Blood.
A familiar presence.
The only thing every human can say they've known.
Morso than grass, Morso than clean air, More than the earth, More than even safety.
Because blood is there, from the moment you are conceived, till the moment you die.
Itā€™s there when you learn to ride a bike, when you lose your first tooth, when you shave for the first time, when you're first brought to the cage.
It feels as though Iā€™m drowning in it.
My nails, permanently stained.
There's a drain in our ceiling, right below the final room, where the nightmares begin and end.
My place is right below it. My job is to give comfort in their last moments.
To assure the people that were in the cell with me, that I'm right here.
As I was the person before them, and as I will be the next.
ā€˜Until the next is meā€™
My mind whispers as the girl's unflinching eyes stare down at me, her fingers slipped through the bar.
Her mouth twitches like she wants to sob, but the most she can do is lay there as tears slip from her eyes.
Sheā€™s ashamed, and humiliated, as she lies in a room as they pick apart the last of her personhood
She had planned the escape. She had seen the list. She had known her blood would spill, but she didnā€™t tell me. She couldnā€™t bring herself to prepare us for her pain
I knew anyway.
Her blood drips on my head, taunting me, and I can do nothing but cover the eyes of the others with me, in hopes that they won't witness the broken final wishes of freedom in the tears of to whom the blood belongs. The final wishes of her that will haunt me.
Today the blood falls differently.
It pours over my head drenching my hope.
It fills my ear, clogging my optimism.
It invades my mouth, no matter how tightly closed I keep it, the fear of it succeeding, silencing me.
The silence the blood brings is in a way, worse than the symphony of animalistic tearing that takes place before.
The symphony before allowed us to remember whomst weā€™re losing, hope that theyā€™ll be more than a child that was condemned to damnation. That theyā€™ll be different.
The crimson that spills scoffs and whispers to us
ā€œYou are all the same.ā€
Itā€™s bizarre. No matter how poetically I attempt to frame my mind, to ignore the copper taste, and the crimson-stained walls, I am unable to make this feel poetic.
Why must we drown in the very thing that makes us alive?

About Freebird
Freebird
Freebird is a mainland hero. In Glitter and Guilt, that's a term used for heroes that originate from the USA on the North American convenient. Decking is the 52nd state and has a wee bit of a different hero system due to being so much small than the entire country. Due to this, Sweetheart is easily Decking City's #1 because it's so far away from the mainland.
Freebird is the #1 American hero.
He's the leader of the major hero league of America as well as a big ass celebrity. He's a movie star and model when he ain't on the job (think the MCU but like...they got the actual heroes to play themselves). Due to this, he's rather...not humble. He knows he's good at his job, he's handsome, and a fan favorite.
He's a nice guy but in both terms of meaning.
And he is also well aware of Decking City and its defense force. Especially the Beloveds and ESPECIALLY Sweetheart. She's basically his equivalent and the only one who could really pass him up. She also has a bunch of fans and is pretty cute. He does think she'd be cuter if she got rid of some of that body hair but "hey, it adds a unique charm to 'ya!"
On one hand, it's a crush but on the other, it's the perfect move to benefit his hero image. And in turn, he tries to spin a possible relationship as something that could benefit them both. They would be the power couple, the link between Decking and the mainland, and they could have a super hero family in the future!
That...last part always makes Sweetheart have to excuse herself from any situation to barf as it makes her feel genuinely ill (but that's a dump for another time)
Due to this strange fascination with her, he winds up visiting Decking City any chance he gets, especially when it's for professional hero stuff. He can bump Decking City higher up on his list of important things.
Sweetheart hates it whenever she has to deal with him but she has to because she is the face of Decking and Freebird is the face of America. And for the sake of the city and all who live in it, she has to keep relations good or Decking suffers support wise. She also has to play nice because she can't just say she has a boyfriend.
We all know a hero and a villain is highly taboo and the last thing we need is America's poster boy to find that shit out. And saying she has a boyfriend, while it is the truth, would cause him to do some investigating and lord knows how that'd turn out.
