Male Audacity on steroids: Till Vows Do Us Part (Nigerian movie)
This man is audacious. He went to his MARRIED colleague, Sonia, and told her that he could tell from her eyes that her HUSBAND was not satisfying her. She needs him in her life. Some people have mind, oh. So much audacity but so little sense. The men in this movie just keep getting worse. The Sonia’s husband (Tunde) is even WORSE! Tunde took her out for lunch to tell her he was in love with…

Long before it arose in New York City and became an influential style of music around the world, salsa music has its seeds in African rhythms and traditions that came to the Caribbean through the slave trade. Centuries of enslavement caused many cultural changes in Cuba, including the music that led to salsa.
Some people know Bobby Day’s 1958 “Rockin’ Robin” or Michael Jackson’s remake but the origin of the song goes back to the days of slavery.
The majority of the Africans that were enslaved and brought to the Americas were of West African descent where the drum was used as a form of communication. In the Americas, enslaved Africans used the drum in the same way — communicating with the enslaved on distant plantations and ultimately planning uprising.
The enslavers caught wind of this and enacted a ban.
It is absolutely necessary to the safety of this Province, that all due care be taken to restrain Negroes from using or keeping of drums, which may call together or give sign or notice to one another of their wicked designs and purposes. — Slave Code of South Carolina, Article 36
That ban went down in 1740 and soon spread throughout Colonial America.
But the beat is in the heart of the African.
We soon found other ways to imitate the sound of the drum; stomping, playing spoons, washboards, or anything other household item. We also “slapped Juba” or played “hambone” where the body became an instrument where the player slaps their thighs and chest for the drum beat. (How did young boys in 1980s Park Hill, Denver know “Hambone?”)
Although we kept the beat, we lost the tradition, a cultural marker snatched away from us.
While the American enslaver worked feverishly to destroy any vestige of African culture, the Spanish enslaver of Cuba felt that it was in his best interest to allow the enslaved African to maintain his culture. In support of that, the Spanish allowed the Africans to organize Cabildos (or social groups) based on their nation of origin. Thus you had the Abakua (or Ekpe) from the nations known as Nigeria and Cameroon, the Madinga (or Malinke) from Sierre Leone, etc.
Our focus is primarily on the Lucumi, the Cabildo founded for the Yoruba of Benin and Nigeria. This lineage would be the cornerstone and origin point for what is now called “Salsa.” And what is this “Salsa?”

When we spoke of the drum being forbidden among the enslaved Africans in America, we forgot to mention that there was one place that didn’t enact that ban. That place was the port city of New Orleans, Louisiana — some even call New Orleans the Northernmost Caribbean city.
Similar in the way that the Spanish allowed for Cabildos in Cuba, the Louisiana enslavers permitted Sundays off and were okay with the dance and celebration so long as the enslaved African did so outside of the city limits in a place called Place des Negres (eventually known as Congo Square).
After the Civil War, Africans in America were able to get a hold of surplus brass instruments and shortly thereafter began composing music based on the popular music in the Caribbean at the time, the Cuban Habanero. Many say that this is one of the foundations of jazz music itself and the basis of the habanero, the tressilo, can be heard in second lines. Self-proclaimed jazz inventor, Jelly Roll Morton had this to say:
Now take the habanero “La Paloma”, which I transformed in New Orleans style. You leave the left hand just the same. The difference comes in the right hand — in the syncopation, which gives it an entirely different color that really changes the color from red to blue. Now in one of my earliest tunes, “New Orleans Blues”, you can notice the Spanish tinge. In fact, if you can’t manage to put tinges of Spanish in your tunes, you will never be able to get the right seasoning, I call it, for jazz. Jelly Roll Morton
Because of those qualities, a young musical prodigy from Cuba, Mario Bauzá recognized the similarities between jazz and Cuban music straightaway. Bauzá fell in love with jazz having heard it on Cuban radio but it was his trip to Harlem, NYC in 1927 that convinced him that New York was where he wanted to be and jazz was the music that he wanted to play.
Bauzá returned to New York in 1930, immediately found work, eventually landing a gig in the Cab Calloway band. Here he brought on the legend in the making, Dizzy Gillespie, and the two became fast friends. Bauzá attempted to play his “native” music to many in the band but they dismissed it as “country” music. Gillespie, on the other hand, embraced it.
For the next eight years Bauzá played in predominately African jazz bands having seen discrimination from white Cubans. Yet he longed to start a group that incorporated the music from his home and his second love, jazz. He shot this idea to his childhood friend/brother-in-law and in 1939 at the Park Palace Ballroom the Machito Afro-Cubans would debut.
“I am Black, which means my roots are in Africa. Why should I be ashamed of that?” Bauzá said in reference to the name.
Bauzá replaced the drum kit, which at that time had only been around for 20 years, with the hard to find congas, timbales, and toms. “The timbales play the bell pattern, the congas play the supportive drum part, and the bongos improvise, simulating a lead drum”. In the 40s these drums could only be found at Simon Jou’s bakery, La Moderna, locally known in East Harlem simply as Simon’s.
Next, the Afro-Cubans needed a home and they would find that not in Harlem nor the Bronx, but instead in Midtown Manhattan, a club called the Palladium.

