November Reading and Reviews by Maia Kobabe
I post my reviews throughout the month on Storygraph and Goodreads, and do roundups here and on patreon.
H is for Hawk written and read by Helen MacDonald
I listened to this as an audiobook in the author's voice and absolutely adored it. Its a memoir of grief, unfolding primarily in the one year after the death of the author's father. It is also a brief history of falconry in Britain, the story of a goshawk the author trained, and an examination of the legacy of TH White, British author, closeted homosexual, and amateur falconer who ruined a bird with his own obsessions and neuroses. Macdonald's descriptions of landscapes, weather patterns, and birds in flight are as lyrical and lovely as the recording of depression and social isolation are devastating. Highly recommend.
Animosity Vol 1: The Wake by Marguerite Bennett, Rafael De Latorre, Rob Schwager, Marshall Dillon, Juan Doe
One day, all of the animals of the world wake up to human level consciousness, and most of them turn to violence against their human oppressors. Humans reel in the aftermath of this complete overturn of the world as we've known it. A few animals stay loyal to their human families, and this story follow one of them- Sandor, an elderly bloodhound, who promises his 11 year old human Jess that he will keep her say and travel with her across the country to find a half brother she has never met. Fast paced and thought provoking, the first of a ongoing series.
PS I Still Love You by Jenny Han
As charming and fast paced as the first book in the series. This story unfolds more of Lara Jean's life, the sweeps of her emotions, her deep love of her family, an internship at a retirement home, and the tangled lines of old friendships and crushes. The writing in these books is so grounded and warm, it feels like a breath of fresh air compared to some of the YA I've struggled with in recent years.
A Pros and Cons List for Strong Feelings by Will Betke-Brunswick
I was given the opportunity to read this book ahead of its release! Here's the blurb I wrote for it: Life does not deliver a series of discrete events, but a tangle of overlapping experiences. The author was working on a mathematics degree, playing on a hockey team, and slowly coming out as trans and nonbinary when their mom was diagnosed with cancer. This book weaves memories from the author's childhood with scenes from the last few months of their mother's life into a tender story of acceptance, care, and love. The heavy moments are lightened by the portrayal of the family as penguins, with friends and strangers as a flock of other birds, but the story is deeply human.
Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire, read by Cynthia Hopkins
This series introduces Eleanor West's Home For Wayward Children, a boarding school for children who, like Alice, fell into another world; and returned to find they were completely out of step with life back on home. Some of these children went to magical fairylands full of rainbows and rhymes. Others went to strict authoritarian worlds ruled by logic and law. Nancy went to the land of the dead, and spent a peaceful year learning the values of stillness, silence, and the whispers of ghosts. She hates Earth on her return and the pressures of her family to "just be normal." But she finds companionship and understanding at Eleanor West's school. Until, that is, a bloody murder shocks the little school community and fear and suspicion turn in Nancy's direction. This is a slim fairy tale of a book, not a murder mystery. I loved this unique take on portal fantasy and the magical boarding school genres. The story includes trans and asexual characters, which I appreciated, even though I found some of the dialogue around those identities a little chunky. I sped through the short audiobook in just a few days and plan to keep reading this series.
Boys Run The Riot vol 1 by Keito Gaku
High schooler Ryo knows that he's trans, but doesn't feel like he can tell anyone; it seems safer to repress this part of his identity. His school system requires gendered uniforms and Ryo hates wearing skirts, so tries to get away with wearing his PE track suit to school as often as possible. But he also fears standing out and the potential judgement of his peers. The only time Ryo feels like himself is after school when he roams the city in his own chosen street style, expressing his frustration and yearning through graffiti art. When Jin, a rough looking older boy who had to repeat a grade, joins Ryo's class, Ryo plans to steer clear of him. But then Ryo runs into Jin in a store and it turns out they share a taste in fashion and buried desire to break out of the molds society has built for them. Jin urges Ryo to start a fashion brand and tell his truth to the world at last. I was excited to try a manga series which centers a trans character, and which is also written by a trans author. This first book was a little shaky for me. The emotional beats felt clunky and rushed, and the antagonist boringly stereotypical. Nevertheless, I like the premise a lot, and will probably read at least one more volume to see if the writing smooths out a bit farther into the series.
