Hello friends!! Welcome to Top 5 Tuesday!! This week’s topic is top 5 books set in Europe!! Thankfully my geographical reading is a bit more spread out this week. In fact, we travel to some of my favourite places in Europe! (Although I need to find a book set in Iceland that isn’t a children’s picture book. And a book set in Prague too. Please hit me up if you know of any!!) One of my all-time…

This has to be the last thing I say on C3 finale because otherwise, I will not stop, it simply baffles me in its mediocrity. And obviously, this will be negative, if you loved it, good for you, this is my takeaway as someone who loved this campaign and was severely let down.
This finale changes everything that came before and not for good, better yet, it emphasizes all the faults in the structure of what c3 tried to be, it made most of the campaign feel like a true exercise in futility — How far can we go in a campaign that is meandering and unsatisfying? How long can we have the same discussion over and over and over again despite everyone knowing how this will end? How long can we drag out characters that don't change without anyone noticing? (spoiler everyone noticed)
Can't say I was emotionally invested in the finale because I tapped out back in the 70s, came back for Aeor/Downfall shenanigans, and left again. But in experiencing the finale something became clear to me:
THIS STORY NEEDED TO BE SHORTER.
WITH ANOTHER PARTY AT THE HELM.
If the objective from the very conception of C3 was to wipe out the gods, that had to be clear from the very start. And it wasn't clear, at all — not in the characters, not in the starting city, not in theme. This was a completely different campaign at the start! That clarity was what made Calamity so great, it was short and precise, and every pc SERVICED THE THEME, filled with hubris and contempt, not to mention the setting.
Even Ludinus went in circles for convenience of the campaign length and became a weaker opponent for it, more of a nuisance than a villain. The threat he posed at episode 50 was much stronger than now at 120 something. The battle against Otohan was more nail-biting and emotionally engaging than fighting Ludinus and Predathos, a god eater!!!!
This campaign would've benefited from three to four acts instead of one overarching objective like the past campaigns because urgency is the name of the game and we can't carry urgency for 70 episodes straight (and they didn't).
The constant inclusion of the other parties made it clear how easy it was to detach BH from the story, how easy and fun it was for them to tell it through another party's eyes (one of the main reasons why I walked away back when I did, but that's more of a personal preference).
Which is not to say Bells Hell's didn't deserve a long story! They could very well have existed in a more intimate campaign which these characters were clearly built for! Their premises begged for closer looks in slow moments, something tragicomical, exploration of the inner world while developing MARQUET and its microcosm of injustice and politics which was left in the dust mid-campaign (pun intended).
And I'm not suggesting this just for our enjoyment, I know it's them playing and their enjoyment comes first blah blah, though this is a multi-million company therefore their jobs but this would contribute to their enjoyment! You could see several moments in the campaign how tapped out they felt and acted. I doubt it was "fun" discussing the gods situation ad naseaum, trudging through landscapes they barely cared about, with empty arcs.
I could nitpick every fault I see in the finale but it would be pointless, these issues have been dragged from ages ago and poor character matching, and now this is a culmination of everything and it barely fazes me anymore.
(And yeah it's their game and it's "free", but that doesn't undermine its weight as a story, stories were made be analyzed, and it was a poorly structured one no matter how much I still like and admire them as people.)
WHICH is not to say I had no fun at all ever, I did! several times! and that's what makes me upset, it could've been great instead is just meh.
#one good thing about the finale was when aabria walked in. saddest part when she walked out#critical role#cr spoilers#cr discourse#bells hells#long post#Remember the Stratos Throne set up? well. i don't think anybody at the table does#that's how Marquet was treated#so much for all that worldbuilding we heard so much about at the start with other writers and creators. all for us to underuse it yay#hoping for the setting book which I would be tempted to buy bc that's how much I wanted that continent to be explored#if anyone mentions ashton as an example of character that changed I'll tell you one thing#he changed bc Taliesin DARED to do something interesting and got SO MUCH SHIT FOR IT#know what made the shard moment interesting BECAUSE IT HAD CONSEQUENCES he almost died#sorry but it wasn't the power of friendship that changed him so much so he walks into the sunshine ALONE this finale#like if so many people are complaining and comparing you would assume there was something they did right before#and i'm not talking from a place of nostalgia nor from a place of preferring VM nor M9. I liked BH better! And I was let down#I'll go on pretending everything after the party reunion was a fever dream and they met Braius in an icy tavern in the border of Aeor#cheers to sam riegel for managing a satisfying arc in less than 20 episodes better than everyone else in 120. sorry not sorry#also for not once but twice daring to make his characters fit the narrative at hand#long tags

