The Jalapeno and Cheesy tears

Nate's in tears. Brad is laughing. Even stateside, those Jalapeno and Cheese sandwiches are a goddamn curse.

Translation: ‘Alapeno Sheezh Sannizh = Jalapeno Cheese Sandwich

Brad was waiting in the waiting room, leg bouncing in anticipation of waiting for Nate to be given the all clear and that Brad could go home. It was supposed to be a 45 minute appointment but it had already gone 10 minutes over the scheduled time, which had Brad worried that complications arose. “Brad Colbert?” The voice pulled Brad out of his worried thoughts as blue eyes snapped to the medical personnel addressing him. He offered no verbal acknowledgement but stood up the moment his name was called. “What’s the Sit-Rep?” The look of confusion the man of medicine gave Brad had Brad reword his phrase in civilian terms, “What’s the report on the LT? Were there complications? You were ten minutes over the scheduled time.” It wasn’t an accusation, just an observation with questionable tones at the lack of communication.

The man of medicine was well aware he was dealing with military men so he didn’t mind that he was being timed to the second. He brushed it off but focused on the important question as he lead Brad through to collect Nate. “No complications. Extraction can sometimes be a little … tricky. Soft foods for the next few days. Do not let him drink through a straw. I know it seems like the easiest option right now but if the hole doesn’t clot, he’s in for a world of pain. Salt water swirl but don’t spit… just let the water fall out of his mouth…” Brad listened intently to the Doctor, all of which he knew having googled about oral aftercare while waiting. “Now, he’s still quite groggy and high on painkillers. That will wear off in a few hours. Here’s the prescription for some pain killers to get him through the next few days. Any complications or questions, please feel free to ring us. Okay?” “Okay, thank you, Doc.” Ice cold blue eyes softened the minute they saw a slightly puffy cheeked Lieutenant who looked far more vulnerable than Brad has ever seen him. Those green eyes latched onto his blue ones and burst into tears. “I couldn’t find you a ‘alapeno and sheezh sannizh” the sad mumble of his Lieutenant and boyfriend greeted him. Brad smiled softly, forcing himself not to laugh. “I think I can forgive you for not finding a Jalapeno and Cheese sandwhich.” As Brad reached Nate, he gently wiped away those tears, well aware those deep forest green eyes were watching his every move out of amusement and curiosity. Brad held out his hand to help him out of the dentist chair, “Let’s get you home, sir.” Nate quietly let Brad lead him to the reception area where they both sat with reception to sign the paperwork and pay the fees. Everything was going smoothly until Nate’s voice interrupted the process, “You’re very tall. And handsome.” Poor Brad. As much as he loved the compliment deep down, he couldn’t help feel his cheeks heat up. Blue eyes flicked to the reception momentarily in an unspoken apology but the Receptionist was smiling, enjoying the soft interaction Nate’s eyes solely stayed on Brad as though he were the only thing in the room. Brad had a hard time focusing on processing the paperwork because even in Nate’s morphine-high state, he still managed to fluster Brad. Goddammit. Paperwork and fees finally processed through, Brad stood up and helped Nate up, bid the Receptionist farewell and held the door open for Nate. The last thing he heard from inside the building was the Receptionist laughing as Nate stopped in the door way and looked up at Brad. “How about we fin’e you a ‘Alapen Sheezh Sannizh an’ then you take me to bed…?” Brad had to gently nudge Nate out the door, thanking his lucky stars that Ray wasn’t here to witness all this. “Sir…with all due respect…but what the fuck?” He half expected Nate to argue back but Nate was already distracted with the cuff of the jumper he was wearing. It was going to be a long few hours until Nate shuts those pretty eyes of his.

Authors Note: It's super rushed. I do plan to edit properly and add more to the story. But for now, enjoy the cute lil idea that's been rolling in my head, rent-free, making me giggle a little. I just haven't had time to properly write but if I got a soft lil giggle out of it, I hope my other HBO shippers do too!

Day 19 - Formal Wear + Public 638 of not really kinky Brad/Nate fluff

It'd been years since Nate went to one of these. Even when he was in, he did his best to avoid them. After that, there were a lot of very good reasons to avoid the Marine Corps Ball. This year, though, there was no avoiding it. Once you reached a certain rank, attendance was socially if not technically mandatory, and that extended to spouses as well. The Corps was slowly starting to get the idea that maybe said spouses had their own careers and interests beyond the needs of the service, but if Nate skipped out he'd never be able to show his face again without rousing scandalous whispers. Homosexuality was no longer an excuse not to be present.

