Botanical Ingredients Market: Key Trends and Growth Drivers
The global botanical ingredients market size is expected to reach USD 281.41 billion by 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc., expanding at a CAGR of 6.9% over the forecast period. The market is expected to be driven by the increasing demand for convenience and functional food products coupled with the advent of clean and natural botanical supplements by key market participants. The food and beverages industry has been one of the biggest application areas for botanical ingredients. They are widely used in various foods & beverages, such as bakery & dairy products, energy drinks, and confectionery products, owing to their unique flavor and health benefits.
Health-conscious consumers prefer food products with high nutritive content. The COVID-19 pandemic has also shifted customer focus towards preventive healthcare with an emphasis on natural and clean products. Thus, food & beverage manufacturers are focusing on fortifying food products with flavorful and nutritive plant-based ingredients, such as tea extracts. Botanical ingredients are sourced from herbs, leaves, spices, flowers, etc. Spices accounted for the highest revenue share in 2022. The increasing trend of experiencing novel food, high usage as a natural ingredient in cosmetic products, and increasing awareness about health benefits associated with it are major factors contributing to the high market share of the spices segment.
The rising demand for health-beneficial products and the introduction of novel food products by processed food companies to expand their product range and differentiate from competitors are factors expected to boost the market growth. The powder form segment accounted for the largest share in 2022. This is due to its high amounts of active ingredients, longer shelf life compared to liquid form, and extensive utilization in various applications, such as bakery, confectionery, sauces, dressings, meat, soy, dairy, dietary supplements, and medicines. Moreover, the powder form is less likely to be contaminated owing to its concentrated nature. Asia Pacific has been experiencing high growth over the past few years.

Buck Moon - July 20-21, 2024
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/97b8fb6f661a73bd87d192d6728e6690/92e28f80caf58dca-6f/s540x810/ce1c6d50e9b0e12b9e55ed050eca273c3a9e0c7d.jpg)
Put on your flower crowns and your walking shoes - it’s time for the Buck Moon!
Buck Moon 🦌
The Buck Moon is the name given to the full moon in the month of July and is called this because at this time of year, the rack of antlers previously shed by male deer are beginning to regrow and harden in preparation for the fall rutting season.
Other North American Indigenous names for this moon include Salmon Moon (Tlingit), Berry Moon (Anishinaabe), Month of the Ripe Corn Moon (Cherokee), and Raspberry Moon (Algonquin, Ojibwe). The West Abenaki also call this the Thunder Moon in reference to the often-stormy summer weather. (This one is my personal favorite and the name appears in lunar calendars just as often as the Buck Moon.)
European names for the July moon include Hay Moon and Wort Moon, and it should be noted that the name Stag Moon does appear in some European sources as well.
This year's Buck Moon will be at peak illumination at 6:17am EST on July 21st, so the moon will appear to be full on both the 20th and 21st. Also, it's a weekend, so plan your festivities accordingly!
What Does It Mean For Witches? 🦌
The July full moon continues June’s template of planning for the future, this time with a focus on your passions and ambitions. Reflect on what you’ve accomplished so far this year and plan your next step.
Dream big and plan big, but don’t give in to reckless urgency. Summer (and capitalist grind culture) gives us the urge to Go Go Go. Despite all this, it’s important to take time to rest and recharge, lest we find ourselves burning out and losing our motivation.
What Witchy Things Can We Do? 🦌
Celebrate your victories and revel in the abundance of the summer season. If you’re inclined to do so, take a page from the deer and do a bit of prancing around a bonfire or your favorite flower arbor with some festive flowery headgear.
Go exploring! Find a local park or garden and take a stroll among the greenery, or use TV and the internet to explore and learn about faraway places. This is another opportune time to go and check out pick-your-own farms and farmers markets as well. Sharpen your foraging and plant identification skills while you’re out and about!
If you’re tending a garden, harvest some herbs and investigate what you can make with them. Whether it’s seasoning for meals, homemade botanical products, or just helpful spell ingredients, many herbs and flowers have a plethora of uses. As an exercise, select three plants growing in your yard or garden, research their magical correspondences and botanical properties, and try to think of as many ways as possible to use each one for witchcraft and for practical purposes. For extra credit, pick something native to your area that doesn't appear in the western magical canon and use its' physical, folkloric, and historical associations to create something new!
(Safety Note: Always clean and prepare home-harvested herbs properly before using them for kitchen, bath, or medical preparations. Always be sure to properly identify any wildcrafted or foraged plants. Always consult a doctor before trying an herbal treatment and take all allergies, medications, and pre-existing conditions into account. Please also note that while herbal treatments can be helpful, it can have negative interactions and side effects just like any other medication, and it is not meant to be a replacement for modern medical care.)
Apart from the usual full-moon festivities, I’ve always found this is an excellent time for weather-witching. Summer weather is notoriously fickle, but it is also highly malleable - one recalls that old American Southern epithet of, “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes.”
If you’re hoping to bring some rain to water your garden or break the back of a heat wave, this may be the time to do it. My personal favorite folk magic ritual for rain-calling involves going outside with a broom and a bucket of water, using the broom to scatter drops of water over your yard, and shouting up to the clouds, “SEE? IT’S NOT HARD!”
Make sure you take local weather patterns into account and try to draw on existing fronts and nearby precipitation to get the desired result. And keep in mind that with weather magic, less is more and one casting is enough. Asking for too much or asking too often can produce undesirable results. And if you manage to make it rain, be sure to collect some for moon water!
If you’re interested in weather-witching, I highly recommend checking out this masterpost by @stormbornwitch for a number of excellent articles and suggestions.
Happy Buck Moon, witches! 🌕🦌

I've been dreaming of the Plotting Serpent.
A Sorcerer in the Sands seeks something far bigger than himself. Freedom, sweet freedom.
How does a moment last forever? How can a story never die?
Bundled up in several layers, Jamil makes his way down a twisting path and into an open market.
