Just a reminder that kennel cough season is again upon us. Today, at Benton's (acd mix, right) agility class the final student arrived and her dog came in and laid down in his crate and made a sound like he was choking slightly on a treat. I assumed he'd done that. Until the sound came again five seconds later, and again. And again.

"Is he choking on something?" asked the instructor after about 15 seconds of coughing.

"Oh, no. He's just started making this sound sometimes. I think it's because he's excited. It's kind of cute."

The dog makes a horking, horrible cough.

"He needs to go home and stay home for two weeks," says the instructor. "And he needs a vet."

She caught it in less than a minute. Within two minutes she was sanitizing the area around where that dog has been. It was impressive, but now Benton has been exposed to what's probably either kennel cough or canine flu or any of the other communicable coughing illnesses.

Tribble, the greyed brindle next to him, is 13 years old. She has dementia. Benton is her emotional support friend. She takes her emotional cues from him. Without him, she gets very upset and can't tolerate being out of our sight. So I can't quarantine him from her for weeks over a two minute, distanced exposure. But she's elderly and if she catches something from him, it will be hard on her body.

Please be careful. Check if your dog needs an updated bordatella vaccine. Don't share water or treats. Wash your hands after handling other people's dogs. Ask your instructors at classes to do an email blast about the symptoms of canine respiratory illness and ask people to stay home. Avoid daycare playgroups if you can.

So while the world is on fire (and I’m restricting my doomscrolling), I did get good news that this Sassy, Opinionated Dogmonster is currently negative for Blastomycosis. That means we finish this round of meds and it’s a “sit and wait” for the next 3-5 months to see if he has a relapse (can happen) or if we are done done.

Or he may be prone to it and pick it up again, he’s a typical spaniel after all.

(Magnus is an English Springer / Clumber Spaniel mix. He has traits of both breeds and is an absolute menace in the best possible way.)

rizzo got. 3 shots at the vet today and then got into the fridge and ate almost a whole ziplock gallon bag of bone-in fried chicken which means im playing a fun game called “is he acting like this bc of the sedatives, the shots, or does he have a perforated bowel?” bonus: he’s not letting me touch him bc hes tired and sore and probably scared bc we had to manhandle him a little at the bet bc he was NOT happy about the shots or the exam

I'm so curious, because at this point I'm 65% sure this is something that has transferred to me zoonotically. this is because:

I've had a recurring throat/sinus infection that goes away when I'm on antibiotics, and then comes back once my dosage is finished

all the cats have (one by one) fallen ill to to an upper respiratory infection that leaves them with sensitive-to-the-touch throats and sinus problems

their URIs cleared up almost immediately on antibiotics

once all three cats were on antibiotics, my sore throat went away (despite it having been a persistent problem for 62 days)

I know there are strep and bordatella bacteria that can hop between cats and humans and cause mischief (example here), so it's not too far a stretch. maybe the mystery will be solved tomorrow!

good news for anyone wondering about mordred!! he may not have asthma, his swab test came back positive for bordatella so im picking up some beefy medicine for him this morning and if it clears up completely then hes golden!! if hes still a lil wheezy but mostly better then theyll try some asthma meds as well just in case hes got a double whammy going rn but !!! he might be feeling better soon if its just the bordatella !! im so excited for him to feel like himself again

Antivaxxers are not responsible* for the current pertussis outbreak. In fact, rich countries are! Here's how:

Whooping Cough, also called pertussis is back in a big way in the US right now. Other nations are also seeing outbreaks, particularly 'rich' or 'first world' or 'developed' nations. Wait what? Rich countries are having a bigger increase in whooping cough than countries with limited healthcare infrastructure? You're probably thinking 'ah, it's the antivaxxers, isn't it?' While they're contributing to the problem, but no, they're not in fact THE PROBLEM. In fact, even fully vaccinated people in rich countries are at risk for pertussis. The first thing to understand is that there are two 'generations' of pertussis vaccine available at present. Both are given in combination with tetanus and diphtheria vaccines. As far as I know, tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis are given together in every mainstream formulation of pertussis vaccine globally. The OG (first gen) pertussis vaccine was the DTP vaccine which contains a whole cell inactivated pertussis bacteria so when it is given, the body develops a robust immune response to every antigen (the thing your body can learn to make antibodies to recognise) on the surface of the pertussis bacteria. It is still used in countries where money is tight because it's cheaper to make and the immune response is robust and long-lasting--5-10 years depending on your source. Unfortunately, side effects were higher with the OG. Some children spike high fevers causing febrile seizures (which are terrifying even though they're benign), arm pain is more intense, and people feel worse after getting it. A miniscule number of children given the OG suffer encephalitis and more serious neurological effects, though most cases self-resolve. In rich countries, as the incidence of pertussis (and diphtheria and tetanus) fell with robust vaccination programs, people became more and more afraid of the side effects of the DTP vaccine. Those side effects sound scarier when there's lower risk of pertussis. There were also ever-growing antivaccine movements because since there has been inoculation (a precursor medical practice to vaccination that goes back all the way to ancient China) there have been opponents inoculation and vaccination. Antivaxxers are not new and modern. They have always been there and they were PISSED about the encephalitis. So both antivaxxers and provaxxers who were starting to forget how scary it is to watch a baby with pertussis said 'we need a better option'. This brings us to 2nd gen vaccines, the acellular pertussis vaccines DTaP and Tdap. The little a stands for 'acellular', meaning that there is no longer a whole dead bacteria cell as our antigen. We use specific cut-up antigens instead. Most formulations use 3-5 different antigens. This results in much lower side effects! Immunity without side effects is the goal! The problem is that this vaccine doesn't last as long. In fact, for 0-10 year old children, 98% are immune at 1 year after vaccination while 81% are immune at 5 years after vaccination. For 11-20 year olds, those numbers drop to 72% at one year and 42% at 5 years after vaccination. For people who are older, those numbers drop even faster. And the acellular vaccines aren't as good at preventing infection--they're more like the covid vaccines in that rather than stopping infection, they make the symptoms less bad. And those 3-5 antigens in the acellular vaccine are becoming less common on the surface of the bordatella pertussis bacteria. Yup. It's out-evolving the vaccine. So where does this leave us? 1) Make sure your pertussis vaccine is up to date. This protects you against the effects of a very serious illness. 2) If you have been exposed to pertussis TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT PROPHYLACTIC ANTIBIOTICS. After an hour in a room with someone who has pertussis, if your body doesn't have sufficient immunity there's up to a 90% chance of you getting it and you will be sick for months. This is one of the ONLY CASES EVER where you should be getting prophylactic antibiotics. Usually, I would say do not get prophylactic antibiotics. This is a special case.