That doesn't mean she has to put up with his advancements. She is slick and can talk her way out of things easy. And she can stand her ground. America's pretty boy ain't nothing to her monster man and no matter how much he tries to intimidate her, she never gives in nor pays him any mind. She makes interactions quick if she needs to talk to him and leaves the second she doesn't have to.
He thinks she is playing hard to get and boasts about it, especially back to all the mainland heroes and the press.
Which has sadly led to people shipping them and gossip being spread.
Nothing gets too outlandish as Sweetheart shuts things down when she is in interviews but it's like a fly that keeps buzzing around your head that you keep having to wave away. It leaves for a bit but always comes back.
Bitterbat hates Freebird with all his Monstrum being and anytime he is in town, he is stuck to Sweetheart like glue. He often disobeys her telling him to stay home or don't follow her to DDF meetings (where Freebird will obviously be) but the King knows how much stress the birdy causes his Queen and follows anyways.
He takes his mini monster form and trails her and doesn't leave her side. And he can tell how much she really wants and needs his help because anytime he gets discovered by her, the lecture is a short "you know better" before she hides him in her bust. There's no scolding back home unlike other times, which makes Bitterbat's blood boil the most because he knows how much help she wants to ask him for.
But the help Bitterbat gives would put Freebird 6ft under and lord knows how bad it'd look for the archenemy of Sweetheart to kill America's #1 Hero. Especially when the two plan on revealing their relationship in the future.

Happy DDF! After your answer to my last ask, I just gotta ask another because I love your takes I love John/Dean BUT I wanna get to know your takes on John/Sam. How do you think their relationship would start (if they have one)? Would it be more of a hate/anger fuck kind of thing? Would Dean be involved in it, maybe even the one to start it, or would they try to keep it a secret because they're afraid of hurting him?
HEE THANK YOU
John/Sam would be so different because Sam's need is very different. He doesn't have elder child syndrome; he's the baby! And SO MUCH the baby because he's been the most important thing in his family's existence his whole life, often without knowing the full extent of why. So he doesn't have the need for approval and validation like Dean does. He's free to find John overbearing and aggravating and whatever else.
But as much as I think Sam is the kind of person to enjoy a good grudgefuck, it's not at all John's thing (at least not with Sam. with Bobby or Ellen probably). I don't think they could involve Dean, not at the start, because Dean ... takes up a lot of emotional room. They both love Dean and know that Dean would be there for them without being asked, that he'd basically eviscerate himself for them, but he'd also never let them forget it, in his own Dean way.
So no, can't involve Dean. I think in a reality where Sam and John sleep together, it's when Dean is away and it's the two of them. And Sam is just starting to buck against John more definitively, but not enough to be more than teenage growing pains. I think he'd be at that point where teenagers are a little bit like benign sociopaths, where they don't fully understand empathy yet but they don't particularly wish harm on anyone. So Sam sees John as impressive, still; he's Dad, he always knows what's going on and what to do, but Sam fully believes that he's gonna be better than Dad when he gets old enough. He's convinced he'll be Dad's peer and partner, because Dean's the good soldier, after all. Sam's a good officer.
Sam pushes the issue. Sam sits too close to John and sometimes just stares at him and when John's drinking a cold one Sam will put his hand over John's and guide the bottle to his mouth and imitate the way he's seen Dean drink, that little parting of the lips, the little push of tongue, the slackening of the throat to let it sluice down, and John'll go, what exactly do you think you're doing, kiddo, and Sam'll smirk and say, you tell me! and slide his hand between John's legs, and John'll be in just the right good big dick energy from a successful hunt and a slushy blood alcohol level to wanna see where this is going. Which is a pretty good handjob that evolves into a better handjob as Sam watches for and interprets cues, and then John gathers Sam into his lap and murmurs, you can sleep in my bed t'night if you're not too old for that, and Sam's flush with horniness and triumph.
