'Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan's most ambitious movie to date, and it's unsurprisingly full of thought-provoking and cinematically ground-breaking moments. The new Nolan-directed movie follows J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), a physicist who led The Manhattan Project and became the father of the atomic bomb. Special IMAX lenses were developed for the movie (via Collider) and explosions were created practically, making the 2023 release one of the most spectacular theatrical events despite being a biopic where scientists mostly talk in small rooms.
Oppenheimer had a budget of $100 million, and not a single cent was wasted, as the film is full of never-achieved-before practical effects and a star-studded cast where multiple Academy Award winners are in single scenes. Not only that, but the 2023 movie marks multiple firsts for Nolan too. Oppenheimer also excels in areas where the filmmaker has struggled in the past, such as three-dimensional female characters. As a result, the movie has a strong 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and instantly became the Oscars front-runner. The best moments in the monumental three-hour movie range from the quiet emotional scenes to the most ear-deafening cinematic experiences ever.
10. Lewis Strauss Being Humbled By His Own Aide
Lewis Straus (Robert Downey Jr.) tried to drag Oppenheimer's name through the mud after being humiliated by the scientist. However, when Strauss reveals that he orchestrated Oppenheimer's hearing to the point where even he chose the special counsel, not even his Senate aide (Alden Ehrenreich) wants to back him. After Strauss was convinced that Oppenheimer and Einstein's conversation was about him, the aide satisfyingly tells Strauss that Einstein and Oppenheimer probably had no interest in the AEC chairman. The aide turned out to be right, and at the end of the movie, it was the first time that Strauss realized that his narcism had gotten the better of him.
9. Oppenheimer's Interrogation With Boris Pash
Casey Affleck has an incredible one-scene performance in Oppenheimer, as he plays Boris Nash, a United States Army intelligence officer. Pash is the one character who Oppenheimer seemed intimidated by. Oppenheimer chooses his words very carefully and never seems fazed by the U.S. Army officers at Los Alamos. However, Pash is the only U.S. army official who could make Oppenheimer sweat and stumble over his words under pressure, as the officer interrogated the scientist about his connection to the Communist Party. The moment is the most intense the movie gets outside the threat of nuclear warfare, and Affleck's unnerving and threatening performance is a career-first.
8. Oppenheimer's Meeting With President Harry S. Truman
Just like Affleck's role, Gary Oldman's role as Harry S. Truman is a one-scene, mic-drop performance. The moment in the Oval Office is riveting and unforgettable as Oldman plays the irrational U.S. President Truman. The character is another role the actor disappears into, as he's unrecognizable when he calls Oppenheimer a "crybaby." It isn't until a close-up of Truman looking almost directly into the camera that it becomes clear the character is played by Oldman. Even then, general audiences likely wouldn't have noticed. Both Oldman and Affleck are Academy Award winners, and if Oppenheimer wasn't so stacked with phenomenal performances, these one-scene roles would potentially be award-winning.
7. Oppenheimer Trying To Poison His Professor
Early in the movie when Oppenheimer is still a student, the scientist attempts to kill his professor by injecting cyanide into his apple. The sequence cleverly foreshadows the bold decisions Oppenheimer can quickly make but also how indecisive and conflicted he can be, as he ultimately stops the professor from eating the fruit. However, while this happened in real life, Oppenheimer changed the story for the better by making the event run parallel to Niels Bohr's (Kenneth Branagh) visit to the school. Bohr almost eating the apple before it's slapped out of his hand by Oppenheimer makes the historical moment one of the few alleviating sequences in the film.
6. Oppenheimer Meeting Leslie Groves For The First Time
Oppenheimer and Leslie Groves (Matt Damon) make a great unlikely comedy duo in Oppenheimer. The two are often hurling wisecracks in each other's direction, but every line of dialogue in their first scene together has classic-quote potential. The scientist and the United States Army Corps of Engineers officer are both experts in their respective fields, but between their big personalities and the dichotomy between their fields, Groves' introduction is so entertaining. Between Oppenheimer schooling Groves about Alfred Nobel inventing dynamite and Groves dissecting Oppenheimer's entire personality and life, they had immediate chemistry.
