Why the UK's Economy Stopped Working
Britain’s economy is under incredible strain. More than you may realize. Austerity through two successive, extraordinarily expensive and damaging crises, has left the UK with an enormous debt burden. Compared to our friends in any major advanced economy, national debt in the UK has ballooned the most since Covid. But it’s not just borrowing that’s an issue. Look at tax revenue as a percentage…

Above, I quoted yesterday’s joint SNB/Finma statement about Credit Suisse being fine. I should say that the statement does not lead with Credit Suisse being fine. It leads with making fun of America...Credit Suisse has spent the last decade finding astonishing new ways to lose money and embarrass itself, so this is a little rich, but it is accurate. “Credit Suisse’s failings have included a criminal conviction for allowing drug dealers to launder money in Bulgaria, entanglement in a Mozambique corruption case, a spying scandal involving a former employee and an executive and a massive leak of client data to the media,” notes Bloomberg QuickTake, not to mention its losses on the Archegos and Greensill scandals. Credit Suisse’s current troubles are obviously related to those errors. But they were immediately precipitated by a run on Silicon Valley Bank, which had nervous concentrated tech-industry depositors and was mark-to-market insolvent due to losses on its portfolio of long-dated US Treasury bonds. For all its problems, Credit Suisse does not have those problems.

Why Some North Korean Defectors Want to Go Back Nearly 34,000 North Koreans have defected to South Korea since figures were first collected in 1998. While the number of new arrivals dropped to a trickle in recent years due to strict Covid controls in North Korea and China, they are almost certain to start rising again now that border constraints are easing. For many, the journey is arduous. Since the border between the two Koreas is one of the most militarized in the world, almost all defectors first flee to China until they can gather enough money to reach a third country, such as Thailand. Then they can apply for asylum in South Korea, which grants them citizenship after a security screening. Their resettlement should in theory be easier because they’re moving to a country with a common language, culture and traditions. But North Korea’s decades of isolation and lack of uncensored information has caused a wide rift with South Korea. Once North Koreans arrive, South Korea offers an initial settlement funding of 9 million won ($6,900), vocational training and subsidies for employers for hiring defectors. Many live near each other in blocks of inexpensive apartments, oftentimes the so-called 25-square-meter “rental apartments” provided by the government. When the support runs out, they must provide for themselves — often leading to grim outcomes. The unemployment rate for defectors is about twice the national average. Many older defectors retain a northern Korean accent, making them stand out each time they speak. Others bear scars such as psychological trauma or physical problems such as lung damage from digging for coal in unsafe mines with no protective equipment. Nearly 90% of defectors in Seoul said they’ve had trouble settling into their new homes after a decade, according to a 2022 study from the Seoul Institute. North Korean defectors between 2017 and 2021 experienced suicidal impulses more than double the rate of South Korea population, which is already among the highest in the world, according to a survey from the Seoul Institute. In some cases, leaving could prove fatal for family members who don’t flee. Lee, who defected to South Korea in 2017, and only gave her surname due to safety concerns, could only afford to bring one of her sons with her. When the North Korean authorities found out about her defection, they beat her oldest son to death. “I am so lonely,” Lee said. “I want to go back and die there — South Korea is as suffocating as the North.” -------- Like this video? The current solar arrays which were designed for a 15-year service life are functioning well, but have begun to show signs of degradation, as expected. The first pair of solar arrays were deployed in December 2000 and have been powering the station for more than 20 years. The new ISS Roll-Out Solar Arrays (IROSAs) will be positioned in front of six of the current arrays, increasing the station’s total available power from 160 kilowatts to up to 215 kilowatts. In response NASA turned to its existing Skylab Rescue plans which involved squeezing 5 people into a capsule designed for 3, and assigned Vance Brand and Don Lind to train for this mission. Over the next few days this crew showed the rescue was possible, but as they analyzed the problem in with the spacecraft they also showed that there were safe ways to return the damaged spacecraft without needing the rescue mission. This