Neither of them considers for the first couple of days what they're gonna do when Dean gets back. But they have to eventually, and they get snippier at each other, and then John says, this isn't gonna work. And Sam says, oh why? because Dean's feelings are gonna be hurt? and John's like, well, yeah, and Sam's DISGUSTED because he thought him and Dad were on the same wavelength finally! Morally upright and clear-eyed, not sloppy and kind of embarrassing like Dean! UGH. It just kinda dissolves and Sam gets madder and madder about it until things come to a head.
And then they fuck one more time when Sam's at Stanford and catches John stalking him and he pretends he doesn't know John because it's before Sam's fully dating Jess but he's out with a girl, and the girl thinks John is sexy, so they end up in a threeway and John knows enough to slip out the door right after šŸ˜«

For weird reason the scene from 4x16 of Archies, Veronica and Betty carrying Jughead out of the woods all bloody felt oddly familiar, like I saw it before ... then I remembered, it reminds me of a scene from your DDF, the scene where Betty ends up Turing Jughead into a vampire. (I just I am off to read it again, if you get notification of kedos that's me, cause I have a new account šŸ˜†šŸ˜Š)
Hello you lovely little starfish!Ā
I think you and I might be the only ones truly fond of that fic but Iā€™ll take it! I am an idiot and broke that scene up into multiple parts but for the confused, hereā€™s the very start:Ā
Ā  Ā  Ā  If fate can start, it means it can endĀ
ā€œNo,ā€ Betty said, pushing Jugheadā€™s hair off of his face, trying to keep the blood out of his eyes. ā€œNo, not now, I canā€™t-ā€
ā€œHey!ā€ Archie yelled from behind her, confused and trying to pull her away from Jughead. ā€œWe need to call an ambulance, stop trying to move him!ā€
Pulling herself out of Archieā€™s reach, she tightened her grip on Jughead. ā€œDonā€™t touch me!ā€
ā€œBetty,ā€Jughead whispered, reaching for her face with bloodied fingers, ā€œyou and me always, right?ā€
I will accept and delight in your kudos! Listen, this just proves that bughead authors have been writing Betty and Jughead being unable to live without the other for years while we watched them on screen.Ā
Honestly, rock stars, the lot of us. Thanks for the lovely ask, doll!Ā

Tumblr media
THE Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro turned over a global grant to the Philippine Red Cross CDO-MisOr chapter in ceremonies held Wednesday.
Global grants support large international activities with sustainable, measurable outcomes in Rotaryā€™s areas of focus. By working together to respond to real community needs, clubs and districts strengthen their global partnerships.
Global grants have a minimum budget of $30,000 and a maximum World Fund award of $400,000. Grant sponsors can use a combination of District Designated Funds (DDF), cash, and/or directed gifts and endowment earnings to fund a global grant. The Foundation will provide a 100 percent World Fund match for all DDF contributions.
In this case, the global grant was applied during the time of immediate past president Julino Dulfo in 2019.
Past RI District 3870 governor and district Rotary Foundation chair Manuel Along recalled that it was during a training among fellow Rotary Foundation district chairs in Clark last March 2019 that they were encouraged to apply for the global grant.
Along, who is organic to the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro, then met with Dulfo so they could apply for a global grant.
It so happened that Philippine Red Cross CDO-MisOr chapter chair Antonio Soriano also happened to be a member of the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro.
And so it was decided that the global grant, once approved, will be turned over to the Philippine Red Cross CDO-MisOr chapter.
The global grant that they applied for was to be used to install a blood bank refrigerator, a plasma freezer, an incubated platelet agitator, a tube sealer and a T-seal mobile. These are equipment that will increase capacity to store blood at the blood center and replace antiquated equipment.
Soriano is grateful to the Rotarians, saying the global grant is timely in the light of COVID-19.

5 Skin Problems During and After Pregnancy
Tumblr media
5 Skin issues throughout and after pregnancy after flushing with glowing and radiant skin during maternity, several 5 get Correct Rest: less hrs of rest or irregular sleeping.