5. Oppenheimer's Post-Hiroshima & Nagasaki Speech
Christopher Nolan has never directed a horror movie, but based on the scene following the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, he'd undoubtedly make a distinguished movie in the genre. In the scene, Oppenheimer enters a small room where he gives a speech. Americans are victoriously stomping on the wooden floorboards. However, while giving the speech, Oppenheimer imagines victims of the bombings, and the sights are absolutely terrifying. The terror combined with Oppenheimer's guilt makes it Nolan's most harrowing movie moment ever. The scene is a masterclass in sound design too, as the applause begins ominously before it's revealed to be crowds of Americans cheering.
4. Kitty's Interview In The Oppenheimer Hearing
One of the few common criticisms of Christopher Nolan's movies is how badly written the female characters are. Whether it's The Dark Knight, Following, or Dunkirk, female characters are either villains, killed off, or don't even exist. However, Kitty Oppenheimer (Emily Blunt) is one of the strongest characters in Oppenheimer, and she has the best moment during Oppenheimer's entire hearing. Roger Robb (Jason Clarke) was ruthless when asking Kitty questions about her husband, attempting to manipulate Kitty into giving him the answers that he wanted to hear. Regardless, Kitty was ready for war, turned the tables on Robb, and left the special counsel speechless with her epic monologue.
3. Oppenheimer's Conversation With Einstein
The conversation between the two physicists and what Oppenheimer said to Einstein is the big mystery of Oppenheimer, and it's the very reason why Strauss is so paranoid. In the final scene of the movie, the conversation is finally revealed, and it ultimately sums up Oppenheimer's entire inner conflict. The father of the atomic bomb reveals to Einstein that he's worried that creating the weapon might have started a chain reaction. Oppenheimer might have beaten the Nazis to the atomic bomb, but he realizes that as a result, he sped up a nuclear arms race across the world, ending in a totally harrowing but necessary way.
2. The Entire World Igniting In Flames In The Oppenheimer Ending
At the very end of Oppenheimer, immediately following the conversation between Oppenheimer and Einstein, there's one final montage. The montage is a flash-forward to nuclear weapons being activated across the world, proving that The Manhattan Project really did start a chain reaction. Following that, the entire world is engulfed in flames, which is the very thing that Oppenheimer and the scientists had joked about an hour earlier. As visually stunning as the sequence is, the moment only reinstates how terrifying Oppenheimer's concerns are, and it also serves as something of a visual adaptation of Oppenheimer's most famous quote: "Now I become death, destroyer of worlds."
1. Oppenheimer's Trinity Test
While director Michael Bay is known for his explosions, Nolan shot a practical explosion for Oppenheimer that will remain unrivaled for the foreseeable future. There are even little moments within the showstopping Trinity Test sequence as the scientists prepare for the explosion, such as Edward Teller (Benny Safdie) lathering himself in sunscreen. The moment is another masterful example of sound design too. Nolan had conditioned audiences into waiting for the Trinity Test's sound with the previous explosions in Oppenheimer, but the filmmaker kept audiences waiting, and waiting, and waiting. When the noise finally happens, it's on a level that no viewer could possibly have been prepared for.'

But even then he could not convince Oppenheimer of the necessity of this disclosure.
Oppenheimer: I've thought about it a good deal because Pash and Groves both asked me for the name, and I feel that I should not give it. I don't mean that I don't hope that if he's still operating that you will find it. I devoutly do. But I would just bet dollars to doughnuts that he isn't still operating.
Lansdale: I don't see how you can have any hesitancy in disclosing the name of the man who has actually been engaged in an attempt at espionage to a foreign power in time of war. I mean, my mind just doesn't run along those channels, and—
Oppenheimer: I know, it's a tough problem, and I'm worried about it a lot.
Lansdale: I can understand personal loyalty, yet you say he's not a close friend of yours. May I ask, do you know him as a Communist?
Oppenheimer: I know him as a fellow traveller.

