Favorite Fiction of 2023
Weâre giving you a head start this year on our favorite reads of 2023, starting with fiction! Weâve found winners ranging from literary fiction, sci-fi, fantasy and romance, translated works, thrillers and short stories. The staff had a great reading year and overlapped favorites in several instances. Nancy, Brad and Caitlin all loved The Librarianist, by Patrick de Witt, and raved about it enough that I put it on my own TBR. The cozy historical fantasy Emily Wildeâs Encyclopaedia of Faeries, by Heather Fawcett, was a hit with me, Lillian, Becca and Jes. Lillian found a surprising sci-fi dystopia debut with The Great Transition, by Nick Fuller Googins. Nancy and Caitlin couldnât stop talking about The Postcard, by Anne Berest. Laurie and I both adored No Two Persons by local favorite Erica Bauermeister (we have a big restock coming early December!) as well as Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano and Tom Lake by Ann Patchett. Brad discovered Lies and Sorcery, by Elsa Morante, a reprinted hidden gem of a 20th century novel. And, of course, no list would be complete without a Cindy pick, thriller Birnam Wood by Booker Prize Winner Eleanor Catton.Â
Check out our booksellerâs dozen (i.e. we kept adding one more, then one more, then just one more) for the full list of favorite fiction from 2023 and see what looks good for your next read. Or come in and chat with us â weâll be happy to make personalized recommendations!
Favorite Fiction of 2023
Stay tuned next week for our favorite books from the kids section.

(personal) highlights from the part of Stay Turnt At Home that i got to listen to in the background while working because theoretically this lets me focus better than making individual posts.
- *ashley just pulls out a lightsaber*Â âi just wanted to show everyoneâ
- âlets all lose our minds together.â (ashley johnson you cannot just casually drop Left Behind lines and break my heart like that)
-âwho are we delivering to?? weâre a kitchen in the sky? is booker de-witt gonna come by?â (brian tbh this is a valid question and applicable to so many overcooked levels. who the fuck is jsut chilling and waiting for food while the ground SPLITS IN HALF from an earthquake. w h o.)
- ashleyâs many âokay okay okay okayâ throughout. its a stressful game. very fair.
- someone asked âplease let us see the dogsâ in chat and they immediately acquiesced and moved the camera a bit to show em off for a lil bit.
- when ashley gets irritated at the game i can hear her ellie tones come out and i find that strangely...... endearing? It makes me happy. (listen i saw TLOU when i was around that age and The Angst Resonated Okay)
- âwhereâd all the fire go?â âwhereâd all the knives go?â same
- Ashley: âWhen is my whole being not in a game?â Brian: âWhen is your whole being not in a game? Uh, most critical role episodes during blindspot?â D A M N BRIAN
-Â âi might be less of a hermit than i realizedâ quarantine mood.Â
- im not sure what happened with the monitor/screens but i was amused by the âno one texted me to tell me!â *checks phone*Â âone person texted me to tell me...â edit: apparently they played a full game without the game screen. i love it. incredible content.
- âwe delivered more than 1 order! we delivered maybe 3!â
- oh the yelling is both mildly stressful for me and also a Vibe, Overcooked really Be Like That sometimes.
-Â â what are we doing wrong?â *reads chat* â âyou need more people.â âthank you that would be so helpful in a non quarantine time.â
anyway i missed the rest of it but it was a good time while i was there. i love them. and i hope everyone is doin alright. <3

Ablutions and Marmite
I like dirty things, the secretions and smells that come with living in a body. They remind me that weâre animals, and a part of the thing we call the world.
Going to the toilet is the great equalizer. Every person in the world, every animal, has to shit and piss. Everyone has experienced the relief-that-borders-on-pleasure of emptying their bladder or their bowels.
I have a signed proof copy of Patrick de Wittsâs Man-Booker shortlisted Sisters Brothers, but it is really his first novel, Ablutions, that holds a place in my meaty, bloody, beating heart.
Something that I like dirty is sex.
I want to have to wash my linen after a sexual encounter. I want to lick my partnerâs salty underarms, smell the rich manure of pheromones that glob together there.
I want to feel their damp panties, then the moistness that seeps out between their legs, then the hot, muscular wetness of them deep inside. I want their saliva in my mouth, to taste their lips. Then to tongue apart swollen lips that lead to the place that words cannot describe the taste of.
I want to grind my pussy against theirs and know our fluids are mixing.
Postcoital, I want to lie naked with them in a juicy stew of cum and sweat, and scent air filled with the odors of fucking.