I am thinking of. That the many unglamorous aspects of my extremely first pregnancy drove me for a loophole. I actually can take treatment of the burgeoning digestive tract, the indescribable fatigue. I also made peace with all the driven swap of my smart hobo carry to obtain a schlepper bag - a preggo's must-have accessory to move the lots of nausea-quelling carbohydrates.
In the weeks, barely-there blemishes black as well as enlarged right into just what can just be cleared up as septuagenarian-style liver stains.
Due to polyunsaturated hormones, a whole lot greater than HALF of expectant mothers create a 'maternity mask,' the dimming of pigmentation across the lips, mouth, as well as forehead likewise referred to as melasma or active coloring, and numerous likewise create eczema. Buy Allergan Botox online
The first thing people see when they come in contact with us for the first time is our face. It is a tell all bill board. Whether your are tired, sad, happy or stressed out, just one look at your face; and the person looking at you will know which one it is. Everybody once in a while goes through emotions like those mentioned, but having a clear and healthy skin is the key to looking younger and confident. Below are 4 secrets you can implement now to smooth out your face and make it clear and inviting.
o Heal Acne o Undo Skin Damage o Diminish Freckles o Remove Puffiness Around They Eyes
Heal Acne Acne is condition that could be a order sculptra 2 vials onlineĀ  problem during your adolescent years and still follow you into your adult years. After your teen years, the best way to handle acne is to manage it. This will require finding the right mix of astringents and cream that will work for you and use them regularly, as in daily. I found out that creams and astringents containing 2% salicylic acid are very potent for acne. There are many over the counter products such as Neutrogena that contain salicylic acid in this concentration. I wash my face, wipe it with the astringent and then apply the cream, after which my make up goes on.
If you have acne under the skin, the best approach is to use warm compress, this will increase blood flow around the area allowing the acne to come up to the surface or increase the body's ability to reduce it and absorb it. It is not a good idea to pick acne on your face yourself as this might introduce bacteria from your nails making it worse. Schedule a facial at least every 4 to 6 weeks for a clearer healthy skin.
Undo Skin Damage The sun supports life but like everything thing else too much is bad for you. You can turn back the clock and start to undo years of UV light damage to your skin. You can remove fine lines around your eyes and mouth, rough skin texture and brown spots. Over the counter retinoid creams will do the trick, but before you start applying them do consult your doctor for professional advice.
Diminish Freckles You can fade your freckles without irritating the skin by using plant based ingredients that have brightening abilities. To reduce the freckles and other brown spots on your face some of the creams that you can use to achieve this include the DDF Intensive Lighteners or the Botanical skin brightening complex.
Remove Puffiness Around They Eyes The area underneath the eye reacts differently in different people to stress and lack of sleep. It might appear puffy or you might have dark circles. The puffiness is due to accumulation of fluid under the skin and you can use an algae mask to get rid of it. If you have dark circles due to stress or lack of sleep, you can use hydrating serums and creams that can attract fluid to the area or you can use plain old makeup to conceal the dark circles.