The Mosley Review: Oppenheimer
Tumblr media
There are many good biopics out there about famous artists, singers and politicians that follow the same formula of giving you their origins before they get to their greatest hits of achievements. We see their contributions to society and we get to see some of their downfalls to humanize them and then the moment they get lifted back up, the big finale performance happens and then credits. What makes a great biopic is the choice to not follow that same formula to a T. In this film, we follow the subject from the moment they discover their purpose and over all dream and we see it come to fruition, but the psychological and social impact of their actions is on full display and does not pull away with a happy ending. That is what this film does wonderfully and I enjoyed the many layers of political and social inner workings of a brilliant man whose mind was used for greatness to only become chastised for it. I never knew the full story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, just his incredible work in creating one of the most destructive weapons known to man. This film brilliantly delves deep into his mind and life in ways that are not really explored anymore visually and creatively. There were a few problems I had from the directors choice when it came to the audio balances in dialogue and score. Aside from that, the cast all deliver their a game and some did it with the least amount of screen time.
Tumblr media
Cillian Murphy is no slouch when it comes to delivering a very dense and layered performance and as J. Robert Oppenheimer, he does exactly that. He brings out the lofty arrogance to his belief structure as the world around him is taking sides and striving to pull as many people to the left or right. He had his own allegiance and he was quiet selfish in many aspects. I was glad to see the emotional and deep psychological turmoil he went through after seeing how his great invention was used. Its always the repercussions of doing something that effects the world that often gets over looked and I'm glad that detail was not missed here. Florence Pugh delivers a great and emotionally strained performance as his mistress Jean Tatlock. She perfectly portrayed a smart, determined woman that had a severe mental issue and I loved that she didn't shy away from it. Her dependence on Oppenheimer was depicted in a fascinating and unexpected way. I loved the juxtaposition of her dependence and Oppenheimer’s vulnerability in an explicit yet haunting scene. Emily Blunt was fantastic as his wife Kitty and I loved her strength. Even through all of his selfish and sometimes dismissive actions, she stuck by his side and actually was his emotional and psychological anchor. She has one of the best scenes in the film where she is being interrogated and it was a show stopping performance. Matt Damon commands the screen as Lt. General Leslie Groves. The chemistry between him and Murphy was outstanding and smart. I loved that the Groves and Oppenheimer quickly established the level of respect when it came to the rank system between each and it wasn't the constant fighting you'd expect. Josh Hartnett was fun and strong as Ernest Lawrence. I enjoyed the political and theoretical conversations between him and Oppenheimer as they shared the same passion for the project, but Lawrence saw the possible political ramifications. Casey Affleck was pretty chilling as Boris Pash. His scene with Oppenheimer alone made for a tense and uncomfortable game of word tennis as he tried to get Oppenheimer to reveal his contacts. Robert Downey Jr. delivers a stellar and bitter performance as Lewis Strauss. He portrayed Strauss as a fan that got to meet and work with his idol and yet felt shunned once he started launching into something spectacular without him. The bad blood between them comes to a head in a game of lies and truths and in the dangerous game of politics. It was fascinating to watch him work and is something I wouldn't mind examining more from a performance perspective.
Tumblr media
The score by Ludwig Göransson was fantastic, haunting and thrilling as the story takes off. He steps out of his more expected hip hop infused style and delivers something very different and shows his growth as a composer. From the haunting and star gazing themes that coincide with the sparkling visuals to the rhythmic and dramatic court drama of the latter half of the film, he delivers another memorable score. The visual style of Christopher Nolan is ever present in this film and his use of true IMAX film is never wasted. It was immersive and the majority of practical effects mixed with some visual effects were astounding and masterfully executed. My only problem and its seems to be a common thing with Nolan’s films in particular, is the lack of audio clarity during heavy dialogue. I don’t know if there was some seriously bad diction from the actors or the sound wasn’t balanced in my theater, but man the audio needed to cleaned up. Its especially troubling when the score or sound effects drown out people with thick accents. Writer and Director Christopher Nolan has masterfully made a film about man that not only changed the world, but also felt the weight of his decision and Nolan captures Cillian Murphy's brilliant portrayal of that emotional turmoil. This film will definitely be up for best picture come award season. I truly enjoyed this epic and it truly is a requirement to see it in IMAX as intended. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

'Oppenheimer is once again trending on social media, but this time it’s because it fails the Bechdel Test. Here’s how the record-breaking movie fails the Bechdel Test.
