Magazine on Book on Affordable Housing
My Liveable City is a global knowledge platform, established in 2014 with the objective of highlighting issues that make cities across the globe inequitable from the perspective of - affordable housing, inclusivity, environmental sustainability, etc,
All direct outcomes of staggeringly rapid speed and need of urbanisation that we're witnessing around us.
Over the years a network of global experts from the fields of Urban Design / City Planning / Landscape Architecture, Environmental Planning / Technologists, who in their role as practitioners, academicians, policy makers, as part of organisations that work at the ground level, have used My Liveable City’s platform to deliberate these challenges and have shared their views on feasible solutions, shared case studies of successfully implemented projects.
Over the last decade, we have successfully expanded our capabilities of presenting our knowledge in different formats, such as - Print magazine, Online content, Books, Conferences, Expert Programs, Customised workshops, Campus activation, Knowledge Tour, etc.
My Liveable City’s book on affordable housing titled “Affordable Housing, Inclusive Cities”, explores the interface of social justice and city making through comparative discussions from Asia, Africa, Australia and Europe, as well as North, Central and South America. Pressing issues of housing affordability are deliberated, innovative solutions and insightful analysis to address the global housing crisis are offered in the book. From illustrating creative financial models to community land trusts, from modular construction to regulatory reforms, our book on affordable housing highlights diverse strategies for making housing more accessible and affordable for all.
The thirty six essays within “Affordable Housing, Inclusive Cities” book include conversations with influential administrators and civic leaders such as Somsook Boonyabancha, secretary-general of the Asian Coalition for Housing Rights, and Jaime Lerner, architect and mayor of Curitiba, who transformed Curitiba into a ‘global laboratory’ for transit planning, placemaking, and housing. Commentaries on transformative initiatives such as ‘Child Friendly Cities’, and ‘Women for the World’. And case studies of exemplary housing projects by globally known architects and planners such as Alejandro Aravena and MVRDV, (some additional expanding their housing projects). Whether you're a policymaker, urban planner, developer, or concerned citizen, “Affordable Housing, Inclusive Cities”, will offer comprehensive resource to equip you with the knowledge and inspiration needed to foster equitable and inclusive housing solutions in your community.

"Since you've named yourself after Julius fucking Caesar, perhaps I'll follow in your lead and choose one of the conspirators." "Interesting," says Giuliano. "Should I worry about finding you at the center of some kind of conspiracy that ends with my death?" "Not from me," replies Ascanio. He sounds tired. "Not anymore."
informally, some kind of. conversational follow up to the last comic. I'm trying to get the atmospheric conversational whimsy out of my system because I have a vision of the vatican as a body in active decay, a point of infection spreading out and poisoning the well, a jaw unhinged that people walk into over and over, and I am so close to figure out how to convey this visually. maybe.
#not that there's anything wrong with atmospheric whimsy but i kind of want to get into the gross body horror of it all#literally. allegorically. for the vibes. its just hard to pin down the abstract thought of 'oh we should High Rise the Vatican' you know#(High Rise by JG Ballard is what i'm referring to here) like how do I achieve this. well. first. is i must lay out the vatican and become#intimate with the visual set pieces. then i can talk about how this building could literally be hazardous to your health#however. drawing the vatican. is very. uhhhh. man I do not know enough about medieval-renaissance architecture to be inventing#anything and that one book that collected interiors of rooms and houses in renaissance art is NEVER ANYWHERE EVER#and if it is then it's always around when i cannot afford it. i feel like i am in a specific kind of torment torture box#i will not be defeated tho. i can design a vatican through other means.#ANYWAY. i think antidepressants would've made ascanio an unstoppable menace in the vatican#there's a bunch of stuff being referenced here but my pdf reader does not want to cooperate with me so basically we're playing around with#ascanio's household staff (alessandro) that whole thing wrt to ascanio & acts of piety/charity (such as covering dowries etc)#uh. that's it! this time i didn't accidentally call giuliano by his brother's name. which is . sherhhg. so there's a fic i was writing.#italian renaissance tag#komiks tag

