Best Reads of 2024
So. For me 2024 started off with a very sad event (loss of a pet) that dramatically impacted how much I was able to read (basically not at all).
However, after the grief cleaning and frenzied landscaping projects were through, the solace of reading was blessedly restored to me, and it ended up being a year of pretty excellent books. Perhaps it comes with age, but I'm finding that I'm better at picking books that I will enjoy, and stopping books that I don't enjoy. So this is a very narrow selection of about eleven months of good and great yarns.
Best Literary Page Turner: 'The Axeman's Carnival' by Catherine Chidgey. This was a book club pick and I think between the eight of us the longest time it took to get through was 48 hours? Pacy, tense. I was also deeply moved at the moment when Tama remembers his Dreaming.
Best nonfiction: 'Bad Cop: Peter Dutton's Strongman Politics' by Lech Blaine for the Quarterly Essay. Essential reading for any Australian - given that a federal election is extremely imminent, it's worth knowing more about the bloke in charge of the Opposition. (Hint: he's actually worse than previously thought).
Best classic: 'Middlemarch' by George Elliott. An absolute tome of a book. The central tension is about the ultimate state of the heart, mind and soul of the main character Dorothea Brooke. I would die for her. She is better than every man in this book, with the possible exception of Caleb Garth.
Best retelling: 'Silence of the Girls' by Pat Barker. Here is where I confess I actually know very little about the Greek classics, so when I finished I read through about a dozen Wikipedia pages to catch up. A brutal read.
Best Australian novel: Edenglassie by Melissa Lukashenko. I love Lucashenko and this is her first proper historic novel, set about a generation after the colonisation of Brisbane. Shows how things could have been different, and how positive change might be possible today.
Best Series: the Temeraire novels by Naomi Novak. An utter delight and succour. Come for the navel battles, stay for the friendship between the beautiful and honourable Laurance and his abolitionist dragon. Chock full of new blorbos. The book set in Australia also moved me to tears - things could have been different! We could have done better! If only, if only, if only...
Best 'In a surprise to no one this book is amazing category' book: 'The Remains of the Day' by Kazuo Ishiguro. Like I said, this won the Booker in 1989, its not news that this is a brilliant work. Quiet and gentle, but I was a quivering mess by the end.

AUTHENTICALLY YOU from Cesar Velasco on Vimeo.
About a year ago, I drove through an ice storm from Washington DC back to Dallas in order to make Authentically You. It was an extremely difficult time for me—but because this project was so close to my heart, it got me through. Like Grandes Momentos, this piece is a personal testament to the places and people that made me who I am. Using a docu-style commercial approach, Authentically You conveys a sense of personal style and story, merging both my background in the Dallas & Denton Music scene with my craft in filmmaking. It was a challenging and cathartic revelation both on set and its final form as to who I was, who I am and who I yearn to be.
Thank you to everyone involved in this–Every single cast member and location in this piece has a strong attachment both to a very unique scene of artists and to myself. Thank you to the dedicated crew who understood the intricacies of my vision and supported me throughout it all.
Finally, I want to give a huge shout out to every single musician in Denton and Dallas and beyond. For giving me a home when I needed it the most, for being my friends when no one else would, and for inviting me in without hesitation. To the relentlessness of those living in the margins by their own means, to every artists that says “fuck you” to the status quo and dreams bigger than most people dare. To those that stay true to who they are and live with continual authenticity and intention.
Thank you for inspiring me, thank you for giving me a place. This one is for my band, my friends, and finding home in Denton, Texas.

I gues if I was born earlier and somewhere near LA, Peter Bogdanovich would be my soulmate. With his love for old Hollywood masters, for settled beauty in stories and visual choices, with his dedication to the late Orson Welse, his choise of music, etc. etc.
Here is one great example
They All Laughed
Easy, light, heartwarming story about a bunch of PIs.

- The only really matter is when you fall. Because when you fall in love, nobody is a pro. - Alright, what happens if a girl falls for a pro... and the pro doesn’t call back? - The girl gets herself a problem. Anybody we know we are talking about? - Only slightly. Are you in love right now Mr. Russo? I mean, personally speaking. - Personally speaking, no. What about you? - That’s a silly question, I am married. - That’s why I asked. - Mr. Russo, promise me you will never get married - I promise. - Promise me you will never fall in love.

iZombie - ‘Killer Queen’ Review
"Honey, I'm the new thing."
'Killer Queen's well-paced story and sharp script help to continue a positive run of final iZombie episodes, even though the case-of-the-week feels like an attempt to jump on board the drag hype-train.
