let's hear it for the nonbinary folks who:
don't present androgynously
use "binary" pronouns in any capacity
identify partially with a binary gender
have a "gendered" name
don't experience body dysmorphia
don't experience gender dysphoria
DO experience gender dysphoria/body dysmorphia but aren't sure what gender or body would suit them
just experience body/gender apathy instead
can't be open about their gender identity yet
you're all absolutely valid.
don't ever feel like you're "not nonbinary enough" because you absolutely are! 💖

Nex Benedict's death wasn't just for being transgender, it was for being native too. 2 Spirits are revered in many native cultures and it is a native-specific identity. This wasn't just a hate crime against trans & NB individuals, this was also a hate crime against Natives of Turtle Island.
You cannot separate Nex's trans identity from their native identity - this is a case of MMIWG2S (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2 Spirits).
Native children being killed at school is nothing new, so it's equally important to talk about Nex's native identity and being intersectional, this is a devastating tragedy for indigenous people, the queer community & especially those of us who are both indigenous and queer.
May Nex rest in peace 🪶
#too many people are ignoring their indigenous identity and how that plays a role in what happened#because 2 spirit is a trans AND indigenous identity - you cannot separate the two#and it is a disservice to Nex and all other 2 spirit to do so#as a queer indigenous woman my heart aches for Nex and their family#we as indigenous people have lost too many children to violence at schools#and we as queer people have lost too many to the rise of transphobia and TERFs and their attitudes#nex benedict#mmiwg2s#2 spirit#indigenous#queer#indigenous & queer#intersectionality#racism#transphobia

alright boys, girls, neither, both, and those in between we need to clear something up:
if someone says they are queer, they are queer.
no ifs, ands, buts, etc. they are queer.
and if they discover later that they're cishet, great, amazing, wonderful, i'm glad we gave them community when they were figuring themselves out and needed it.
no gatekeeping of queerness here, alright?
because when shit hits the fan queerphobes wont care whether you're a cis gay man who goes by he/him or a bigender aromantic pansexual who goes by it/its
so stop with the respectability politics.
we're a community, fucking act like it.
#im tired of all the shit so id thought id clear this up#if you gatekeep other ppl's identities just shut up#important#queer#queer community#lgbtq#lgbtqia#lgbtq community#trans#gay#lesbian#bisexual#intersex#asexual#aromantic#pansexual#bigender#genderfluid#genderqueer

"queer identities are getting too complex" good. be complex. confuse cis people. confuse straight people. aim to be what cishets call cringe. be incomprehensible. be unfathomable.

On this fine day, at 8:37 AM, I walked outside to the front of my school and saw that they replaced the Canadian flag, the flag of our country, with a Pride flag. I have never felt happier. I have never laughed so hard in my life. This is in not a complaint, I just think it's very funny that they replaced the Canadian flag with a Pride flag for no apparent reason. They have their priorities figured out.

“Women and non-binary people” stop. Do you mean people with marginalized genders? Do you mean gender-oppressed people? Then say that. Stop refusing to recognize the very much gendered oppression of other trans people. There’s not some chasm of difference between how our oppressors treat a very masc non-binary person and a more binary trans man. I’m also non-binary and very much oppressed for my gender but because I’m transmasculine I could never feel comfortable in a space that marketed itself like that. Tell me what the real harm is of letting gender-oppressed mascs into spaces discussing gender oppression is. Because the consequence of not doing so is denying them space for their experiences just because of their gender identity. Do better.
#‘’but 🥺 we don’t want men in our spaces 🥺’’ why. these men are oppressed for their gender identity & expression.#‘’well some people have trauma around men’’ some people have trauma around women too. should we keep them out of queer spaces#‘’their appearance might make someone uncomfortable’’ are you also keeping out cis women butches and trans women who aren’t hyper femme#because if so your space has serious problems and you are the one making gender-oppressed people uncomfortable#so many trans women are wary of these spaces because they police perceived masculinity. so how abt stop doing that#transandrophobia#intracommunity issues tag#mine

Y'know what? Fuck it. I am a dude. I am sapphic. I love girls in a very gay way. I love boys in a very gay way. I am a guy, but not a man. A use he/him but I am not a man. I don't use she/her but I am sapphic. I have a complicated relationship with a lot of parts of my identity, and that will not change overnight, but right now what is important is that I am amazing.
I am queer and beautiful and in love. I use labels I want and reject ones I don't.

I actually don't think that the high percentage of autistic people who are trans/nonbinary has anything to do with how autistic brains work, and I think insisting that it does is a dangerous path to go down.
Rather, I think it has a lot more to do with the fact that people who are already othered in some way are more likely to question aspects of themselves and their identities than people who aren't othered.
Autistic people, and really, all neurodivergent people, are already the Other. Whether diagnosed or not, autistic people already feel different and already wonder why they're different. You can say the same about any Othered demographic. A cishet, white, able-bodied person in the US is less likely to question deeply how they feel because being of the normative class, they just assume others feel the exact same way as them (even if it's not the case).
Think about how many seemingly cishet people say things that make us as non-cishet folks tilt our head a bit, when they say things like "everyone is a little bi, doesn't mean you're gay" or "everyone's felt like a different gender, doesn't mean you're trans", because obviously not everyone actually feels that way and maybe these people could benefit from a bit more introspection, but they never considered it because they assumed everyone felt that way because everything else about their identity- whiteness, abledness, income- is considered The Norm.
So, an autistic person who already has felt different and othered their whole life, who has already been constantly questioning themself, is more likely to also question their sexuality and/or gender identity because they don't really have anything to lose and are already questioning anyway. Meanwhile, a neurotypical person with the same unaddressed feelings about their gender and/or sexuality is more likely not to address those feelings because they either think they're unremarkable or because they fear the repercussions of suddenly Not Being The Norm.
It's not that autistic brains are more wired to not be cishet, it's that autistic people, by being the Other, are just going to be more open to questioning their identity because their identity is already in question by everyone around them.

Happy Pride! Now that Lunar Boy (our middle grade graphic novel) is out, we wanted to share our thought process behind queer vocabulary in media. The constant censorship, imposed western biases on queer culture, and what it means to introduce queer vocabulary to a young audience.
Check out Lunar Boy wherever american graphic novels are sold, or check it out at a library!
#pride month#pride#queer#trans#lgbt books#qpoc#queer books#lunar boy#graphic novel#my art#longish post#just in case it needs to be said: of course it's okay not to identify with “queer” for any personal reason! but in talking about media rep#it's important to discuss the potential biases that could be imposed if we reject queer vocab all together#and the limitations the lgbtqia acronym has in encompassing identities outside of a western framework