The ground crunches softly under his boots. His breath is chilled, turning into a fleeting fog as he exhales. He retreats to the comfort and safety that his bulky coat provides, watching bales of white lazily drift down around him.
Snow instead of sand—imagine that.
The market operates straight out of the town square. From a vantage point--his temporary housing upon a hill--he can see the entirety of it, all the stalls forming a circle. The market is, by no means, large—but it has the spirit of something grander. The banter, the bartering.
Not so different from the bazaars at home.
Jamil ducks in, taking his time to pace around to each vendor. He’s agile and bright, like a child first viewing the moon and rushing to catch it in his palms.
Most sellers—and most customers—are elderly, gnarled like the roots of a tree. The cold colors their rounded cheeks the same red as many of the apples on display.
There’s pink and yellow and green too, and other fresh produce. The majority of it, he is told, is grown in Harveston. Others are foraged from Mt. Moln—nuts, plants, berries, and mushrooms.
Other stalls offer already manufactured goods. Scarves and gloves to protect against the winter, steaming apple drinks and sweetly spiced snacks, toiletries lovingly handcrafted with botanical oils.
His eyes light up with interest. He stops to inspect a row of shampoo and conditioner bars.
Feel free to touch and smell! says a sign at the stall.
He does, testing the weight of a bar in his hand. It is light and has an easy slip to it, and gives off the faint aroma of apples. Slightly tart and juicy.
It'll be good to have on hand, especially when it weighs less than liquid variants. The sign says these bars are made with apple seed oil, an ingredient that treats split ends and dryness while restoring a shine...
He absentmindedly feels the ends of his hair. The locks are normally dark and glossy, but the cold has not treated them well, leaving them slightly dry and brittle.
That's the cost of travel. It can be difficult to predict how my skin and hair react to different climates.
“Excuse me,” Jamil calls out to the stall owner, “I’d like to buy one of these shampoo bars, please. One in the conditioner bars as well."
“Sure thing!!” The owner wraps up the bars and slides them over. As Jamil hands him a few bills, he pipes up. “Say, yer not from ‘round here, are ya, sonny?”
“Yes. I am but a traveler.”
“Traveler!” The owner’s eyebrows shoot up. “Real fancy livin’ ya must have."
“No, not at all. I try to live humbly and travel light.” Jamil indicates his backpack, the one piece of luggage that follows him wherever he goes.
"That so? Not many young folk visit these parts." The owner strokes his rounded chin in contemplation. "I figured ya must be on yer way to the city. A lot more for youngins to see 'n do there."
“I beg to differ. The village has shown me incredible hospitality during my stay. Delicious foods, friendliness... I can enjoy Harveston's natural sights without worry. I'm content with just that."
With each word that leaves his lips, he feels the weight that has been on his shoulders lifting.
Jamil, you're free, the wind seems to whisper. The realization is intoxicatingly sweet and crisp, the first bite taken from a forbidden fruit.
"Aww, that warms mah heart ta hear ya say," the owner beams. "Yer a good kid, yer parents would be proud of ya."
"My... parents?" Jamil falters at the mention of them.
His parents are back home. His sister, too. Najma had texted not long ago, pestering him about bringing her a souvenir and asking when he’d be back.
His family is waiting for him. And... who else is there?
Jamil's brows furrow. Suddenly, he feels as though someone should be beside him, and he, trailing after them. A hopeless person buying up all the stalls, shoveling new dish after new dish at him.
"Here, try this, Jamil! Oooh, and this! That looks super tasty, have some too! And this cracker!"
"Where did you get all this food from?! There's no way we'll be able to feasibly finish this before it goes bad. Why do you never listen to me, Ka..."
A growl rips from his stomach. Jamil's eyes widen, and his face heats.
The stall owner's laugh cuts through his confusion. "Gahahah! Ya hungry there, son? Here, lemme grab ya somethin' on the house."
"Oh no, sir, I can't accept that."
"I insist!! Won't be long 'fore ya mosey on outta here and move on ta the next place. Eat yer fill while yer here, there ain't nothin' like a homegrown Harveston meal or snack anywhere else in Twisted Wonderland!"
The owner rustles with utensils behind the stall, He fills a container with a generous slice of pie--oozing with apple filling--and fluffy pancakes, plus a few potstickers. Then he pours hot tea, apple cubes bobbing in the spiced brown liquid, into a paper cup.
Jamil gets a whiff of it from where he stands and--against his better judgment, his mouth waters. When the owner hands him the container, cup, and a wooden fork, he doesn't refuse them.
"Remember us ‘n all the fun times ya spent here."
"Thank you, sir." Jamil bows his head. "I will. I'll never forget your kindness."
"Don't 'cha mention it. Go on 'n git now, ya got plenty more of the village to visit!""
Jamil departs with his purchase and his gifts, which he immediately settles into.
Lifting the paper cup to his lips, he sips his tea. It's deep and tangy from the cinnamon and apples it has been brewed with. He pleasantly warms from head to toe.
It isn't long before he downs the rest of the drink, apple cubes and all. They're not fresh, but dried--so when his teeth slices them into halves, they're springy and chewy, with a strong flavor.
Jamil lowers the cup, dragging out a satisfied sigh.
It's then that he realizes he's walking directly into a black wall. He veers sharply to the right, but still brushes his arm against that of the incoming person.
“Pardon me. I wasn't watching where I was going...” Jamil looks back, but is startled to find no one where his shoulder has made contact.
Hm? Was I imagining things?
Jamil glances around the marketplace. The crowd is too sparse for him to miss anyone. There are grandmothers and grandfathers, mothers and fathers, each dressed in thick coats and boots, some wrapped in scarves and others sporting fuzzy hats or earmuffs.
But no one is wearing all black.
He shakes his head.
It was probably nothing then.
Jamil returns to browsing the square, his every stride as light as a feather. He feels as though he is dancing atop the snow.
The cold no longer bothers him.
The wind, carrying a new message that resonates with his heart. It seems stronger now, rumbling like a deadly avalanche.
"Be free, Viper. Be free."

