Masterpost of playlists I've made. Arranging good songs or things with some shared nebulous personally meaningful quality into a new cohesive whole is a good thing.
bunch of tracks spanning classic early bossa nova up to 70s samba rock/funk/soul, possibly a few early 80s. appoaching 13 hrs all killer no filler
(what is balearic?) Balearic for me starts with trying to figure out the balearic section of the reviews pages in mixmag as a norwegian teenager in the late 90s. Not a genre, more of a feeling, and a history going back to the Balearic islands in the 80s. Anything with the right feeling could be balearic, but the evolution from early electronic dance/italo to newer house interacting with other types of mainly european music with a balearic feel is the concept here. Custom order.
This goes for the melodic vein found in late 60s to mid 70s giallo/genre Morricone soundtracks more often than not featuring Edda Dell'Orso singing. Morricone is legendary of course but somehow still feels underrated to me. Some compilations focus on this part of his music but this playlist does it better.
80s boogie mix. made for shuffling. playlist that had to be.
balearic virus. something going on with these songs. pop songs that don't pop. custom order.
Late 80s early 90s party rap music
Inner City Life by Goldie - the sound, the vibe and that point in time. The introduction of Goldie worldwide was pretty much "this is a new form of music". This playlist follows that train of thought for a little while.
Early 90's breakbeat rave. Think early Prodigy, Genaside II et.al. Too bad Spotify has so many holes with this kind of music.
short and sweet playlist with Tracey Thorn in various varied guises and collaborations.
Eurodance dominated the charts for a while in 90s Europe, where it was just "dance". Even if new manufactured "blonde female singer and black male rapper" duos seemingly popped up every other week from central Europe somewhere, the borders delineating it from more credible dance music weren't as rigid as it could seem.

examples of each category ↓ below ↓ IGNORE year discrepancies im basing it off of the year the artist originally recorded the song. ok
new orleans jazz: king oliver's creole jazz band - dippermouth blues (1923) (this is the original jazz style & is also referred to as "early jazz" although its still extremely popular among new orleans musicians. go to the french quarter and you WILL hear this style of music. this song features a young louis armstrong as seen in the photo)
foxtrot: eva taylor - if i could be with you (1927) (this subgenre was intended for couple dancing and was the most universally popular type of jazz during the jazz age)
swing/big band: duke ellington - take the "a" train (1939) (prevailing jazz style from the mid 1930s.. until the end of time)
bebop: thelonious monk - evidence (1948) (swing but make it crazayyyyyyy. not to brag but this song was based on a song my great grandfather composed..so..)
latin jazz: joão gilberto - desafinado (1959) (jazz w flavorings of one of the various latin music genres. this song is a bossa nova which is a brazilian style that uses samba elements. it later became popular to arrange bossa nova for big bands)
tito puente - el cayuco (1957) (this one is a mambo which is a style that originated from cuba & popularity spread among latino artists, this specific artist being puerto rican-american. posting a second example for this category because its so varied and also as propaganda bc its my favorite)
lounge/elevator/muzak: les baxter - pyramid of the sun (1960) (that chill 1960s film score type shit.. vibraphone my beloved)
jazz fusion: herbie hancock - chameleon (1973) (jazz with usual elements of funk, rock, and r&b. this song is categorized as jazz-funk specifically. WATCH OUT the preview starts loud)
smooth jazz: grover washington jr - in the name of love (1980) (chill r&b oriented jazz. makes me feel like im watching a sitcom intro)
acid jazz: the brand new heavies - never stop (1991) (acid jazz originated as essentially acid house + jazz. like jazz fusion, tends to contain elements of house, disco, funk, soul, and hiphop)
nu jazz: stereolab - fuses (1999) (another fusion genre but this one tends to have a more experimental electronic approach.. no one is surprised i shoved stereolab in here)
youtube
electroswing: tape five - tango for a spy (2006) (genre known for using jazz samples with modern dance music styles. electroswing is largely a misnomer for a lot of the music that falls under it bc a lot of it samples jazz that predates swing. but thats just my semantic thing)
youtube
#had to switch from spotify to youtube links bc you can only include up to 10 audio files in a single post lol#can you tell im an audio student ..#poll#Spotify#Youtube

