“Going Down” Songwriter, Mar-Keys Co-founder Don Nix Dies at 83
Don Nix, the Stax session musician and solo artist who wrote “Going Down,” has died at 83.
Nix’s Dec. 31, 2024, death was announced by the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, where many of Nix’s photographs and artifacts reside.
No cause of death was given.
“Rest in peace, Memphis music legend Don Nix,” Tinsley Ellis wrote on social media.
A saxophonist, Nix co-founded the Mar-Keys, which served as the original Stax house band and eventually morphed into Booker T. & the M.G.’s. The first musician signed to Leon Russell’s Shelter Records, Nix released nine solo albums between 1971 and 2008 and is best known for writing “Going Down,” famously covered by Freddie King and the Jeff Beck Group.
The song “will be with us until the end of time,” the Stax Museum said.
Nix was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2023, which eulogized him as “an extraordinary songwriter, composer and arranger.”
“His contributions to music will forever resonate with us,” the hall said in a statement. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and all who were touched by his incredible talent.”