How Oppenheimer fails the Bechdel Test
Also known as the “Bechdel-Wallace Test,” “Bechdel Rule,” or “Mo Movie Measure,” the Bechdel Test assesses Oppenheimer on three parameters:
Whether there are at least two women in the film. Whether they talk to each other. Whether they talk about something besides a man.
In a movie like Oppenheimer that packs an all-star cast and an intricate narrative, one would think that it would pass such a simple test. But surprisingly, the thriller biopic fails the test in the last two parameters as it doesn’t have any scenes to tick those boxes.
Applying the Bechdel test on Oppenheimer delivers the following results:
Are there 2 or more women in the movie? Yes. Katherine Kitty Oppenheimer, Jean Tatlock, and more. Do Kitty Oppenheimer and Jean Tatlock or other women in the film talk to each other? No, not in any scene of significance. Does the movie have two women talking about anything besides a man? No.
And that’s how Oppenheimer fails the Bechdel Test.
Oppenheimer’s plot and cast
Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer follows the story of Robert J. Oppenheimer, whose unparalleled contributions to the Manhattan Project led to the creation of the Atomic Bomb. The film also dives deeper into its consequences and also showcases a conspiracy against the popular theoretical physicist.
It stars Cillian Murphy as the titular character. Others involved are Emily Blunt as Kitty Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as Leslie Groves, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock, Josh Hartnett as Ernest Lawrence, Casey Affleck as Boris Pash, Rami Malek as David Hill, and Kenneth Branagh as Niels Bohr...'

Accordingly, Lansdale immediately made for his weak spot.
Lansdale: Well, now, I want to say this – and without intent of flattery or complimenting or anything else – that you're probably the most intelligent man I ever met and I'm not sold on myself that I kid you sometimes, see? And I'll admit freely that at the time we had our discussion at Los Alamos I was not perfectly frank with you. My reasons for not being are immaterial now. Since your discussion with Colonel Pash I think that the only sensible thing is to be as frank with you as I can. I'm not going to mention certain names, but I think that you can give us an enormous amount of help, and as I talk you will realize, I think, some of the difficulties that have beset us.
Oppenheimer: There are some, I think, that I know already.
Lansdale: That's right. Now, I will say this, that we have not been, I might say, asleep at the switch, to a dangerous extent. We did miss some things, but we have known since February that several people were transmitting information about this project to the Soviet government.
Oppenheimer: I might say that I have not known that. I knew of this one attempt to obtain information which was earlier, or I don't, I can't remember the date, though I've tried.
Lansdale: Now, we have taken no action yet, except with respect to Lomanitz.
Oppenheimer: Are they people who would be in a position to transmit substantial information?
Lansdale: Yes, I'm so informed, I don't know personally, of course.
Oppenheimer: Well, Lomanitz by virtue of being a theoretical physicist would probably have a rather broad knowledge of the things he is working on.

Sam Bankman-Fried
[I don’t know if my thoughts about Sam Bankman-Fried ultimately amount to an exercise in casuistry or just to an honest consideration of the other side. But writing about this case led me to some interesting reflections on the nature of justice in modern human society, as well as to questions about the hidden, perhaps even taboo realities of our financial system.] I've been reading about the case of Sam Bankman-Fried and I've yet to see any definitive proof that he was guilty of willful intent to defraud. Everything about his profile confirms eccentricity, naïveté, ignorance of how the world actually works, negligence, worldly incompetence, and recklessness, yes. But even recklessness does not necessarily indicate an intent to defraud; it may merely be indicative of a person oblivious to the realities of the world and maybe even of a person almost unfathomably foolish - but a criminal actor with evil intent this makes not.