"The scribes of the Middle Ages wrote predominantly in iron gall ink, the product of an elegant four-ingredient recipe. Certain wasps implant their eggs in the leaves and smaller branches of oak trees. This process produces in the tree a gall: a lump of tannin-rich material in which the larvae grow. When ground and boiled in water with a sprinkle of iron sulfate and some gum of arabic, the mixture of insect and vegetable chemicals in the gall with the mineral of the iron forms a pigment stable enough to carry around in a little flagon and acid enough to stain parchment for a few millennia. "It’s not hard to find the ingredients, as long as you know what to look for. To learn about oak gall, an aspiring European ink maker would consult a botanical guide called a herbal. Just as useful to a nun in her walled herb garden, a commercial pharmacist, and a parent in a medical emergency, the herbal was in high demand but, until the advent of the printing press, expensive to produce. Publishers in the earliest years of mechanical printing activated this latent market, and herbals became one of the first popular printed nonfiction genres. These pre-Linnaean textbooks established graphic design protocols that have shaped the way curious minds learn and process plant science ever since."

Tell me I mean nothing
Lady Portia Featherington x Female Reader
Warning: This story is a product of my imagination. Please respect my creativity and do not copy, reproduce, or distribute this work without my permission. Thank you for your understanding and support!
Summary: When Miss Y/N Montgomery returns to the ton after a long absence, she is unprepared for the whirlwind of changes that await her. The unexpected reappearance of Lady Featherington stirs feelings she struggles to understand, leaving her heart in turmoil. Will she discover the true meaning of her feelings, or will confusion reign over her heart?
Chapter 2 : The Heart's Confusion
"It has been some time since the last ball—days, perhaps weeks or even months—since that fateful encounter with Lady Featherington.
I returned to my parents' estate after my mother mentioned she was struggling to gather the necessary ingredients for our perfume and scent business. While it wasn’t an urgent matter, I decided to come back to offer my assistance.
The family business is delicate and demands precision, for even the smallest delay in acquiring rare botanicals or essential oils can disrupt everything. My father has always taught me the importance of timeliness; a setback in any part of the process can affect production and our success in the market.
Gratitude washed over me as I realized how rare it was for a woman to be invited into the intricacies of the family business. The thought of my parents’ unwavering support filled me with a warmth that lingered long after I left the room.
Right now, I’m sitting by the window, admiring the garden. The yellow flowers look so lovely against the green, with other colors scattered about. The tranquility enveloped me, and I couldn't help but smile at the garden's splendor. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting playful shadows that danced across the ground, while the vibrant blooms seemed to sway in rhythm with the gentle breeze, a joyful reminder of nature’s artistry.
I smiled, recalling how vibrant the garden looked, particularly the leaves and flowers, which seemed to dance in the sunlight. It brought to mind Lady Featherington’s exquisite style.
“Y/N, you seem lost in thought,” my mother said from behind me. I chuckled softly. “Just admiring the garden, Mama,” I replied, turning to her with a soft smile. She stood beside me, her gaze lost in the lush greenery outside, the corners of her mouth lifting in appreciation as she took in the view. “Are you planning to stay with the Bridgertons for a while? Are you certain Lady Bridgerton is comfortable with that?”
“Yes, Mama, I’ll stay there for a while before returning home. Are you quite certain you won’t be going to the ton? I’m sure Lady Bridgerton misses you.”
“I won’t be going, perhaps soon when everything runs smoothly. Besides, I have plenty of perfume to make with the others, and your father is managing the financial matters. He sometimes lends a hand in other areas of the business.” She smiled and gently placed her hands on my shoulders. “You should enjoy your time there and socialize. You can invite the Bridgertons over when you visit us, but do let me know first, alright?” I nodded and smiled in agreement.
“I heard the new season has finally begun,” my father announced as he entered the living room. “A new season?” I inquired, realizing they were referring to the arrival of new debutantes. I remembered my decision to forgo the season to focus on studying literature, finances, and other subjects that interest me and will aid in our family business. I have no regrets about that choice.
"Yes, I believe it was last month, though I’m not entirely certain.” He laughed, and we exchanged smiles. “So, what time are you heading to the Bridgertons?” he asked. “Probably after breakfast” I replied. They both nodded in understanding. All of us head to the dining room to have our breakfast.
After that, they helped me load a few of my belongings into the carriage. I only brought a small amount, as I could always return whenever I wished.
“Be safe and enjoy yourself, alright? And do give my regards to Lady Bridgerton,” my mother said, and I nodded. “You too,” I replied to both of them before hopping into the carriage. As we set off, the journey to the Bridgertons began.
I arrived at the Bridgerton estate, and Benedict hurried over to help with some of the items from the carriage. “Welcome back! We’ve missed you already,” he exclaimed.
“Please, it hasn’t been that long. Did I miss something? How are you faring at the academy? Are you doing well?” I teased, and he laughed.
“The academy is splendid, and oh yes, you’ve missed quite a bit!” he chuckled. “My brother Anthony is now engaged to Miss Edwina Sharma”
“Wait, what?!” I gasped, the words tumbling out in disbelief as I fell into step beside him. His eyes sparkled with excitement. “Y/N! You won’t believe it! So much has happened—Anthony is engaged to be married next month! You have to meet the Sharmas—they’re delightful!
I release a light chuckle while following them towards the drawing room. “I’ll put these in Eloise’s room quickly,” Benedict added, and I nodded in gratitude as he hurried off. I followed Eloise into the drawing room.
“It’s wonderful that we’ll be staying together! We can discuss everything, especially Lady Whistledown,” she said, chattering excitedly as we entered the drawing room.
“Y/N!” Hyacinth exclaimed, wrapping her arms around my waist. “Hyacinth, it’s lovely to see you! Oh, Colin! You’re back!” I called out as he greeted me as well. I noticed Anthony preparing his attire nearby. “Nice to see you again, Y/N,” Lady Bridgerton said with a warm smile. I returned the gesture. “How have Lady and Lord Montgomery been?”