#32: Booker T. & the M.G.'s - Green Onions (1962)
Genre(s): RnB, Soul, Funk, Rock
This one's a pretty big deal. It's one of the rare non-jazz/non-classical instrumental albums to really do well and cause some impact. This group was the outlet for original material from members of Stax's house band, the Mar-Keys. As such, these guys have played on an impossible to quantify number of classic records (session musicians typically went uncredited in those days, despite often being a driving creative force behind the music). The title track was a big hit, which is a tough thing to achieve as an instrumental group in the pop sphere. And more importantly, it's a real fun listen.
One thing that sets Green Onions apart from a lot of instrumental music for me is the amount of structure and restraint shown across the album. For the most part the songs are songs first, rather than beds for jamming or improvisation. And while there are plenty of great solos to go around, the album spends a fair amount of time in verse/chorus mode, with the organ typically taking over "vocals". The solos always feel well-placed, intentional, and more than anything else lyrical. In fact, the fluidity of the playing on this album almost makes you forget that some of these tunes ever had vocals in the first place and weren't originally just written to be instrumentals. I Got a Woman is a highlight (and arguably the best track on the record), as is their version of Twist and Shout.
My only real complaint about this album (and get used to hearing this as we drift further into the 60s) is that most tracks end in fade-outs. While this can be a valid songwriting strategy in rare situations, 99% of the time it's just lazy songwriting. Choosing how to end a song is one of the hardest parts about writing one, and fade-outs are the ultimate cop out of the task. "Yeah man, let's just jam at the end and let the engineer figure out when to cut it off" or "Yeah let's just repeat the chorus some more, idk" are both lame non-choices. It feels more excusable on instrumental albums, but I'm going to hold them to task here anyways. Sometimes it's a situation where the band simply has more material than will fit on a single record and a few minutes need to be chopped, but again, a more adept songwriter will be aware of this limitation and know how to work around it.
Frankly it's a minor gripe in this case, but it's a personal pet peeve of mine so I had to at least soapbox a bit about it. Anyways, aside from that this album is excellent, and furthermore a very unique listen compared to most other albums of this era. This is an easy Yes for me on the MUST-o-meter.
I listened to this in hi-res on Qobuz, like most albums I don't own. I passed up a very nice audiophile pressing of this a while back, probably should have grabbed it, but oh well I suppose. Also, if you want to hear an excellent modern iteration on this sound, I highly recommend the album Baked, Broiled & Fried by Cookin' on 3 Burners (mostly instrumental aside from one or two guest vocalists, also features a killer version of Feel Good Inc).
Next time, we're dipping into the beginnings of bossa nova with Jazz Samba by Charlie Byrd and Stan Getz!

Melodic Desires.
Within me resides an ardent desire, a yearning to don the cloak of a samba's maestro, a weaver of bossa nova tales. My guitar, it seems, was fashioned by fate's hand to breathe life into these rhythms. In the tender cadence and fervent verses of samba, I find my testament of love, a serenade dedicated to my cherished muse.
In moments of introspection, I craft verses akin to poetry, yet my ambition transcends the written word; I yearn to imbue them with melody, to birth samba, the anthem of my soul and my people. For in this pursuit, my aim is clear: to tenderly caress your heart, my beloved princess, with the very essence that enraptures mine into adoring you.
" A noite é linda, e ela mais ainda
Todinha de rosa
Mais linda, mais meiga
Que uma rosa."
It's my ode my little good princess, my Ade.