FUCK Liam Payne! I will no longer support OT5 and I don’t even want a 1D reunion anymore. It’s so disgusting how so many of you defend these boys actions, but especially Liam, in light of everything that has come out. Maya Henry has every right to speak about her experiences. And it’s gross that I’m seeing literal threads and tweets upon tweets of people calling her a liar and saying all these horrible things. You’re proving Liam right! “No one will believe you anyways and the fans will always defend us!”
Is that not absolutely horrifying to yall? That this man is weaponizing his fanbase against women that he has treated poorly? And yall continue to enable him! Everything Maya said in her recent TikTok was true! Yall defend this abuser because of boy band nostalgia? What the fuck is wrong with some of yall? It makes me sick. It’s always “believe women” “believe victims” until it’s your fave, right?!
We don’t know these people! “He would never do that…” YOU DONT KNOW HIM! These parasocial relationships are going too far.
What’s scary is based on some of the stuff Maya said, I wonder if this is only the tip of the iceberg with Liam. He’s probably done so much shit we don’t even know about. Maybe even the other boys???
I know I’m ranting and no one probably cares but some of the tweets I saw defending Liam were so triggering and upsetting. Trending hashtags like #FreeLiam and #WeLoveYouLiam when a woman CONFIRMED that he abused her is just so sickening. This is why women don’t come forward. This is especially why victims of celebrities and people in power don’t come forward. Because this is how they’re treated. Maya literally even confirmed that Liam and his team have tried to silence her and didn’t want the book to come out. I just… there are no more words.
This whole situation is so triggering… I’m so angry and upset.
Fuck Liam Payne and Fuck all of yall defending him.
#Liam Payne#maya henry#one direction#tw abuse#if she is lying why isn’t he suing for defamation#because she’s not lying#Liam is an abuser and yall need to accept that#I will never support him again#and I’m side eyeing all of the boys who will continue to associate with him after this#there’s no way they or their teams aren’t seeing the accusations#and I’ve been feeling weird about Zayn too ever since the alleged incident with Gigi’s mom#and some women have implied some stuff about him too so I just#and apparently Niall is a cheater which we been knew#Louis and Harry have their own share of drama#the older I get the more the parasocialness is wearing off thank goodness#we don’t know these people#I wouldn’t be surprised if 5/5 are actually horrible people at this point#don’t even get me started on none of them speaking on Palestine#I could go on and on#this situation with Liam is just so messed up and fucking with me#like we knew since Maya’s book came out but still#to hear some of it from her own mouth is different kinda#the stories she could probably tell#I feel so bad for her and hope she is in a place of healing and this doesn’t set her back#end rant

from your answer of the ending, I also agree. This is Disney, ultimately everything will be happy ending and I am for it. Yes, they face consequences but they everyone gets 2nd chance (as in an ideal world should be as society is the reason, the overblot had that view in 1st place).
Also I need that Idia-Lilia reveal too!! My priority is done with Silver Vanrouge but I need this one too!
I know that I myself said that we shouldn't go into book 7 with a checklist of things that we HAVE to have or else the book is ruined (which I do still believe) however, that said, if they're going to give us Silver Vanrouge, then TWST PLEASE. I am pulling out my checklist. TWST YOU HAVEN'T CROSSED THIS ONE OFF YET!!!!!!!!!!
Are they going to dangle this one in front of me forever all the way until the end of book 8 too. Will Lilia ever know that he secretly has another sad 18 year old boy who would die for him. Will Idia ever know that the random guy he has no attachment to dying in front of him WAS HIS ONLY BEST FRIEND. Is Lilia going to return to gaming now that he's alive and magical again... Idia is going to be SO EXCITED if he does!!!!!!!!
#twst#twisted wonderland#twst book 7 spoilers#twst book 7#book 7.13#lilia vanrouge#idia shroud#YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND#Aurora and Philip were arranged to marry each other. Neither of them knew who they were marrying. They fell in love but couldn't act on it#because they thought they were arranged to marry someone else!!!#and it's as perfect as two puzzle pieces sliding together when they finally realize they're going to marry each other#and this is what everyone wanted in the first place <3#to me. Idia and Lilia's secret gamer best friends forever thing is JUST LIKE THIS#they're online besties ride or die for each other... and yet... they don't even know it......#it's the set up for the best sleeping beauty reference I could ask for. TWST I am begging you#you gave us so many hercules references in book 7 now give us just this one thing in book 8 PLEASE#also need I say the aurora/philip parralels between lilia and idia. obvious lilidia ship material. it's right there!!!#lilidia