A Short Outline On The History Of Navicular Horses
By Jessica Ward
On the off chance that strain is outrageous, the tendons may really tear. Late research has discovered relationships between toe first arriving of the hooves plus issues, because of unreasonable strain put in the profound advanced flexor ligament, as a result of misalignment of lower joints. Toe last landing, typically observed as a result of navicular horses illness, may really be a reason or possibly a contributing variable the more as often. The navicular lies behind the pine box bone plus under the little pastern bone. The profound advanced flexor or DDF keeps running down the front of the gun and delicate tissue here and under the bone before appending to the upward of the box bone. The ligament flexes the pine box joint, and the bone goes about as a support that the DDF keeps running over. The bone is upheld by a few tendons above, beneath, and as an afterthought. One of these tendons is the impar tendon, which joins the navicular issue that remains to be worked out box bone or distal phalanx. Ligament lies between the bone and the box joint, and between the navicular skin and the DDF. The bursa, the little sac that shields the plus navicular. The degenerative alterations are generally very progressed when the steed is reliably weak, and these progressions are accepted to be not reversible. As of now, it is better to deal with the condition and spotlight on mitigating torment and abating the degeneration. Placing the into legitimate neurological plus biomechanical balance is essential. Regularly navicular ponies have long toes plus underrun heels approach. This is with almost no internal divider profundity or quality. Presenting the steed to legitimate boost to enhance foot shape and structure is additionally fundamental. The issue of foot care is a topic of extraordinary discussion. Remedial shoeing can be valuable to ponies experiencing navicular illness, albeit now and then the impacts are just transitory. Others trust that evacuating the shoes by and large. To deal with this ailment, as it enables expanded flow towards the hoof. Individuals on the two sides concur that legitimate foot shape and edge are an essential long haul the executives plan for a pony with navicular sickness. Similarly as with laminitis, diverse steeds may react in various approaches to a given method, so the farrier, proprietor, and veterinarian should function as a group to figure an arrangement and to adjust. Mary Thompson, the vertebrate scientist at Idaho Exhibition hall of Common History, has discovered proof in numerous types of early steeds and closes, The aftereffects of this investigation unequivocally recommend that mans mediation regardless of whether by expanded utilization or ill advised rearing practices may never be the underside reason for the disorder, despite the fact that she alerts that her outcomes are preliminary as possible in. A few specialists trust that the degenerative procedure starts with abundance pressure put on these tendons, causing strain and aggravation. Aggravation from strain of an impar tendon can diminish blood stream to plus from the as the significant veins providing the keep running here and there this region. On the off chance that the tendon keeps on being stressed, it can stregthen and for all time. Diminish blood stream to this. Since veins are more effortlessly compacted than supply routes, blood stream deep down would be less discouraged than blood spill out of. This might cause a development of weight inside this. A in light of both the expanded weight and generally speaking diminished blood supply, would assimilate mineral from its middle.

In every part of the world, people are living longer than they used to. Thanks to scientific advancements, fewer people die young from heart disease, cancer, and infectious diseases. Itā€™s no longer unusual for a person to live well into their 80s and beyond. My dad will celebrate his 92ndbirthday in a couple weeks, a milestone that was practically unimaginable when he was born.
This factā€”that people are living longer than ever beforeā€”should always be a wonderful thing. But what happens when itā€™s not?
The longer you live, the more likely you are to develop a chronic condition. Your risk of getting arthritis, Parkinsonā€™s, or another non-infectious disease that diminishes your quality of life increases with each year. But of all the disorders that plague us late in life, one stands out as a particularly big threat to society: Alzheimerā€™s disease.
You have a nearly 50 percent chance of developing the disease if you live into your mid-80s. In the United States, it is the only cause of death in the top 10 without any meaningful treatments that becomes more prevalent each year. That trend will likely continue as baby boomers age, which means that more families will watch their loved ones suffer from cognitive decline and slowly disappear. Despite this growing burden, scientists have yet to figure out what exactly causes Alzheimerā€™s or how to stop the disease from destroying the brain.
I first became interested in Alzheimerā€™s because of its costsā€”both emotional and economicā€”to families and healthcare systems. The financial burden of the disease is much easier to quantify. A person with Alzheimerā€™s or another form of dementia spends five times more every year out-of-pocket on healthcare than a senior without a neurodegenerative condition. Unlike those with many chronic diseases, people with Alzheimerā€™s incur long-term care costs as well as direct medical expenses. If you get the disease in your 60s or 70s, you might require expensive care for decades.
These costs represent one of the fastest growing burdens on healthcare systems in developed countries. According to the Alzheimerā€™s Association, Americans will spend $259 billion caring for those with Alzheimerā€™s and other dementias in 2017. Absent a major breakthrough, expenditures will continue to squeeze healthcare budgets in the years and decades to come. This is something that governments all over the world need to be thinking about, including in low- and middle-income countries where life expectancies are catching up to the global average and the number of people with dementia is on the rise.