Period? No problem. There is nothing hotter than having oneâs fingers in a pussy slick with menstrual blood; there is little more intimate than someone allowing you to touch them when theyâre on. And it feels fucking good when someone touches you when every nerve ending in your vagina is twanging with hormones and sensitive like bruised fruit from menstrual contractions.
Someone who appreciates dirt and sex (and dirty sex) even more than I do is Helen Memel, protagonist of Wetlands, a novel I read because I enjoyed the shout out on the front cover that claimed it to be a marmite book â one that you either love or loathe.

So who is Elizabeth for the Booker de Witt Henry?
Not sure. Maybe Alice? I bet Inkspottie and Trashboatprince will come up with something though. :) Theyâre the ones heading this AU, as I know almost nothing about Bioshock. But hopefully soon Iâll be able to play and maybe provide input if they want.

gender-critically replied to your postâgender-critically replied to your post: TELL ME ALL ABOUT THE...â
cmon you asked
All right fine well basically 1st BioShock the whole game just serves as a counter-argument to Atlas Shrugged and it does address like the possible merits of a completely unregulated free-market society, but it, but it ultimately rejects it as horrible. Bill McDonagh, that dude who is literally one of the most interesting characters but his whole story is only put out through audio diary shit like he never appears in-game except as a corpse but anyway Bill McDonagh, especially his tape âMeeting Ryanâ is basically what Rapture was meant to be, what it could be if everyone had honor and integrity and pride in their work. âI met Ryan the day me and the lads were installing the plumbing up in his posh Park Avenue digs. âOi,â says he. âWhatâs with all the brass fittings? General contractor had me down for the tin.â I said âWell, I suppose itâs the general contractor whoâll be bailing out your loo once a fortnight, then. If itâs price youâre worried about, Iâll be picking up the brass, so not to worry squire.â âAnd why would you be doing that?â âWell,â I said, âprofit or not, no man bails water out of privies built by Bill McDonagh.â The next day I find out Iâm Ryanâs new general contractor!â And all that shit about how Rapture doesnât always win and they have to let Fontaineâs businesses alone and whatnot. He represents the ideals of Rapture/Ayn Rand. But, speaking of Fontaine, he represents the reality of a me first hyper-capitalist free-market society. A shameless sociopath con artist. His only goal is to get as much money as possible, by any means necessary. He doesnât care about anyone except himself, and his only interest in other people is how they can be useful to him. He does help people, particularly in spoilers for a game that came out 10 years ago particularly in his guise as Atlas. But he helps people just incidentally. He helps people, not out of the goodness of his heart, but to get them on his side so that he can use them. People are tools to him. Itâs amusing Ryan and Fontaine hate each other so much, because Fontaine is literally the perfect end result of Ryanâs philosophy. Fontaine is the reality of the human condition. A society built with no government, with no restrictions, with a completely free market, is an amazing idea and would work if everyone had empathy and integrity and honor like Bill McDonagh. But most donât. Most are only looking out for number one. Theyâre selfish, callous, and avaricious. So a society like Rapture is doomed to fail.
BioShock Infinite, on the other hand, now like i feel like this game kinda fails on the whole sociopolitical theme front. Because, now donât get me wrong, they got everything historically just about right. The Founders are actually even a bit backwards for the time, like even by 1912 standards theyâre racist and xenophobic, but it makes sense in context. And a blind man could see that the gameâs taking the piss out of xenophobia and jingoism and religious fundamentalism. But first of all, itâs not really...thereâs some shit in there about how the Prophet preaches mercy and forgiveness and humility Lady Comstock i think Lady Comstock is the closest to a Bill McDonagh type of character in Infinite, talking about how God forgives everything and sheâs growing disillusioned with her husbandâs bullshit, but itâs all kind of a strawman like the racists in this game are so cartoonishly racist that it would even offend racists which kinda takes the teeth out of the deconstruction, you need it to be more grounded in like what racists actually believe yâknow like how Get Out was a potent satire because it deconstructed the kind of appropriative liberal racism thatâs extremely common in society and that goes under the radar and that a lot of people donât think is a bad thing. In this, the racists and fundamentalists are so removed from at least todayâs reality that yâknow thereâs not much of a real social point being made on that front. And then thereâs how the game treats the Vox Populi. Look, the Vox Populi were a fairly historically accurate representation of armed communist and/or anarchist revolutionaries at the turn of the century. The âKill anyone who looks like theyâd give us trouble. Anyone with a gun, anyone wearing glasses.â that is ripped straight out of the Khmer Rougeâs actual policy. Massacres and human rights violations and general atrocity are all part of revolution. Always. I didnât mind that, or them turning on you. They had their reasons. They had good reasons, actually. If some random asshole showed up claiming to dead hero of your revolution, a man who had died in your arms, you might be a bit suspicious too. But what i hate is they seem to have been written off from the start. The game seemed to want you to have a really strained, enemy-of-my-enemy kinda relationship with the vox, so that when they turn on you it feels natural, but they donât do anything to strain that relationship before that point. The Vox donât really show any signs of being malicious until the massacres are underway like 2 minutes before they turn on you. The game didnât make me naturally wary of them at all, i really liked them. I LOVED that brief part where you fight for them. When you take down the zeppelin and theyâre chanting DE WITT! DE WITT! DE WITT! That was legit my favorite part of the game. So to hear Booker and Elizabeth casually just off-handedly without much evidence go âyeah Fitzroyâs just like Comstockâ and have them suddenly be your enemies is super jarring and feels like a lazy hand-wave.