Just fyi, unfortunately Peach Flowers House seems to be closing https://www.peachflowerhouse.com/closing
Damn. Thank you for letting me know.
They'd gotten so quiet this year that I'll own I had concerns but it's still a bummer to see those concerns are justified.
I just visited their webpage. Print books are 30% off and they're taking orders through November 30th (discontinuing outside the US shipping on the 15th). Ebooks will be on sale through the 15th.
I'm gonna grab a copy of University of the Underworld (ebook only), as it's their only danmei title I don't already own.
They have published in print editions:
Little Mushroom
Golden Stage
The Imperial Uncle
Peach Blossom Debt
In the Dark
I have read their translations of all of these and they're all solidly translated, decently edited, and excellent books. I honestly can't pick a favorite, they're all great in different ways. Little Mushroom is incredible, and I think everyone who likes spec fic should read it. The Imperial Uncle was delightful. If you like Modu and/or Poyun you'll almost certainly also enjoy In the Dark. Golden Stage I like so much I bought it even though I'd already read the fantranslation. It looks like at least some print titles are sold out; it's worth grabbing the ebooks if the print aren't available anymore.
It's depressing to know that if all the people I know who've said they want to or plan to read these books had actually gotten them, maybe they wouldn't be closing (but maybe they would, sales might not be the problem, idk). Regardless, you've got 2 weeks to a month left to buy them depending where you are in the world. Don't miss out, they're all great in their own ways.
If anyone outside the US wants me to play danmei mule and ship stuff forward lemme know, I can try to help.
#unforth rambles#peach flower house#danmei#little mushroom#golden stage#da feng gua guo#in case anyone has wondered why im so diligent about buying anything i can get my hands on from small presses#its because i was here when manga was first getting popular#a lot of those early publishers folded and when they did their titles became unobtainable#i didnt get things i wanted then#i will not make that mistake again#if i can possible afford a book i will get it rather than risk exactly this

This description of Queenie in the glossary of the eidolon is pretty funny, considering.
#the eidolon#the tarot sequence#i knew about it ahead of reading this book but honestly this was so pleasing honestly#i know after the first book came out a lot of people were like… ‘hey and why is one of the only women in this book a housekeeper who lives#to serve the MCs?#and he’s added more women since but she’s still been in the background. continuing to have no purpose but Incomprehensible Housekeeper#(how do two broke guys who live in half a house afford a housekeeper? how did they decide this was a good financial decision?)#and well… now were finally finding out why :)#‘oh that’s queenie. she’s been with us forever. don’t worry about it don’t think about it :)’

Who can blame the housing movement for protesting against landlords directly, for all that they may complain about it? What else are we supposed to do? On the one hand, rent strikes are virtually impossible. On the other, neither major political party has adopted any housing policies worth voting for in my lifetime […]. There tends to be no legal defence when a landlord tries to evict someone, even when the moral case against an eviction might be overwhelming. What are tenants supposed to do but try to humiliate the people who profit so handsomely from the housing crisis? Landlords should feel ashamed. They should cringe and wring their hands at taking such an active role in perpetuating the miseries we see today, and the public should be bitterly critical of them for it.

today in "my weirdly specific knowledge is ruining my enjoyment of a novel", these cambridge undergraduates apparently drive to lectures, and yet there is no mention of any extenuating circumstances that might result in them being granted a motor license, let alone TWO between their household (and, really, they're all living out?), so they would not in fact be permitted to have a car in the city, as undergraduates
moreover the only other alternative is "long bike rides" but a) Cambridge is five miles across and b) their house is on the river so it's not even in one of the furthest-away parts of the city. their lectures are at most gonna be about 2 miles away. come on.
#néide has opinions about books#people should probably go to cambridge at least once before they try to set a book at the university#it is a weird place and those who do not do that inevitably get it wrong#also. an affordable student house on the river? yeah that doesn't exist#fucking nothing is on the river#only fancy places and colleges and meadows