Salsa is a set of Afro-Caribbean rhythms fused with jazz and other styles. The truth is that its origins have always been much debated, although as a general rule it is mentioned that it comes from a fusion that came from Africa in the Caribbean when they heard European music and wanted to mix it with their drums
These origins focus especially on mambo, danzó, cha cha chá, guaracha and son montuno, later enriched with instruments such as saxophone, trumpet or trombone.
It was the Cuban exiles and those from Puerto Rico who popularized salsa in New York back in the 1950s. But it wasn't until the last third of this century that salsa dancing began to take off all over the world.
Cuba played a leading role in the origin of salsa. Already in the 1930s, melodies and rhythms from Africa were playing on the Caribbean island. Among them was the danzón, a musical piece acquired by the French who had fled Haiti.
History tells us that it was these first rhythms that were then mixed with rumbas such as guagancó and sonero to begin to create their own Afro-Cuban rhythms, including Afro-Cuban jazz, mambo, guaracha, Cuban son and montuno.
The exquisite melody of these new rhythms soon set in other Latin American countries. Puerto Rico and Colombia were the first to welcome these new sounds from the Cuban country.
However, it was not until their appearance in the United States, and more specifically in the Bronx neighborhood of New York, when these rhythms acquired a greater impact. It was the moment in which new musical instruments were added that today form an indissoluble part of salsa.
The great Cuban musicians who moved to New York along with the wave of these new rhythms created the famous tumbadoras, congas or son montuno, and were responsible for introducing trombones and guaracha.
The Origin of the Salsa Dance Steps
Once salsa was defined as a musical genre in the 1970s, the movements and steps of its dance were collected through a fusion of the African with the European.
These steps and movements of salsa fundamentally reflect the influence of the dances that the Africans brought to the Caribbean and the European dances that have been danced in Cuba since the 1930s.
So much so that the basic steps of salsa are precisely the same steps as the Cuban son, just as it also includes steps that can be seen in rumba, danzón and mambo.
The origin of these variants is in the regions where this style comes from, which are the ones that developed each dance, always under the same umbrella of the term salsa.
It is not surprising, then, that salsa is defined as the result of a series of social conditions and the evolution of a series of rhythms and melodies from Cuba, which were developed and achieved repercussion in the United States.
There are those who assure against this mixture that salsa is neither a rhythm nor a style, but rather a term that serves to represent all the music of Afro-Cuban origin that emerged in the first decades of the twentieth century.
In short, the origin of salsa has always been, and will continue to be, much discussed. American musician Tito Puente was right when he said, "Salsa doesn't exist. What they now call salsa is what I have played for many years, and this is mambo, guaracha, cha cha chá and guagancó".

Regular Season Round 28 MVP: Anthony Randolph, Real Madrid
Do-it-all Anthony Randolph came through with a rousing performance to lead Real Madrid to a 73-79 road win at Olympiacos Piraeus on Friday night. So it was only natural that he would be the MVP for Round 28 of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season. Randolph not only posted big numbers with a season-high 21 points and 4 blocks, but his performance index rating of 30 was the highest among all players in the round. The athletic forward was extremely efficient on offense with only 2 missed shots, while making all 4 of his free throws in the final minute to help seal the win. Randolph also collected 5 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal to earn the third MVP of the round honor for his EuroLeague career. The reigning EuroLeague MVP, Nando De Colo of CSKA Moscow, starred in his team’s 74-85 road win at Unics Kazan with the second-highest index rating of the round, 29. De Colo scored 22 points on 3-of-4 three-point shooting and 7 trips to the foul line without a miss. He also contributed 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Bobby Dixon of Fenerbahce Istanbul and Miroslav Raduljica of EA7 Emporio Armani Milan performed admirably in defeat to each total index ratings of 27. Dixon carried much of the load for his team in its 80-77 loss at Anadolu Efes Istanbul with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Raduljica led a spirited Milan comeback before losing 76-84 to Brose Bamberg. He finished with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Rounding out the list of Round 28’s top performers was Brad Wanamaker of Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul, who reached an index rating of 25 in a 73-67 victory over Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul. Wanamaker posted 22 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