There have been many criminal actors with clear and willful intent to defraud, but they mostly took advantage of poor and middle class working people, so naturally they never saw the inside of a prison cell, and they probably never will. Sam Bankman-Fried didn’t swindle a bunch of poor people out of their hard-earned money; if he had, he wouldn’t be in prison right now. No, he just played a bit too fast and loose with a bunch of rich people’s money. Now, he didn’t intend to lose their money, and he certainly didn’t intend to steal their money, but he effectively did. He lost a bunch of rich people’s money. And that’s why he’s in jail right now. That was his real crime – let’s be real here.
But how could someone so sharp and capable also be so reckless and foolish at the same time? Surely he must have known what he was doing.
In the 2023 film Oppenheimer, Matt Damon's character General Leslie Groves often wonders how J. Robert Oppenheimer, someone so obviously brilliant otherwise, could be so oblivious to so many aspects of human society and everyday interpersonal relations. Casey Affleck and Robert Downey Jr's characters detect or suspect something more sinister in Oppenheimer, but they're actually just projecting these malignancies onto him from within their own corrupt and sadistic worldviews.
People wonder, "How could he be so stupid?" Whether it's Oppenheimer giving an interview to Boris Pash and openly divulging information that could make him the target of a DoD investigation, or Sam Bankman-Fried giving open interviews soon after the collapse of FTX and repeatedly incriminating himself with idiotic statements, people might say, "What a stupid Russian mole!" or "What a dumb financial criminal!" respectively, but could they actually be assuming, or worse, projecting criminal intent onto these individuals when there is none? After all, a person who continues to make self-incriminating statements to both the press and to the authorities, is this the mark of a criminal mastermind, or the sign of a hopeless fool? The US government wants us to believe that Sam Bankman-Fried is both, but I find this conflation to be incongruous.
There are two kinds of people who do not remain silent when they clearly probably should: foolish criminals and the even more foolish innocent. The US government has tried to portray this guy as some kind of an evil genius, some kind of a nefarious puppet master, but I just don't see it. I don't see a person who was operating in bad faith. I just see a person who was probably insulated from the everyday realities of the world his whole life, and who was almost unfathomably oblivious to those realities and their dangers. Clearly he ran his companies in an almost unbelievably idiotic and reckless fashion, but willful intent to defraud this makes not. Criminal negligence also carries penalties, but far less severe. I also find it interesting that Bankman-Fried was arrested in the Bahamas the day before he was scheduled to testify before the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services. A cynical person might conclude that they didn’t want him to testify. Well, why not? After all, it would save them the trouble of having to extradite him from the Bahamas, and unless he planned on pleading the fifth for every committee member’s question, his testimony could only work against him in a court of law.
I suppose an even more cynical person might conclude that the authorities did not want to give Bankman-Fried any opportunity to rebut or clarify any of his replacement’s (FTX bankruptcy CEO John J. Ray III) scathing indictments and accusations of him before the American public.
A still even more cynical person might notice the benefit that Bankman-Fried’s arrest in the Bahamas and subsequent extradition to the US would have for the prosecution’s case, as it might help to create the appearance of absconding and evading justice on the part of Bankman-Fried, while arresting him in the capital after his testimony to the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services would not… reinforce the desirable narrative. In fact, it might foil it completely.
Yes, a skeptical person might find it curious that Sam Bankman-Fried was not allowed to testify before the American public in an official capacity which would allow him to give detailed and extensive answers to every question, as well as to offer rebuttals and/or clarifications to any one of his replacement’s criticisms. Were they worried he might “muddy the waters” or “corrupt our minds”? So low is their estimation of the American public’s critical faculties and powers of discernment, that he could not be allowed to testify?
A discerning person might stop to consider that if the prosecution felt that Sam Bankman-Fried’s testimony before the American public might hurt their case, then maybe they didn’t have such a strong case to begin with! Or maybe his full testimony would have been detrimental to other interests, such as the law firms which oversaw FTX’s bankruptcy and raked in exorbitant fees, especially considering that Bankman-Fried would have been able to respond to his replacement’s criticisms on the spot, as well as answer any questions from the members of the House Committee – a House Committee whose opening statements did not indicate an honest intention to seek out the truth, whatever it may be, but rather projected a need to reinforce a specific narrative right from the get go – as if the truth had already been decided. FTX customers would have undoubtedly been interested to hear about the astronomical fees the law firms overseeing its bankruptcy were charging – drawing from funds which could have been used to recoup investors’ losses. Again, there was a narrative here that did not want to be disturbed.