Down Among The Sticks and Bones written and read by Seanan McGuire
An excellent second installment in the Wayward Children series. This one follows two characters we got to know in the first book, twins Jack and Jill, daughter of a pair of yuppie control freaks who didn't let their children make any of their own choices. No wonder a door opened for them, and let them escape into another world. It was a world of vampires, werewolves, and cursed sea monsters, but it was still better than what they'd left behind. I enjoyed this a lot, but was also interested from a writing perspective to think about how much territory it retread from information given in book one; and how successful it still felt despite that. It made me reflect on my own relation to ideas that feel "book worthy" and whether I could also be developing smaller thoughts into satisfying stories.
The Hand On The Wall by Maureen Johnson read by Kate Rudd
What an excellent conclusion to a three-book mystery arc! This one picks up right where the second one left off with Stevie, our anxious and brilliant teen detective, trying to fit together the pieces after a third death in as many months, with hints, rumors and uncertainty on every side. And oh how those pieces fit! I don't even want to say anything about the plot because to do so might spoil some of the events of the first two books, but I think this one is the best yet of the series and I am excited to see what comes next.
A Sentimental Education by Hannah McGregor
This is an essay collection I know I will return to again and again. Hannah McGregor, host of two of my favorite podcasts, Witch Please and Secret Feminist Agenda, tells the story of her own feminist education through six essays written in the first person, a deliberate act to carry over the voice she developed in podcasts into her writing. The first essay introduces a theme that recurs throughout of the uses and agendas of sentimental literature, especially books about white women caring deeply about things, in a way that can spark equal emotion in the reader, which has the potential to either, or both, stir political action or else prop up white supremacy. One of the major questions of the text is whether reading certain kinds of books, or reading in certain kinds of ways, can make the reader a better person- more empathetic, more motivated to strive for justice and equality. Caring about others is a feminist project, and McGregor questions where this care falls inside institutions like the university, who is able to ask for and receive care, who is able to give it or refuse giving it. McGregor asks these questions as a queer, fat, asexual, white university professor with a tenured position and constantly acknowledges her own position and also where her knowledge comes from. One of my favorite pieces is the many quotes woven through the text, as well as references to longer conversations I experienced in podcast form. I am so grateful for this book, and excited to annotate it on my second pass!
Slip by Marika McCoola and Aatmaja Pandya
Jade, a ceramic artist, is accepted into a prestigious summer camp for teen artists hoping to build their portfolios and win college scholarships. Three weeks before she is due to leave, her best friend Phoebe attempts suicide, and Jade isn't able to see Phoebe or speak to her before Jade has to leave for art camp. She is naturally distracted, not able to focus solely on her work because she's thinking so much about her friend. Then some of Jade's sketches and sculptures start to come to life, and Jade has to rethinking why she makes art, what she's trying to express, and who it is for. This is a beautifully illustrated and emotional coming of age story with a queer lead. The plot is quite simple but I was drawn in by the limited palate, dry bush line art, and the creative struggle.
Other Ever Afters by Melanie Gillman
I absolutely loved this collection of queer fairy tales. I'd read about half of them online (Melanie Gillman posts an original fairy tale comic every year in October, on 24 hour comic day) but it was a pleasure to see these familiar pieces presented in this new anthology. I also loved all of the new stories and the interwoven themes of belonging, self-naming, queer love, rebellion, and abolition of monarchy in fantasy settings. All of the art is done by colored pencil and the rich tones, smooth shading, and smart color palettes all please me right down to my artist's core.

147. Boys Run the Riot, Vol. 1 - licensed - I've been meaning to read this story about a trans boy getting into street fashion, and it does not disappoint. I like how it was written and translated by trans people, and how the story is bringing together kids who feel alienated.