Individual leaders: Milos Teodosic of CSKA Moscow, 12 assists
Nando De Colo outdueled the league’s top scorer, Keith Langford, in their Friday matchup, to finish with 22 points, which tied Brad Wanamaker for the most in Round 28.
De Colo, the reigning Alphonso Ford Top Scorer Trophy winner, raised his average to 20.2 points per game, which is second only to Langford’s 22.3. Big man Ekpe Udoh of Fenerbahce and FC Barcelona Lassa forward Victor Claver of FC Barcelona Lassa each collected 10 rebounds, which were the most in the round. Udoh is now ranked first in the league in both rebounding (7.6 rpg.) and blocked shots (2.2 bpg.) this season.
After delivering 12 assists to lead all players in Round 28, CSKA maestro Milos Teodosic has raised his league-best average to 7.5 assists per game. He also scored 12 points for the lone double-double of the round. Seven players shared the top spot in the Round 28 steals list with 3 each: James Gist of Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens, Nikola Kalinic of Fenerbahce, Shane Larkin of Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz, Kevin Pangos of Zalgiris Kaunas and the Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade trio of Charles Jenkins, Branki Lazic and Nate Wolters.
Jenkins is the league leader with 1.96 steals per game. Randolph shared the lead for Round 28 in blocked shots with Tibor Pleiss of Galatasaray; each of them rejected 4 shots.

Dixon, Datome lead Fenerbahce to big road win Fenerbahce Istanbul took another step forwards by downing Brose Bamberg 78-83 in Freak City on Thursday. Fenerbahce improved to 17-9 and will clinch a spot in the playoffs if FC Barcelona Lassa defeats Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul on Friday. Bamberg dropped to 9-17 and was mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. Bobby Dixon led the winners with a career-high 26 points, while Luigi Datome added 16, all in the second half, and Ekpe Udoh posted 12 points and 4 blocked shots for Fenerbahce. Fabien Causeur and Nikos Zisis led Bamberg with 15 points apiece and Darius Miller added 14 for the hosts. Zisis climbed to third place on career EuroLeague games played with 279, going past EuroLeague legend Dimitris Diamantidis. Bamberg committed only 6 turnovers and held Fenerbahce to only 2 offensive rebounds, but shooting percentages made the difference in this game. Fenerbahce shot the ball really well inside (60.7%) and outside the arc (43.5%), while limiting Bamberg to low percentages (42.5% 2FG, 34.8% 3FG). Fenerbahce held Nicolo Melli scoreless for the first time in 49 career games with Bamberg. It took Jan Vesely just 6 seconds to get Fenerbahce going with a dunk. Nikola Kalinic and Dixon each struck from downtown for a 3-8 lead. Udoh sank a jumper and Dixon took over with a four-point play to boost the lead to 5-14. Zisis and Causeur stepped up for Bamberg, but an unstoppable Kalinic and a put-back dunk by Udoh kept Fenerbahce fully in charge, 12-20. Patrick Heckmann and Leon Radosevic made free throws and Jerel McNeal added a driving layup, but a huge buzzer-beating triple by Dixon restored a 21-27 Fenerbahce lead after 10 minutes. Daniel Theis hit foul shots and Miller added a catch-and-shoot triple that kept Bamberg within 26-31. Dixon hit a floater and James Nunnally struck from downtown to make it a double-digit game, 26-36. McNeal and Zisis combined for all the points in a 7-0 run that got Bamberg within 35-38. Theis ignited the crowd with a three-point play, but free throws by Udoh and a floater by Melih Mahmutoglou fixed the halftime score at 38-42. Dixon kept pacing Fenerbahce with a three-point play and Udoh hit a couple of jumpers in a 0-15 run that Datome capped with free throws to break the game open at 38-55. Bamberg was held scoreless for five minutes until Miller followed a jumper with a three-pointer, but an outstanding Datome struck twice from beyond the arc for a 45-63 score. Vladimir Veremeenko stepped up for the hosts and back-to-back triples by Theis and Maodo Lo got Bamberg a bit closer, 56-68, after 30 minutes. A power layup by Veremeenko and consecutive baskets by Causeur brought Bamberg within single digits, 62-68. Dixon and Datome combined for all the points in a 0-8 run that seemed to seal the outcome, 62-76. Causeur nailed consecutive three-pointers in a 9-0 run that kept Bamberg within 71-76 with over two minutes to go. Three-pointers by Dixon and Mahmutoglou sealed the outcome at 75-82 already in the final minute.