The human cost of Alzheimerā€™s is much more difficult to put into numbers. Itā€™s a terrible disease that devastates both those who have it and their loved ones. This is something I know a lot about, because men in my family have suffered from Alzheimerā€™s. I know how awful it is to watch people you love struggle as the disease robs them of their mental capacity, and there is nothing you can do about it. It feels a lot like youā€™re experiencing a gradual death of the person that you knew.
My family history isnā€™t the sole reason behind my interest in Alzheimerā€™s. But my personal experience has exposed me to how hopeless it feels when you or a loved one gets the disease. Weā€™ve seen scientific innovation turn once-guaranteed killers like HIV into chronic illnesses that can be held in check with medication. I believe we can do the same (or better) with Alzheimerā€™s.
Iā€™ve spent considerable time over the last year learning about the disease and the progress made to date. Thereā€™s a lot of amazing work being done in this field to delay Alzheimerā€™s and reduce its cognitive impact. What Iā€™ve heard from researchers, academics, funders, and industry experts makes me hopeful that we can substantially alter the course of Alzheimerā€™s if we make progress in five areas:
We need to better understand how Alzheimerā€™s unfolds. The brain is a complicated organ. Because itā€™s so difficult to study while patients are alive, we know very little about how it ages normally and how Alzheimerā€™s disrupts that process. Our understanding of what happens in the brain is based largely on autopsies, which show only the late stages of the disease and donā€™t explain many of its lingering mysteries. For example, we donā€™t fully understand why you are more likely to get Alzheimerā€™s if youā€™re African American or Latino than if youā€™re white. If weā€™re going to make progress, we need a better grasp on its underlying causes and biology.
We need to detect and diagnose Alzheimerā€™s earlier. Since the only way to diagnose Alzheimerā€™s definitively is through an autopsy after death, itā€™s difficult to identify the disease definitively early in its progression. Cognitive tests exist but often have a high variance. If you didnā€™t sleep well the night before, that might skew your results. A more reliable, affordable, and accessible diagnosticā€”such as a blood testā€”would make it easier to see how Alzheimerā€™s progresses and track how effective new drugs are.
We need more approaches to stopping the disease. There are many ways an Alzheimerā€™s drug might help prevent or slow down the disease. Most drug trials to date have targeted amyloid and tau, two proteins that cause plaques and tangles in the brain. I hope those approaches succeed, but we need to back scientists with different, less mainstream ideas in case they donā€™t. A more diverse drug pipeline increases our odds of discovering a breakthrough.
We need to make it easier to get people enrolled in clinical trials. The pace of innovation is partly determined by how quickly we can do clinical trials. Since we donā€™t yet have a good understanding of the disease or a reliable diagnostic, itā€™s difficult to find qualified people early enough in the diseaseā€™s progression willing to participate. It can sometimes take years to enroll enough patients. If we could develop a process to pre-qualify participants and create efficient registries, we could start new trials more quickly.
We need to use data better. Every time a pharmaceutical company or a research lab does a study, they gather lots of information. We should compile this data in a common form, so that we get a better sense of how the disease progresses, how that progression is determined by gender and age, and how genetics determines your likelihood of getting Alzheimerā€™s. This would make it easier for researchers to look for patterns and identify new pathways for treatment.
By improving in each of these areas, I think we can develop an intervention that drastically reduces the impact of Alzheimerā€™s. There are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about our chances: our understanding of the brain and the disease is advancing a great deal. Weā€™re already making progressā€”but we need to do more.
I want to support the brilliant minds doing this work. As a first step, Iā€™ve invested $50 million in the Dementia Discovery Fundā€”a private fund working to diversify the clinical pipeline and identify new targets for treatment. Most of the major pharmaceutical companies continue to pursue the amyloid and tau pathways. DDF complements their work by supporting startups as they explore less mainstream approaches to treating dementia.