Last week the case felt very much intertwined with the season’s major narratives, and helped make inroads in getting things set-up for the finale. Though this week’s investigation is oddly inconsequential considering its place near to end of the series, it’s so well executed that I honestly didn’t really care. And thanks to Liv and Ravi’s successful theft of the original tainted Utopium from Martin, and Major and Ravi’s rescue of the captured Freylich’s kids from Blaine’s clutches, things weren’t exactly stagnant.
Where the case-of-the-week was concerned, there were so many opportunities for this episode to feel like a cheap attempt to capitalise on drag’s prominence right now. It’s certainly taking advantage of it, but the script feels quite genuine in its love for it, and the art of drag doesn’t feel completely out of place in a series that’s heavily reliant on the adoption of theatrical personas. Rose McIver also looked snatched in her dolled-up zombie looks, and clearly had a great time. She dished out shade like a pro, too.
With Liv busy judging the SPD office color-scheme, Ravi and Major take it upon themselves to act on a tip she sends their way: rich zombies getting their hands on zombie cures. Naturally this leads them to the Freylich kids who are being held captive by Blaine and his goons for hire. A bit of leg-work and a fun stake-out later and Ravi and Major have them out of captivity and hiding in the safety of Renegade’s headquarters. Hopefully now Ravi can stop beating himself up over his discovery of the cure, since it’s being made public knowledge isn’t anywhere close to being his fault, and most of the missing kids are somewhat safe.
The blame for their capture, and the death of the others, should remain 100% on Blaine’s shoulders. He’s really given in to his worst instincts this season, and his pursuit of these innocent kids is probably one of the worst things he’s ever done. Though, it may be second to killing his partner’s fiancée on the day of their wedding. We don’t know that it was him for sure, but given the fact that Blaine discovered that Don E was the leader of Seattle’s brain smuggling operation this week, I think he may have wanted to get back at him in a big way, and what bigger way to do that than to hurt the only person Don E seems to give a shit about. Darcy was largely forgettable, but I was sad to see Don E suffer her loss, since he’s been more of an anti-hero than a full-on villain this season.
It’s also worth discussing Graham Moss’ role in helping Martin’s mole get out of Seattle with three supposed human sisters; a plot that’s been several weeks in the making. Graham did it to help protect his boyfriend, whom Martin ended up offing anyway (at Enzo’s request). I felt bad for him when he realized this, and at least Liv was merciful when she found out the truth. But with zombies in place ready to infect the world during the National Electronics Convention in Vegas, the damage has well and truly been done.
Liv might also be feeling some bit of remorse given her belief in her father has been completely shattered. She knows about his end goal of bringing zombie-ism to the rest of the world, and though she might see the human side of those infected, she also gets that infecting others is messing with their health and their lives. Martin might have been close to listening to reason, but Enzo’s attempts to kill him in frustration may have pushed him over the edge. Martin had protection on the back of his skull, but I couldn’t really make out if it was the same for the front. Is he gone? And if he’s not, can Liv convince him to do the right thing?
Plus
No Peyton this week, she must have been sleeping off her hangover.
He Said, She Said
Liv: "Look around, Clive, this place is utterly gray. Not a nice Kim Novak suit in Vertigo gray, I mean, a lifeless, greenish gray. We work inside a dead frog."
Bitchcraft: "Bitch needs to have her eyes checked." Liv: "As should you. Those lashes look like drowned spiders."
You could argue that some of the run-time of 'Killer Queen' might have been better spent on the season's more important set pieces, but it was still arguably one the highlights of the season, and featured stronger story-telling that less standalone focused episodes have recently.
8 out of 10 glued-on rhinestones.

The Texans' season continues for at least another week with a jumble of small-world coincidences. After an easy 20-3 victory over the offensively inept Jacksonville Jaguars this afternoon, built upon another impressive game of pitch-and-catch between Deshaun Watson and DeAndre Hopkins, the Texans are a Blaine Gabbert miracle away from hosting the former Houston Oilers in a playoff game at NRG Stadium next weekend.
"It's a new season," Watson said. "It's do or die now. The tournament is wide open. It's my first playoffs. I'm excited to see how things go."
Hopkins pulled down 12 passes for 147 yards as Watson became the first player in NFL history to throw for at least 4,000 yards with 25 touchdowns while also rushing for 500 yards and five touchdowns in a single season. The second-year pro, who scored on a 5-yard keeper in the second quarter, is also the only Texans quarterback other than Matt Schaub to surpass 4,000 passing yards and 20 touchdowns.
Watson led the Texans in rushing for the fourth consecutive game, gaining a season-best 66 yards on 13 carries. He completed 25 of 35 passes for 234 yards but got sacked six times, upping his season total to 62. The last quarterback to suffer as many as 60 was the Lions' Jon Kitna in 2006. At least Watson didn't come close to threatening David Carr's NFL record of 76, set in the Texans' inaugural 2002 season.