punk bands of color recs? if you could also rec your favorite album by each band so i can listen to it first it can be overwhelming to sort through them ^_^
[image id: a tumblr ask from an Anonymous user which reads “i’d love to hear [about] any punk bands of color that you like!! as many as you want ^^” /end id]
totally!! thank you for the interest, here’s a list of bands i really enjoy, an album (linked on spotify), and a blurb about each of them!!
pinkshift — rainwalk — okay they only have 3 singles out rn but they are my favorite !! theyre from baltimore md and have an angsty pop punk / riot grrrl vibe and their music is perfect to fuck up your hair to
ho99o9 — cyber cop [unauthorized mp3.] — pronounced “horror”! industrial hip hop / anarchic hardcore punk blend with a sickening horror inspiration. their live shows are fucking nuts and they’re based in LA!!
nova twins — who are the girls? — LITERALLY ICONIC love their style love their music and theyve been using their platform to uplift other marginalized creators! check out the voices of the unheard playlist!
turnstile — nonstop feeling — hardcore punk metal band from baltimore md !! they have 3 albums out rn and each of them rocks
the muslims — gentrifried chicken — self-described as “all-queer, Black & Brown punk band that’s politically and punklitically ruthless” !! their music revolves around sick lyrics and sicker sound. get into it
le butcherettes — sin sin sin — experimental genre-bending mexican garage punk band with teri gender bender as the main vocalist/guitarist
big joanie — sistahs —Black feminist punk band from london’s diy scene! their start stems from the frustration with the scene’s lack of intersectionality & establishes that woc have always had a place in punk
krimewatch — krimewatch — hardcore punk band from new york city! killer energy and vicious lyrics in japanese and english.
death tour — blood pact — i dont even know where to start with this one tbh!! aggressive music with engrossing genre blends and an unwavering anti-authoritarian worldview
drinking boys and girls choir — keep drinking — punk trio from daegu city in korea! they have a great range of musical styles and their spirit is so fun it’s infectious
letlive. — the blackest beautiful — no longer an active band but they’ll always have a spot in my heart. sick post-hardcore stuff with heavy-hitting music and politically inspired lyrics !!
skatune network — ska goes emo (vol. 1) — a must-listen if you’re into ska!! skatune network mostly does covers, but check out their other works with we are the union and their solo project JER
rebelmatic — ghost in the shadows — fresh noise and gritty vocals; their sound is reminiscent of classic punk rock with hardcore / funk / hip hop inspiration
pleasure venom — pleasure venom — huuuge fan of their voice. they emphasize heavy riffs, high energy melodies, and sharp vocals!
meet me @ the altar — garden — pop punk trio from the east coast! they are thriving rn and recently recently got signed to fueled by ramen
the OBGMS — the OBGMs — short for The oOohh Baby Gimme Mores! sickk rock band with a bunch of recent releases to check out
otoboke beaver — itekoma hits — punk rock garage quartet from tokyo, japan. totally crazy energy and super lively performances !!
the kominas — the systems are down — south asian, subversive, inclusive, cathartic punk. they make it a point to challenge their listeners expectations. love their sound
the punk scene is incredibly whitewashed and white punks love to ignore the racism/fascism running rampant in their circles. do your part to support artists of color and make it clear that bigots aren’t welcome! here’s another list of poc in alternative music, but the post is from a couple years ago at this point ^_^ please feel free to add more recs if you have em!

