Johnson’s paintings are almost never stretched on a support, but hung in a manner similar to a tapestry. Her creations thus straddle media and time periods, existing in a liminal space, questioning the history of painting and its relation to the fabric that grounds it.
Pictured here is “Eclipse” from 1970 by American artist Alma Thomas. Thomas’ paintings are known for their sense of rhythm and vibrant colors. They have a meditative quality to them, not dissimilar to the paintings of Agnes Martin. As a black woman, Thomas is also notable for the strides she made for the inclusion of artists with intersectional identities in the abstract expressionist movement, which is known for its focus on its white male practitioners.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pictured here is a still from Korean artist Kimsooja’s “A Beggar Woman – Lagos” video from 2001. Kimsooja’s work focuses on “non-doing” and immobility as forms of artistic practice. The artist never faces the camera in her video pieces, thus enabling the viewer to project their own identity on to her and imagine their own engagement with meditative and repetitive actions as art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pictured here is “Wall Stretch (Amazon Mist) by South African artist Gerda Scheepers from 2016. Scheepers focuses on the process of creating art as the end product in itself. Her work combines installation, fabric, and painting to resemble a studio space within the art gallery itself. Straddling multiple worlds, Scheepers work maintains an intentionally unfinished elegance.
We're ending our celebration of International Women's Day with the classic Self Portrait from 1556 by Italian Renaissance artist Sofonisba Anguissola. Anguissola was court painter to Philip II, and her talent was recognized in her own time by Michelangelo. Art historian Giorgio Vasari included a biography of her in his Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, written in 1550 and widely considered the first work of art history.

Sergio De Camargo - Large Split Relief No.34/4/74 - (1964-1965)
Artist Background:
Sergio De Camargo (1930-1990) is a sculptor & relief maker. He was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil but lived and worked in Sao Paulo for most of his life. Although figural sculpture predominated in his early years, Camargo experimented with wood reliefs, geometric abstractionism, and constructivism
What to look out for + Thematic Analysis:
During the years 1961- 1974, he concentrated on structuring monochrome white surfaces; some in  ‘Polyhederal Volumes of Mutable Readings’, he does this by using parallelepiped shapes with cylindrical wooden reliefs.
Camargo tries to display the world of chaos and order and fullness and emptiness by proposing the play of lights and visible shadows being manipulated and alternated.
Art Movement:
Neo-Concrete Movement -
During 1959-1961, the neo-concrete movement was born in Brazil from artists in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. A collection of Brazillian working in Concrete Art developed the Neo-Concrete Manifesto, which Camargo contributed to.
Here, artists rejected the purely rational and nationalist concept of concrete art. Instead Brazillian artists a less scientific art; they believed that concrete art should invoke a greater sensuality, colour, and poetry.
One of the aims of Concrete Art was the distancing of visual expression from figurative art, which has played a strong and definitive role in the past.
Neo-concrete artists would be attuned to contemporary theories of cybernetics, Gestalt psychology and optical experiments of international artists.
Artists who had belonged to the first wave of Concretism was dismayed to see a lessening in the rigor of color and form in the works displayed.