"No doubt about it," O'Brien said when asked if he was concerned about how frequently Watson is being dumped. "We've got to figure it out. He's getting hit too much."
Is he also carrying too much of the rushing load? On that topic, O'Brien got testy.
"I don't want to get into all the schematics of what we did," he said, adding, in a nod to the Jaguars' still-formidable secondary, "It was hard to throw the ball today."
Watson insisted he would "rather throw the ball, but if I have the ball in my hands... I'm a playmaker. I feel I'm the best player on the team. I'm just trying to move the chains, making the best decisions for the team, helping the team being successful."
Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey almost pulled down a fourth-quarter interception at Watson's expense, but a quick official's replay overrule turned it into an incompletion, so Watson would go his last six games and nine of the final 10 without suffering a pick.
With Tennessee quarterback Marcus Mariota injured, Gabbert starts tonight for the Titans against the Colts in Indianapolis. The anticipated victory by the Colts – it would be their ninth in 10 games after a 1-5 start – will bring Andrew Luck back to Houston for his first postseason appearance in the city where he starred at Stratford high school. Luck's father Oliver, of course, was an Oilers quarterback in the early 1980s.
Gabbert, once the Jaguars' future hope after being drafted in the first round in 2011, can't be completely dismissed as a threat to the Colts. He does have a victory over the Texans, whose 20-17 Week 2 loss at Tennessee – with Mariota hurt then, too – followed an opening-day defeat 27-20 at New England and preceded a 27-22 home loss to the Giants.
But the Texans went on to finish 11-5, the second best record in franchise history to their 12-4 under Gary Kubiak in 2012, and they became just the sixth team to advance to the NFL's postseason after losing three in a row to start a year. The last one to do it was Buffalo in 1998. Those Bills were coached by Wade Phillips, a onetime Oilers assistant and the Texans' defensive coordinator from 2011-13.
Phillips' tenure ended with an 0-3 record as interim head coach after Kubiak got fired in the midst of the 14-game losing streak that led to O'Brien being hired. O'Brien has taken the Texans to the playoffs three times in his five seasons with a Wild Card round victory in 2016.
"It means a lot," O'Brien said of the Texans' impressive run to the playoffs. "These guys have worked hard, especially the way we started. It's a testament to the players in the locker room. Give the credit to the players."
J.J. Watt, responding to a question about the Texans' fifth AFC South title in his eight seasons here, replied, "I've got bigger goals. We've got bigger goals."
As anticipated, the Patriots routed the Jets today to also go 11-5 and secure the coveted first-round postseason bye the Texans had in their sights until they lost on a last-second field goal in Philadelphia last weekend.
The Texans' turnaround began with a 37-34 overtime victory over the Colts Sept. 30, the first of a franchise-record nine consecutive victories that ended with a 24-21 Indianapolis win at NRG Stadium Dec. 9.
The Jaguars, who were a play or two away from reaching the Super Bowl in 2017, slumped to 5-11. They managed only a single first down and 37 yards in the first half as the Texans built a 17-3 lead. If Jacksonville's current quarterback Blake Bortles, who got benched twice this fall, had hoped to use the game to enhance his chances of finding a new team next season, the Texans were disinclined to do him any favors.
The Jaguars wound up with only 119 yards and just six first downs to show for their 12 possessions. But they led 3-0 early on before the Texans found their groove. A muffed punt by DeAndre Carter and Blair Brown's recovery gave the Jaguars the ball at the Texans' 10, leading to Kai Forbath's 25-yard field goal with 10:11 left in the first quarter.
The Texans, with Hopkins catching Watson passes for 8, 9 and 26 yards on consecutive plays, countered straight away with a 23-yard Kai'mi Fairbairn field goal.
"Hop's hard to defend," O'Brien said. "He's a big guy with great hands. He's a competitor. He always want the ball. He's a great football player."
Andre Johnson, the Texans' all-time leading receiver – for now – joined Hopkins, whom he mentored during his rookie season, on the postgame interview podium and said, "He's arguably the best receiver in the NFL. I'll line him up against anybody."
After the Texans got a first-and-goal at the Jacksonville 5 following Lamar Miller's 14-yard gain, Watson carried on three consecutive plays, the second of which appeared to result in a touchdown thanks to a superb second effort after he'd seemingly been stopped. But the replay showed his knee had hit the ground before he'd reached across the goal line with the ball.
Chances are he would have kept it again on fourth-and-1 at the 1, too, but Miller twitched, moving the Texans back 5 yards and presenting Fairbairn with his inevitable opportunity to kick his 36th field goal, breaking Nick Novak's team record set in 2016.