“They are well, my lady. They mentioned they would visit soon when everything runs smoothly,” I replied with a smile. “What else did I miss while I was away?”
“A great deal, I assure you! Anthony is to be married next month, as I suppose you already know,” Lady Bridgerton said with a smile, glancing at Eloise and Benedict, who exchanged teasing smiles in return. I couldn’t help but join in their mirth as she moved to stand beside Anthony.
"Congrats Anthony!" And the nod in acknowledgements "see how the cuffs are an inch too short" he said to the man who i assume his modiste.
I head for the refreshments just right near them as I listen to their conversations. Eloise is reading her book as well as gregory, and Hyacinth and colin eat their food as they talk about the upcoming wedding and for the future.
"and what about Miss Edwina's sister" Hyacinth ask "What about her?" Anthony asks back "Will she come to live with us, too?"
"Oh I do hope so. It will be a boon to have another intelligent woman in the house. and Y/N you should meet her soon Im sure you'll love her" Eloise said Happily "Another? Mm you're overcounting" Benedict said and I just chucles while I make myself a tea.
"Eloise, I shall need your help today. There is the dinner to plan with Lady Danbury to welcome the Sharmas into the Family and the the engagement ball next week---"
"I am sorry Mama, but uh I am attending a lecture this afternoon. Flower arranging something" Eloise said while going to the refreshements table where Benedict and I currently at, I looked at her curiously while smiling "Penelope's mama is forcing her to go and you've wanted me to find more ladylike pursuits" She added then looked at the both of us
"For how long have you cared about flower arranging" Benedict asked while smiling "Im an open minded woman an i care about many things" Eloise said and I chuckle while benedict smile widely at her as she eats her food
I decided to join Lady Bridgerton and Colin at the lake, where I knew Anthony would be with the Sharmas as well. Colin eventually parted ways with us, and I chose to remain with Lady Bridgerton. The atmosphere was lively, I look at the area, boats drifting lazily on the water, children laughing and playing on the grass, their carefree joy lifting my spirits.
As I followed Lady Bridgerton, my gaze swept the gathering, seeking a particular woman I had not laid eyes on in several weeks. How is she? I chose to admire the surrouding cause I am certain our paths will meet again.
“Lady Danbury, Miss Edwina, may I introduce you to Miss Y/N Montgomery?” Lady Bridgerton said, bringing me back from my thoughts with a warm smile as she made the introduction.
A pleasure to meet you, Lady Danburry and Miss Edwina Sharma,” I greeted them, receiving a warm smile in return. As I listened absently to their conversation about the upcoming wedding, I couldn’t help but notice Anthony, who seemed rather quiet, his gaze fixed on the lake. Feeling a desire to explore my surroundings, I decided to excuse myself.
Perhaps a stroll would provide a welcome distraction from the lively chatter, allowing me to take in the beauty of the day and gather my thoughts.
I began to admire the ducks as they paddled near the shore, and, finding a small piece of bread in my pocket, I tossed it to them. They were quite endearing, and I couldn’t help but smile at their antics. My gaze wandered once more across the lively scene, and suddenly, I caught sight of her—a vision in a bright green dress, her face lit with a radiant smile. Relief flooded through me, and I found myself smiling broadly.
The sudden rush of emotion urged me to walk toward her, but I halted halfway when I noticed she is in deep conversation with a gentleman from the group she had been standing with. They had moved aside, their expressions serious, and I stood frozen, unsure whether to approach or wait.
I hadn’t realized how long I had been standing there, caught in my own thoughts. Now that she was alone, I took a deep breath and seized the opportunity to approach her. “Lady Featherington, it’s a pleasure to see you here today,” I said, a broad smile spreading across my face as she jumped slightly at my sudden presence.
“Miss Montgomery,” she greeted, her tone composed, but a warmth radiated from her expression when our eyes met. Those blue eyes—so captivating, so easy to lose myself in—held my gaze for only a fleeting moment before she turned away. I followed her line of sight, noticing she was looking back at the gentleman from earlier. A small knot formed in my stomach, but I brushed it aside. Why did it bother me to see her with him?
“Mind if I ask who that gentleman was?” I inquired cautiously, trying to keep my tone light despite the strange tension I felt.
“It’s Lord Featherington,” she replied, her eyes still focused on him.
“Lord Featherington,” I repeated, clearing my throat as the name hung awkwardly in the air. Could that mean…?
“He was my late husband’s cousin,” she added, meeting my gaze directly, her expression steady but guarded.
“Oh, ohhhh,” I stammered, the heat rising to my cheeks. “I thought he was your husband—sorry,” I quickly added, casting my eyes briefly to the ground before looking back up at her, feeling a strange mix of embarrassment and relief.
“Oh, it’s quite all right,” she said with a smile. “Where have you been? It feels like weeks or months since we last saw each other,” she asked, her tone light and welcoming.
“I’ve been helping my family with our business,” I replied proudly. “Everything seems to be running smoothly now, so I thought it was time to return.” I noticed the way her smile lingered as she listened, and I couldn’t help but feel a flutter of something unnameable as I watched her.
“How about you, my Lady? How are you?” I asked.
“Oh, it’s been... eventful, to say the least,” she replied, a soft chuckle escaping her lips. “Between the arrangements for my daughters and the never-ending social obligations, it feels as though I’m always balancing one thing or another.”
She paused, her gaze drifting toward the lake, the sunlight dancing on the water’s surface. “You know how it is in our world. There are always demands to fulfill and expectations to meet. It can be overwhelming at times, but one learns to manage.” Her smile lingered, yet a flicker of weariness shadowed her eyes.
I stared into those beautiful eyes, feeling the weight they carried despite her strength. “Do you want to talk about it?” I asked softly, wanting to ease some of her burdens.
Portia’s expression shifted slightly, a guardedness creeping into her demeanor. “Oh, no need to trouble yourself,” she replied, her voice light, yet a flicker of hesitation shadowed her eyes. “Lord Featherington and I can manage.” Her smile was steady, but the tightness around her lips suggested a burden she was reluctant to share.