~Sexypink~ Tumblr may tremble at the humble space from which every man and woman enter the world. But I find it glorious! Talk among yourselves.
                         ****************************************************
Juliana Notari’s words on her work.
Amid so many rocks in the middle of this dystopian year, I finally finish the year with Diva ready!! It was a long process, almost 11 months of a lot of persistence, coexistence and learning.
Diva after all is a big hand made sculpture. As Roberto demonstrated, the engineer responsible for the work (and who puts his hand in the mass! ), could not use excavator, because she would not allow to accurately carve the reliefs she needed.
So it was over 40 hands to make Diva rise, over twenty men working in a heroin effort under the sun to pin, amid a lot of music and joke.
Diva is a Land Art, a massive vulva / wound excavation measuring 33 meters high, by 16 meters wide and 6 meters deep, covered by armed concrete and resin. In ′′ Diva ", I use art to dialogue with issues that refer to gender issues from a female perspective combined with a cosmopocentric and anthropocentric western society.
Currently these issues have become increasingly urgent. After all, it is by changing perspective of our relationship between humans and humans and nonhuman, that will allow us to live longer on that planet and in a less unequal and catastrophic society.
All I can do is thank for this long and rich process. Thank you Bruna Simões Pessoa de Queiroz, Ricardo Pessôa Filho, C Mabel Medeiros and Bárbara Maranhao for believing and betting on the project boldness.
I thank Roberto Gatis for the professionalism, patience and sensitivity (which contradicts the fame of engineers) and all the men who worked on the work: Felipe, Ricardo, Bergue, Brother Elias, Lilo, Neither, Lorinho, Stud, Node, Jau, Fernando, Powder, Renildo, Nando, Pigeon, brother Telmo's son and those who don't remember the name now.
Long live the Art Power Plant, this beautiful project coordinated by Bruna and Ricardo that has revived the historic and cultural landscape at this point in the Mata Sul Pernambucana.
PS: Diva is the fruit of my artistic residence in the Power Plant and a covenant of the Art Power Plant and the Museum of Modern Art Aloisio Magalh ãeses (MAMAMAM).

ARTIST STUDY -  ERNESTO NETO
ERNESTO NETO:
Ernesto Neto is a Brazillian Conceptual artist. Neto’s work manifests as installation sculpture works which offer a sensory experience for the viewer. Through touch, seeing, smelling, and feeling the work.  “For me, mind and body are one thing, always together,” (Artnet).
Tumblr media
“I believe in the sensual body, and i is through the movement of such body-minds that we connect the things in this world...” (Artnet).
I really love Neto’s sculptures - and the conceptual ideas behind them. This idea of an sensory or spatial experience is really intriguing, and makes me think of how my work could reflect that. This stretch, pull, and hang which can be seen in many of Neto’s work is the latest sort of elements of my practice that I am exploring further at the moment.
Neto’s practice explores boundaries of physical and social space through his tactile and biomorphic structures.
Tumblr media
Ernesto Neto , Kuruakema, glidancing with desire and reality beyond equator's sky, 2020.  Polyproplene crochet rope, quartz rose, black tourmaline, wooden hooks. (Above).
Getting my works eventually off the wall and maybe onto the celling, or on a structure, or in the middle of a space perhaps, like these works, I think is something worth thinking about,  and figuring out how that may be plausible within the spaces (studio/test space etc).
Tumblr media
Ernesto Neto, Yokumê Entitree Alegria Joy , 2020. Crochet with Polypropylene rope, cotton voile, expanded clay, cotton mesh, beans, wooden hooks (Above).
I am interested in scaling up to create a more immersive experience, but I don’t necessarily want to create something that is so obviously inviting, looks as though it is made for someone to immerse themselves in - if that makes sense.
I think it would create a different kind of bodily connection, to have a more interactive, larger scaled work - would also address space and the spatial qualities in a different way.
Tumblr media
Ernesto Neto,Anatomia Do Aconchego - Casa Nave , 1998 Medium :polyamide fabric, sand and Styrofoam pellets. (Above).

As I start thinking about what to show for wk 3 critique, Neto’s work is definitely serving as inspiration. I’m considering using a weight, or something to stretch/pull in my work and explore that kind of manipulation and evoke a sense of tension in the work.