Fairbairn added his 37th in the fourth quarter from 24 yards out, extending his consecutive streak to 15 – he's 21-for-21 inside 40 yards – and giving him 150 points for the season to easily win the NFL's scoring championship.
Andre Hal, who had begun the season inactive while he continued treatments for Hodgkin's lymphoma, intercepted his third pass in the fourth quarter to make sure the Jaguars would be held without a touchdown, a first for the Texans' defense.
They held Jacksonville to 10 points this season after the Jaguars outscored them 74-14 in 2017, a season that ended with Watson on injured reserve recovering from a torn ACL suffered in early November and the Texans on a six-game losing streak.
"That's everybody doing their job," defensive end J.J. Watt said of the Texans' defensive tenacity. "It's hard to hold a team to 119 yards in the NFL. A helluva performance."
That's the second-fewest yards Jacksonville has ever totaled in a game. Watt was also part of the lowest, the 117 they gained in 2012.
Watt, who missed most of the last two seasons because of serious back and leg injuries that required multiple surgeries to repair, finished the game with a new brace on his right arm, having wrenched it on the play on which he forced a team-record seventh fumble. He said an X-ray proved negative, but he will "get it looked at again" Monday.
"It's the playoffs," Watt added. "I'll play if I have to cut it off."

Fire Island Dance Festival Highlights 2018 from Dancers Responding to AIDS on Vimeo.
Once-in-a-lifetime pairings of ballet and contemporary luminaries, three remarkable world premieres, an excerpt of a seminal piece that changed the history of modern dance and unpredictable weather conditions marked this year’s sold-out Fire Island Dance Festival on July 20-22, 2018. The 24th edition raised a record $604,103 for Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
The festival featured nine unique pieces:
Tony Award-winning and internationally acclaimed choreographer Christopher Wheeldon presented Us, a heart-rending and moving duet about a deeply passionate and turbulent relationship. Tony Award nominee and former New York City Ballet principal Robert Fairchild teamed up with two-time Emmy Award-winning So You Think You Can Dance choreographer Travis Wall. The duo alternated between lifting each other up and pushing each other away, showing their conflict and intimacy through impressive strength and poignant physicality.
Paul Taylor Dance Company’s newly-announced artistic director designate Michael Novak performed an excerpt of Taylor’s seminal work Aureole. The piece, which debuted in 1962, changed the face of modern dance. Today, Novak’s breathtaking grace and skill gave a new perspective to the iconic, playful piece.
Camille A. Brown & Dancers shared New Second Line, a piece celebrating the spirit and culture of the people of New Orleans. Traditionally, a “second line” is a parade that most notably follows funeral processions. Set to lively brass band music, the dancers celebrated life through spirit and exuberance, finding joy even in some of life’s darkest moments.
Caleb Teicher & Company presented Hullabaloo Today, a tribute to the 1960s variety show Hullabaloo. This feisty, fresh and charismatic work, choreographed by Caleb Teicher, made its world premiere at this year’s edition of the Easter Bonnet Competition, Broadway Cares’ annual spring fundraising celebration.
Real-life couple American Ballet Theatre principal dancers Cory Stearns and Devon Teuscher performed Gemma Bond’s romantic and flowing pas de deux, Depuis le jour. Reflecting the memory of the first blissful moments of falling in love, the pair’s affection was tangible as Stearns elegantly and effortlessly lifted Teuscher across the stage with incomparable balletic grace.
Married couple Michael Francis McBride and Samuel Lee Roberts took a departure from their Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater repertoire to perform celebrated theatre choreographer James Kinney’s piece, Birth of the Blues. Paying homage to Sammy Davis Jr. and set to his classic song “Birth of the Blues,” the duo shared jazzy, soulful choreography that displayed their athleticism and contagious charisma.
The Chase Brock Experience presented Splendor we only partially imagined, a kinetic and colorful piece that found joy, delight and wonder in every movement. Inspired by a sentence in Patti Smith’s memoir Just Kids, the piece first premiered at Dancers Responding to AIDS’ Hudson Valley Dance Festival in 2015.
Jamar Roberts & Dancers premiered Palance, a rapturous number featuring five artists from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Dynamic, bright patchwork costumes, designed by Eric Winterling, matched the bold, strong and rooted energy of the choreography, which showcased of the exuberance of movement in moments of celebration and euphoria.
Cirio Collective premiered Tornerai?, performed by Boston Ballet principal Paul Craig and American Ballet Theatre soloist Blaine Hoven. Sharp angles contrasted fluid motion in the engaging duet, which mirrored the varying speeds and tones of the eclectic music by Musica Sequenza and Biosphere.