joao gilberto self titled 1961 (clear vinyl re-issue)
i love this cover art so much. its that green i think, very specific shade of that kelly green, looks so edible in real life. like im saying i wanna eat the fucking record. the photos do not do the cover art enough justice. its one of those things where you just want to to sit there in your bed and stare at it for hours. i have it sitting right in front of me purely for aesthetic purpose. of course i have the record playing but i couldve kept the cover and sleeve on my table where the record player is, nah, i just want it to sit there and look pretty. the album is amazing too (of course), composed by antonio carlos jobim, played by his orchestra, youd know him from some of the more popular samba stuff like his album "wave" from '67 and all that. hes a bossa nova hitmaker. acoustic guitar and vocals by gilberto himself, also beautiful. his voice is like if jesus christ was brazilian. and fuck these chords. so recognizably brazil, this album and others set the tone for european jazz moving forward. brilliant. wow. immense joy.
bought it at redscroll records in wallingford, where i usually get all my music from. go outside and go buy something, stay on ebay as little as possible, stay off amazon when you can. give yourself an experience. its good for the soul.

Brazil
The music of Brazil has developed some unique and original styles such as samba, bossa nova, choro and frevo alongside Brazilian versions of rock, pop, soul, hip-hop, rap and gospel. Instrumental music is also popular in Brazil especially jazz influenced forms. But there is also a long history of classical composers so today’s programme explores some of the composers who influenced and defined…

Antonio Carlos Jobim Stone Flower (Songbook) Quebra-pedra Tom Jobim Piano Vocal guitar Chords
Antonio Carlos Jobim Stone Flower (Songbook) Quebra-pedra Tom Jobim Piano Vocal guitar Chords
ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM (1970) - Stone Flower (Full Album)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lfHX8NBmXk Recorded in 1970 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in New Jersey under the production auspices of Creed Taylor, the arrangement and conducting skills of Deodato, and the engineering expertise of Van Gelder himself, Jobim's Stone Flower is Quite Simply One of his Most Quietly Stunning works —and certainly the high point of his time at Columbia. Nearly a decade after the paint peeled from the shine of BOSSA NOVA'S domination of both the pop and JAZZ Charts in the early '60s, Creed Taylor brought Jobim's tender hush of the bossa sound back into the limelight. With a band that included both Jobim and Deodato on guitars (Jobim also plays piano and sings in a couple of spots), Ron Carter on bass, João Palma on drums, Airto Moreira and Everaldo Ferreira on percussion, Urbie Green on trombone, Joe Farrell on soprano saxophone, and Harry Lookofsky laying down a soulful violin solo on the title track, Jobim created his own version of "Kind of Blue". The set opens with the low, simmering "Tereza My Love," with its hushed, elongated trombone lines and shifting acoustic guitars floating on the evening breeze. It begins intimate and ends with a closeness that is almost uncomfortably sensual, even for bossa nova. And then there are the slippery piano melodies Jobim lets roll off his fingers against a backdrop of gauzy strings and syncopated rhythms in both "Choro" and "Brazil." The latter is a samba tune with a sprightly tempo brought to the fore by Jobim's sandy, smoky vocal hovering ghost-like about the instrumental shimmer in the mix. Take, for instance, the title track with its stuttered, near imperceptible percussion laid under a Jobim piano melody of such simplicity, it's harmonically deceptive. It isn't until Lookofsky enters for his solo that you realize just how sophisticated and dense both rhythm and the chromatic lyricism are. The album closes with a reprise of "Brazil," restating a theme that has, surprisingly been touched upon in every track since the original inception, making most of the disc a suite that is a lush, sense-altering mediation, not only on Jobim's music and the portraits it paints, but ON the sounds employed by Taylor to achieve this effect. Stone Flower is simply brilliant, a velvety, late-night snapshot of Jobim at his pea * Stone Flower is the Fifth album by Antonio Carlos Jobim ("JOBIM"). Recorded in March, April, and May 1970 by Rudy Van Gelder at "Van Gelder Studios" and was produced by Creed Taylor. The album was released and published in 1970 by CTI Records. Track list: "Tereza my Love" - 0:00 "Children's Games" - 4:24 "Choro" - 7:55 "Brazil"(Ary Barroso) - 10:04 "Stone Flower" - 17:31 "Amparo" - 20:53 "Andorinha" - 24:35 "God and the Devil in the Land of the Sun" - 28:06 "Sabia" - 30:29 "Brazil" - 34:30 Read the full article