As she spoke, her gaze flickered back to Lord Featherington, who was engaged in conversation with a group nearby. “It’s just the usual….family matters,” she added, her smile not quite reaching her eyes.
I pressed on gently, “Are you sure? I’m here to listen if you need someone to talk to.”
Portia hesitated, her expression momentarily caught between relief and reluctance. “I appreciate that, truly,” she replied, her voice softer now. “But there are things that are best left unsaid, at least for the moment.”
“I can only imagine how demanding it must be,” I said with sincerity. “If you ever feel the need to share, know that I’m here for you.”
I offered a reassuring smile as I glanced at the lively crowd. Anthony and Edwina animatedly conversed with the guests on the boat, their laughter mingling with the gentle lapping of the water. Meanwhile, Lady Bridgerton animatedly engaged with Lady Danbury, her gestures painting the air with warmth and familiarity.
As I absorbed the joyful scene, my gaze fell upon a couple nearby. “Do you see that couple over there?” I asked, gesturing toward a gentleman presenting a lovely bouquet to a lady. Her gaze followed mine, landing on the striking display of red roses he offered.
“Roses often signify love,” I continued, letting the thought linger in the air. “But they represent more than mere romance. They can embody admiration, longing, and even a subtle strength. In the world of perfumery, it’s all about the hue of the petals and the richness of their scent.” I paused, my gaze meeting hers. “The deeper the color, the more profound the sentiment. Yet, it is the fragrance that lingers longest, wouldn’t you agree? It speaks when words fall short.”
With a soft smile gracing my lips, I said, “Maybe someday, if you allow me, I may take you to my hometown. There, I would show you how the fragrance of those flowers lingers far longer than words ever could.” My voice lowered as I looked into her eyes, hoping she might sense the sincerity of my invitation.
For a moment, time seemed to stretch as we held each other’s gaze, her captivating blue eyes reflecting a depth of emotion that drew me in. My heart raced as I let my gaze drift to her lips, the rich shade of red stirring something deep within me, a silent connection that felt both exhilarating and terrifying.
A loud splash echoed through the air, followed by a chorus of gasps and chuckles that pulled us from our shared moment. We both turned to see Anthony and a lord tumble into the lake, splashing water everywhere. I couldn’t help but chuckle, glancing at her just in time to catch her laughter joining mine.
“Well, I have a feeling Lady Bridgerton may need extra hands in helping Anthony,” I said, a playful smile on my lips. Despite wanting to linger in this delightful moment, I knew it was time to rejoin the group. “I’ll see you soon, hopefully.”
“Of course,” she replied, her voice soft yet filled with an unspoken promise. A brief pause lingered between us, and we exchanged a look that felt charged with unexpressed emotions. For just a moment, time seemed to stand still, allowing the weight of our shared laughter and the subtle connection between us to hang in the air.
“Take care, Miss Montgomery,” she added, her eyes holding mine a second longer before I turned to leave, feeling an undeniable tug in my chest. “Call me Y/N,” I replied with a smile, warmth flooding my cheeks.
As I walked away, the warmth of Portia’s gaze clung to my thoughts, momentarily pushing aside the weight of Lord's looming presence. I hoped our paths would cross again soon.
Turning slightly, I caught Portia watching me with a slight smile playing on her lips, and my heart skipped a beat. But as I continued walking, I felt a tug of reality as I spotted the Lord Featherington engaged in conversation with Colin.
With a deep breath, I steeled myself and headed toward Lady Bridgerton to help Anthony, attempting to push aside the unsettling feelings that stirred within me whenever I saw Him near Portia. What was it about that sight that felt so disquieting? I couldn’t quite place why it bothered me so much, but the thought of them together left a lingering unease in my chest.

Everyone who grew up with Saturday-morning cartoon television in the 1980s or 1990s is surely familiar with the universe of the Smurfs. During many years of adventures, however, the diet of the little blue creatures remained somewhat of a mystery.
The principal ingredient of many of their dishes was “Smurf berries,” which grew on bushes, but the indistinct appearance of the bushes gave few clues about their botanical nature. This was a deliberate move of the Smurfs’ creator, Belgian cartoonist Peyo (Pierre Culliford, 1928–1992). When the Smurfs were still only a European phenomenon, the Smurf berries were referred to by the French name salsepareille. Peyo chose this name for its exotic sound, initially being unaware that the name referred to very real plants. The name sarsaparilla or salsaparilla, as the plant is known in English, had been used for various species of the genus Smilax for centuries.
When the Smurfs became a phenomenon in the United States, the sarsaparilla shrub lost its berries, because many American viewers were thought to be familiar with sarsaparilla as a real plant. Smilax species are typically climbing vines (not Smurf shrubs) that can be woody, prickly, or both. They appear in tropical and subtropical areas around the world. The fact that an American audience might sooner recognize sarsaparilla than a European audience has everything to do with the plant’s history, which mainly revolves around Smilax species like S. aristolochiifolia and S. ornata, from Mexico and Central America. The best-known episodes from sarsaparilla’s history -- first as a medicine and later as a tonic drink -- are indeed about species from the New World.
The introduction of the Smurfs in the United States signified, in fact, sarsaparilla’s second Atlantic crossing. The oldest references to sarsaparilla are from Old World antiquity, where Smilax aspera was used as an antidote for poisons. The Roman medical writer Dioscorides (first century CE) devoted a chapter to this plant [...]. This description survived many centuries and became firmly embedded in the European medical tradition. [...] When European naturalists explored the plants of the New World in the sixteenth century, they tended to relate new species to better-known plants whenever they could. [...] Nicolás Monardes (1493–1588) described different kinds of American sarsaparilla in his work Historia medicinal de las cosas que se traen de nuestras Indias Occidentales (1565). His descriptions carried a commercial touch. For instance, he tried to convince his readers that the whitish sarsaparilla from Honduras was better than the black variety from Mexico. Similarly, he aimed to embed the new American kinds of sarsaparilla in the traditional framework of European medicine. [...]
