Pachystachys lutea (golden shrimp plant, Peruvian shrimp plant) and Justicia brandegeeana (Mexican shrimp plant)
On Saturday, I made my annual pilgrimage to the Bloedel Conservatory. This building is, in effect, a giant greenhouse full of exotic plants. These shrimp plants grow in the shady tropical rain forests of central and South America. They would never survive the winter in Vancouver.
The Bloedel Conservatory was opened in 1969 and it's avant-garde ''Triodetic dome' structure was inspired by Buckminster Fuller’s iconic Expo ’67 dome in Montreal. The building itself was constructed with funds provided by the (now extinct) timber company, MacMillan Bloedel. By 2009, the building was falling apart and needed a new roof. The Park's board was facing a deficit that year and decided to tear it down. A grassroots petition started a process which eventually saved this beautiful 1960's building. If you're ever in Vancouver, the Bloedel Conservatory is a must-see for plant lovers and architects alike.

Discovering Nearby Gems of Queen Elizabeth Park
Vancouver is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada: 49.3 percent of its residents are not native English speakers, 47.8 percent are native speakers of neither English nor French, and 54.5 percent of residents belong to visible minority groups. It has been consistently ranked one of the most livable cities in Canada and in the world. In terms of housing affordability, Vancouver is also one of the most expensive cities in Canada and in the world. Vancouver plans to become the greenest city in the world. Vancouverism is the city's urban planning design philosophy.
Queen Elizabeth Park
Queen Elizabeth Park, Vancouver’s horticultural jewel, is a major draw for floral display enthusiasts and view-seekers, and as a popular backdrop for wedding photos. At 125 m above sea level, it’s the highest point in Vancouver and makes for spectacular views of the park, city, and mountains on the North Shore.
The 52-hectare park is home to the stunning Bloedel Conservatory. There is also a gorgeously landscaped quarry garden, the arboretum with its collection of exotic and native trees, sculptures including one by internationally renowned artist Henry Moore, and diverse recreational offerings such as tennis, lawn bowling and pitch & putt. The park is also the perfect setting for fine dining at Seasons in the Park, a picnic or stargazing!
Queen Elizabeth Park is a beautiful place to visit, and with so many activities it's hard not to find something for everyone in your group. Whether you're looking for a great place for a quick walk or want to spend the day immersing yourself in nature and culture in this urban oasis, Queen Elizabeth Park has something for everyone!
Bloedel Conservatory
Bloedel Conservatory is a domed lush paradise located in Queen Elizabeth Park atop the City of Vancouver’s highest point. More than 100 exotic birds, and 500 exotic plants and flowers thrive within its temperature-controlled environment. Constructed through a very generous donation from Prentice Bloedel, Bloedel was dedicated at its opening in 1969 “to a better appreciation and understanding of the world of plants."
Designated as a heritage building, it is jointly operated by Vancouver Park Board and the Vancouver Botanical Garden Association. Together, these partners also operate VanDusen Botanical Garden.

5 Spots You Need to Visit on Your Next Trip to Vancouver
With a broad collection of 5 and 4 star hotels in Vancouver downtown, including the Hotel L Hermitage Vancouver and other well-loved names, it follows that Vancouver has a lot to offer to tourists from all walks of life.
But aside from a comfortable bed and some of the best relaxation experiences in Canada, what else does Vancouver have to offer that you simply can’t miss? Here are five of our must-visit spots for your next visit.
1. Stanley Park
Covering an incredible 400 hectares, this urban parkland is full to bursting of hiking trails, footpaths, wildlife, beaches, places to eat, and even historical landmarks. Stanley Park is the first of its kind in Vancouver and is by far the largest, with a selection of hotels near Stanley Park Vancouver making it super accessible for tourists and residents alike.
If you’re not staying in one of the hotels near Stanley Park, this is still a spot worth visiting – with the park housing Canada’s largest aquarium, a great attraction for kids and families.
2. The Seawall
Did you know that Vancouver is home to the world’s longest uninterrupted waterfront path, which lies at 28km long and is suitable for cyclists, walkers, joggers, and those with prams and other family-friendly accessories. The path is split down the middle with adequate space for those on foot or on two or three wheels, making it safe for all users and super accessible – not to mention a great place from which to enjoy the scenic views.
3. Bloedel Floral Conservatory
This conservatory isn’t like the average private conservatory. Inside it you will find three different environments – one a tropical rainforest, one a subtropical rainforest, and one a desert. What this means is that the conservatory alone is home to a broad selection of plants and over 200 species of bird – making it an incredible and awe-inspiring place to visit.
4. Whale Watching off the Strait of Georgia
This is a great one to add to your list because it combines Vancouver’s natural habitat with a whale watching experience, which will allow you to witness many of the world’s most incredible marine mammals in the wild. The Strait of Georgia can be accessed by boat and is best enjoyed as part of an organised tour – packed full of information and little known facts, and tons of wildlife watching.
5. Granville Island Public Market
Food lovers and browsers unite, because this one is for you. The Granville Island Public Market is a daily attractions which is open every day from 9am to 7pm – and can be enjoyed on your own or as part of a guided tour which introduces you to the artisan makers and the regional delicacies from all over Vancouver. From tasters to take-home produce, you definitely won’t leave this market empty handed, and you might even learn a few things about local food production and how to transform high quality ingredients into memorable dishes.