Iā€™m making this investment on my own, not through the foundation. The first Alzheimerā€™s treatments might not come to fruition for another decade or more, and they will be very expensive at first. Once that day comes, our foundation might look at how we can expand access in poor countries.
But before we can even begin to think about how we do that, we need lots of scientific breakthroughs. With all of the new tools and theories in development, I believe we are at a turning point in Alzheimerā€™s R&D. Now is the right time to accelerate that progress before the major costs hit countries that canā€™t afford high priced therapies and where exposure to the kind of budget implications of an Alzheimerā€™s epidemic could bankrupt health systems.
This is a frontier where we can dramatically improve human life. Itā€™s a miracle that people are living so much longer, but longer life expectancies alone are not enough. People should be able to enjoy their later yearsā€”and we need a breakthrough in Alzheimerā€™s to fulfill that. Iā€™m excited to join the fight and canā€™t wait to see what happens next.

Followed by another $50 million in to a number of start-up ventures working in Alzheimer's research.Ā
Dementia currently affects 50 million people and is expected to reach 131 million people by 2050.Ā
Gates also hopes to help build a dementia data platform to help with the identification of patterns by researchers worldwide.Ā
LONDON (Reuters) - Billionaire Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is to invest $50 million (Ā£38.2 million) in the Dementia Discovery Fund, a venture capital fund that brings together industry and government to seek treatments for the brain-wasting disease.
The investment is not part of Gates' philanthropic Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and will be followed with another $50 million in a number of start-up ventures working in Alzheimer's research, Gates said.
With rapidly rising numbers of people suffering from Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, the disease is taking a growing emotional and financial toll as people live longer, Gates told Reuters in an interview.
"It's a huge problem, a growing problem, and the scale of the tragedyĀ ā€” even for the people who stay aliveĀ ā€” is very high," he said.
Despite decades of scientific research, there is no treatment that can slow the progression of Alzheimer's. Current drugs can do no more than ease some of the symptoms.
Gates said, however, that with focused and well-funded innovation, he's "optimistic" treatments can be found, even if they might be more than a decade away.
"It'll take probably 10 years before new theories are tried enough times to give them a high chance of success. So it's very hard to hazard a guess (when an effective drug might be developed).
"I hope that in the next 10 years that we have some powerful drugs, but it's possible that won't be achieved."
Dementia, of which Alzheimer's is the most common form, affects close to 50 million people worldwide and is expected to affect more than 131 million by 2050, according to the non-profit campaign group Alzheimerā€™s Disease International.
The DDF, which was launched in 2015 and involves drugmakers GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Eli Lilly, Pfizer and Biogen Idec as well as the UK government, has already invested in at least nine start-up companies investigating potential ways to stop or reverse the biological processes that lead to dementia.
Gates told Reuters the additional $50 million would be put into start-ups working on some "less mainstream" approaches to the disease, but said he had not yet identified these companies.
The philanthropist, whose usual focus is on infectious diseases in poorer countries, said Alzheimer's disease caught his interest partly for personal reasons, and partly because it has so far proved such a tough nut to crack.
"I know how awful it is to watch people you love struggle as the disease robs them of their mental capacity... It feels a lot like you're experiencing a gradual death of the person that you knew," he said in a blog post about the dementia investments.
He added: "Some of the men in my family have suffered from Alzheimer's, but I wouldn't say that's the sole reason" (for this investment).
Through talking to experts in the field over the past year, Gates said he had identified five areas of need: Understanding better how Alzheimer's unfolds, detecting and diagnosing it earlier, pursuing multiple approaches to trying to halt the disease, making it easier for people to take part in clinical trials of potential new medicines, and using data better.
"My background at Microsoft and my (Gates) Foundation background say to me that a data-driven contribution might be an area where I can help add some value," he said.
Alongside the $50 million investment in DDF and the additional $50 million planned for start-ups, Gates said he would like to award a grant to build a global dementia data platform. This would make it easier for researchers to look for patterns and identify new pathways for treatment, he said.
