Keeping It Steady: Filming with a Gimbal (Highlight Reel)
As I look back at previous film and video productions, I was reminded of the challenge and the fulfillment of working with a camera gimbal. This camera technology has always been a bit foreign to me for the past decade. I have worked with several professionals that are well-versed in gimbal and steadicam systems, often in a supporting role, yet I have never had the opportunity to operate a similar system. Recently, I finally had the chance to work extensively with a camera gimbal.
For a quick and simple explanation, the purpose of a gimbal or steadicam is to smooth video footage while operating a handheld camera by compensating for the movements of the camera’s operator. There are several advanced gimbal systems that electronically calibrate and balance camera movement, which is mounted to the gimbal.
Last fall, I had the opportunity to shoot a short film for the 48 Hour Film Project in Pittsburgh. Our goal for the film was to shoot it entirely on a gimbal with the facade that the film is shot in a single take, meaning the camera moves with the story and characters in real-time. Think of how the movie Birdman (2014) was shot (and if you’ve never seen Birdman, do yourself a favor and add it to your watchlist). Our production team chose to adopt that sort of method of filming.
For our production, The Fatal Burden of Educating Children in the Time of the Undead (2023), I decided to use the DJI Ronin RS 3 Pro gimbal stabilizer paired with my Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema 6K Pro camera. Initially, it proved to be a challenge to understand gimbal calibrations, but our camera team was able to overcome difficulties and film a fantastic little film based on our own constraints.
I decided to put together a little highlight reel that shows off some of my favorite shots from that film, as well as footage that I shot for another project that utilizes the gimbal. Production Processes (Supporting Post)
For the rural scenes there were physical challenges and risks mainly with equipment moving. For the entire piece my main camera was a BlackMagic design, Pocket Cinema Camera 6k Pro. Whilst being a compact form-factor camera, hiking equipment up rural hills became physically difficult due to weight distribution when combined with lenses and a tripod. The weight and size of the kit caused challenge and risk with getting up and down the locations I wanted during daylight hours as to prevent any risks associated with limited light. These risks were thankfully further mitigated where I was able to get help to securely transport myself and kit by car to these locations which always ensured safety of myself and the kit.
For the urban scenes I used London as my backdrop due to its ease of access from Kent and Leeds as well as for its stark iconography. For the first 2 filming days in London, I used a compact rig of the 6k Pro, taking minimal equipment, with no tripod and fewer lenses. This was to mitigate risk associated with equipment safety like theft as well as weight risks. This meant that I had to be careful in my lens choice and limited the type of shots I could get from the lack of a tripod. I ended up opting for a 58mm Petzval Lomography lens which provided the rounded depth of field bokeh control in the two shots below that made the final cut. Secondarily I used a 24-105mm zoom lens which provided greater versatility and produced most of the footage from those dates. On the third London filming date I only took a DSLR camera with no video function which is where I took all the ‘frame by frame’ sequences of the final project using 100s of photos. These three days were well planned and involved exact routes and lists of the types of edits I wanted. This helped time factors and made the production workflow more efficient.
The shoots at home in Kent filled in all the gaps of footage I needed and provided many of the more conventionally narrative sequences of the project. I used my living room as the backdrop for the shots below, which proved to be smooth filming sessions with minimal risks and complications where I had a controlled and private location. For these scenes I had unlimited amounts of time to experiment with the angles, lens choices, mise-en scene and lighting. For the ‘Sofa Shot’ I framed the shot with as many plants I could find which created a delicately, natural contrasted mise-en-scene. I was also able to film this scene with only natural light by positioning the curtains in a specific way to shape the way the light entered the scene.

Group 8 Scene Recreation - Memories of Murder Production Breakdown
Brainstorming
For the final week of the production workflow module, my group were tasked with recreating a scene of our choice. Bar some budgetary and time concerns, nothing was off the table.
Eventually we settled on the interrogation scene from Bong Joon-Ho's Memories of Murder. I personally had not seen the film but was excited to tackle it based on seeing the director's other work Parasite.
Pre Production
We had plenty of kit to acquire in order to convey an accurate recreation of the scene:
Camera:
Blackmagic Pocket PRO 6K, Samyang Xeen Cinema Lens Kit, Smallrig Tripod
Sound:
Sennheiser 416, Sound Devices MixPre3-Recorder and Mixer, Large Boom Pole, Microphone Stand.
Lighting:
LEDGO LG-B308K 3x 308 light Daylight Reporter LED Lighting Kit, Gloves
Other:
Polyboard (White), Black Flag x3, Floor Cable Cover, Clapper, Sandbag x3
In terms of props we also had to purchase a light from amazon which would replicate the look of the desk light found in the original scene as well as being flexible to being adjusted in order to match different shot compositions. We had also our crew supply shirts and ties for respective actors as well as paper for the process of interrogation.
Aside from kit, scheduling was also CRITICAL and just as important as many groups were filming at the same time. This ended up being a close call as the only time we ended up getting kit that was far enough in advance to leave plenty time for editing conflicted with the premiere of another group project we unfortunately had to miss.

Filming
While the location of the scene might not seem complex there was lots of shots and respective lighting to match each.
Figuring out framing with the crew/ Practicing lines with actors
We experimented with different angles and setups in the classroom we had booked for the day, and settled on using the corner of the room, which was conveniently near lots of sockets (Useful for our luck of batteries dying).
The classroom booking and the orientation of set placement actually worked out in our favour as we had full view of the room's projector, on which we displayed the original scene allowing both actors and the crew to get a feel for each respective shot as it came and went.
This initial shot we filmed first was actually quite simple compared to the others as we only had one character to worry about, along with just having to light his face, as opposed to later shots with characters blocking part of the framing.
Post Production
I helmed the post production of this project, inheriting the audio and video files onto my macbook. I then edited the film in premiere pro.
FInished Timeline
I attempted to organise individual cuts by colour coding different takes and angles, as the scene ended up being pretty complex to put together.
While not integral to recreating the scene, I thought a nice touch in the post production process would be the inclusion of Korean subtitles, paying homage to original language of the film.
Colour Match Feature
I used premiere pro's colour match feature to try and make some small lighting adjustments based on the original scenes. Admittedly, I don't have much experience with colour correction so I didn't go too in depth past this stage. However, this definitely something I want to learn over the winter break..

Rhythm follows 4 professionals in their fields, whose passions centre entirely around rhythm. Connor Griffiths on the drums, who wrote the track and scored this film. Monique Jonas, head of Jona Dance company. Matt Harris, professional BMX athlete currently riding for Tall Order BMX, and Dan Saunders a personal trainer and fitness coach.
I put this project together to really push the camera in a number of different environments and lighting situations - from true run and gun filming in full natural light, to more controlled on set scenarios with crew. I am incredibly impressed with the footage that came out of this small package, and will be producing and handful of videos giving my thoughts.