The old name sarsaparilla began to be associated not only with new Smilax species from different geographical regions, but also with new diseases. American sarsaparilla was not used as an antidote in cases of poisoning by venomous animals, but to cure syphilis. Syphilis had swept Europe [...], and the market for syphilis remedies was booming. Yet a range of botanical substances had to compete with preparations that contained mercury. The most famous botanical antisyphilitics were of exotic origin: guaiacum wood, China root, sarsaparilla root, and sassafras wood. All these plant parts became staple drugs in European pharmacies [...].
---
Sarsaparilla [...] was also valued as a flavoring ingredient in medicinal tonic drinks, often along with sassafras. As such, sarsaparilla was to enjoy another wave of popularity in a later age. [...] As a medical commodity, sarsaparilla enjoyed great commercial success early on. Between 1568 and 1619 alone, 670 tons of sarsaparilla were imported in Seville, Spain, equivalent to some 7.5 million doses. [...]
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the borders between medicinal and other uses of sarsaparilla blurred. Proprietary remedies with sarsaparilla abounded, with the Ayer and Hood companies from Lowell, Massachusetts, turning the production of sarsaparilla into big business. In advertisements, it was usually promoted as a tonic, to purify the blood, and to create appetite. Because it was of American origin, it was supposedly especially suitable for American patients.
By this time, then, sarsaparilla had lost many of the Old World medical and cultural connotations [...]. The divide became so pronounced that European fans of the Smurfs in the twentieth century were no longer expected to recognize the name of a plant that had been a mainstay of pharmaceutical practice there for centuries, while the name sarsaparilla lived on as a soft drink in the United States.

"Nagano Tonic: A Refreshing Fusion of Nature, Wellness, and Flavor"
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c1604abd3a7e9d4b7bf7a79765f454e3/c78087fdacf2d877-bf/s540x810/c3d80923ba9aa2e899bd108fb62a9030f11f316d.jpg)
Nagano Tonic is a refreshing beverage that has captured the attention of many health enthusiasts and beverage lovers. Originating from Nagano Prefecture in Japan, this tonic offers more than just a delicious flavor—its roots are deeply tied to the natural beauty and resources of the region, as well as its cultural emphasis on wellness.
The Essence of Nagano Prefecture
Nagano is a mountainous region in central Japan, known for its pristine landscapes, high-quality produce, and mineral-rich water sources. With its numerous hot springs (onsen), clean air, and fertile soil, Nagano has long been associated with health and longevity. The area's natural resources play a vital role in the creation of Nagano Tonic, which is made with ingredients sourced from this vibrant ecosystem.
Ingredients and Benefits
The drink is often made using a blend of Nagano’s local fruits, herbs, and minerals. A popular variant includes the use of apples, as the region is famous for its apple orchards. The tonic may also feature botanicals, such as yuzu, a citrus fruit that is celebrated in Japanese cuisine for its zesty flavor and high vitamin C content.
Nagano Tonic is typically infused with natural minerals, sourced from the region’s springs. These minerals can help improve hydration and rejuvenation, supporting overall health. Some formulations even boast ingredients like ginger, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, and green tea extracts, rich in antioxidants.
A Healthier Alternative
In recent years, there has been a surge in demand for healthier, non-alcoholic beverages. Nagano Tonic fits into this trend, offering an alternative to sugary sodas or overly processed drinks. The combination of natural fruits, herbs, and minerals makes Nagano Tonic not only refreshing but also nourishing for the body. It is often marketed as a wellness drink that aids in digestion, boosts the immune system, and promotes vitality.
A Sustainable Choice
As the world turns toward more sustainable consumption, Nagano Tonic aligns with eco-conscious practices. The ingredients used are often locally sourced, minimizing the carbon footprint associated with production. Additionally, many brands prioritize environmentally friendly packaging, further promoting sustainability.
The Rising Popularity
While Nagano Tonic was once a local specialty, it has increasingly found its way into international markets. With its fresh, vibrant taste and healthful properties, it appeals to a global audience seeking new and innovative beverages. Whether enjoyed on its own or as a mixer.

@thuganomxcs : ☽ — [sender] and [receiver] stroll through a farmer’s market
With the autumn festivals in full swing, there are plenty of markets to shop through. And Botan's always eager to go explore. She has her arm linked in his, doing her best not to drag him around. But it's exciting, seeing all the vendors. There are stands set up with local produce and home made goods, everything smells great. She knows Yusuke was hoping to get ingredients for dinner but Botan's a little less focused.
She suddenly stops, eyeing something off to the side. "Stay here, I'll be right back!" she says before scurrying off. She returns a few minutes later with a brown package and two cups. She hands one to Yusuke and opens the bag to reveal steaming dorayaki. "Tada! Fresh cider and chestnut dorayaki! It smells great, don't you think?"

Gillian Riley
Historian who mastered the complexities of Italian food culture for the mammoth Oxford Companion to Italian Food
In his review of The Oxford Companion to Italian Food for the Guardian in 2007, John Dickie advised that the author needed to be “brave, brilliant, learned and almost certainly a little unhinged”. The food historian and typographer Gillian Riley, who has died aged 90, fulfilled all these requirements when composing that very book. That a single person was able to master the labyrinthine complexities of Italian food culture, embracing history, literature, the visual arts, politics and an infinite quantity of processes, ingredients and recipes is remarkable. That it was done with humour, humanity and lashings of erudition was the needful icing to make it digestible.
Gillian’s career in food history occupied the second half of her life, although she was always a “greedy” girl, her family asserts, and ever a fine cook, but at the outset she was a book designer and typographer. It was through art history, more specifically the depiction of food and foodstuffs in paintings, that she first made her mark, by seeing the food on the canvas and then pursuing it back to the kitchen, market stall or botanic garden.
She made culinary sense of those 18th-century Spanish still-lifes, by Luis Meléndez for example, being more than random jumbles of store cupboard items; she chased with determination the appearance of New World foods in Renaissance European narrative paintings. These perceptions she then filled out with admirable commentary and recipes drawn from contemporary sources.