BNHA Chapter 325 Spoiler Analysis: United As One
The week has passed and so has summer. Damn... At least Shonen Jump’s got my back. And Deku is finally welcome home thank god. Now, give this kid a damn good meal, sleep, and a motherfreaking bath already. NGL, this week has been busy for me and I’m tired AF, so I think I’ll only go over the parts that stuck out to me:
Man, god bless Kota for running up to Izuku to help him! This kid has been through so much yet he still decided to run up to Izuku to help him. He’s sobbing his eyes out too 😭. I’m pretty sure he’s apologizing for not moving during the Muscular fight (in Kota’s defense, Izuku would’ve probably died if not for Kota) and he’s telling Izuku that “I am here” (OF COURSE HE SAYS THOSE WORDS) so Izuku doesn’t need to cry anymore. And to top it all off, Kota calls Izuku “Nii-chan” which I’m pretty sure means older brother 😭❤️ If Horikoshi brings Eri in next week, I’m going to cry waterfalls dammit
The Fox Lady is so kind and pretty dammit Horikoshi give her a name already! She’s so happy to see Deku again and thanks him for saving her. Even calls him “Mr. Crybaby Hero” 😭 The way she picks him up like a small child is both sweet and funny too ☺️ I await the fanart!
A-AND THEN SHE AND KOTA HUG DEKU 😭💚💚💚💚
On a more serious note, the Fox Lady mentions that she got rejected from a lot of evacuation centers because they don’t accept mutant types like her. Of course discrimination still exists in this world. Of freakin’ course. Just like in the real world... And considering that Horikoshi mentioned that Shoji would have a role in the future and also show his face finally in some interviews (Horikoshi also teased that he wanted to give Shoji a bigger story YEARS ago), I have a feeling this subject will be brought up again in the future.
The Old Star Man from the first chapter/episode who encourages Deku to be a hero returns this chapter to give a big speech to the crowd. This guy is a real one ✊. Basically, he says that the crowd needs to shut up and understand what’s going on for a hot minute. That everyone projected All Might’s “Perfect Heroness” onto the every other hero that they all forgot that Heroes are just people at the end of the day. If the people don’t support the heroes still fighting now, they’re screwed. Ultimately, it’s the civilians who have to save the heroes when they’re hurting. Not just other heroes. Horikoshi, please give this man a name too, he’s long deserved it.
Then the boy in the All Might shirt who’s been protesting for the past 2 chapters says something reasonable for once. His views on Deku have been mixed around thanks to all the things that have been rumored about Deku on the internet and word of mouth. Which kinda justifies his anger and doubt, but he still should’ve have been a jerk to Deku and Ochako.
Deku finally speaks a full sentence declaring that he and his friends and mentors will make everything ok again. I can’t wait to see that promise be fulfilled, my son 💚
We change focus to Shoto, Endeavor, and Hawks (who are confirmed to have been outside the barrier for the past few chapters; I was wondering about that). They’re finally being allowed into UA for now. Unfortunately the 3 of them probably would’ve caused more discourse if they entered while the civilians were rioting. Endeavor and Hawks from the press release and just Shoto existing really. Please let them stay there permanently.
Gotta say that Endeavor looks so freaking tired throughout this whole thing. The Toya thing + The Deku thing must be weighing extremely heavy on him. I do feel bad for him honestly.
Hawks tells Endeavor how OFA has, in a way, connected everyone together. All Might to Deku to Class 1-A back to Deku to Ochako to the people. And if the people can truly care for others, then the future will be bright and heroes will have all the time in the world just like Hawks wanted at the very beginning of his story.
There’s this really beautiful double page spread (teased in one of Vol. 31′s extras) of the civilians offering their umbrellas to the kids. Kirishima’s crying happy tears, Kota and Mineta are running up to Deku, the All Might Shirt dude is offering Deku his umbrella, Kaminari is smacking Bakugo over the head 😂, Iida’s holding Deku’s hand to guide him, and INKO FINALLY GETS TO BE WITH HER SON THANK THE LORD 💚😭
Shoto 💙 Our resident pretty boy is looking at this scene and ultimately decides that he and Endeavor are going to stop Dabi together. He decided this before back in the hospital, but I think his decision is more final here. I really need him to properly reunite with Deku though and I’m sure they have A LOT to talk about.
