Green Day: Jen Gale's Book on Taking Small Steps to Tackle a Big Pollution Problem. @sustainableish @bloomsburybooks #Earth #climatechange #goinggreen
Mother Earth needs our help. Easier said than done, right? The challenges are enormous and it’s tempting to simply buy a reusable grocery bag and call it a day. But every little bit–including that reusable grocery bag–helps, and plenty of options exist to make the world a cleaner place. But where to start? According to Jen Gale in The Sustaninable(ish) Living Guide: Everything you need to know to…

REVIEW: The Opposite Of Here by Tara Altebrando
Goodreads || Publisher
There's no hiding on a cruise ship - not even from yourself. Natalie's parents are taking her and her three best friends on a cruise for her seventeenth birthday. A sail-a-bration, they call it. But it's only been a few short months since Natalie's boyfriend died in a tragic accident, and she wants to be anywhere but here. Then she meets a guy on the first night and sparks fly. After a moonlit conversation on a secluded deck of the ship, Natalie pops down to her cabin to get her swimsuit so they can go for a dip. But when she returns, he's gone. Something he said makes her think he might have . . . jumped? No, he couldn't have. But why do her friends think she's crazy for wanting to make sure he's okay? Also, why do they seem to be hiding something from her? And how can she find him when she doesn't even know his name? Most importantly, why is the captain on the intercom announcing the urgent need for a headcount?
MY THOUGHTS
This book is the opposite of chill. I seriously have questions to ask all the characters and most of them start with, “Please, go talk to a therapist ok.” It features a cruise where things are...odd. There are some weird passengers, some hidden trauma, and some complicated relationships. And by "complicated" I mean boys are the worst. I've read a 3 books by this author now and I really liked The Leaving, was confused by The Possible, and am dubious about The Opposite of Here. I do struggle with “rich kids on cruises hating everything and being rude to their parents”...however Natalie was struggling with a lot of guilt and grief over the death of her boyfriend. So her misery was understandable. The book is full of unreliable narrators and that’s always thrilling!
It was addictive! And there were no definite chapter-ends, so I ended up reading the whole thing in one night because I was so keen to know how it would end. Would anyone drown?? Did anyone fall off the ship?? Is Natalie going crazy or is something else much much darker going on??? We must find out.

TRULY WILDLY DEEPLY by Jenny McLachlan
Goodreads \\ Book Depository \\ Booktopia \\ Publisher
★★★☆☆
This book is really very cute and fluffy, but it said a lot of things that had me feeling dubious.
It's really nice to read a book featuring a protagonist with cerebral palsy though! The only other one I've read is The Beauty Is in the Walking and I really wish YA did more triumphing of disabilities! So yay for this book! However when it gets down to the actual story it made me really unsure. WHAT IT'S ABOUT: ☆ Annie beginning a new school and meeting this Polish chap named Fab ☆ Annie's really outgoing and energetic and opinionated (but also needs her downtime!! outgoing introverts yay!) ☆ there is so much food here omg i am a fan ☆ a super lovely WHOLESOME girl/girl friendship! ☆ it hugely features Wuthering Heights ☆ fluffy and quick to read ☆ lots of diversity (and it felt really respectful!) So it was super cute with the friendship dynamics and the banter! It was mostly a stack of very different kids just having a good time! I didn't personally relate to Annie, but I loved how she refused to be told "no you can't do that you're disabled" and the book outlined a lot of everyday struggles people with limited mobility face. Hugely eye-opening and important to talk about! Okayyyyy but the romance... Look, it's problematic (imo) because Annie wants to be a Strong Confident Young Woman Who Don't Need No Man™...which was GREAT. But Fab was all "BE MY GIRLFRIEND." And he wouldn't take "no" as an answer. Annie quite clearly says "no" and what does Fab do?? Pursues her. In dorky cute ways, but the fact is, Annie's "no" meant nothing. And then when Fab finally gets the message...oh! oh! wait! Annie misses him pursuing her and decides she does like him. But do you see the problem here?!?? This book basically UNDERLINES this idea that a girl's "no" doesn't mean anything. I hate that. I get that Annie wasn't sure and needed time to figure out her feelings for Fab, and that's OK! It is!! But then she starts pursuing him when he says no. And neither of them have any respect for each other's words so how do I ship them as a couple? It's a problematic romance and I wasn't here for it. PS. If a girl says "no" she means NO. And the fact that it was SO much centred around Wuthering Heights was lost to me. I have not read it. And if 12-14 year olds picked it up (which is the age it feels more geared at) how many of them have read it? I can see this book would appeal to a lot of people!! And I always love good and respectful (well, from what I could make out! correct me if I'm wrong!) disability rep and wholesome friendship groups! But I just couldn't look past how uncomfortable I was with the romance.