i know 7s probably pays their translators like shit since we’re not exactly, like, a vaunted profession, but god sometimes i long for the prestige (that exists only in my head) of having a real translation job with monetary benefits. instead of my realistic path which will be graduate -> find some job that i can handle working consistently -> do translation as a hobby if i have the time
#do not reblog#not to mention they probably crunch translators when there’s not an extant fantrans available#like i know 7s is one of the more (most?) reputable cnovel publishing houses#but after seeing the way other publishing houses for cnovels treat translators……..#(and also like. the bleak reality of ai. companies are going to prefer 80% accuracy for 2% cost over#full accuracy and research but 100% cost for paying translators)#i can’t help but be jaded#i talked to a prof at the ucla recently and he basically confirmed what i suspected#in terms of like. translation isn’t a viable career. there’s only two people he knows who do it as a career#and they churn out a dozen or more books a year. i can’t maintain that pace#and i’m not foolish enough to think i’ll get lucky and strike proverbial gold with some media that gets wildly popular in#the usa because of my translations#hell the people/person who did san ti into english probably didn’t make enough for a year’s costs.#and san ti is like. The biggest cnovel series. if you can’t get a sustainable wage off of The Most Famous CNovel Series In The USA#what hope is there for the rest of us?#and that’s assuming you get certified. which i’ll be fucking honest unless i want to sell my soul#i can’t afford in the usa ever and i can’t afford back home without a decade of working minimum#and it’s not like i’m smart enough to get a grad position that would let me work and study at the same time#ugh. this got rambly and morose. whatever#c.txt

okay im actually a little emotionally attached to mochis shop being a little cat bookstore now
#so warm......#it invokes the feeling that its been there for 20 years#also seems like the kind of place a witch would run#theres a bunch of plants and cats and warm lighting#im trying to think if the cat witch was a cool side character how would i design her#since a lot of my side characters are cool as hell like murda and lady magg-lynn#it gives off the cozy vibes of broosters cafe#one(1) seating/reading area that consists of a little table and some chairs around it#that usually is taken up by coco/lime/oscar/taffy playing board games or something#some random girl with a crush on lime: heyy is it okay if i sit here and read for a bit?#lime: actually we dont allow reading the books in the store until after youve purchased them. im sure you understand#hes so indifferent and it works against him cuz a lot of girls are like (wow so cool....i want him more now...)#a tiny bookstore on the outter reaches of the downtown area. like before there is a house essentially attatched to the back where they live#oscar somehow affording a house with a storefront in the downtown area#( how did you afford this...)#(i work.)#mochi compensates him appropriately for letting her hijack his store#he doesnt mind though. he wasnt sure what kind of shop to run anyway#plus with magic mochi around he doesnt need to worry about utility bills or furniture or anything ever again so its a fair trade off#(rumor has it that shop has books on anything you could imagine)#someone walks in asking about 8th century pottery techniques from the eastern regions of the kingdom#(let me check the back!) she says and is back with the exact book 5 minutes later

I feel like it really shouldn't be unreasonable for 2 professional workers in their late twenties to feel like they should be able to afford a 2-bedroom apartment
#my bf and I both make pretty ok salaries#but not like Tech Worker salaries#and we still can barely afford to rent a one-bedroom apartment#let alone attempt to buy anything#i literally just want room for my piano keyboard and my books??#i feel like that's not a lot to ask#most of my books are at my parents' house because we literally have nowhere to put them#literally don't know how anyone is expected to afford kids#to adults working full time can't afford an apartment big enough for children#bootlickers are always like 'just get housemates!'#but I feel like when you're almost 30 you shouldn't HAVE to

i cried SO MUCH and i am still crying, but i was in irl house's office today 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
#jo in the tardis*#i cried before the class and then we had to do this exam on the computers#as a final evaluation or whatever and my account just WOULDN'T work and irl house and my favourite assistant were there with me#trying to fix it and they were both like you are ALWAYS on this account solving everything we know you would know how to log in#and then we managed to do it and when i tried to hand in my answers it just wouldn't accept them#so that's why i was in irl house's office because he was trying to fix it#and he has SO many books there... sooooo many i was just turning around trying to read every title#and i just kept thinking i really really hope i have this someday#and i had to try soooo hard not to cry right there#i've never had this in my life. ever. never ever ever ever. this sense of belonging somewhere entirely#and i think both irl house and my assistant sensed this was my problem today and they were both so kind to me#and she literally said that it doesn't end when the classes end ANY of it i can always come to lectures and ask them things#and that also made me want to cry#i just really love this place and these people and i can't afford to lose it... like i don't know what will i do if i fail this year#and can't come back for the next... i've finally FOUND my place and i can't lose it#like what will i do...
