Sunday June 30th: Noble / Dial Alaska / Mems / Are You Thinking What I'm Thinking collective | 5:30 PM | $10/NOTAFLOF.
Please welcome touring projects Noble and Dial Alaska to the Crown for a night of experimental and left field / indie art vs. pop! Featuring Noble & Dial Alaska from birmingham, joined by avante-guardians Mems & Are You Thinking What I'm Thinking~ $10 if you can, 5:30 PM June 30th.
~
Noble is the moniker of Lauren Jones, a musician from Birmingham, AL. Her music could be described as “folky art-pop” with lots of vocal harmonies and droning, rhythmic elements. Her new album includes sounds of vocal samples, keyboard synths, drum machines, and bass.
~
Dial Alaska is a noise hotline available to the public by calling 907 600 1698. When brought to the stage, the project becomes an experimental variety show which includes telephony, tubes, drums, knobs, puppets, and toys. Enjoy.

What?
I first came across Fred Wilson's work in the 'Programming and Interpretation' class and it's stuck with me since
This is a conversation with Fred Wilson at the 25th anniversary of his magnum opus: "Mining the museum"
The exhibition disrupted the museum's traditional narrative by juxtaposing objects from its collection, such as silver repoussé vessels and elegant 19th-century armchairs, with items highlighting the local histories of blacks and Native Americans, including slave shackles and a whipping post creating 'controversy'
Why?
Controversy in museums challenges traditional narratives and encourages a reevaluation of established perspectives.
It sparks conversations about social issues and engages visitors in a critical examination of historical and cultural representations.
As a budding museologist, I advocate for a more 'controversial' museum - one that doesn't shy away from asking the difficult questions and inviting the public to debate them.
Relevance?
In today's society, museums play a vital role in addressing complex and sensitive topics, fostering dialogue, and promoting inclusivity.
Controversial exhibits prompt museums to be socially responsible by acknowledging diverse perspectives and histories.
In the age of social media, controversies in museums can quickly become public debates, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful curation and interpretation
Controversial exhibits can spark important conversations about social justice, inequality, and other pressing issues, and they can inspire visitors to take action towards a more equitable future.
What's missing?
I believe that there's danger in museums today slipping into the trap of being too safe in their exhibitions.
While political correctness and appropriateness are essential in ensuring sensitivity, it may potentially stifle creativity if it leads to self-censorship or avoidance of challenging subjects.
Are museums today willing to take risks, push boundaries and create controversy? Do concerns about public reception and funding hinder bold curatorial and interpreative decisions?
The way forward?
Museums should actively seek diverse perspectives in the curation process to ensure a more comprehensive representation of history and culture.
Facilitating public-created exhibits - ones that juxtapose conflicting narratives/opinions on the same topic or question

Additional context: Pool #1 was whites-only and twice as large as Pool #2. Once all amenities were desegregated, Pool #2 was closed because all people had access to the bigger and better Pool #1. Decades later, Pool #2 was converted to an artistic memorial pool.

BALTIMORE: DRUID HILL PARK POOL NO. 2
Built: 1921 Desegregated: 1955 Drained: 1956
Public pools were common in American cities before the 1950s and most were officially “whites only”. When the Supreme Court declared segregated access to public amenities (such as pools) to be unconstitutional, cities circumvented integration by simply removing the amenities for everybody. In short, rather than integrate public pools, many cities decided to demolish them altogether.
Subsequently, beginning in the 60s, there was an explosion in the popularity of backyard swimming pools in the suburbs which were, of course, mostly whites-only due to restrictive covenants and exclusionary zoning. In the name of racism and avoiding integration, American cities effectively eliminated a public good and privatized it for only those who could afford it.
America is racist

Excited to share these custom pieces today :) I had the privilege of creating a custom necklace, earring and pin set for a special couple who were celebrating their 10 year wedding anniversary! They had to celebrate over Zoom because of the pandemic but they didn’t let that stop them from looking fabulous :) I created a very complex layered necklace design and matching earrings and pin that really complimented the dresses the couple had chosen for their party. This is really the epitome of why I create, being able to make something of meaning and joy for someone. I’m so grateful for this opportunity and I’m so glad I could help in celebrating their special day. ❤️❤️❤️