AND WE FINALLY GET TO PROPERLY SEE AIZAWA AFTER GOD KNOWS HOW LONG AND HE’S SO HANDSOME 🖤 MY MAN IS LOOKING GOOD WITH AN EYEPATCH?!? And he does have a prosthetic robot leg and apparently Mirko does too. God, he looks so tired, but he’s so proud of his kids Imma cry again 😭
Anyway, it’s looks like he’s still recovering from the war in the hospital and apparently also there to help with the whole Kurogiri situation, who’s been transferred to a research lab. It seems like Aizawa’s trying to bring back Shirakumo somehow. If they do, I wonder if Shirakumo will even still be alive. We can assume that he might still be alive since he did tell the Heroes about the hospital, but it’s uncertain. It would be nice to have that sweet soul back 🌤
Also, the Heroes are aware that Himiko Toga’s still out there and they’re taking extra persuasions to make sure she isn’t one of the refugees. They also know her limits too, so that’s good.
The last panel is of All Might standing outside of UA, but his back is turned against them. He has this uncertain look on his face too. I honestly can’t read it for the life of me. I gotta wonder why he isn’t walking in there now that everything seems to be ok. Maybe he doesn’t want to accidentally cause more problems? The public did start to hate him with the whole “I Am Not Here” sign on his statue in Kamino... Deku does need him though. Ugh, I’m so worried for this man.
And I do have a theory. It’s a long shot and a dark one: What if Toga found Stain while running off and they teamed up together. Then Stain found and took All Might captive and Toga took some of All Might’s blood to transform into him and now she’s the one outside of UA. I can’t say if All Might is dead or not. I really, really, REALLY, don’t want him to be dead. Stain says that All Might is the only one truly worthy of being a Hero, so I doubt he would actively kill All Might. But, god there’s so many death flags surrounding this man. I don’t even know if he’s going to make it through the entire series tbh.
The end chapter teaser says “The rain continues on...” so I doubt this pain is over. We have a bit of a calm, but I am so anticipating the next storm.
Me waiting for even more pain:

Reluctant Reader Wednesday: Boys Run the Riot Vol.1 by Keito Gaku
Ryo is transgender, but is afraid to confide in anyone. He doesn’t want to wear a girl’s school uniform anymore, but he also doesn’t want to answer his mother’s questions about why he “dresses like a boy.” When a new boy named Jin joins his class, Ryo thinks the same thing as everyone else: that Jin is a tough bully and a scary guy. But when Ryo and Jin meet outside of school while shopping for the same clothes, they realize that their interest in fashion might be strong enough to overcome their differences. Will they be able to stay together long enough to create their own fashion brand, or will this be too much of a challenge?
This story was written by a transgender manga creator, and it was one of NYPL’s 2021 Best Books for Teens. Give this book to teens and adults who are interested in LGBT characters, creativity, and overcoming odds.

Quarantine Reads Part 7
part 1 | part 2 | part 3 | part 4 | part 5 | part 6
151. The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver: one of my mom’s buddy read pick. alternating pov. accidental baby acquisition. road tripping.
152. His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik: HOW did I miss that Naomi Novik had a whole dragon series??? HOWMST??? these are seriously right up my alley: dragons can talk and are partners with their riders, some dragons only let LADIES ride them (!!!), alternate history. plus there’s like 9 OF THEM??? amaze.
153. A Conspiracy of Kings by Megan Whalen Turner: book 4 in the queen’s thief series (now complete!). political intrigue, gods are real and semi-present in people’s lives, greekish adjacent.
154. Heartstopper: Volume Two by Alice Oseman: yes i had already read these panels online, but my print copy came in so obviously it was time to reread (it’s going to be a tv show!) (also its still updating!)