Top 5 books set in America
Hello friends!! Welcome to Top 5 Tuesday!! This week’s topic is top 5 books set in America!! Or, more accurately, top 5 books set in the Americas. Because we really do mean the northern and southern continent. From Alaska to Chile and everything in between. Sadly, while I’ve read MANY books set in North America, I can only find one book on my read pile that is set in the southern continent. And…

hey consider. trent's book essentially being about what ted's done and the effect he's had on all these lives and on the team and yes, it's his philosophy, but it's also him, so persistent and kind and sincere and brave, because maybe anyone could have done it but no one ever did, no one ever has, and even if trent doesn't directly say it in the book about how ted's changed his life, changed him, and how ted--not just his ideas, but ted--changed lives and changed nelson road for the better. and even if those ideas can persist after he's gone, even if it's a seed that once planted can flourish on its own, ted still planted the seed. and then the only feedback ted leaves him is that it's good, but it was never about him. it's good, but he disagrees with a fundamental pillar of the thesis. it's good, but trent's wrong. and trent, who wants him to like it, who cares about his opinion, who wants ted to like him and wants ted to like what trent has to say about him and what trent's written about him, trent who had said they could offer criticism so trent could tell them how they were wrong... takes the criticism. changes the title. out of respect or just because ted asked, and trent's helpless to refuse him. for ted. ted reads the book trent desperately wants him to like, that trent's spent all season writing, that trent's poured his soul into, and casually tells him he disagrees with a huge part of it. and trent takes it to heart.
#this isn't necessarily 'canon' considering we dont know exactly what trent said in the book and such but im saying CONSIDER#BECAUSE IT'S PAINFUL#trent crimm#ted lasso#gertspeak#this isnt to say ted's a bad person or anything man is fucking Going Through It#dont think hed realize how deeply it could cut--like the laugh police thing--esp bc hes kinda caught up in this idea#they dont need him#and he can leave and it wont matter#and that has to be true because he thinks he has to leave and if they dont need him if it was never really him in the first place#then that's okay isn't it?#and hes so determined so set on this path he's made for himself he doesnt see the hearts he's breaking#from his friends' to trent's to his own#tedependent

Literally tired of people saying TWoK has no plot! What do you mean? Have you ever read a high fantasy book? You’re not going to get all the answers in one book. Just say you don’t appreciate intricate story telling and set up and just go your way. TWoK is a huge character study of our main characters. If you’re not a character reader that’s fine, but to say that there’s no plot is completely untrue.
The world building and the magic system explained in the book is absolutely necessary for understanding the series.
If you don’t have the patience then maybe don’t read the series? Not everything is going to be for everyone! Life is too short to read a 1000 page book and hating it.
I understand saying yeah it’s a little slow but to go on and on about how this book sucks and have no plot is absolutely ridiculous.

Road To Ruin
start of a postapocalyptic fantasy series set in an Asian-inspired desert world plagued by dangerous storms
follows a courier who transports romantic letters between a prince and princess, who helps the princess escape across the wastes towards the prince’s safe haven
but they’re pursued by bounty hunters, and accidentally uncover some ancient secrets. and also she’s in love with both of them
dinosaurs, magical motorbikes,
bi MC, start of polyam triad
#Road To Ruin#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#I enjoyed this overall!#a fun fast paced adventure set in a mad max-esque world with dinosaurs and magic.#quite liked the polyamorous love triangle going on - I even liked the guy which is a win.#It does start with them all already having a crush on each other so we kinda miss seeing how that developed in the first place#but I think I prefer this considering the book is only set over a number of days.#It is unfortunate that the magic is called mana.#But that is so deeply entrenched in fantasy that I guess I can’t critique any individual book for it that hard.#I will say - I read assuming it’s YA and only now after finishing it it seems to apparently be adult.#the worldbuilding and character relationships felt more YA to me - and I don’t mean that as an insult#I just probably would have expected more complexity in certain areas if I knew this was adult. I dunno.#all the ending is like. everything is wrapped up about the narrative (as much as i care about now anyway) but the relationship is Not#I did not realise it would be a series. but also I don't feel like I want any more of the plot other than this one thing?#bisexual books#polyamorous books