I find the prosecution’s manipulation of appearances to be most cynical of all, what with the needless extradition of Bankman-Fried from the Bahamas (which no doubt must have cost taxpayers a good chunk of money) and the effective barring of Sam Bankman-Fried from testifying before the House Committee on Financial Services. And in cases like these, I always wonder, if the prosecution’s charge is truly so noble, so steadfast and true, then why resort to such scummy tactics? Why go to such great lengths to make things appear a certain way, when the truth is supposedly so self-evident?
A wise man once said, "In a closed society where everybody's guilty, the only crime is getting caught. In a world of thieves, the only final sin is stupidity."
I don't know if Sam Bankman-Fried's conviction is a testament to his actual guilt so much as to the tendency of conventional people to see guile and malice in the hearts and minds of those they cannot understand, or simply do not like.
It's understandable that when so much money is lost, people want to feel like "We found the one responsible! We found our man!" But the fact remains: if you're hit by a car in which the driver wasn't paying attention, you can't charge the driver with vehicular homicide in the first degree. You can charge him with involuntary manslaughter, yes, which can also carry heavy penalties, but you can't charge him with vehicular homicide in the first degree just because there's a public outcry for swift punishment and severe penalties. That's not justice.
And ultimately, going beyond even the legal implications, a car with an absent driver is almost the same as a car with no driver. Then who is to blame? People struggle to accept this ultimate reality, which is why it is not reflected or considered in our legal system.
The reality that at times there is no one driving our car, and likewise that we are often surrounded by driverless cars, this makes us profoundly uncomfortable. Yet this is probably closer to the truth; the idea that every single car always has its corresponding and accountable driver is simply more practical and appealing to us. It allows for a functioning society but it isn't necessarily rooted in truth.
We collectively accept this conventional conception not because it's true, but because it allows us to function. This is a nuance that I think most people ignore, or are not even aware of. Hence why so many people are possessed by an almost sadomasochistic zeal for crime and punishment, thinking that this is justice.
No, justice is much more delicate than that - a higher virtue which requires careful thought and honest deliberation. True justice should never be a means by which the collective can seek out its scapegoats and its sacrificial lambs, in order to project all its own sin and iniquity onto the blank slates of the gifted airheads, and exorcise its demons through the slaughter, torture, and bloodshed of those same empty vessels. The wicked are often so eager to get to Hades they kill every psychopomp on the way there! This is not justice; this is the blood ritual of a death cult.
True justice is restorative and rooted in community and goodwill; in other words, it is a thing foreign to the modern human being of the polis, and native still only to the numerous indigenous tribes scattered across the globe. It has become a thing foreign to us and twisted, perverted. Sadomasochistic. A poor substitute indeed... an unconvincing imitation.
But anyway, I digress...
In terms of the Sam Bankman-Fried case, which I must emphasize do not necessarily relate to the more general reflections on the nature of justice I just expounded on, the questions I'm left with are:
a) How much of this was the result of what some might call "hostile takeover" tactics on behalf of Binance, and would FTX have collapsed if not for all its customers trying to withdraw all their funds at once?
and
b) How many companies/institutions have had similar holes in their accounting that were never exposed because all their customers/constituents never tried to withdraw all their funds at once?

Award Season is among us. Our reviewer Actor, Producer and Journalist Alex von Roon can't wait to check out the contenders starting off with HBO' s "Succession". How do you like Alexander as "Ken" in the Hit Movie "Barbie"? Von Roon did work with the director before and enjoyed her performance in "Greenberg"
For "Bild am Sonntag" Alex also met SAG Award nominee Tony Shalhoub on set in his trailer. Some comments were very interesting. We wonder how Mr. Monk would deal with a pandemic such as Corona.
Below please find the complete list of nominations courtesy of SAGAFTRA. Which are your favorites? Comment below.