The translation and discussion of these sources, principally Italian, was another string to her bow. Her first published book, in 1989, was a translation of Giacomo Castelvetro’s Brief Account of the Fruit, Herbs and Vegetables of Italy (a work which existed only in manuscript), which Castelvetro, an Italian Protestant living in exile in England, dedicated to Lucy Countess of Bedford in about 1614, doubtless hoping for a secure berth after a lifetime of pillar to post.
Gillian went on to translate, and comment upon, the critical 15th-century Italian recipe book by Maestro Martino of Como. (It is a pity that this was available only on a CD-rom published by Octavo in the US in 2005.) Martino’s instructions were relied upon by Bartolomeo Platina, the humanist author of Europe’s first book on gastronomy, Of Virtuous Pleasure and Good Health, printed in 1474.
Building on this foundation of art studies and extensive reading of early Italian material – allied to fluency in the language and many years of travel and consumption in the country of her choice – Gillian embarked on the mammoth project of an Oxford Companion, largely written by herself.
The venture might also be called intrepid, for the intellectual elephant traps are as common as potholes on an English minor road, and any error liable to be excoriated by a battalion of scholars and suchlike. How could she misidentify pampetato for panpetato when describing the Ferrarese panforte? they asked. But the result is arresting: infused by a down-to-earth realism; eager to chase down the precise, yet impossibly confusing, topographies of Italian foods and recipes; anxious to involve her beloved painters and artists in the long history of cookery. It has much to satisfy every sort of reader – chef, cook, amateur and academic.
Gillian was the elder child of Major Riley and his wife Millicent (nee Lees). Her father was an artist turned teacher, the founding principal of Selby College of Art and Crafts in North Yorkshire and later an inspector of art and technical schools, while her mother was a textile artist. After Selby girls’ high school and Cheadle Hulme school in Manchester, Gillian went on to Girton College, Cambridge to study history.
While at Cambridge she got involved in the historicising Water Lane Press created by the bibliographer Pip Gaskell in an undercroft of King’s College using original Caslon type and an early iron press. There she met her lifelong partner James Mosley, who was to direct the typographical and printing library at St Bride’s, Fleet Street, for more than 40 years. They eventually married in 2000.
Gillian first worked as a designer and typographer at the publisher Thames & Hudson before taking on freelance design work, which kept her occupied until well into the 1980s. Her first book, the Castelvetro translation, was followed in quick succession by four short monographs on art and food published by Pomegranate Artbooks in California, and then a larger survey, A Feast for the Eyes, mixing masterpieces and recipes for the National Gallery, which appeared in 1997. Her work in this field was compressed into a single volume called Food in Art which came out in 2015.
Although Gillian was a welcome attendee and contributor to various conferences and symposia, her work in journalism was restricted to a highly entertaining cookery column in her local community newspaper, the Hackney Citizen, near her home in London. However, she managed, more than many, to bridge two worlds.
She is survived by her husband, and by her sister, Joanna.

Buck Moon - July 3, 2023
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d49f49a37772bfc5fa5db85b6520b05b/8fe060966bb662dc-30/s540x810/ae790eb5c39d7da2f87c90f06261e69d3d3bfb9b.jpg)
Put on your flower crowns and your dancing shoes, it's time for the Buck Moon!
Buck Moon
The Buck Moon is the name given to the full moon in the month of July and is called this because at this time of year, the antlers on male deer are at the height of growth and impressiveness. This month also marks the first supermoon of the year!
Other European names for the July moon include Hay Moon and Wort Moon. North American Indigenous names for this moon include Salmon Moon (Tlingit), Berry Moon (Anishinaabe), Month of the Ripe Corn Moon (Cherokee), and Raspberry Moon (Algonquin, Ojibwe).
The West Abenaki also call this the Thunder Moon in reference to the often-stormy summer weather. (This one is my personal favorite and the name appears in lunar calendars just as often as the Buck Moon.)
What Does It Mean For Witches?
The July full moon continues June's template of planning for the future, this time with a focus on your passions and ambitions. Reflect on what you've accomplished so far this year and plan your next step.
Dream big and plan big, but don't give in to reckless urgency. Summer (and capitalist grind culture) gives us the urge to Go Go Go. Despite all this, it's important to take time to rest and recharge, lest we find ourselves burning out and losing our motivation.
What Witchy Things Can We Do?
Celebrate your victories and revel in the abundance of the summer season. If you're inclined to do so, take a page from the deer and do a bit of prancing around a bonfire or your favorite flower arbor with some festive flowery headgear.
Go exploring! Find a local park or garden and take a stroll among the greenery, or use TV and the internet to explore and learn about faraway places. This is another opportune time to go and check out pick-your-own farms and farmers markets as well. Sharpen your foraging and plant identification skills while you're out and about!
If you're tending a garden, harvest some herbs and investigate what you can make with them. Whether it's seasoning for meals, homemade botanical products, or just helpful spell ingredients, many herbs and flowers have a plethora of uses. As an exercise, select three plants growing in your garden, research their magical correspondences and botanical properties, and try to think of as many ways as possible to use each one for witchcraft and for practical purposes.
(Safety Note: Always clean and prepare home-harvested herbs properly before using them for kitchen, bath, or medical preparations. Always consult a doctor before trying an herbal treatment and take all allergies, medications, and pre-existing conditions into account. Please also note that while herbal treatments can be helpful, it can have negative interactions and side effects just like any other medication, and it is not meant to be a replacement for modern medical care.)
Apart from the usual full-moon festivities, I've always found this is an excellent time for weather-witching. Summer weather is notoriously fickle, but it is also highly malleable - one recalls that old American Southern epithet of, "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes."
If you're hoping to bring some rain to water your garden or break the back of a heat wave, this may be the time to do it. My personal favorite folk magic ritual for rain-calling involves going outside with a broom and a bucket of water, using the broom to scatter drops of water over your yard, and shouting up to the clouds, "SEE? IT'S NOT HARD!"