Buggy's Book Reviews: The Old Mountain Spellbook

Well well well, look who has returned after a long hiatus while life kicked my ass from here to Sunday. Let's get started with a bang shall we? TW: Slavery mentions, appropriation, generalized frustration at the writing space currently with the rise of ghost writers and AI.
This is: The Old Mountain Spellbook by Alda Dagny
Rating: 1/10
Buckle up. This is gonna be a bumpy ride. Prepare to be shocked, horrified, and gobsmacked.
For context the cover art of this book caught my eye and then I read the small blurb of a subtitle for it and cringed so incredibly hard that the moment it showed up in my Spotify audio book list, I had to give it a listen for a measly 3 and a half hours of my life while at work.
I regret this decision so very hard.
For further context:
This “author” Alda Dagny has also written books on…”The Secrets of the Nile” a three part series called “The Old Norse Spellbook:”, and “Secrets of Mesoamerica”.
My head hurts from thinking about the gall to “write” on such a wide variety of topics in a seniority form. But before I get ahead of myself let me go back into my proper format for these reviews.
Pros: SOME of the information is right. The mentions of planting by the signs and how the signs works was very accurate. The generalized description of grannies, while very surface level and focused far too heavily on the midwife aspect, which don’t get me wrong is super mega ulta important! Was right if not very generalized. That’s about all I’ve got.
It does mention that Hoodoo is a closed practice that stems from African Dispora/the Trans-Atlantic slave trade which good for this “author”. You will understand why that term is in parenthesis later!
This book also included a Bell Witch mention twice which made my Tennessee heart hopeful for like two seconds.
Cons: Gods help me. For starters, I know this was likely not a choice this “author” made, but why in the seven hells did the publisher pick an AUSTRALIAN PERSON to do the narration for this book? The mispronunciation of Appalachia and Asfidy are now burned into my brain for life. I do not appreciate it. The MINIMUM a narrator should do is glance through for proper pronunciations.
My gripes with the audiobook out of the way let’s get into the meat of this review: The book’s contents and why I believe this was ghost written/stolen from other places and put forward by an ai generated “author”.
The second entire chapter of this book, a whopping 40 minutes of the audiobook, is all about Hoodoo. The real thing that got me was it SAYS that Hoodoo is a CLOSED PRACTICE stemming from Africa Diaspora. And what does this book do anyway? Break Hoodoo down into stupid candle magic and mojo bags and tell you how to do “it”. I was surprised it got the origin of Hoodoo right! It was RIGHT! And then it shits on itself.
Examples: Hoodoo shares similarities with wicca. Tarot is incredibly important to the practice. And it is a religion and not a practice. The practice is “rootwork”. Did I mention that Hoodoo focuses on “doing no harm”? Oh and the third eye is important too, especially to Hoodoo despite it being a Hindu concept. I cannot make this up.
The wording of this book is also incredibly strange. I don’t have a ebook version to double check but I am positive the words Furthermore and However are included at least 50 times. EACH. The book also repeats itself numerous times. A good example is with the Furnace Ghost story it tells in the 4th chapter I believe? Where it repeats the same end of sentence with just slightly different beginnings within the same paragraph. There’s also other phrases used at the end of chapters to usher in the next that just read…weirdly? Examples: “Let me set the stage” “You are not going to want to miss this.” What are you writing a script or a book?
Now for the proper “Appalachian Magic” side of the book. It consistently uses the term Granny Witch, and states numerous times that witchcraft was just fine! Appalachia did not care and the “fear” of witches never penetrated the mountains. But yet a “granny witch” would use faith not as a proper form of healing, oh no! It was “to keep doubters at bay”. So faith healing was a cover up and not the actual practice itself.
This book also has two whole chapters on legends and myths, which is fine, if it didn’t focus on the ones everyone knows like Bigfoot and Mothman only. Like it doesn’t cover any of the smaller localized things or spirits at all. Just the things you could easily find if you googled “appalachia spooky”. Hmmmmmm. Strange isn’t it?
This book also stated that tarot and black tourmaline was ULTRA important to Appalachian magic. Like where does that come from? There’s another chapter dedicated to the phases of the moon and “spells” which they mean in a modern new-age witchcraft way and definitely not Appalachian, although I will give it props for saying the moon phases and astrology are different here. Because they are.
Tiktok was mentioned twice; it appropriates dreamcatchers and other Hoodoo items in the “non-Hoodoo” sections of the book. Hell, it even said, accurately mind you, that Mothman has even “spawned fanfiction”. It even got the information on where Roanoke was…wrong. Roanoke is in Virginia. This book claims it is in North Carolina.
The most damning thing however, and I use that however in a very sarcastic tone, is the “author” herself. I painstakingly typed in some text from the book and was surprised to see it come back as “human written”. I don’t think that’s quite true, if it is then they text portions must be stolen from other sources and shoved into a book form. Because this author? A bot.
Her profile image used on Amazon, which is the ONLY SOURCE of information on her, no socials, no google, nothing. Is AI generated. Proof is here:
And a blurb from the book I wanted to include as well. The first of many furthermores used.
The author's Biography, which again is the ONLY SOURCE OF INFORMATION on this supposed person, says as follows: "Alda Dagny has always been drawn to history. Growing up in Scandinavia, history has always been all around her, gods and goddesses, pagan rituals and spells. Ancient ruins that dot her homeland captivated her from an early age, giving her a lifelong love of all things history. " That's all I can find. That's it. Just AI and or ghost writing/theft has officially found itself in the AFM space. I hate this society.
#witchblr#buggy's book reviews#appalachian folk magic#AI has no place in the writing space.#Buggy is furious and might actually crack out that book I want to write now.#The more bullshit AFM books I read the more I want to write my own and set things straight.