When Nate arrived, the room was an endless sea of mess dress and actual dresses. The gender balance being what it was, guys in tuxes like him were few and far between. Despite that, it wasn't hard to find Brad. He had a tendency to stand out, and that went double when he was decked to the nines.

"Master Sergeant Colbert," Nate said as he joined him.

Brad tipped his head, and with far more gravity that it deserved, replied, "Senator Fick."

"Sorry I'm late. My committee ran long and then I got stuck in traffic."

"A believable excuse, given how your legislature has chosen to proliferously spend the hard-earned money of myself and the other taxpayers of Maryland on various vanity projects." Brad gestured at the expanse of crew cuts and other poor stylistic choices. "You haven't missed much. No one's even gotten drunk yet."

"I'd like to think the Ball here in D.C. would be a bit higher class, but I suppose Marines are Marines anywhere."

"Speaking of higher class," Brad told him, "my base commander has expressed interest in meeting Mrs. Colbert."

"He understands the title is <em>state</em> senator, right?"

"At the moment."

"One thing at a time, Brad. One thing at a time." Nate followed a slight nod from Brad over to where a female brigadier was chatting with someone who Nate was pretty sure was an actual Congressman rather than a member of the JV team. "I suppose I should go suck ass if we want to make sure you get a sergeant-major's pension."

"You better. We can't maintain our extravagant standard of living on a state legislator's salary."

"Let's at least get a dance in first." Nate had to all but drag Brad out onto the dance floor with him as the band started up a slow number. Brad was rarely the smoothest person when it came to getting his groove on, but he usually didn't waltz like he had the proverbial broom handle up his ass.

"You know," Nate said after a few minutes, "if you don't loosen up, your subordinates and students are going to start thinking you're either a robot or deeply uncool."

"Do I look like I care whether a bunch of pimple-faced millenials think I'm cool?"

"We're millennials, Brad. They're Gen-X, I think."

"That makes me care even less."

"Is it really so bad being seen out in public with me?"

Brad suddenly stopped moving, a startled expression on his face. "Not at all."

"Don't panic, I'm just teasing. I know you like your privacy." If it were up to Brad, Nate suspected, he'd be out to their friends, family, and precisely no one at work beyond those needed for personnel matters. That had gone out the window when Nate had run for office. Suddenly they were once again the changing face of the American military.

"I'm a role model now," Brad replied with a small shrug. "I should get used to setting an example."

"If that's what you want."

"I do," Brad said, bending him over at the waist and kissing him deeply.

Summary: The one where Brad Colbert is a retired marine turned hitter-for-hire, Ray Person is a hyperactive motormouth hacker, Trombley is an unhinged kleptomaniac with little-to-no moral compass, Walt Hasser is a grifter who could get you to give him the last of your water in the middle of a desert and thank him, and Nate Fick is a retired Marine lieutenant who got sick of sitting around doing nothing and somehow ended up with four criminal masterminds on his hands to keep in line long enough to bring two corrupt but idiotic business men to justice.

“Ray, I need that exit,” Brad said, breathing heavily as he dragged the last security guard into a supply closet.

“Don’t get your panties in a twist, Bradley, this is a ten-digit passcode. It takes a delicate hand,” Ray replied, grinning as he watched the numbers spin.

“Yeah, well I can’t exactly stay here so I need that fucking exit,” he stressed, slipping back out into the hallway and moving quickly towards the door Ray was supposed to have open a minute ago. “I’m gonna be surrounded in thirty seconds if you don’t open that fucking door.” 

“Well I don’t know, punch someone. Isn’t that what you normally do?” Ray sassed just as the door clicked open. 

“Oh, I’m gonna punch someone alright,” Brad muttered to himself as he went through the newly-opened door. 

“Guys, we don’t have time for this. Our window is closing,” Nate said, effectively putting an end to their bickering. “Walt, do you think you can get in there and stall for us? Trombley is still in the vault.” 

“Yeah that’s a no-go, Boss. I know these guys. Schwetje thinks I’m a nephew of Raymond Patriarca from a money scheme a while back and I convinced his little toadie Griego that I was the grandson of the lost Grand Duchess Anastasia just last year. They may be stupid, but they’ll recognize me instantly. Sorry,” the grifter apologized, making sure to keep his back to the marks in question. Nate swore under his breath and drummed his fingers against his leg tensely. 

“Ray?” He tried. 

“No can do, LT. I’ve gotta be at my computer to get Trombley out of the vault when he gives the signal and I can’t do that out there. Plus, I can just feel my brain cells dying as I listen to you guys talk to them and I’ve only got so many,” the hacker said, only half-joking as he remotely opened another door for Brad. Nate sighed and wrung his hands but nodded to himself. 