11 things we did not see coming on the NBA’s first big night
Good morning. We have that and more in Thursday’s NBA newsletter.
The 2017-18 NBA season officially began on Tuesday, but there's nothing more representative of the mayhem of the league than a preposterous Wednesday with something like a dozen games, many going simultaneously. In that spirit, here are 11 things that happened Wednesday we did not see coming.
1. The Nets scored 131 points on the Pacers ... and lost! We did not see that coming.
2. Stanley Johnson went 0-13 from the field. We did not see that coming.
3. Markelle Fultz is really shooting free throws like that. We did not see that coming.
4. The Boston Celtics are 0-2. We did not see that coming.
5. Giannis Antetokounmpo is the early leader for MVP. We did not see that coming.
6. The Suns lost by, uh, 48 points in their season opener. We did not see that coming.
7. Nerlens Noel was a perfect 6-6 from the field, had a team-best +9 plus-minus, was not in foul trouble and ... sat the final six minutes of a narrow Mavericks loss. We did not see that coming.
8. Chandler Parsons got booed in Memphis. We did not see that coming.
9. Red Panda dropped bowls. We did not see that coming.
10. DeMarcus Cousins had seven blocks. Sev-en. We did not see that coming.
11. Ekpe Udoh got 13 minutes for the Jazz. We did not see that coming.
12. The Minnesota Timberwolves collapsed down the str -- no, wait. We totally saw that coming. Strike that one.

The Celtics expect a full recovery for Gordon Hayward, though he is unlikely (obviously) to play again this season. He delivered a video message to Boston before the home opener. Surprising everyone, Kobe Bryant delivered the best support message. I wrote up four reasons Celtics fans should remain optimistic despite this injury.
Nikola Mirotic's facial injuries sound horrific. The Bulls gave Bobby Portis an eight-game suspension. Some have suggested Chicago should have waived Portis. My take is that you should decide what the maximum punishment you'd give your most valuable player for this infraction would be, and extend that to the guilty party. Would the Bulls waive Lauri Markkanen had he done this? Nope. So you can't do that to Portis.
[in sing-song] John Wall poster dunk!
Interesting: Doc Rivers explains why he think Chris Paul left.
Carmelo Anthony opens up about his relationship with Phil Jackson.
Eminem introduced the Pistons in their debut in downtown Detroit.
Nice piece from Vincent Goodwill on what the NBA has learned from the NFL's protests.
This is like a Men In Black dunk from Giannis. He dunked on Aron Baynes so hard that the dunk also erased the memory of the dunk from Aron Baynes' mind. I'm impressed.
Before their home opener, the Spurs played a video about equality and social justice... and received roaring approval from fans.
Tony Allen's love letter to Memphis.
This Jeremy Lin injury does NOT look good.
The Rockets are still figuring out how to use Chris Paul. Unfortunately, there was no additional work on that Wednesday: he sat out with soreness.
Damian Lillard has landed on the Billboard charts!
WHO GOT NEXT?
You fiends can grab Bulls at Raptors at 7:30 p.m. ET on League Pass. The masses will find TNT's doubleheader: Knicks at Thunder at 8, Clippers at Lakers at 10:30.
Be excellent to each other.

Baskonia stuns Fenerbahce in Istanbul Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz boosted its playoff chances with a 74-79 road win over Fenerbahce Istanbul on Thursday at Fenerbahce Ulker Sports Arena. Baskonia, which routed Fenerbahce at home earlier in the season, improved to 14-11 to keep its spot in the playoff zone. Fenerbahce, which was missing All-EuroLeague center Ekpe Udoh, saw its five game home-court winning streak snapped as it fell to 16-9, but remains in fourth place. Shane Larkin led Baskonia with 19 points and Rafa Luz added 10 points in a balanced attack that features eight players with at least 7 points. Baskonia outrebounded Fenerbahce 20-32 in what was among the keys to the game. The visitors led for much of the game and went ahead by 10 in the fourth quarter. Fenerbahce rallied and had the ball down 3 in the final seconds, but Anthony Bennett missed what would have been a game-tying three. Bogdan Bogdanovic starred with 26 points and 8 assists and Luigi Datome added 10 points in defeat. Bogdanovic took charge with a jumper and a reverse layup to give the hosts a 7-4 edge.