Ultimately, BioShock Infiniteâs problem is that it falls prey to the golden mean fallacy, hard. It takes these cartoonish ultra-left-wing thugs and these cartoonish ultra-right-wing racists and pits them against each other with Bookerâs cynical âyeah, whatever, everyoneâs wrong, everyone sucks, i donât give a shit about politicsâ  at the center like itâs supposed to be the take-away message. Itâs like Atlasâ bit from the first game âThere was a time i cared about politics...but itâs just an excuse men use to kill each other.â BioShock Infinite seems to be whole-heartedly buying into that philosophy without consideration for people actually wanting to make the world a better place, which i find lazy and disappointing.

Name: Harmony Nicknames: Harmz, Hamony, Harmzony, Harmonica Solo, Hermione Zodiac sign: Scorpio Height: Approximately 5 feet, 3 inches Orientation: Bisexual af Ethnicity: NZ European sums it up best but Iâm descended from a Maori chief and my Grandad is Hungarian (he came to NZ as a refugee), and my mumâs a mixture of all parts of the UK, so... itâs a bit of a clusterfuck. I donât mind though. Lots of beautiful cultures to immerse myself in, whether itâs Hungarian food, or a music-filled family reunion with my Maori relatives Favorite fruit: My favourite fruit to eat on its own is definitely strawberry, but Iâm a sucker for anything even vaguely mango flavoured tbh Favorite season: Summer Favorite book series: Harry Potter (including the Fantastic Beasts Screenplay, the Hogwarts textbooks, The Tales of Beedle the Bard, and yes, The Cursed Child). The Fallen series is also pretty top though. Favorite flower: Roses, I guess. Idk really Favorite scent: Vanilla, or peach. Favorite color: Red Favorite animal: Tie between cats and dogs. I also think horses are pretty top, but I am also an anxious smol bean who feels like I could get crushed if a horse even stepped on me Coffee, tea, or hot cocoa: Whilst I love a good coffee (especially caramel lattes from the cafe across the road from where I work) nothing really beats a hot chocolate Average sleep hours: 5-6. 7 if Iâm really lucky. Cat or dog person?: Both, honestly. I literally sat between my dog and my cat earlier and stretched out my arms to pat both of them at the same time even though my cat wonât go near my dog generally. Favorite fictional characters: Draco Malfoy (Harry Potter), Hermione Granger (Harry Potter), The Doctor (Doctor Who), Lucifer (Supernatural), Satoru Fujinuma (Erased), Sora (Kingdom Hearts), Deadpool (Deadpool) Booker De Witt (Bioshock Infinite) Number of blankets you sleep with: At the moment one because itâs been pretty hot, but usually 2 or 3. Blog number one
Itâs been a while in the making. Years really. Today I got the push I needed when a friend, whose just had her second book published and is gearing up to write another, asked, âWell, have you done it yet?â And I had to admit that no, I hadnât. Iâve talked about it, thought about it, read other people who are doing it, intermittently forgotten about it and generally procrastinated. But now, finally, here it is. Blog number one, an ode to literature and written for no-one other than me. A good way to keep track of what Iâve been reading, to think about what Iâve enjoyed or disliked and to let me ponder on why books matter.
If Iâm honest, itâs actually the second kick up the pants Iâve had in recent weeks. Last month I was at the Auckland writersâ festival listening to erudite, passionate, mostly self-deprecating and frequently droll writers and the one thing they all had in common is that they actually do it; sit down and write, generally every day, sometimes for a little time, sometimes for a lot.
