Po famózním přijetí filmu Šestý smysl, který se zařadil mezi 10 komerčně nejúspěšnějších filmů historie (vydělal 673 mil. USD), se přesně po roce vrací scénárista a režisér M. Night Shyamalan s novým thrillerem. Pojmenoval ho Unbreakable (doslova Nerozbitný), má opět jistou příchuť nadpřirozena, odehrává se zase ve Philadelphii a hlavní roli si opět přivlastnil Bruce Willis. My first ry at a movie review.

Can I take your daughter to prom?

So back in 2008 I was working at a video rental place (note to self: You just dated yourself) and we got two copies of this movie “Otis”. The smaller titles we got one or two copies but some of them were the best movies I have ever seen. “Otis” is one of them. It is good blend of dark comedy, serial killer horror, and revenge horror. The story is a classic tale of boy meets girl, boy likes girl, boy kidnaps girl and locks her in the basement. Ahh true love.

             Otis Broth (Bostin Christopher) is ready for his prom night. He has it all planed out. He has the classic baby blue tux in the closet, the Trans AM in the garage, and the girl chained in the basement. All Otis wants is to go to Prom. The only problem is that Kim (Tarah Paige) won’t play along any more. Kim doesn’t want to go to Prom with Otis and that just won’t do. Kim tries to do what anyone would do in this situation (will maybe not anyone) she tries to escape. But things don’t go well and she is accidentally electrocuted in the tub. What’s a serial killer to do? Well she is in the tub and Otis has a hacksaw handy. This is just the first 10 minutes. Otis still needs a Prom date, so he is back on the prowl.  And back to work delivering pizzas for 24 hour pizza.

             Enter the Lawson. Just a normal suburban family. Mr. Lawson (Daniel Stern) a construction foreman, Mrs. Lawson (Illeana Douglas) a nurse, Reed Lawson (Jared Kusnitz) a delinquent high schooler and is sister Riley Lawson (Ashley Johnson) their little princess. But when Otis delivers the pizza to the Lawson’s home and Riley pays for it she also becomes Otis’s next target. Next morning Otis shows up to grab her. When Reed gets home from school he finds out that his sister is missing. As the family is trying to figure out what the hell is going on they get the call form Otis. As respectfully as he can He asks for permission to take Kim out to Prom. The problem is that their daughter is Riley. Once the Lawsons realize that their daughter has been taken by the serial killer that has killed 5 girls in the last 6 months the Feds get involved. Enter Agent Ralph Hotchkiss (Jere Burns) the useless FBI profiler who is assigned to the case.

             As the days pass and Hotchkiss continues to piss the Lawsons off with his stupidity and narcissism Riley/Kim is playing along with Otis in the hopes that she will be able to live. Though out the whole time Otis has Riley he calls and taunts the Lawsons. Finally Mrs. Lawson snaps and yells ay Otis breaking his fantasy and endangering Riley. You are going to have to watch the movie to find out how it ends.

             This movie alternates between quirky and creepy and sometimes both at the same time. This was Bostin Christopher’s first feature film and he does a fantastic job as the slightly simple pizza delivery/serial killer. His seamless slide from his fantasy to the harsh reality and all the emotional pain he is in comes through. Ashley Johnson is known for many voice acting roles including the voice for Ellie from “The Last of Us” plays the little princess well but she is even better at the very reluctant hostage that has to act out Otis’s fantasy. All in all I really like this move for two main reasons, One: I actual got invested in the characters (except Hotchkiss) and Two: I love the weird movies the ones that are just a little off with that spike of comedy. I would recommend this movie anyone who likes the weird horror or dark comedy.