“Yeah, you’re right. Brad? You think you could get in there and keep them busy for a minute?” He was grasping at straws now and he knew it. 

“That wouldn’t work. They already know me as Professor Alexander, and what reason would he have for being at this company meeting?” Brad pointed out and Nate groaned quietly in response. “Plus, my knuckles are a little bloody right now and I’m pretty sure even Hasser couldn’t explain that away.” 

“Fine, I guess I’ll have to do it myself,” Nate said, tightening his tie and fixing his cufflinks ot make sure he looked presentable.  

“Wait, really?” Brad asked, stopping short in the hallway at the prospect of Nate, their honest man, stepping out to grift. 

“Shit, this client must be really important to you, LT. Hey, what was his name again?” Ray asked with a grin, knowing that even though no one could see him that Nate had a blush rising in his cheeks. 

“Michael Wynn,” Walt practically purred into his comm, making the rest of them laugh.  

“Oh, fuck you both,” Nate responded, too busy trying not to sound flustered to come up with something more eloquent.

Congrats on the followers, you deserve it. Can I have a one shot with eventual reader x Nate Fick? If you do that? I had an ask before about reader joining as a sniper with a high kill count, could you write that as a story. She's an orphan, not emotional kinda cold, but can joke around and be mischievous at time, and is extremely loyal and is used to working alone, but ends up with the group. She's about 5'7 light blonde hair, brown eyes, pretty, smart, with a thin hourglass type figure.

(Also, I know about your ask from before. I’m sorry it’s taking me such a long time to get to. I’ll still write it out as headcannons but I’m definitely down for writing a one-shot on this. Get ready for some fluff, angst, and all around confusion.)

“Dead on, once again,” the Captain states, nodding in approval at your perfect aim. He taps his foot and you sigh, pushing yourself up off the ground. You shoulder your rifle and follow three steps behind Captain Thompson and Lieutenant Colonel Ferrando.

“She’s impressive,” Ferrando says in a raspy voice, “I’ll give you that much. How willing would she be to work with my Recon Marines on a mission?” You don’t even open your mouth to answer, knowing that the question was not directed at you.

“Of course she’d be willing,” Captain Thompson lies through his teeth. He knows full well how much you prefer working on your own. You’d rather get a root canal than be brought in with a bunch of men who are just going to jeer and stare at your rack. You chew on your lip to make sure you don’t say anything that could get you into trouble.

“Good,” Ferrando rasps, turning on his heel to look at you. You stand at attention, pulling your poker face and saluting the Lieutenant Colonel. He salutes you quickly and you move your hand down to your side. “I expect you to be packed and ready to leave by 1100 hours.”

“Yes, sir,” you shout.

“Dismissed,” he says, and you walk of to prepare for hell.

The truck rolls past the barbed wire fence and into the compound, where Marines are fixing cars, exercising, and screwing around. You find yourself getting slightly nervous at the thought of being surrounded by these guys for the next couple of months. Still, you keep yourself steady as the truck stops and you step out. You can feel heads turning as you walk into the Lieutenant Colonel’s tent.

“Corporal (Y/L/N), you have an impressively high kill count,” Ferrando states after sitting down at his desk and looking at some of the paperwork that is presumably yours. “Seventy-two confirmed kills. That’s pretty damn good.”

“Thank you, sir,” you say, not looking at him but rather at the wall of the tent behind him.

“You’ll be reporting to Captain Schwetje. Any more orders that you get will go through him. You should go find him, make sure he knows who you are.”

“Yes, sir,” you hesitate before saying anything else. Ferrando looks up questioningly.

“What is it, Corporal?”

“Do you know where I can find Captain Schwetje, sir?”

“No I don’t. I suggest you go ask around. Get to know some of the other men, considering that you’ll be working with them for quite some time.” You inwardly cringe at the suggestion.

“Thank you, sir.”

“Dismissed.” You turn around and walk out of the tent, your nerves beginning to get the best of you. As soon as you get outside the perimeter of the tent, you look around, trying to figure out the best place for a Captain to be. Looking around, you notice men staring at you so you cross your arms over your chest. You notice a large tent not to far away and go there, quietly praying that you’re not going to get any weird introductions.

Of course, that hope was quickly smashed when you walked inside the new tent, only to come face to face with a completely naked, stunningly gorgeous man. He tries to cover himself up quickly and you look anywhere but at him until there’s a towel wrapped around his waist. He steps forward and tries to shake your hand. You let out a deep breath and take his hand, finally gathering up the courage to look at him again.

“Hi, I’m Rudy,” the man says. You force a smile and shake his hand.

“I’m (Y/N), Bravo Company’s new sniper,” you add.