Press Release:
Crumple brings together art objects concerned with the hybrid space between fragility and permanence. The works mine humble materials, be they fragile, quotidian, or provisional. All exude a certain vulnerability, and even humility, yet nonetheless, all are material objects.
Likening the humbleness of their materials to that of their message, the works make principled points without preaching, or avoid grand statements altogether. Some of the artists—such as Elaine Cameron-Weir (b. 1985, Canadian) and Maria Bartuszová (1936–1996, Slovak)— emphasize their work’s materiality, without endeavoring to transcend it. In her 2019 wall piece, as elsewhere in her work, Cameron-Weir emphasizes the hybrid delicacy and durability of industrial and functional objects: in this case, laboratory lattices and parachute harnesses. Bartuszová sculpts using plaster: she favored the material’s provisional connotations. The stacked sections comprising Untitled (1968–9) exude simultaneous precarity and sturdiness.
On the other end of the spectrum, Lin May Saeed’s (b. 1973, Iraqi-German) sculpture and relief comment on human-animal relations. Bilal (Pyramid) (2014) is based on a visit to Egypt, where the artist saw many stray dogs. Saeed’s chosen material—styrofoam—is prone to crumbling, yet also rather permanent: it does not biodegrade. The twinned pitiful and attractive qualities of Saeed’s styrofoam mimic the way one often perceives stray dogs, for whom the artist seeks to evoke empathy. Her strategy differs starkly from that of wagging fingers at human perpetrators, yet the live plants placed atop the structure gently remind us that all species are part of one ecosystem and are interdependent. Similarly, her styrofoam relief Hammar Marshes (2015) reflects on the dehydration of Iraqi marshlands—likely the site of the Garden of Eden—due to climate change. Even this sacred site is vulnerable. Nature is also found in Erika Verzutti’s (b. 1971, Brazillian) wall relief and Trevor Shimizu’s (b. 1978, American) two paintings. Verzutti deeply reveres natural beauty, and her practice is driven by the question: why does nature make certain things beautiful, even when it serves no obvious evolutionary function? For Dieta (2018), she cast bananas—which are abundant in her native Brazil—using papier-mâché, creating one-to-one copies of nature rather than endeavoring to subsume or outdo it. Similarly, Shimizu paints animals and mushrooms, but eschews the trope of sublime beauty common to landscape painting. He also does not attempt to “master” his medium. In Pigs, Horses, Birds (2016), he leaves the canvas unstretched, while the canvas for Shrooms 1 (2017) is small and most of its surface unpainted.
It is a pleasant coincidence that crumple and humble rhyme imperfectly.

Ceramic Sound Art Instruments
IDEA: Interactive ceramic sound art installations
WHAT: In the 'of Nature and Things' series, sound sculptures invite the viewer to wonder and play, and seduce the viewer to autonomously interact with each work. By approaching and touching it, the objects respond with magnified and designed electronic sounds. In each work a ceramic object is combined with other kinds of material, some materials can be found ready-made, in nature, where others are strongly manipulated by man.
WHY: The sculptures invite to independently, yet carefully, explore the layered possibilities of each work, and creates a private experience and relationship between the objects and the viewer occurs. Sonic, visual and sculptural qualities of all materials used, are being investigated, enriched and magnified.
BY: Fedde ten Berge is a sound artist who creates work in different contexts and disciplines. In his project 'of Nature and Things’ he develops sound art installations, that investigate the possible manifestations and combinations of different types of material, like ceramics. A substantial part of his research is to express the electrical capacity and vibrating qualities of the material.
The Trunk Instead of the field proximity capacitive sensing used in the other works, in The Trunk ten Berge used close proximity capacitive sensing. This enables the audience to use the water as a water percussion instrument, inspired by the water percussion performed by Brazillian native tribes.
""For the design of the ceramic trays, they look a bit like exploded chocolate cakes, I was inspired by the melted geometry by Salvador Dali.""
The Egg With The Egg, ten Berge focused on creating a sculpture in which light and sound design are integrated. This way, no external speakers or lamps are needed to create a total experience. The experience itself is based on the magical experience that you can have on our physical reality. One part of the sound design is based on the crackling of eggshells. The intensity of each egg crackle is coupled to a light flash on the LED strips. For me the tightness of the light sound interaction demonstrates the power of Bela. Another part of the sound design is based on a chord progression and a synthesis technique called phase aligned formant synthesis. Described by in Theory and Techniques of Electronic Music by Miller Puckette. There are mainly 3 nuances in playing the egg. When you move close to the egg the sound design becomes more intense. When you move out of the proximity field the chord changes. When you touch the water the most intense effect is achieved.
The Shroom The Shroom focusses on the vibrations that occur on different levels in the psychical reality of the artwork. Electromagnetic, acoustic, material and structural vibrations are picked up by different sensor strategies, which enables The Shroom to respond to the approach of the audience with carefully designed sound. In this way the visual design of the object comes in close relation with the sound design.