155. The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson: meticulously researched, interwoven personal stories, the book is HEFTY but reads pretty quick
156. The Architect’s Apprentice by Elif Shafak: really cool story set in the height of the ottoman empire, follows Jahan, the elephant keeper, and how he came to be there and him growing up
157. Longbourn by Jo Baker: a retelling of pride and prejudice from the servants’ point of view, content warning: wickham preying on like a 12 year old, witnessing a whipping, descriptions of starvation, being a soldier in the napoleonic war
158. People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks: a ridiculously old Hebrew manuscript thought to be lost is found in Sarajevo, a conservator goes to examine it and finds several clues to the provenance of the text, follows the clues through history and flashes back to the present as the conservator tries to follow up on the clues, based on the true story of the Sarajevo Haggadah; content warning: murder, Holocaust, giving birth, the Inquisition
159. Goalie Interference by Avon Gale: hockey m/m romance between a set of tandem goalies on a fictional professional hockey team, lots o sex
160. What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli: coming of age story set in nyc the summer before college, trying to figure out who you are, missing connections, some bad communication that gives way to good communication
161. Trade Deadline by Avon Gale: a hockey player gets traded after many seasons on the same team to his hometown team that is struggling to bring in fans, he reconnects with a childhood friend (and first kiss) who helps run the local aquarium, cuteness ensues, romance (so there’s sex)
162. The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead: two slaves manage to escape Georgia on the Underground Railroad, which, in this imagining is a series of safe houses and actual trains, follows their lives after that; content warning: violence, whipping, hunting people with dogs, severe illness, murder, racism
163. Small Gods by Terry Pratchett: 13th in the discworld series, this one explores the makings of a religion and how gods that have fallen out of favor can get a resurgence, very funny, highly ridiculous
164. Are You Listening? by Tillie Walden: graphic novel, Bea is on the run, runs into Lou, they find a cat, strange and dangerous stuff starts happening to them, magical realism, towns appearing and disappearing, haunted by a group of threatening men? creatures? unclear
165. The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix: a fun fantasy novel, old gods still exist, demons exist, a special family of booksellers are the main ones in london trying to stop them from wreaking havoc on the mundane population, a girl discovers her father is not what her mom told her
166. Bloom by Kevin Panetta: graphic novel, ya m/m getting together and falling in love, a boy is helping out in his parents’ bakery reluctantly when he is given permission to hang a help wanted flyer and meets the boy who becomes one of his best friends and maybe more
167. The Deal of a Lifetime by Fredrik Backman: short story, follows a father and son’s relationship
168. The Secret History of Wonder Woman by Jill Lepore: non-fiction, follows the author of the original wonder woman comics and his life, he seems like an ass to me though
169. Alif the Unseen by G. Willow Wilson: a hacker and his network is targeted after sleeping with/romancing the fiance of the government official tasked with rooting out those people trying to avoid the regime, alif is forced to go on the run with the literal girl next door and manages to accidentally stumble into the world of the djinn; content warning: imprisonment, torture, starvation, riots, murder
170. The Midnight Library by Matt Haig: in the space between life and death, there is a library, full of every what if you can think of and many more that you didn’t, follows the protagonist as she explores her own life many times if she had made different decisions along the way
171. A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers: a crew that punches wormholes through space to make travel easier is given a huge contract that would set them up financially, but will take a massively long time to get to, and when they do, all is not as it seems, changing POV throughout the crew of a couple humans, a few differing alien species, and an AI as they go to do this job,
172. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows: epistolary novel set just after WW2, juliet ashton is a writer who receives a letter from Guernsey Island in the English Channel and they spark a friendship, after learning more about his experience during the war and his relationship with books, she starts corresponding with others from the island and eventually goes there herself. this is my actual favorite book. the love story is super sweet plus the friendships are A++++
173. Unshelved by Bill Barnes: comic strip collection set in a local library, follow the librarians as they battle loud teenagers, preteens who don’t want to read, and people who think the library is for anything but finding books to read
174. Ms. Marvel, Vol 1: No Normal by G. Willow Wilson: Ms. Marvel origin story, follows a teenager in Jersey City as she accidentally and suddenly acquires superpowers while trying to still make her curfew and not disappoint her parents and get good grades
175. Feast of Famine by Naomi Novik: short story set in the Temeraire series, won’t make sense unless you’re familiar with the worldbuilding