“Sorry about this,” Rudy states, gesturing to himself. “We weren’t sure when you were getting here.”

“And we didn’t think you’d be a chick,” someone shouts from behind him. You ignore the comment, making sure to keep looking at Rudy’s face so that your eyes don’t wander.

“I was just hoping to find Captain Schwetje,” you inform. You hear a couple groans and someone swears. Obviously, the Captain isn’t well liked.

“Sorry (Y/N), can’t say I know where the Captain is,” Rudy replies.

“You’re looking for Captain Schwtje, right,” someone asks from behind you. You turn around to see an attractive man standing in the opening of the tent, staring at you with amusement. You nod, keeping quiet. The man steps forward. “I’m Lieutenant Fick. I’ll help you find Captain Schwetje. Let’s just get you out of here.” He nods his head at Rudy, who’s still standing there with only a towel covering him. You smirk, shaking your head at the situation.

“Thank you, sir,” you say, beginning to follow him out.

“It’s Nate,” he corrects, “there’s no need to call me sir.”

You will admit, over the next couple of months, you grew closer to Nate than any of the other men. You just seemed to end up spending most of your time by his side. Then again, you grew close to all the men in the Command vehicle. Q-Tip and you pulled pranks on the higher ups, specifically the jackass that is Schwetje. Christeson taught you a bunch of songs so now you sing along with him while he’s driving, just to keep him company. Gunny was already the Company dad, but he specifically took you under his wing when you showed up. He became incredibly protective of you. He also became a major supporter of you and Fick getting together, despite the rules. Still, you always ended up by Fick’s side, messing around with him and talking for hours.

Recently, though, Nate’s been distant. You’re not entirely sure what you did, but you’re not happy about it. Gunny realized this last night and woke you up early this morning to talk to you.

“What the hell do you want,” you groan, grabbing your blanket and covering your head with it. Gunny pulls the scratchy blanket away from your face. You swear and sit up, nearly smacking foreheads with him.

“Come with me,” he whispers. You roll your eyes and get up, following Gunny as you think about the many ways that you could kill him right about now.

“Once again you old bastard, what the hell do you want,” you snarl. Gunny chuckles and grabs your shoulders, making you sit down in the passenger seat of the humvee.

“You need to talk to him,” Gunny says. You scoff and try to kick his shin.

“Who’s him, Gunny? I’m not a damn mind reader.”

“You are a bit of a bitch, though.” You glare at him and try to lunge, only to be blocked by his strong arms. “I’m kidding, hun. It’s just fun to mess with you when you’re tired.”

“I’m about two second away from clawing your tongue out.”

“You need to talk to Nate,” Gunny nearly shouts. “Be the bigger person and just go talk to him.”

“Why doesn’t he talk to me? I didn’t do anything wrong.”

“It’s not something you did. I think you know what it is.” You sit still for a minute, racking your brain to figure out what could’ve happened to make Nate not want to talk to you. Gunny realizes that you don’t have a clue. “Wow, you really don’t know?” You shake your head. “He’s falling for you, (Y/N). He knows it so he doesn’t want to break any rules so he’s keeping himself distant. And it’s a load of bullshit. So go talk to him before I lock both of you in a crapper until you confess.” You’re shaken by the information, because up until this moment, you’d ignored the feeling that you’d get in the pit of your stomach whenever you saw him. You thought nothing of it until hearing that Nate has feelings for you. Now, you feel the butterflies coming back, and suddenly you aren’t paying attention to Gunny. Instead, you’re intently focused on the soft voice speaking from somewhere behind you.

“Thanks,” you whisper, walking past Gunny and around the humvee to find Nate. Your legs are shaking and your palms feel sweaty. This is worse than your first day with the guys. You walk around until you find him, talking casually to Colbert. Brad sees you walking up and quickly excuses himself. Nate begins to walk away when you grab his arm.

“What is it, Corporal,” Nate asks, as professional as possible. Hearing him use your title instead of name stings a bit, and you loose a bit of your courage.

“Since when did you start calling me Corporal, Nate,” you whisper. He looks at the window of the humvee intently.

“I just think that we should be less informal. I’m still your CO, and you’re my sniper. It’s just not conducive to a friendship,” he says. You scoff indignantly, nearly smacking him.

“What the hell are you talking about? We’ve never had a problem before,” you retort.

“It doesn’t matter.”

“Of course it matters, Nate. I’ve known you since my first day here. You’ve been by my side the entire time. I don’t know what I would’ve done without you. You mean the world to me and I thought that I meant a lot to you. But now you’re pulling away and I don’t know what to do. I mean, I love you, for Christ’s sake. I don’t want to be without you.” You stop speaking as soon as you realize what you said. Nate stares at you intently, not saying a word.