3) If a third gen vaccine comes out (many are in development), update your pertussis shot! 4) IF YOU FEEL SICK AND HAVE A COUGH, STAY HOME. If you cannot stay home, then you should wear a well-fitted disposable n95, kn95, or surgical mask (in order of preference) at all times around other people. 5) Mask in crowded public spaces and on airplanes even if you feel well.

Öksürük pediatri polikliniğine başvuruların en sık nedenlerinden biridir.

Çocuk Sağlığı ve Hastalıkları Uzmanı Dr. Orhan Köksal, pediatride hekim ebeveyn iletişimin önemli olduğuna dikkati çekerek, “Öksürüğün problemli olup olmadığının anlaşılmasında birinci kilit nokta iyi alınmış bir hikayedir. Ayrıntılı öyküyü ebeveynler vermektedir.  Burun akıntısı, halsizlik, kırgınlık, ateş, genize doğru akıntı ile beraber öksürük varsa burada çoğunlukla neden, soğuk algınlığı, nezle, grip gibi viral üst solunum yolları enfeksiyonudur.  Genize doğru akıntıyı azaltan ilaçlar 6 yaşından büyük çocuklarda kullanılabilmektedir. Viral üst solunum yolları enfeksiyonu sonrası şikayetler artabilir. Sık sık nefes alıp verme,  nefes verirken zorlanma ve hışıltı, göğüste çekilmeler olabilmektedir.   Genellikle anne, baba, kardeş veya yakın akrabalarında astım, egzama, alerjik nezle gibi alerjik hastalık öyküsü vardır. Üst solunum yolu enfeksiyonu sonrasında 2-3 haftadan sonra devam eden öksürükler astım açısından incelenmelidir” ifadelerini kullandı.

Boğmacanın Bordatella pertussis adlı bir bakterinin yol açtığı bir alt ve üst solunum yolu hastalığı olduğuna dikkati çeken Uzm. Dr. Köksal, erken dönemde başlanan antibiyotiklerle öksürüğün kontrolünün sağlanabildiğini belirterek, en önemli önlemin aşılama olduğunu kaydetti.

Dr. Köksal, öksürük ile ilgli şu sorulara yanıt aranması gerektiği, nedenlerle açıklanamıyorsa diğer nadir görülen nedenler yönünden incelenmesi gerektiğini sözlerine ekledi:

It’s been a very exhausting few weeks. Cloud Strife’s now been home three whole weeks and he’s growing and learning by leaps and bounds.

He went to the vet for his second DHPP and Bordatella. He’s now eating 3 cups of food plus lots of treats every day. He’s learning to talk with his buttons, and he’s learning so many new words and positive behaviors.

Crate training is going well, as is pen training. Rides in the truck are getting better. Housebreaking is getting better.

Still need to work on leash manners (improving but still not there), nipping and being mouthy, and learning focus and patience. But that’s a lot to expect from a 12 week old puppy.

We are trying to lay down good foundations. He’s learning to meet other humans, but he’s scared of my brother-in-law’s dog, Copper.

It’s hard to update when I only get so much time to myself. Working with Cloud is fun but it takes up a lot of time.

EL PASO, Texas – 25 de julio de 2023 – ¡Ha vuelto! Apodada como "las mejores camisetas deportivas" por USA Today en 2014, la camiseta con cara de perro de los Chihuahuas, que causó sensación a nivel nacional, está regresando en 2023 luciendo un poco más vieja.

En honor a la celebración del décimo año, presentada por GECU, las camisetas con cara de perro se usarán durante GECU Bark at the Park, el jueves 27 de julio, cuando los chihuahuas se enfrenten al Round Rock Express (afiliado de los Texas Rangers). El primer lanzamiento está programado para las 6:35 p.m.

Las camisetas de 2023 presentan la cara de un chihuahua que encarna el espíritu de la marca. El chihuahua muestra signos de envejecimiento después de 10 años con pelaje blanco y gris, a diferencia de la camiseta con cara de perro original de 2014.

Las camisetas, usadas durante la campaña inaugural de los Chihuahuas en 2014, fueron nombradas "las mejores camisetas deportivas" por USA Today y usadas en SportsCenter de ESPN y por el expresentador de ESPN2, Keith Olbermann. First time bathing the puppy and I trimmed his nails and paw fuzz since no one did it yet. He was actually pretty good about it but he wiggled and was terrified of the hairdryer. I didn't have to use it too much because his fur dried surprisingly quickly. I think he came out okay. Gave him some treats for being a good boy.

I had to take him to the vet for my mom (he got poked in the butt with his last round of shots and the bordatella nose spray) and then took him into work so everyone got to see him and thought he was cute. He got to sniff many sniffs and got some turkey snacks off my mom's sandwich.