Patrick de Witt, a key speaker at the writersâ festival and the author behind Booker shortlisted novel The Sisters Brothersand the recent French Exit, among others, is a man who doesnât let the difficulties of writing put him off. For every manuscript heâs had published thereâs been another thatâs been rejected, either by himself or the publishers. Â
Most recently, he said, heâd spent months writing a new story when he decided it wasnât coming together the way he wanted. Heâd begun to think heâd have to abandon it when he decided to approach it in a different way and change tense. Success. Five monthsâ more writing and he was happy with the way the manuscript had shaped up and hoped it might be just the thing to break the cursed alternate-manuscript publishing cycle heâd been stuck in. Â But life, in the form of his computer, interfered. One morning he sat at his desk only to discover that the entire thing had disappeared from his hard drive. Despite the reassurances of increasingly more qualified computer geeks it was never recovered. While devastating itâs unlikely to put him off permanently and thereâs little doubt heâll come back with new ideas and a new manuscript.
I figure if de Witt and others can continue writing such superb novels regardless of setbacks and hardships, I can at least write one simple blog and commit to writing another and then another until the act of writing becomes like breathing. Not mindless, just unconscious, and good for the soul.
So, to the business of books, or rather the reading and discussing of them. Those who know me would say Iâm a fairly voracious reader, in fact my mother often reminds me that in my primary school days Iâd invite friends home to play only to lie on my bed reading while the friend occupied herself the best she could. I couldnât ever see the problem. These days I know the rules a little better but am still keen on reading whenever possible.
I have a good friend who keeps me supplied in new literature throughout the year. She directs me to books I might otherwise not pick up (although occasionally these books are ones I want to quickly put down again). Left to my own devices, I tend to buy or borrow books based on reviews I read, authors I know or have heard of, or through the random approach; being captivated by a cover, a title, a first paragraph and a well written dust jacket. My friend, however, is a very considered reader who is particularly keen on awards and lists. This means Iâm in the enviable position of being loaned virtually every yearâs Booker long list and Booker international short list plus many of those that win or are shortlisted for individual prizes such as the Orange (now Womenâs prize for fiction), Costa, Irish, Miles Franklin, among others, and, of course, New Zealandâs own Acorn literary award.
If I have a preference for anything, itâs for noir, psychologically complex books (think Dirtby David Vann or short story collection The Pier Fallsby Mark Hadden - dark books that are illuminating in what they reveal) but really, Iâve got quite eclectic tastes. My only stipulation is that they must be well written. To me the words matter more than the story; literature if you will.
My reading choices arenât always everyoneâs cup of tea but whenever I loan a book to a family member or friend with the assurance theyâll love it, they invariably agree. And if they donât, we can have a debate about why not!
Next blog Iâll write about my number one book of the past year, and possibly a few other random things. And write it I will.

Booker DeWitt
My feelings about this characterBooker was an interesting departure from the previous playable characters of Jack and Delta.  The game became far more focused on his character (along with Elizabeth), rather than having Jack and Delta become more developed later on in the games and have the city be the main character at first.  I still feel divided on this, because I donât love Columbia in the way I love Rapture, and I think that the way the protag is set up is part of this.  On the other hand, being able to converse with the partner character and have a lot of the story take place through that rather than being more passive to the narrative in some ways was interesting.  In terms of his character, I would have loved to learn more about Bookerâs history in the Pinkertons, as that is very relevant to my historical interests.  I was personally never a fan of the Booker=Comstock twist as it feels a little clichĂ© to me (although Iâm not a fan of anything in the game after Booker and Elizabeth start dimension hopping anyway ⊠donât get me started on how the Vox are treated later in the game), though I think that part of this is that Comstock comes across as quite a dull character to me and I would have liked to see more of him to see where the constants and variables between him and Booker are a bit more.
My favorite (romantic and/or platonic) ships with this characterI ship Booker and Daisy hard. Â The universe where heâs a martyr for the Vox - I want to know far more about that and to some extent I really wish that had been the DLC.
An unpopular opinion I have about this characterI honestly donât find him a very sympathetic character. Â And again thatâs something that makes me not click with him as the player character very much.
My favorite and least favorite aspects of writing/RPing this character (if applicable)I havenât written him, but Iâd love to play across him with my Daisy or Elizabeth sometime!
Things Iâd like to write or see featuring this characterDaisy/Vox!Booker.  Lots of itâŠ