He takes a step forward and grabs the back of your neck. He presses his lips against yours and pulls you in close. You hesitate before placing your hands against his chest. You deepen the kiss, moaning slightly at the sensation of being touched after so long of no physical contact.

Soon, he pulls away, and you whimper at the lack of touch. You keep your eyes shut for a few seconds after before you look up at him. He looks down at you with a look in his eye that you’ve never seen before.

“I’m in love you with, (Y/N). I’m so sorry that I was pulling away, but you need to understand how bad this is. We can’t be open about any relationship the two of us have or else we’re going to be kicked out.”

“I know,” you answer. “Just please don’t ever act like that again. I genuinely thought that you hated me or something.”

“I could never hate you. Even if I did, I don’t think you’d let me, Miss Seventy-Two Kills.” You laugh, placing you head on his chest, feeling content for the first time in a while.

A Rec List: Exceptions to the “No”

So, about ten million years ago, we posted our tropes survey. In it, people shared with us what tropes they liked most and least. But we knew that that’s not the whole story—there are exceptions. Fics that are so good they transcend the trope you don’t like. Ones where you start your recommendation “I don’t normally like X, but...”

So we put out a call for people to share their exceptions, and a few of you answered, and then the American political landscape caught on fire and we let it go for months. But we’re back in the saddle now! We’re not sharing who recced what because we didn’t say that we’d be doing that and we don’t want to violate anyone’s privacy. “To The Sky Without Wings,” Leupagus. 81k words, rated Mature. Fandom: Star Wars Ship: Poe Dameron/Luke Skywalker The reccer sez: As an educator, I'm really put off by student/teacher relationships and unequal power dynamics, but Gus handles these delicate situations both beautifully and realistically (to clarify: the student/teacher bit is unrequited but the relationship becomes more romantic later in life). Warnings: Author chose not to warn (but you get some idea from the rec).

“Angel Slayer,” emwebb17. 13.8k words, rated Explicit. Fandom: Supernatural RPF Ship: Jensen Ackles/Misha Collins The reccer sez: I am a Supernatural fan and always refused to read ANY kind of Supernatural RPF fanfiction. I was even thrown off by any reference to real-life anything in SPN fic. Well, that was until last week. [Emwebb17] kept the characters from Supernatural but had more freedom with them (the two brothers are not brothers anymore and are getting to know each other, which is awesome so read). I usually think that serial killer plotty fics are annoying and never surprising, but this one... wow. Warnings: Mild breathplay; graphic depictions of violence.

“A hole in the world,” AnnelieseMichel. 302kwords, rated Explicit. Fandom: Supernatural Ship: Castiel/Dean Winchester; Jessica Moore/Sam Winchester The reccer sez:  I am very not into A/B/O but "A hole in the world" was absolutely amazing, it focuses on the civil rights movement of A/B/O dynamics in a way that reminds discrimination against women and LGBT, and everything is very smart. This fic goes beyond the sexual aspects of A/B/O and makes it only about the societal power dynamics, it's fascinating. Well, until the Mpreg at the end, which I don't love. Warnings: Graphic depictions of violence; rape/noncon.

“Don’t You Shake Alone,” Dira Sudis. 62k words, rated Explicit. Fandom: Generation Kill Ship: Brad Colbert/Nate Fick The reccer sez: I HAAAAAAATE kidfic. I make no apologies for this—I'm not a "kid" person and I don't ever want kids of my own, so why would I want to read about my favorite characters having kids? But my ironclad exception to this rule is Dira Sudis's Don't You Shake Alone, the Brad/Nate relationship of my dreams, plus a baby so adorable even I am helplessly forced to adore him.  I have read it many many times. Warnings: No AO3 warnings apply.

“Last Outpost Of All That Is” by gekizetsu. 62k words, rated NC-17. Fandom: Supernatural Ship: Wincest The reccer sez: Despite not liking the incest trope at all, this fic is BRILLIANT and I can't rec it enough. It's well-written, deals with heavy themes and packs incredible emotional punches. Warnings: Incest, obviously.

And last but not least, a rec for an author’s entire body of work...

The reccer sez: @writelikeitsgoingoutofstyle (tumblr/A03). Hamilton fandom, writes a lot of kink fic that I'm usually Not About That, but Holy Jesus. Kris writes THE BEST kink fic—no the BEST SMUT I have ever read in my 10+yrs in multiple fandoms. It is always filthy but yet so loving and legit (consent! aftercare!) that I can finish a fisting fic feeling like I just read pure fluff. 1000% will read anything Kris does, any pairing/kink!