story is of course relevant 50 years later because Soyuz MS22 has a crippled cooling system and the crew will have to wait for a replacement. https://youtu.be/Chn6yNHJ2UU ** Care in Space - Axiom Space Together with Boryung and Starburst, we are providing space start-ups with capital, business and technical guidance and access to space. More information about Axiom can be found at www.axiomspace.com. https://youtu.be/zuOe4p3s9zg ** ISS Live video stream - IBM/ISS HD Earth Viewing Experiment Currently, live views from the ISS are streaming from an external camera mounted on the ISS module called Node 2. Node 2 is located on the forward part of the ISS. The camera is looking forward at an angle so that the International Docking Adapter 2 (IDA2) is visible. If the Node 2 camera is not available due to operational considerations for a longer period of time, a continuous loop of recorded HDEV imagery will be displayed. The loop will have “Previously Recorded” on the image to distinguish it from the live stream from the Node 2 camera. After HDEV stopped sending any data on July 18, 2019, it was declared, on August 22, 2019, to have reached its end of life. Exhibition Analysis - Evia Island Wildfire
Tumblr media
Photojournalism is a great way to effectively capture a moment and share with others the intended news or message. In August of 2021, a big wildfire hit Greece amidst the severe heat waves it received in decades. This picture, “Evia Island Wildfire”, taken by Konstantinos Tsakalidis for the Bloomberg news who covered on the Greece wildfires in Athens and Evia Island. The picture has also won the 2022 World Press Photo Contest.
Konstantinos Tsakalidis, born in 1986, is a photojournalist based in Thessaloniki, Greece. He is a graduate of the Department of Informatics of Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki and from the Photographic Center Stereosis (“World Press Photo”). Since 2013, he has been documenting issues in Greece to the Balkans countries. Right now, Tsakalidis is a co-founder member of the collective Greek photo agency SOOC Images and regularly contributes his work to Bloomberg News in social and political aspects of Greece, Eastern Europe and Turkey (“World Press Photo”).
Looking at the photo, this work successfully captures the viewers' attention for two reasons. The first thing is the emphasis on the woman in front. Not only because she's the closest thing you see but humans also tend to look at others' faces as first thing. Furrowed brows, closed eyes, gaping mouth and a hand on her chest as if to support her heart, it doesn’t take a genius to see that she is distressed over something. This would then get the viewer to curiously view the rest of the picture. Because of the overall orange tone, it is not obvious right away but the scenery behind her is not just trees and clouds but rather trees caught in fire and clouds mixed with smoke. This brings me to my second point on how the color palette cleverly disguises what would usually be the intense fire color that will immediately pop in your eye. So once viewers realize the horror happening behind the woman, it leaves a strong impression as a whole piece overall.
This photo has colors compared to many other monochromatic photographs at the exhibit, so it was one of the few that was stuck in my mind, and I decided to choose this because I have a soft spot for old people. I find that my impression of before and after reading the description are pretty much the same because of how the picture really captures the essence of the moment without needing texts to describe what's happening.
In conclusion, this photograph is a great piece because it captures the attention of the viewers due to principles like emphasis and the usage of color values that amplify the atmosphere of this moment of tragedy. Honestly, in the exhibition, I was surprised over the fact that so many other things are happening in places we don’t see, it's just really depressing that most of them are concerning news like “Evia Island Wildfire”. To close, I want to remind everyone that climate change is still a big issue and that everyone should strive to make a sustainable future to avoid losing the only planet we can live on.

-------------------------------
Additional comments:
I personally don’t know if the picture has been edited for it to have such an orange-monochrome colors. However, I would believe it if the photographer says it's unedited because I saw a video (link just below) from an evacuee in a boat fleeing from the fire and the far scenery of the island locals could once call home only looks like a scenery from hell. The fire is such a striking red within the dark night silhouettes. Just seeing the colors from far is already vivid enough, what would it be like within the island? The atmosphere must be similarly tinted to the color of fires and smoke like the “Evia Island Wildfire” picture.