If you're interested in weather-witching, I highly recommend checking out this masterpost by @stormbornwitch for a number of excellent articles and suggestions.
Happy Buck Moon, witches! 🌕🦌

MOONLIGHT CHICKEN: UR THE... TOMATO SAUCE???
(above) Moonlight Chicken Ep.6 [4/4] 5.05
OK, so this post did a pretty pirouette and twirled its way back onto my dashboard once again after more than a month away. OP @vegasandhishedgehog had pointed out that the graphic text on Heart and Li Ming's t-shirts together seemed to be inexplicably telegraphing the cryptic message "Ur the... Tomato Sauce"... 🤔
This time around I couldn't help but look a bit more deeply into what it might mean, especially the intriguing "Tomato Sauce" on Li Ming's t-shirt. Based on what I've found, I think it is possible to read a bit of cheeky wordplay in the English words of this scene. 🤩 But first – a detour into linguistics and etymology is necessary.
There's a phenomenon that is sometimes seen in cross-cultural commerce – I don't know if it has a name, since I'm not trained in linguistics or anything of the sort – but whenever a hitherto unknown product or ingredient is introduced into a culture, locals will try to give it a name that resonates or sticks. And often that name will be along the lines of "this thing is the X country or foreign version of our more familiar local Y thing" (sorry for all the technical jargon here, hah! 😂).
You can see this in Southeast Asia: the Dutch may have been responsible for introducing many new food items to the Malay archipelago because a number of food items around the region are labeled "Dutch" even though they don't originate from the Netherlands.
The soursop fruit (originally from the tropical Americas and the Caribbean) is called durian belanda in Malay (meaning Dutch durian, because both fruits are spiky). In Malaysian Cantonese, potatoes are sometimes called ho laan syu (Holland tuber) and green beans ho laan dau (Holland beans), the latter echoing the way haricots verts are sometimes called French beans in English.
In Malay, turkeys are called ayam belanda (Dutch chicken), which nicely parallels the French word dinde – when turkeys were introduced to France, they were called (among other names) poulet d'Inde or chicken of India (possibly because India was seen as a source of exotic prized goods, or maybe because the birds, native to the Americas, were thought of as originating in the West Indies or les Indes occidentales). Poulet d'Inde eventually got shortened to just dinde though.
There's something similar going on with the tomato in Thailand. As its original homeland was the Americas, at some point in time it must have been a new and unnamed vegetable (botanically a fruit) when it first appeared in markets there.
So in Thai, tomatoes are called มะเขือเทศ (ma kheuua thaeht), and in keeping with the principle of adding some qualifier (that denotes external origins) to a local counterpart, the word เทศ (thaeht) means foreign or outlandish, while มะเขือ (ma kheuua) actually means EGGPLANT.
Thus the Thai word for tomato translates literally to foreign eggplant (or perhaps, outlandish eggplant).
For the text-savvy in this digital age (and that must surely include teens Heart and Li Ming), the eggplant emoji is laden with phallic innuendo (I'm not going into detail, but here's a visual 😂):
🍆
Remembering that in Thailand, Thai equivalents of weiner and wee-wee can sometimes be used as cutesy nicknames for boys (see this My School President write-up linked here, also Uncle Tong calling Junior กระจู๋ or gra juu in Bad Buddy Ep.11 [1I4] 10.38), it's possible to read the "Tomato" part of Li Ming's t-shirt – because of the outlandish eggplant reference – as a subjectively cute pet name along the same lines. Maybe the effect is meant to be something like: "You're a weird little weiner" (expressed with affection through Heart's loving eyes, mind you 💖).
Plus there's also the theme in Moonlight Chicken of young Li Ming growing into adulthood (despite Jim's constant efforts to infantilize him), while comfortably claiming his own sexuality in the process (and with Heart playing a pivotal role in this). Heart and Li Ming's t‑shirts pointing out the innuendo and imagery of the tomato/eggplant could also be a nod at that, with the outlandish definition of เทศ/thaeht suggesting that since Li Ming is gay, this eggplant/gra juu is not like most other ones (although he's not at all the exception in Moonlight Chicken! 😂).
Noting too that Li Ming is hyperfocused on escaping to the West, him being labeled Little Weiner of a Foreign Persuasion also does kind of fit. 😍
In this light, the word sauce just adds to the naughtiness of eggplant, while it also carries connotations of piquancy, sass and/or the essence or distillation of something.
And so the "Tomato Sauce" on Li Ming's t-shirt can possibly be read as symbolizing his indomitably feisty (gay) spirit, his faraway aspirations and his place in Heart's life as a cherished young boyfriend (worthy of a cutesy, if unspoken, pet name).
Am I over-analyzing again? Perhaps. But at the very least I think it's still a fun way of looking at Li Ming's t-shirt, and I wouldn't put it past Director Aof and screenwriter Best Kittisak Kongka to be playing with stuff like this. 🤩 They already did something similar with Li Ming's Sesame Street "Everything I Know I Learned On The Streets" t-shirt (see Ep.3 [4/4] 6.42), a metaphor for his uneasy juxtaposition at the amorphous line between childhood (represented by the kiddie vibes of Sesame Street) and incipient adulthood (as signaled by his streetwise self-confidence, gained independently perhaps from Jim). And there was also the wordplay around his "St. Rene" t-shirt (written up here).
Tagging @vegasandhishedgehog because you're the eagle-eyed OP who first noticed Heart and Li Ming's t-shirts, and as always @dribs-and-drabbles because you're foremost the one I think of whenever there's anything t-shirt related in BL! 😍
PS It's not the first time a vegetable was used as a metaphor for larger issues in Moonlight Chicken – see my write-up at the end of @airenyah's My School President Thai linguistics post that I reblogged here, for more info on Jim's winter melons in the market (although he was being decidedly less playful there! 😍). Li Ming also steals the scene away from Jim and his produce, once again displaying more adult maturity than his loong will give him credit for. 💖
